Unit 3: Cells
Chapter 7: Cell
Structure & Function
Ms. Petrucci
Biology
The Discovery of the Cell
The cell was first
discovered by
Robert Hooke in
1665 using a
microscope.
The Cell Theory
1. ALL LIVING THINGS ARE COMPOSED
OF CELLS
2. CELLS ARE THE BASIC UNITS OF
STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION IN
LIVING THINGS
3. NEW CELLS ARE PRODUCED FROM
EXISTING CELLS
The Key Players:
• Hooke
• Leeuwenhoek
• Schleiden
• Schwann
• Virchow
Exploring the Cell
• Light Microscopes
• Electron Microscopes
– SEM
– TEM
• Scanning Probe
Microscopes
Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
• Pro = Before
• Karyon = Nucleus
• Eu = True
• Commonalities:
– SURROUNDED BY A BARRIER CALLED A
CELL MEMBRANE
– AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE THEY
CONTAINED DNA
Prokaryotic cell parts
Prokaryotic
cells have
genetic
material
that is NOT
contained
in a nucleus
Eukaryotic Cells: Animal Cell
Eukaryotic
cells
contain a
nucleus in
which their
genetic
material is
separated
from the
rest of the
cell.
Eukaryotic Cells: Plant Cells
Eukaryotic Cells: Plant Cells

7-1: Life is Cellular

  • 1. Unit 3: Cells Chapter 7: Cell Structure & Function Ms. Petrucci Biology
  • 2. The Discovery of the Cell The cell was first discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 using a microscope.
  • 3. The Cell Theory 1. ALL LIVING THINGS ARE COMPOSED OF CELLS 2. CELLS ARE THE BASIC UNITS OF STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION IN LIVING THINGS 3. NEW CELLS ARE PRODUCED FROM EXISTING CELLS
  • 4. The Key Players: • Hooke • Leeuwenhoek • Schleiden • Schwann • Virchow
  • 5. Exploring the Cell • Light Microscopes • Electron Microscopes – SEM – TEM • Scanning Probe Microscopes
  • 6. Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes • Pro = Before • Karyon = Nucleus • Eu = True • Commonalities: – SURROUNDED BY A BARRIER CALLED A CELL MEMBRANE – AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE THEY CONTAINED DNA
  • 7. Prokaryotic cell parts Prokaryotic cells have genetic material that is NOT contained in a nucleus
  • 8. Eukaryotic Cells: Animal Cell Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus in which their genetic material is separated from the rest of the cell.

Editor's Notes

  1. The Cell Theory According to the cell theory, all living things are made up of cells, and living cells always come from other living cells. In fact, each living thing begins life as a single cell. Some living things, such as bacteria, remain single-celled. Other living things, including plants and animals, grow and develop into many cells. Your own body is made up of an amazing 100 trillion cells! But even you—like all other living things—began life as a single cell. More of the cell theory will be discussed in a later chapter.
  2. Hooke – observed tiny empty chambers through a microscope and called them cells. Leeuwenhoek – Used a single lens microscope to observe pond water and other things. Schleiden – concluded all plants are made of cells Schwann – stated that all animals are made of cells Virchow – new cells could only be produced from the division of existing cells.
  3. Electron microscopes are capable of revealing details as much as 1000 times smaller than a light microscope. Why? Wavelengths of electrons are much shorter than those of light.
  4. Prokaryotic cells are cells without a nucleus. The DNA in prokaryotic cells is in the cytoplasm rather than enclosed within a nuclear membrane. Prokaryotic cells are found in single-celled organisms, such as bacteria, like the one shown in Figure below. Organisms with prokaryotic cells are called prokaryotes. They were the first type of organisms to evolve and are still the most common organisms today. Prokaryotic Cell. This diagram shows the structure of a typical prokaryotic cell, a bacterium. Like other prokaryotic cells, this bacterial cell lacks a nucleus but has other cell parts, including a plasma membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and DNA. Identify each of these parts in the diagram.
  5. Eukaryotic cells are cells that contain a nucleus. A typical eukaryotic cell is shown in Figure below. Eukaryotic cells are usually larger than prokaryotic cells, and they are found mainly in multicellular organisms. Organisms with eukaryotic cells are called eukaryotes, and they range from fungi to people. Eukaryotic cells also contain other organelles besides the nucleus. An organelle is a structure within the cytoplasm that performs a specific job in the cell. Organelles called mitochondria, for example, provide energy to the cell, and organelles called vacuoles store substances in the cell. Organelles allow eukaryotic cells to carry out more functions than prokaryotic cells can.
