Matter is anything that takes up space and can be solid, liquid, or gas. It is composed of tiny particles called atoms and can be either alive, like plants and animals, or dead, like wood and metal. Matter can exist in different states depending on temperature, with solids having little atom movement, liquids having flowing atoms, and gases having separated, fast-moving atoms. Changes in temperature cause matter to shift between these states.
