A SECOND LIFE FOR WASTE
• Wealth from waste is “GREEN
ENGINEERING”
• Green engineering is the process
and design of products that
conserve natural resources, and
impact the natural environment as
little as possible.
The 7 R’s
• Reduce: use less of something.
• Recycle: to re-use the item and create something
else with it.
• Reuse: to put into action or service again.
• Respect: treat with consideration
• Refuse: to avoid buying products that are not
sustainable or recyclable
• Rethink: to think about how you can reuse a product or
its materials
• Repair: to repair products rather than buy new ones.
Quantity of Waste contribution
• The average person throws away 726
kilograms of waste each year
• The average family throw away the
amount equal to 1 . 5 TONS of rubbish
each year
General items found in solid waste:
Composition of different kinds of wastes in waste stream:
Survey conducted to find the reasons for dumping wastes:
Different colored bins -- placed
to separate different kind of
wastes at dumping sites.
Seperating wastes at the collection point itself:
Paper wastes
No question if all papers are recyclable.Just
remember: ”If it tears, it’s recyclable”!!!

out of waste papers is now one of the most
famous and visiting place
2. Bags made out of waste paper plastics
3. Waste cardboard is converted into a beautiful
show piece used for storing things.
By recycling 1 ton of paper,
we save:
17 trees (If all our
newspaper were recycled,
we could save about
250,000,000 trees each
year!!)
7,000 gallons of water
380 gallons of oil
3 cubic yards of landfill
space(Paper takes up as
much as 50% of all landfill
space)

9. Steps made out of plastic bottles
• 1/3 of all garbage is packaging (each year
we use 25 billion plastic containers)
• Manufacturers can make one extra-large T-
shirt out of only five recycled plastic soda
bottles.
• Recycling plastic saves twice as much
energy as burning it in an incinerator
• Recycling one ton of plastic saves 7.4
cubic yards of landfill space.

• Recycling aluminum cans saves 95%
of the energy required to make
aluminum cans from scratch.
• The energy saved from recycling
one aluminum canwill operate
a computer for THREE hours!!
• All steel is 100% recyclable and
can be recycled many times
without losing any quality
Abandonded Tyres
Abandoned vehicles
• “Car towers” attractive structures in public
places reducing both waste disposing problem
and occupying less space
Glass wastes
Giant fish sculpture jumping out of the beach at rio de janerio
• Glass can be recycled an infinite
number of times
• Recycling one ton of glass saves
the equivalent of 10 gallons of oil.
• The energy saved from recycling
one glass bottle will operate
a 100-watt light bulb
for four hours.
Food wastes
• Composting
• Donating waste food
Wood wastes

01.
1. “Compressed wood” is that which has been impregnated with
resin and subjected to a high pressure to increase its density and
strength. (this is stronger than normal ply wood).
2. “Particle board” also known as particleboard and chipboard, is an
engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips,
sawmill shavings, or even saw dust, and a synthetic resin or other
suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded. Large pieces of
whole wood are mulched and then washed, and a solution that is
basically glue based is added back into the pulp and then it is
dried and "compressed" into panel shapes for use called as
“particle board ”
3. A form of wood fuel, wood pellets are generally made from
compacted sawdust or other wastes are used as heating fuels
called as “fuel pellets”
Hazardous wastes
• Incineration is the best method as the final
product is an inert one.
Public Awareness
NOTHING IS OBSOLETE before you
throw it away as scrap, think again.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 By now everyone knows the importance of those 3 words represented by 3R’s.Once upon a time,in schools.. it was reading, ‘riting and ‘rithemic. But now its reduce recycle reuse.. It’s the need of the hour that brought the situation. So I would like to add 4 more R’s to this presentation for creating more awareness.
  • #6 This is the power structure of Waste Management.. Waste is passed through several stages to redue, recycle and reuse to the maximum extent possilble.
  • #13 Use two sides of paper including Front and back pages atleast for rough purpose. Read the news online Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins. Use a dish cloth instead of paper towels.
  • #19 Plastic roads, plastic bricks.
  • #20 Replace ball-point or felt tip pens with ones that take refills.
  • #26 Sarcastical representation of increasing problems with e-waste
  • #34 Manufacturing products with long life.
  • #43 Atleast for composting.. It can be used
  • #49 Incineration is the only solution
  • #51 Educating people.. Especially students is the best way to solve any problem these days…
  • #53 Love the environment
