   Agenda and Objectives
Objectives for Wednesday
                July 27, 2011:
• We will complete “Act 3 Words and Meanings”
  handout about Act 3 vocabulary.
• We will finish reading Act 3, Scene 5.
• We will summarize what we read in Act 3 using a relay
  summary.
• We will do a "Who Said What?" match-up activity
between characters from Act 3 and lines they spoke.
• We will do a "Who Said What?" match-up activity
between characters from Act 3 and lines they spoke.
• We will write, trade, and answer comprehension
  questions for Act 3.
• We will complete the Act 3 comprehension question
handout in class, or as homework.
Warm up: Act 3 Words and
       Meanings handout
• You can work with a partner or by yourself to
complete the Words and Meanings handout for
  Act 3.
• At 9:30, we will go over the answers to part B.
• Raise your hand if you would like to read and
share your answer for one of the sentences from
  part B.
• Students can keep this handout for a reference.
Read aloud: Act 3, Scene 5
• Before we begin reading, let’s discuss what
happened in Scene 4 and the beginning of
  Scene 5.
• Choose students to read the following parts:
  – Stage directions
  – Lady Capulet
  – Juliet
  – Lord Capulet
  – Nurse
Stop and Discuss - Act 3
• Before we work in groups to summarize the main
events of Act 3, let’s brainstorm a list of important
themes or events from Act 3.

• I will write them on the board to help you when
your group begins writing your summary of Act 3.

• Remember, your summary should include:
   – main characters
   – main events
   – important details
   – setting
“Who Said What?”
• We will complete a Character Study handout to help us
remember who did and said what in Act 3.
• Then, we will do a matching activity between the names of
characters from Act 3 and the lines they spoke.
• You will get a card with either a character’s name or a line
  of dialogue from Act 3.
• When I say go, mingle around the room to try to find the
  person whose card matches yours.
• When you find your partner, sit down together and write
down why you think the quote on your card is important.

• Example: If my card says, “There is no world outside
Verona. Everything I love is here”, I should look for
someone with a card that says “Romeo”.
Writing
     Comprehension Questions
• Now, we will work with the same partner to write a
  comprehension question about Act 3.
• Look back in the script at Act 3.
• Choose an important event or detail from Act 3 and
write a question asking about it.
Example: “Which characters die right after Romeo
and Juliet get married? How do they die?”

• After you write your question, trade with another
group. Discuss the question with your partner, and
share your answer with the other group. They will
share their answer with you, too.
Act 3 - Comprehension
          Question Handout
• If we have time in class, you can answer the
  Act 3 Comprehension Question handout
  alone or with a partner.
• Please write down the page number where
you found the answer to each question.
• We will discuss our answers in class, if we
  have time.
• If we run out of time, please do the handout
as homework and bring it back tomorrow.
Act 3 - Relay Summary
You will work together in your table groups to write a
summary of Act 3 so far.
1. 1st person: Write one sentence to tell the 1st
   important event from Act 3.
2. 2nd person: Write one sentence to tell the 2nd
   important event from Act 3.
3. 3rd person: Write one sentence to tell the 3rd
   important event from Act 3.
4. 4th person: Write one sentence to tell the 4th
   important event from Act 4.
**Keep going until you have summarized what we
have read in Act 3 so far.

7 27-11

  • 1. Wednesday July 27, 2011 Hubbs Center - ELL 7 Agenda and Objectives
  • 2. Objectives for Wednesday July 27, 2011: • We will complete “Act 3 Words and Meanings” handout about Act 3 vocabulary. • We will finish reading Act 3, Scene 5. • We will summarize what we read in Act 3 using a relay summary. • We will do a "Who Said What?" match-up activity between characters from Act 3 and lines they spoke. • We will do a "Who Said What?" match-up activity between characters from Act 3 and lines they spoke. • We will write, trade, and answer comprehension questions for Act 3. • We will complete the Act 3 comprehension question handout in class, or as homework.
  • 3. Warm up: Act 3 Words and Meanings handout • You can work with a partner or by yourself to complete the Words and Meanings handout for Act 3. • At 9:30, we will go over the answers to part B. • Raise your hand if you would like to read and share your answer for one of the sentences from part B. • Students can keep this handout for a reference.
  • 4. Read aloud: Act 3, Scene 5 • Before we begin reading, let’s discuss what happened in Scene 4 and the beginning of Scene 5. • Choose students to read the following parts: – Stage directions – Lady Capulet – Juliet – Lord Capulet – Nurse
  • 5. Stop and Discuss - Act 3 • Before we work in groups to summarize the main events of Act 3, let’s brainstorm a list of important themes or events from Act 3. • I will write them on the board to help you when your group begins writing your summary of Act 3. • Remember, your summary should include: – main characters – main events – important details – setting
  • 6. “Who Said What?” • We will complete a Character Study handout to help us remember who did and said what in Act 3. • Then, we will do a matching activity between the names of characters from Act 3 and the lines they spoke. • You will get a card with either a character’s name or a line of dialogue from Act 3. • When I say go, mingle around the room to try to find the person whose card matches yours. • When you find your partner, sit down together and write down why you think the quote on your card is important. • Example: If my card says, “There is no world outside Verona. Everything I love is here”, I should look for someone with a card that says “Romeo”.
  • 7. Writing Comprehension Questions • Now, we will work with the same partner to write a comprehension question about Act 3. • Look back in the script at Act 3. • Choose an important event or detail from Act 3 and write a question asking about it. Example: “Which characters die right after Romeo and Juliet get married? How do they die?” • After you write your question, trade with another group. Discuss the question with your partner, and share your answer with the other group. They will share their answer with you, too.
  • 8. Act 3 - Comprehension Question Handout • If we have time in class, you can answer the Act 3 Comprehension Question handout alone or with a partner. • Please write down the page number where you found the answer to each question. • We will discuss our answers in class, if we have time. • If we run out of time, please do the handout as homework and bring it back tomorrow.
  • 9. Act 3 - Relay Summary You will work together in your table groups to write a summary of Act 3 so far. 1. 1st person: Write one sentence to tell the 1st important event from Act 3. 2. 2nd person: Write one sentence to tell the 2nd important event from Act 3. 3. 3rd person: Write one sentence to tell the 3rd important event from Act 3. 4. 4th person: Write one sentence to tell the 4th important event from Act 4. **Keep going until you have summarized what we have read in Act 3 so far.
