As Keanu Reeves once said, Grief changes shapes, but it never ends ( Tragic ). When it comes to grief
there are usually five shapes or stages that people go through: denial, anger, bargaining, depression
and, finally, acceptance. The book A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness, is about a young boy who is
struggling with school, bullies, friends, and family when his mother develops a terminal illness. He is
visited by the monster, a massive yew tree, who comes alive to teach Conor the ways of the world. He
also teaches Conor the truth in order to move past his mother s sickness. Ness shows how people in
both literature and real life tend to go through five stages of grief while dealing with a loved one who
has a terminal illness because of the overwhelming lamentation it inflicts.

In Michael Apted s treatment of Amazing Grace, he focuses on a young abolitionist in a pro slavery

Gʀaċɛ,William Wilberforce strives to stand up for what he believes is morally right when escaping
from political pressures, even if it means being humiliated. Throughout the film three types of history
occurred: political, economic, and military. The conclusion of the paper will be a restatement of the
main ideas, and my personal opinion on the film.
In the beginning of the movie, Michael Apted introduces William Wilberforce as a young abolitionist.
William lives in a society that is racist and prejudice to anyone not of their skin color. Great Britain in
the late 1700 s, was a society dominated by the upper class who opposed changes in their way of life.
To achieve this they lived a glamorous life, looking down on those below them in the social order. At
first William does not outright show his feeling about slavery but subtly shows it by being a worker of
God. To him a worker of God was one who made decisions and based their actions upon what they
believed God wanted. In the beginning of the film, As a game of poker occurs with other members of
Parliament in a bar, William plays against the Duke of Clarence a strong believer in slavery. The duke

organizing a group but more importantly as their way of maintaining order. More often than not, these
rules and expectations are implicitly dictated by the society and are valued as a standard how an

The overarching theme had to do with making college kids feel uncomfortable with prolonged eye
contact, no eye contact at all, getting a little too close for comfort, not dancing or joining in socially
with friends when expected to do so, eating a nice dinner with hands, and many strange elevator
escapades. Along with similarities, there were also differences that stood out to me. These differences
include wearing clothing that is not considered appropriate or looks strange to the general public; For
example, wearing a dress shirt and tie to the gym or arriving in a costume to lecture. Another student
discussed how her shaved head threw multiple people off, and how many people in America,
especially in the Mid Western states, do not expect to see a woman with no hair unless she is sick or is
doing it for a cause. Ultimately, she is not considered feminine . Her experience really stood out to me
because of how we view what is classified as feminine and masculine in this country. It disappoints
me to see both men and women be judged by the way they style their hair or the clothing they wear.
America has held such strict gender roles, like creating toys specifically for girls (dolls) and boys
(trucks), to literally gendering products like pens and boxes of tissues because of the color. I am

society represents whiteness as of European decent. She personally identifies the advantages that
white people are given and she is not, even though she technically is white. Kate s personal statement

When analyzing the respondents answers to specific questions regarding the lack of diversity within
their immediate spaces, I was able to identify how a lack of diversity shapes the understanding of race,
for both WOC respondents and white respondents. Specifically, the WOC respondents are made
hyperaware of their race and even singled out for being racially different. The two of three (67%)
white respondents embody this lack of diversity in their actions and mentality of their own whiteness.

Abstract
This was a study conducted at IUP on undergraduate students to see if processing information at
certain levels would improve memory recall. During the study, we presented the participants with a
PowerPoint of information on a made up country. The participants was randomly assigned to a
shallow, medium, or deep processing instruction, which explained to them how to take notes
throughout the presentation. After, students recieved a distractor task for 15 minutes, and after given a
multiple choice test on the information showed on the slides. The results showed that there was no
significant difference between note taking instructions and the number of correct answers. All three
task instructions in the study showed similar means on the recall test.

In The Red Room , the theme instead is fear. We learn from the story that it is fear, but we miss it
when we read the title. We find also that the Red Room is a very curious title, as a room can t actually
be red can it? Hence we associate red with fear and danger. Is the room dangerous? Therefore an

discussing her grandfather dying with Edwin, she doesn t believe that she needs to visit him. But when

seems to be surreal. She shows warmth that isn t in her usual personality and she strives to have his
approval of her. When she is away, even though she respects his advice, Cress doesn t continue her
warmth. The warmth becomes blurred with traces of guilt since the quote uses words like hot and
dusty . She doesn t find clarity with her ideas, and feels that the only person that matters is herself.
Although she is somewhat aware of her insecurities, she tries to forget by pushing her selfishness onto
other people. She is so confident that she isn t insecure that her true feelings are hidden. She still
dismisses the fact that going to her grandfather is the right thing to do and continues to express this
when she is with her parents.
