This essay will analyse via the sociological imagination, whose interests does schooling serve and
why? In addressing this question, one needs to discuss why is an education so valued in Australia

Education has had three phases of development according, to Van Krieken, 2013. Each phase
being associated with a set of beliefs about the nature and purpose of education. Firstly, the advent
of the modern system from the mid 19th century to World War II, influenced chiefly by liberal
humanist ideas. Secondly, post World War II expansion into the late 1970 s was influenced by
social democratic beliefs. Finally, the increased marketisation of education which has been
influenced by neoliberalism since the 1980 s (Krieken, 2013, p. 149).
In Australia, post World War II the federal government began to take an increasing role over the
states in education, as states were finding it increasingly difficult to fund higher education due in
part to the baby boom post World War II and the requirement for more university trained teachers
and by the late 1950 s. Furthermore, politically, grouwing desire among politicians to enable more

The lesson I recorded was for a math support class for twelve students. In this lesson, I am
reviewing with the meaning of slope, how to find slope, and where it is written in a linear equation.
The students were then able to practice individually with a card sort for different points.
This was one of the first lessons I taught to these students, so I made sure to ask them questions
to get a grasp of their prior knowledge of slope. I liked how the question What is slope? had a
variety of answers that I could build off of. When a student answered y intercept , I used what she
could remember from a relating factor of the slope and connected it to the equation. The discussion
we had at the start of lesson was extremely vital for these students because many of them have
retention issues. By watching the video, I noticed how a lot of the talking was whole class. I
wonder if I would have gotten more response and connection if students had the opportunity to talk
to a partner first.

Street harassment, also know as catcalling, is an action that I hate the most. Street harassment is
unwanted sayings or gestures that are targeted toward someone in specific based on sexual
orientation or gender, and in this case, women. Catcalling can be verbal such as compliments, like,

What every American should know by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy
and its place in modern America. It takes on a convincing argument against E.D. Hirsch s book on
the same which included some 5000 things that he thought define cultural literacy and every
American should know. Liu argues that America has changed over time, becoming more
multicultural, and to capture the cultural literacy of the country, no one person should sit down and
come up with what they think everyone else should know. Instead he suggests that in order to
capture the view of the nation, every American should be involved in the making of the list. The
most engaging part of this article is Liu s idea that this new list that is crowd sourced should
always change according to the times. It should not be cast in stone because things in this day
and age change really fast; what is a hit this month will be old news in the next one. This is what
cultural literacy really is; keeping up with what is going on around you and being open to learn

water samples were lactose fermenters. When the lactose broth changed from red to yellow is
indicated that acid was produced, and when the bubble was found in the Durham tube, it

of selective media. EMB agar selects for gram negative bacteria and differentiates just how strong

test if the solution turns red, it indicates the Ph is 4.2 or lower. If the solution does not turn red it
