 Why 4G is Better than 3G
A Couple of Decades Ago?
 1G-First Generation (1980s to 1990’s)
Speech
2.4 kbps speed
Poor Voice quality
Analog Signal
 2G-Second Generation
Digital Signals
64kbps
GSM
SMS , MMS
3-G
3G-Third Generation
Wireless Internet
Video Calling
 Mobile TV
 Drawbacks
High Bandwidth Requirements
High spectrum licensing fees
Huge capital
Future Demands..!
4G
3G
2G
1G
High transfer rate
 Internet access any where
 Ability to move around with the
same IP address
 Utilization of Smart antennas
 High resolution Mobile TV
What’s new in 4G ?
o IP (Internet Protocol) based
mobile systems.
o Entirely packet-switched
networks.
o Digital in nature
o Wider Bandwidths 100Mhz
Why 4G is Better than 3G
Technology 3G 4G
Data Transfer Rate 3.1MB /sec 100MB/sec
Internet services Broadband Ultra Broadband
Mobile -TV Resolution Low High
Bandwidth 5 - 20 MHz 100+ MHz
Frequency 1.6 - 2 GHZ 2 - 8 GHz
Network Architecture Wide Area Network Hybrid Network
Signal Quality Good Best
Communication Type Circuit Switching Packet Switching
Why 4G is Better than 3G
Technology 3G 4G
Data Transfer Rate 3.1 MB/sec 100 MB/sec
Internet Services Broadband Ultra Broadband
Mobile - TV Resolution Low High
Bandwidth 5-20 MHz 100MHz
Frequency 1.6-2 GHz 2-8 GHz
Download and upload 5.8 Mbps 14 Mbps
Applications of 4G
 Better Usage of Multimedia Applications.
 Video Conferencing.
 Graphical Maps of streets, buildings, and
physical characteristics of a large metropolis
on a vehicle.
4-G in PAKISTAN
 Government has already Auctioned the 3G and 4G Licenses
 Pakistan is among the latecomers in 3G but not very late in 4G
 3 Telecom Companies bided for 3G Technology. i-e. Ufone, Mobilink,
Telenor.
 Zong bided highest amount for only 4G Spectrum.
 3G auction was postponed by government for more than 1 year due to
some personal political wishes but at last Supreme Court of Pakistan
ordered PTA for the auction of 3G and 4G spectrum and hence it
happened.
Advantages of 4G
 Affordable communication services.
 High speed high capacity and low cost per bit.
 Support for interactive multimedia, voice ,
streaming video, Internet and other broadband
services.
 Global access, Service portability and scalable
mobile services and variety of quality of services
provided.
 Better spectral efficiency.
Disadvantages 4G
 Battery usage is more.
 Hard to implement.
 Need complicated hardware.
 The equipment required to implement a next generation
network is still very expensive.
 4G Device Needed to avail services of 4G Technology.
Advantages of 3G
Overcrowding is relieved in existing systems with radio spectrum.
Bandwidth, security and reliability are more.
Provides interoperability among service providers.
Availability of fixed and variable rates.
Support to devices with backward compatibility with existing
networks.
Always online devices 3G uses IP connectivity which is packet based
Rich multi media services are available.
Disadvantages 3G
The cost of cellular infrastructure , upgrading base
stations is very high.
Needs different handsets.
Roaming and data/voice work together has not yet
been implemented.
Power consumption is high.
Requires closer base stations and are expensive.
Spectrum-license costs, network deployment costs and
handset subsidies subscribers are tremendous.
Challenges
 Competition with the next forth coming 5G.
 5G technology is providing large broadcasting of
data in Gigabit which supports almost 65,000
connections.
 5G technology would provide better use of available
bandwidth.
Conclusion
Mobile…. Multimedia …..
Anytime….. Anywhere…..
Global mobility…..
Integrated wireless…..
Personalized services…..
That’s……..
