This document discusses decolonization and independence movements in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East from the 1920s to 1980s. It overviewed how many regions in these parts of the world freed themselves from European imperial dominance by the mid-20th century through processes like European withdrawal, revolutions overthrowing Europeans, and non-violent independence movements. Some of the key causes that led to decolonization included education and information acquired by local populations, the two World Wars, and the growth of nationalism as people questioned European superiority. The results were many new independent nation-states, though economic dependency and gaps between rich and poor persisted as problems in some places.
