This document outlines Allison Hewitt's initial plans for creating a print magazine. She enjoys print media and was excited about the project. Her first idea was a magazine about creativity but she wanted to narrow the focus. When travel photos she took in Europe were mentioned, she decided to create a travel magazine about adventurous people traveling the world for creative reasons. She created mind maps and mood boards to develop her idea. Her schedule outlines research, experiments, production, and evaluation over 5 weeks. She lists 7 sources she plans to use including magazine design techniques, travel destination articles, and backpacking tips.
2. Initial Reaction
• I personally really enjoy making any form of print media, especially magazines. So initially I was very excited about the
project and my brain started immediately running through different ideas that I could do. I thought that it was possible that I
could do an idea with the theme of creativity and different creative outlets, but this idea was to broad so I gave myself a task
to try and narrow it down whilst still maintaining some of the creativity theme.
• I have had some experience with making print media before, such as posters, book covers and we did a whole project in L2
about magazine front covers and double page spreads. However, we didn't have to to take our own pictures for this project
where for this one it is a requirement. I have no experience with professional photography so I am excited but also nervous
to learn about it.
• When the subject – taking our own pictures – was mentioned, it reminded me of all the beautiful pictures I took when I was
traveling through Europe in the summer. This is when I had the idea to make a travel magazine. I could combine this with my
earlier idea of creativity by making my magazine about adventurous people who have/are traveling the world and their
creative reasons for doing so.
6. Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated colours/images styles/fonts/tone/mood
• The colours are very similar – I gathered a lot of natural, serene colour such as vibrant shades of blues and greens that are
apparent in the lakes and waters and the mountains and hills.
• A lot of the different scenery's include beautiful plush mountains and gorgeous bright blue lakes – I think this is
because it looks very visually appealing and the colours that are featured in these images really stand out and
catch my eye.
• The magazine I have chosen for the mood boards are quite minimalistic yet detailed and eye catching. They don’t
use many taglines or blobs and starts, the main focus on each of the front cover in the magazine titles and the
feature cover image.
• I also gathered a lot of symbols of travel through out my mood board, such as the suitcases and the travel stickers.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• I will be using a lot of vibrant, natural colours in my world to make it look authentic and down to earth whilst still
looking magnificent and eye catching. I want the audience to look and be amazed at what they are seeing to give
them the experience of being there in real life.
• I think when young people travel, they will be looking at places that look amazing s they can experience the sights
– like waterfalls and lagoons and mountain tops where you can almost see the whole world underneath you. This
is why I will also be using images that reflect these desires in my product.
• I really love the minimalistic designs of the other magazines and how they focus on aesthetic appeal more than
anything else, because what they are trying to do is connote the feel of their magazine and the feel of how
traveling will affect the audience more than just show them how they should feel.
• A will be using a lot of symbols to represent travel all the way throughout my product because that is what the
magazine is about – we want the audience to yearn for traveling and exploring, so using symbols in words and
images will spin that craving feeling a little more.
7. Schedule
WEEK OVERALL PLAN SPECIFIC TASKS
1 Research, Initial Response,
Audience Research
Find different type of magazines to
annotate and dissect from all genres.
Write about how I feel about the
product.
What does my audience want? Who is
my audience?
2 Production Experiments, Proposal,
Planning
Practice the techniques I will use in my
final product in my experiments.
Hash out my entire idea in the proposal
and figure out the details.
Gather everything I will need for the
production stage and plan out exactly
how my production will go.
3 Production Book out the studio and select a model
and take pictures.
Gather all the fonts and images I need
of the internet and from my own
personal collection.
Start on the front cover.
4 Production Finish the front cover and move onto
the double page spread. Make sure the
dimensions are right – AA3 landscape,
Finish my double page spread and
polish up on both of the finished
products.
5 Evaluation Evaluate the products. How did I
progress? How good is product? What
did I like and what didn’t I like? How
does it compare to real magazine in the
same genre and in different genres.
