2. Plan + statement of intent
■ While the theme I chose is mirrors, I’m choosing to explore identity and how confusing and
hard it can be to find your identity, using mirrors. In my first shoot I explored the concept of
beauty, and how people can look pretty to others, but when they look in the mirror they
see something different – the idea was to show the difference of perspectives.
■ In shoot 2 there was less of a ‘fixed’ concept (besides wanting to create Duane Michal’s
photo), but I did want to explore mirrors and identity in more depth, hence the photoshop
and distortion, and the dark colours. I wanted to do these shoots using a variety of light and
colour.
■ For this shoot I intend on exploring identity in terms of gender and how some people find it
hard to come to terms with who they truly are and how they truly feel. I want to capture an
image of one gender looking into a mirror – or away, and seeing and feeling, the opposite
gender. I also want to show tones of concealment, and how some people feel ashamed of
how they feel.
3. plan
■ -To explore a range of perspectives, instead of doing self portrait I'm going to use other people in my
shoot, which are two classmates, a girl and a boy.
■ I also want to have dark lighting for this shoot to match the ’embarrassing, shameful’ or just simply
upset, negative tone that I’m going for.
Props:
- mirror, preferably big to capture the full view of the girl.
- Table to stand the mirror on
- Chair for the boy to sit on, facing opposite the mirror
- Own clothes if needed
- Dark background paper
