Cleisthenes As An Opportunist
Cleisthenes was the Athenian politician setting the stage of democracy around c.520 BC and to c.400
BC. An opportunist is defined by Oxford dictionaries as: A person who takes advantage of
opportunities as and when they arise, regardless of planning or principle . For many, this sums up the
rule of Cleisthenes as he took advantage of the anti tyrannical movement and of the power he was
given to improve the position of himself and his Alcmaeonid family. However, this essay will argue
that although Cleisthenes did take advantage of opportunities, he was ultimately very principled in
nature and was actually a reactionist. This is to say that he reacted to problems and events that
occurred and dealt with them the best he could, rather than taking advantage of the opportunity to
better himself, the elite classes or his family.
To many, Cleisthenes was simply an opportunist. One way he can be said to be opportunistic is during
his rise to power. This idea has stemmed from the ancient Greek author Herodotus, and in parts
Aristotle as well. On the whole, these are two ancient authors with semi opposing views, with
Herodotus being a stronger source for stating Cleisthenes was an opportunist. The main reason most
historians believe that Cleisthenes was an opportunist is because of the account from Herodotus
histories. The account is as follows: these two [Isagoras and Cleisthenes] were rivals for power, and
Cleisthenes, who was getting the worst of it, took the people into his

Ragged Dick Sparknotes
Ragged Dick by Horatio Alger. This story follows a young boy, who through hard work,
determination, self reliance, honesty and good character went from a homeless black boot to a
respectable, high paying job. This story is filled with examples of what life was like in New York City,
telling the us what he would find and experience in it. In Ragged Dick, This was a time of progress,
change and falsehood in American History. This is when people really started to chase the illusive
American dream, and Alger is trying to capture this rags to riches vision. The fact that the book takes
place in New York is not enough to understand the full extent of this book. At this time many
Americans were going through one of the hardest times in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One day Dick made a friend named Frank. Frank is different than Dick, he is not poor he was born
into a life of comfort. Franks Uncle Mr. Whitley, who Dick looks up to because he represents Dick s
aspirations in both money and status. Mr. Whiteley gave Dick one of his nephew s suits and that
completely changed Dick s socioeconomic rank. From the moment Dick get the grey suit from Mr.
Whitley and gets cleaned up not only does he receive better treatment, but in a scene where he and
Frank are accused of stealing something on a train, they are acquitted because they did not look like
the type of kids that would need to steal. Dick implies that clothes really do make the man, who is
largely determined by what one wears, that although appearances matter in Alger s world, it s
ultimately inner virtues like honesty, generosity, and courage that defines one s self and its potential.
Looks can be deceiving. When Dick has his suit on he is not known as Ragged Dick anymore. The
bank officer ends up calling him richard hunter. He said that Dick did not look ragged. Now that he is
dressing nice it is bringing him more attention in a positive way. In the poor parts of the streets he is
known as Ragged Dick, but when he is around people of a higher social class. He calls himself
Richard Hunter. For example after church he was talking to miss Ida What is your name? asked Ida,
pleasantly. Our hero was about to answer Ragged Dick, when it occurred to him that in the present

The Impact Of Special Education On Children With Disabilities
Introduction: Special education services in Russia have improved enormously since the end of the
Soviet Communist Regime. Despite the advances in the special education system, people with
disabilities still face discrimination. According to the Human Rights Watch (HRW) report, Barriers
Everywhere, Russia has approximately 13 million people with disabilities, including 700,000 children
and young adults, yet the environment is still not accessible for people with impairments. In the 20th
century, during the Soviet Era, disability was invisible to the public and children with impairments
were segregated and taken to faraway institutions. Recently, significant improvements have been
made to help people with disabilities acquire the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Media also shows a negative image of them, which is why Apparel makes commercials to spread
awareness of disabilities and why it is important for disabled children to join regular schools. Even
though there is still a negative image in Russia of people with disabilities, companies like Apparel and
other organizations are working toward improvement. The Human Rights Watch report, Russia: End
Hurdles for People With Disabilities, is based on 120 interviews of people with disabilities living in
Russia. This report talks about the daily challenges people face because the environment is not
accessible for people with disabilities. Some people using wheelchairs report staying at home for days
because elevators are broken or nonexistent and some private or public buildings do not have ramps.
Even though the laws have improved, the reality does not reflect the law states Andrea Mazzarino, a
disability rights researcher at Human Rights Watch (HRW).
History of Special Education in Russia: In the 19th century, special educators in Russia learned
different techniques for teaching students with disabilities from the European countries. However,
during the 20th century, Russia was separated from the world as a result of the Bolshevik Revolution,
the Civil War,

Neocolonialism in Jamaica Essay
Neocolonialism in Jamaica: History, practices, and resistance
The imposition of structural adjustment programs in the Third World since the 1970s has been
characterized as a war against the poor, a process of [neo] recolonization (Turner, 1994: 37). This
statement is particularly applicable to the country of Jamaica. The island has been susceptible to a
variety of neocolonial acts including the presence of multinational corporations, structural adjustment
programs, and loan organizations that have sucked Jamaica s economy dry. This neocolonial presence
has devastated the population in more ways than one. It is apparent that neocolonialism has had and
continues to have a large impact on society as a whole in Jamaica. This ... Show more content on

Profound development began in 1660 when, after a five year struggle against the Spanish crown, the
British won power. There was a significant rise in population under British control. Their system
allowed the colony to prosper as they gave new European settlers land to cultivate sugar cane and
cocoa. The European planter has been described as a machine for making money (Waters, 1985: 22).
The purpose of this colonial economic system was to provide raw materials and goods for the Mother
Country. In addition, a general consumer market was developed to send wealth to Europe and allow
for capital accumulation, all for the benefit of the colonizers.
Slavery represents an important part of Jamaican history and the cultivated dominant atmosphere. For
one, plantations highly depended on slave labor to maximize profit margins. Between 1655 and 1808
one million slaves were forcefully brought to Jamaica (Waters, 1985: 21 23). Persaud (2001: 72)
suggests, the plantation system, the totality of institutional arrangements surrounding the production
and marketing of plantation crops, has seriously affected society in Jamaica . In other words, the slave
mode of production was a crucial factor in the establishment of Jamaica s structural society. Jamaica s
class structure today reflects its history as a colonial plantation society and its beginnings of industrial
development

Evolution vs. Creation Essay
Don t Monkey Around in Class
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1:1). Words of this nature have been
questioned for thousands of years by naturalists, materialists, humanists, etc. and, in more recent
times, have led to court cases, heated arguments, and public debates. The major debate intended to be
covered in this piece is that of whether or not evolution should be taught in classrooms. Also, if it is to
be taught, should it be taught as fact or theory? It is also intended to present enough evidence to
disprove evolution altogether and, as a result, make it much less than a theory, but actually the vain
opinions of a man who chose not to accept the truth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Organisms either appeared on the earth fully developed or they did not. If they did not, they must have
developed from preexisting species by some form of modification. If they did appear in a fully
developed state, they must indeed have been created by some omnipotent intelligence (qtd. in Gish).
Furthermore, if evolution were true, there would be countless fossils of transitional forms...., millions
of fossils showing various stages in the gradual transition of kinds of organisms into different kinds....,
and missing links (Parker, et al, 367). Charles Darwin himself recognized this problem: The number of
intermediate varieties, which have formerly existed, must be truly enormous. Why then is not every
geological formation and every stratum full of such intermediate links? Geology assuredly does not
reveal any such finely graduated organic chain; and this, perhaps is the most obvious and serious
objection to the theory (Parker, et al, 367). Darwin s doubts, however, do not stop there: To suppose
that the eye...could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the
highest possible degree (Parker, et al, 381). Also, with respect to transitional forms and the fact that
the animal must be alive and fully functional during any change, he says, If it could be demonstrated
that any complex organ existed, which by numerous, successive modifications, my theory would
absolutely break down. Gregory Parker s text also

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), she was also among the few
Black leaders to explicitly oppose Booker T. Washington and his strategies. As a result, she was

Elizabeth s Poem
The Harp
In the woods there lived a women that played a beautiful song on her golden harp. Her name was
Elizabeth these songs were like a call that would signal the animals in the forest. This signal would
impact their actions, the song she played in December was so beautiful it put the animals into a deep
sleep that lasted till the end of winter. During winter the animals would sleep so soundly that nothing
could hurt them. Elizabeth s song would change the seasons, the song of the spring brought back the
leaves on the trees, they grew the grass, and they melted snow and ice. She stopped playing her music
and took her harp to the bottom of the pond and fell asleep. The next day Elizabeth decided to practice

When Charles saw the harp he waited for Elizabeth to fall asleep then he would steal it and bring it to
Aaron to make a profit. When Charles snuck into her room, grabbed the harp and ran out of the house.
Aaron was waiting for him at a secret hideout that was in a cave. For as long as Charles knew Aaron
he always wore a mask almost as if he was covering a wound on his face, Aaron also had a necklace
that was in the shape of a bear paw. When Charles arrived at Aaron s hideout he gave him the harp and
in return Aaron gave him nothing and ran deeper into the cave. Charles sprinted after him but he lost
track of him. A few seconds later he heard a roar that shattered the stalagmites in the cave. Charles
began dove out of the way because the stalagmites were about to fall on him. Then he got up to run
out of the cave, before that beast he heard in the cave came after him. When Charles made it to the
house he woke up his brother because the beast was heading towards their cabin. Suddenly the ground
began to rumble and the house shook due to a loud roar that came from the direction of the cave. This
roar woke up Elizabeth and Bufford. William grabbed his bow that someone in the castle gave him.
He took Bufford with him, Elizabeth was confused because her harp was missing. Charles apologized
to her because he needed to sell it to Aaron or he would kill everyone

are five and a half million adherents, and of those five and a half million, five million reside in India.
Jainism is very similar to both Buddhism and Hinduism when it comes to its ideals and beliefs. The
founder of Jainism is Vardhamana Jnatiputra, or by his most common name Nataputta Mahavira. The
God of Jainism is called Jina which means Spiritual Conqueror. Jainism is split into two sects:
Shvetember, meaning white clad, and Digambar, meaning sky directions. Shvetember is the seen as a
more extreme sect compared to Digambar. There are only male monks in the Shvetember sect, and

How Culture Affects Nursing Care And The Way Humans Care...
Assumptions Leininger presented a general theory statement in 1985, with the theory, I predict that
different cultures perceive, know, and practice care in different ways, yet there are some
commonalities about care among all the cultures in the world (Reynolds Leininger, pg 11). Leininger
states the theory can help to show how culture affects nursing care and the way humans care for
themselves. Leininger holds to the idea that care is the central concept for nursing theory and research.
The theory has many assumptive premises which include; Care is essential for overall health and well
being. Cultural care can provide a holistic way to improve and guide nursing practices. Nursing should
be transcultural and meant to serve all of mankind. Different cultures will have both diversities and
similarities. Every culture has different views of personal care both professionally and non
professionally. Cultural car values, beliefs, and practices are influenced by and tend to be embedded in
world view, language, religion (or spiritual), kinship (social), politics (legal), education, economic,
technology, ethno history, and environmental context of a particular culture (Reynolds Leininger, pg
16). Providing culturally based nursing care will increase the well being and health of individuals,
families and communities when provided within their environment. Cultural care can only be given
when cultural awareness is present. Clients who show signs of culture conflicts,

Reaction Rate Of Clock Reactions
Introduction:
Investigations into the mechanics of chemical kinetics can reveal invaluable information relating to
the rates of reaction. There are numerable applications of reaction rates, knowledge in this area is
pivotal for industrial, commercial and research sectors. Thus, allowing them the ability to manipulate
a variety of factors of chemical reactions with the use of reaction rates. In the scope of the kinetics of
clock reactions, there is a range of information that can be obtained about reaction rates (Shakhashiri,
1992).
A clock reaction is characterised by an abrupt colour change following an established time lag (Lente
et al, 2007). The induction period in a clock reaction is a result of low concentrations of the clock
chemical (i.e. the chemical that enables the final reaction). The induction period ends after the total
consumption of a limiting reagent, which initiates a short increase in the rate of product formation,
resulting in a visible colour change (Schmitz, 2010)(Lente et al, 2007). The reaction rate of clock
reactions is subject to factors including temperature, concentration, catalysis and inhibition. These
factors can be manipulated, thus changing the length of the induction period in a clock like manner
(Shakhashiri, 1992).
Changes in the rate of reaction can be described in terms of chemical equilibrium. Chemical
equilibrium is a state in which the forward and reverse reactions take place at the same rate
(Wilbraham et al, 2002). The

The Oversexualization And Objectification Of Women
The Oversexualization and Objectification of Women
On all platforms of media, women and even young girls are oversexualized; thus leading to men
viewing women as no more than breasts, vaginas, legs, or any other body part they prefer. Even in
current television shows, movies, comic books, and advertisements, women are still depicted as sexual
objects, which can damage a woman s confidence. The oversexualization of women s bodies can
degrade a young woman s confidence, and when girls try to boost confidence by dressing or acting
like the women they see in the media, they are reprimanded for it. Girls cannot be blamed for their
sexualization; they are just emulating what they see in the media. On television and in movies, women
are often portrayed as the love interest for the main male character or the succubus that tries to gain
the main character s love through temptation. Most the women depicted in the romances are white,
thin, and busty. Often the attractive female lead has a best friend who is deemed overweight and never
receives any romantic interactions. The only goal the female character has is to gain the attention of
the main character. In other movies and television shows when the female character is not considered
attractive, she must go through a complete makeover before her love interest even notices her. Once
the makeover is complete, the girl s love interest is completely stupefied with her beauty and instantly
falls in love with her. This plot device leads

Specific Heat Capacity Lab
Purpose/ Research Question: Determine the specific heat capacity of two unknown metals. Find two
Ionic compounds out of the several given chemicals that would synthesize in the product of the most
effective hand warmer. Hypothesis: For both metals one and two, we can calculate the specific heat
capacity within five percent error. The ideal hand warmer for cost, toxicity, and heat given off would
include 5.0 g Magnesium Sulfate (MgSO4) and 10 mL of deionized water. Procedures: We set up an
appropriate apparatus including a Styrofoam calorimeter cup containing room temperature deionized
water, two thermometers, and a clean beaker also containing deionized water directly on a heat source.
After heating up the water until its boiling point, we recorded the mass of each metal and carefully
placed the selected metal inside the boiling water until the temperature of the water containing the
metal was constant. Quickly, we placed the hot metal from the boiling water in the calorimeter cup
containing room temperature water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We calculated the specific heat of metal one to be 0.39 J/g℃ which correlates to the exact specific
heat capacity of element 30 Zinc. For metal two, we calculated the specific heat capacity to be 0.38
J/g℃ which was close to the actual specific heat of element 23 Iron. The specific heat capacity of Iron
was 0.45 J/g℃. Our inaccuracy could be a result of not reading the thermometer as accurately as we
could have. To improve yield in the future, we could make sure we record more accurate temperatures.
I also accept my hypothesis on the most effective hand warmer. In terms of heat given off, toxicity,
and price, Magnesium Sulfate was indeed the best choice for a hand warmer because when compared
to the other given chemicals, it was the most exothermic in water, it is relatively nontoxic, and is very

Batman Is Justice
What I believe in is Justice. Whether this is the eye for an eye system of the past or the current Judicial
system. This is because the justice is something that cannot let someone down. No matter what,
everyone eventually faces justice. It is the natural order of life for people to get what is coming to
them . Every culture in the world has some concept of justice: Buddhists have Karma, other religions
have divine judgment, and many have Batman.
Batman is truly the pinnacle of justice. He fights every night for what he knows is right. This dark
knight has worked constantly for generations to abolish evil from the streets of Gotham City. He has

When Batman strikes, his victims are left either insane or completely restored. Yet, he understands the
value of life. He does not kill, though for him it would be extremely easy because he knows it forsakes

the opportunity to cleanse a wrong doer of their crimes. It combines punishment and rehabilitation to
leave someone exonerated. It is the ability to overcome all obstacles, to become good again .
Purgatory is an astounding example of this. According to Christian beliefs, Purgatory is a place a
sinner goes after they die. It is a hell like area, where someone has the filth of their life burned away,
so God can judge them. Its goal is not just to pass some form of punishment on those who sin, but also
so they can be fairly judged by the divine. It can also be seen through

An Analysis of the Story of the Adulterous Woman

But is of life cleaner than she,

Clean out of sin if that ye be.
(N Town: Woman Taken In Adultery: Medieval Drama; Bevington, David; Houghton Mifflin, 1975)
Who among us has never sinned? And, in our place as fellow victims of our own all too human nature,
have we any right to pass judgement on those who do the same as we do, if with less discretion? If so,
this begs the question of whether morality lies in following the social mores or if it is all in hiding

This would place the original writing of the gospel at no later than 100 A.D., and very likely
somewhere around 80 A.D. John s writings, then, are the reminiscences of an elderly man looking
back on his time with the Messiah; the views presented in the gospel are more likely to be what he felt
and could believe in at the time of the writing, not at the time of his discipleship. This gives John s
gospel a more mature ambiance than those of the Synoptic writers, who were younger men, and more
inclined to write clear cut, propaganda packed texts.
Unlike the Synoptic writers, John avoids descriptions of the origins and early childhood of Jesus,
which none of the gospel writers would have known much about, except through less accurate tales
than the ones upon which the rest of the writings are based. John also includes a significant amount of
material not found in the
Synoptics. In addition to the Adulterous Woman, all the other material in John 2 4, which covers Jesus
early Galilean ministry, is not found in the Synoptics. Prior visits of Jesus to Jerusalem before the

Branded pharmaceutical firms, and Generic manufacturers? Healthcare is the most important factor
for the growth and well being of any country. If the governments cannot provide subsidies for
healthcare and Pharmaceutical firms just focus of their R D, the other groups can address these issues.
The National governments can play a major role. They have budget and relief funds allotted for the
poor. It can also ask the insurance companies to reduce the premium based on the income of the poor.
If the insurance and health coverage system is initiated by the national governments, the poor can
greatly benefit from this. The branded pharmaceutical firms account for more than 50% of worldwide
pharmaceutical sales. Thus they make huge profits. These profits can be used to fund hospitals in poor
areas. This will not only give the firms respect but also a good recognition. Generic medicines are

Why The Rich Are Getting Richer
Many people wonder in the world, why are the rich getting richer ? Which is a very important
question. Over countless years, the wealthy have found many ways around taxes like loopholes and
tax deductions. Meanwhile, the lower class are left lost and clueless to any sort of tips around taxes
and leaves them in turmoil. In Reich s Why the Rich are Getting Richer he goes on and explains just
that, why are the rich getting richer. The economic difficulties that have been circulating in America
have been making it challenging for people to pay their taxes, while only two percent of the
Americans are sitting on their high horse sponging up all their money. America is the way it is because
society doesn t sit down and take in that the wealthy are only getting richer while the poor or people in
poverty struggle to just keep up with their bills. One of the biggest things in the United States is social
security. It has put many people in trouble and I don t get why the rich are getting it after they retire.
Through the world we have always struggled with people not getting paid enough or people getting

The Color Purple Coming Of Age Essay
Steven Spielberg s The Color Purple, explores the sufferings that black women went through in the
1900s. Growing up, Celie has always been controlled and abused by men, being told not to smile
because she is ugly. Her entire childhood and early adulthood she has been treated as just an object,
being abused and raped by her father who then marries her off to a man named Albert, who just does
the same thing. The only person Celie ever truly loved, and who loved her back, was her sister Nettie,
who unfortunately was separated from her at a young age. While being abused and mistreated, she is
still able to find herself through the strength and determination to reconnect with her sister, relating to
the theme of The Color Purple as a coming of age film. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Celie reads one of Nettie s letters, telling of her time in Africa, Albert discovers her. Furious, he
slaps her across the face, exclaiming he has been calling her for an hour. He wants her to shave his
face. The mise en scene cuts to kids walking by Shug Avery on a beautiful sunny day, who asks them
Where s Celie? Fix n to shave Mister, one of them tells her. A tilt shot starts at her face, then slowly
goes down to her hands where she is painting her nails red, which sets the mood of the scene as dark
and frightening. She slowly stops painting her nails, as the scene cuts to Celie sharpening her blade,
and then to another scene in Africa of a man playing an instrument the same way Celie is sharpening
her blade. The scenes continue to switch between each other for about four minutes, showing
continuity editing and juxtapositions. The scene in Africa shows a village gathering around a boy and
a girl, who are appearing to be part of a ritual of getting their faces pierced, which I assume is a

Summary Of The Superfluous Woman By Vera Brittain
At the outbreak of World War One, British women were tied to a life of domesticity in the home.
However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The
war created opportunities for women to join the workforce and to fill in the vacant jobs left by the men
that went off to fight. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It
gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain
was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. The Great War was
responsible for the death of several hundred thousand men, many of which were young and unmarried.
The loss of these men left women single and/or widowed. Vera Brittain, poet of The Superfluous
Woman, was a victim of the war. Like many other women, she felt that her options were now more
than ever limited due to her fiance dying in the war. Vera Brittain (1893 1970), born in Newcastle
under Lyme, was the daughter of middle class parents, Arthur Brittain and Edith Bervon. Her only
brother, Edward, and Roland Leighton, friend of Edward, joined the British Army at the start of World
War I. Vera wanted to get involved in the war efforts. She served as a nurse and joined the Voluntary
Aid Detachment. Vera became engaged to Ronald in August of 1915. Unfortunately, four months after
she accepted his proposal, Ronald passed away in the trenches. Moreover, her brother died only a few

Folkway Norms In Our Culture
Norms are constantly changing and different in every culture. Norms are usually unnoticed in our
society. There are folkways and mores norms. Folkway norms specify proper behaviors and are less
violent and just rude which are stated was weak . Mores norms are stronger norms which violates
more demands. We re taught wrongs and rights while we re kids like sneezing into your elbow and
using manners. Other things are just common sense like facing forwards the doors in an elevator. In
our culture standing backwards in the elevator is not normal. People walk in and turn around to face
the door. For this assignment, I decided to break that norm. I was leaving a doctor s appointment and
had to take an elevator down to the first floor. I was about to turn around like a normal human but I

The Female Characters Of Shakespeare s Hamlet
Women have played small roles in society in the past. In social, economical, and political standings.
Therefore in Shakespeare s Hamlet the women in the play, their roles are not portrayed as important.
The female characters in the play such as Gertrude, Hamlet s mother and Ophelia Hamlet s lover are
complicated, and very much opposite of one another. Although these are two different characters
Shakespeare portrays them in a negative matter in their small roles. Their acceptance in the world, and
their grief is not allowed by the men in their life, or of the world. The women have no chance for
redemption in the play, follow the demands, and decisions the men make for them. Gertrude in the
play is Hamlet s mother. Her character is in the middle of the conflict of all the family drama.
Throughout the play she continues to keep the conflict between Hamlet and Claudius as if she is
innocent to not really knowing of the issues going on.(University of California Santa Cruz 1).Of
course the marriage arrangement upsets Hamlet, because it had happened so soon after the death of his
father. Gertrude being a woman she might have married Claudius for a sense of security from a man,
or guidance with owning the kingdom. However she also shows independence (Rogers 1) according to
Rogers Gertrude rebels against her religion, and the authority of her newlywed husband Claudius. In
the scene he tells Gertrude to not drink from the cup, and she proceeds to do so. As for her religion the

class assignment will consist of ten questions that are easy to answer if the student was attending to
what the professor was saying. All students will require a laptop or paper notebook to take notes on.
The classrooms necessary will be smaller rooms with a maximum of 40 seats per room. This small
size is necessary so the research assistants can ensure each student is using the correct method.
Additionally, one experimental condition will require the use of the app StayFocusd from Transfusion

stratovolcano that began to release pyroclastic flows in the early months of 1902, shortly after the
eruptions began it was evident that a larger eruption was imminent. In preparation for this eruption,
the town of about 25,000 people began to evacuate in groups of about 300 a day to a nearby town
called St. Pierre. On 5 May, a larger eruption occurred which caused further anxiety, but the Governor

people from leaving the area, which resulted in everyone left in the town (Abbott.) The VEI of the

HOW DOES CHARLES DICKENS CREATE SUSPENSE IN THE SIGNAL MAN?
Dickens creates suspense in the signal man by keeping us interested in a number of ways. He portrays
the mysterious and deadly setting, the introduction of the signal man and the impression of the
narrator fully. He also describes the spooky sight of the first ghost, the unusual second appearance of a
ghost and the death aboard the train.
Dickens presents the setting of his story vividly. Often, he uses such personification as angry sunset ;
to show that the narrator may be angry as the sun would be blazing down in his eyes. This helps create
suspense and make us want to read more. Immediately in the book, we are shown the setting. It is
described as a deep ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator believes that he is exact and ingulant and the safest of men employed , which starts to
build our curiosity not only of the man as he is gloomy and exact, but the plot. We start to expect that
something bad will happen and even a major twist in the plot.
In addition, we are told that he perused the fixed eyes and that the signal man gave grave dark regards
which adds more to our little understanding of the mysterious character. Grave dark regards is made to
sound as a warning as I believe he talked slowly, unsure of the man s (narrator) up coming actions.
The Signal Man is a ghost story, and as any story develops the writer must introduce the spectre. To
keep our interest in the book, he portrays the narrator s feelings against the signal man s visions.
Dickens writes, a disagreeable shudder crept over me , which suggests he was scared of the man s
story but refused to believe it. He may have refused to believe this as in those days, religion was much
dominant than it is now and in England around this time was Christian, and some parts of the
teachings see spectres as unclean and as blasphemy. However, the narrator does not come over as
religious, he is more scientific and perhaps believes it is the signal man s own delusions. The signal
man was said to have talked a tone lower than a whisper , that suggests he was weary of talking. The
word whisper to me is

at this point is to identify alternatives, i.e. alternative social arrangements to meet social objectives and
alternative technical arrangements to meet technical objectives. Socio technical alternatives are
combined social and technical alternatives hence, the technical terminology. These are categorised;
initially, by their fulfilment of objectives and secondly by costs, resources and constraints. This
method identifies the most effective socio technical solution and the related role sets, people tasks and

Social Media Issues In America
The United States of America is widely known as the greatest country in the world. But is it really just
that? Different researchers and their studies have proved this statement wrong. The obsession over
social media, lack of individuality, and the dating culture within America is simply morbid. While
many of these issues particularly pertain to millennials, they all can be applied to every age of life.
Society needs to fix and change these issues before they turn astronomical and irreversible.
Social media has corrupted the lives of the newer generation. It is no secret that technology has taken

Societal standards that are held within social media possesses the idea that you have to be like a
celebrity or someone who is widely known. Lip injections, liposuctions, and expensive brands are on
the rise now more than ever. It seems as if no one wants to be themselves any more, and it is
seemingly appalling. The lack of individuality begins at a very young age in this generation.
Otherwise known as peer pressure , children are expected to choose to either be like everyone else, or
make their own decisions and be a loner. In a scholarly article, Blöte, Miers, and Westenburg came to
the conclusion that The link between social anxiety and substance us in adolescence may be partly

American Youth Culture
The end of the World War II marked the beginning of a new era, not only for America but for the
entire world. In the United States, the end of the war was celebrated and hope for the future began.
America s future looked bright even though there still was uncertainty with the threat of the Soviet
Union. A distinctive youth culture emerged during the postwar era. Also the suburbs were considered a
popular place to live. It was a socially conservative time. Gender roles for men and women were
clearly defined. This era s emphasis was guided upon social conformity and family.
Kelley stated that the most popular comics of the Golden Age were the teen humor comics, most
notably the Archie comics (11). After the war superheroes declined, and a comic book seal of approval
was created. This seal made sure that comics were created wholesome, appropriate for the youth
culture and in good moral standing. There was to be no signs of homosexuality, perversion, sex before
marriage or disrespect to authority or the mention of alcohol and drugs. If Superman s goal was to
defeat the Nazis, then Archie s goal was to ask Betty to the big dance (Kelley 11). One example of

Nationalism And The Ideas Of The Second World War
Nationalism dominated in modern warfare. Nationalism, it spread like wild fire in the European parts
in the nineteenth century. It played a significant role in igniting the spark in World War as many nation

they feared it because it could revolutionized the minds of its colonial people. The Bourgeoisie were

Love Story Analysis
Love Story by Raelynn
Love Story is a well written and very good interpretation of a young girl with divorced parents. This
song was written by Raelynn. Her real whole name is Racheal Lynn Woodward, and she was born in
Baytown, Texas. Miranda Lambert s song, Me and Charlie Talking , made Raelynn want to become a
singer, and many of her fans are so happy that they get to listen to an amazing singer like her.
Her main reason to write this song was to get her feelings out about her parents divorce. In an
interview she states, It s about my parents getting a divorce and about being that kid stuck in the
middle and relaying information back and forth. She wrote about her parents asking about how the
other one is doing. She also wrote about having to go back and forth from one parent s house to
another. Many children go through this every day, and it is a tough time in their life. I went through
my parents divorcing, and when I heard this song, it just clicked with me and helped me understand
more of what I felt. I think she also wrote this song to help others who go through this with their
families.
Verse one of the song says, Southern bell statue standing in the screen door watching her whole world

Women s rights is the fight for the idea that women should have equal rights with men. Over history,
this has taken the form of gaining property rights, the women s suffrage, or the right of women to

treated like second class citizens solely because of their gender until a crucial movement in American
history during the late nineteenth century that would inspire a long fight for equality for generations to

The main organizer of the Seneca Falls Convention was Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who is deemed as

Negative Effects Of Technology On Adolescents
Effects of Technology on Adolescents In America today technology is always advancing. Technology
has made many positive impacts on adolescents such as online schooling, the ability to meet new
people, the opportunity to express and give their opinions, the ability to express themselves, and also
the resources to keep in contact with friends and family. Although there are many positives to
technology, there are also negatives such as distractions, technical difficulties, cyberbullying, online
hackers, and availability of resources. A study conducted by Pew Research Center collected data that
92 percent of teens reported going online daily (Lenhart). This proves that a majority of adolescents
are using technology in their everyday lives. Technology has allowed students to use the internet to
advance in their school work. The Internet is a primary research tool for teens. Census data indicates
that 85 percent of older teens 14 17 and 77 percent of tweens 10 13 go online to do schoolwork.
Among those teens who are online, 94 percent use the Internet for school research and 34 percent have
downloaded a study aid (The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation). Technology has also allowed
students to take classes online at a college while still in high school. I have personally interviewed two
students a Taylor High School, Emily Good who is enrolled in the college credit plus program, this
program allows her to take college classes online through Cincinnati State and receive a high

Were You Fired Due To Your Pregnancy?

PDA ) which amended Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ( Title VII ).
PDA prohibits discrimination against a job applicant or employee based on pregnancy, childbirth or
related medical conditions. This means that you may not be treated unfavorably due to your

It is also unlawful to harass an employee due to her pregnancy, childbirth or medical condition related
to her pregnancy or childbirth. Such harassment includes verbal abuse or insults and is illegal when it
reaches a level that is frequent or severe which creates a hostile or offensive work environment. It also
becomes harassment if it results in adverse employment decision either voluntarily or involuntarily. In
many cases the harasser is not only the victim s supervisor but also may be a supervisor in another
area, a co worker, or a client/customer.
PDA also allows disabled pregnant employees to take disability leave or leaves without pay if such
allowance is made to other temporarily disabled employees. Under the federal Family and Medical
Leave Act ( FMLA ), new parents (including foster and adoptive parents) are eligible for 12 weeks of
leave to care for the new child. To be eligible, the employee must have worked for the employer for 12
months prior to taking the leave and the employer must have a specified number of employees.
Additional rights under FMLA include the right to express milk in the workplace.
PDA s state counterpart is California s Fair Employment and Housing Act ( FEHA ) in the form of the
Pregnancy Disability Leave Law ( PDLL ) while FMLA s state

  • 2. Cleisthenes As An Opportunist Cleisthenes was the Athenian politician setting the stage of democracy around c.520 BC and to c.400 BC. An opportunist is defined by Oxford dictionaries as: A person who takes advantage of opportunities as and when they arise, regardless of planning or principle . For many, this sums up the rule of Cleisthenes as he took advantage of the anti tyrannical movement and of the power he was given to improve the position of himself and his Alcmaeonid family. However, this essay will argue that although Cleisthenes did take advantage of opportunities, he was ultimately very principled in nature and was actually a reactionist. This is to say that he reacted to problems and events that occurred and dealt with them the best he could, rather than taking advantage of the opportunity to better himself, the elite classes or his family. To many, Cleisthenes was simply an opportunist. One way he can be said to be opportunistic is during his rise to power. This idea has stemmed from the ancient Greek author Herodotus, and in parts Aristotle as well. On the whole, these are two ancient authors with semi opposing views, with Herodotus being a stronger source for stating Cleisthenes was an opportunist. The main reason most historians believe that Cleisthenes was an opportunist is because of the account from Herodotus histories. The account is as follows: these two [Isagoras and Cleisthenes] were rivals for power, and Cleisthenes, who was getting the worst of it, took the people into his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Ragged Dick, This was a time of progress, change and falsehood in American History. This is when people really started to chase the illusive American dream, and Alger is trying to capture this rags to riches vision. Neocolonialism in Jamaica Essay Neocolonialism in Jamaica: History, practices, and resistance The imposition of structural adjustment programs in the Third World since the 1970s has been characterized as a war against the poor, a process of [neo] recolonization (Turner, 1994: 37). This statement is particularly applicable to the country of Jamaica. The island has been susceptible to a variety of neocolonial acts including the presence of multinational corporations, structural adjustment programs, and loan organizations that have sucked Jamaica s economy dry. This neocolonial presence has devastated the population in more ways than one. It is apparent that neocolonialism has had and continues to have a large impact on society as a whole in Jamaica. There was a significant rise in population under British control. Their system allowed the colony to prosper as they gave new European settlers land to cultivate sugar cane and cocoa. The European planter has been described as a machine for making money (Waters, 1985: 22). The purpose of this colonial economic system was to provide raw materials and goods for the Mother Country. In addition, a general consumer market was developed to send wealth to Europe and allow for capital accumulation, all for the benefit of the colonizers. Slavery represents an important part of Jamaican history and the cultivated dominant atmosphere. For one, plantations highly depended on slave labor to maximize profit margins. Between 1655 and 1808 one million slaves were forcefully brought to Jamaica (Waters, 1985: 21 23). Persaud (2001: 72) suggests, the plantation system, the totality of institutional arrangements surrounding the production and marketing of plantation crops, has seriously affected society in Jamaica . In other words, the slave mode of production was a crucial factor in the establishment of Jamaica s structural society. Words of this nature have been questioned for thousands of years by naturalists, materialists, humanists, etc. and, in more recent times, have led to court cases, heated arguments, and public debates. The major debate intended to be covered in this piece is that of whether or not evolution should be taught in classrooms. Also, if it is to be taught, should it be taught as fact or theory? It is also intended to present enough evidence to disprove evolution altogether and, as a result, make it much less than a theory, but actually the vain opinions of a man who chose not to accept the truth. ... If they did not, they must have developed from preexisting species by some form of modification. Furthermore, if evolution were true, there would be countless fossils of transitional forms...., millions of fossils showing various stages in the gradual transition of kinds of organisms into different kinds...., and missing links (Parker, et al, 367). Charles Darwin himself recognized this problem: The number of intermediate varieties, which have formerly existed, must be truly enormous. Why then is not every geological formation and every stratum full of such intermediate links? Geology assuredly does not reveal any such finely graduated organic chain; and this, perhaps is the most obvious and serious objection to the theory (Parker, et al, 367). Darwin s doubts, however, do not stop there: To suppose that the eye...could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree (Parker, et al, 381). Assumptions Leininger presented a general theory statement in 1985, with the theory, I predict that different cultures perceive, know, and practice care in different ways, yet there are some commonalities about care among all the cultures in the world (Reynolds Leininger, pg 11). Leininger states the theory can help to show how culture affects nursing care and the way humans care for themselves. Leininger holds to the idea that care is the central concept for nursing theory and research. The theory has many assumptive premises which include; Care is essential for overall health and well being. Cultural care can provide a holistic way to improve and guide nursing practices. Nursing should be transcultural and meant to serve all of mankind. Different cultures will have both diversities and similarities. • 14. Reaction Rate Of Clock Reactions Introduction: Investigations into the mechanics of chemical kinetics can reveal invaluable information relating to the rates of reaction. There are numerable applications of reaction rates, knowledge in this area is pivotal for industrial, commercial and research sectors. Thus, allowing them the ability to manipulate a variety of factors of chemical reactions with the use of reaction rates. In the scope of the kinetics of clock reactions, there is a range of information that can be obtained about reaction rates (Shakhashiri, 1992). A clock reaction is characterised by an abrupt colour change following an established time lag (Lente et al, 2007). The induction period in a clock reaction is a result of low concentrations of the clock chemical (i.e. the chemical that enables the final reaction). The induction period ends after the total consumption of a limiting reagent, which initiates a short increase in the rate of product formation, resulting in a visible colour change (Schmitz, 2010)(Lente et al, 2007). The reaction rate of clock reactions is subject to factors including temperature, concentration, catalysis and inhibition. These factors can be manipulated, thus changing the length of the induction period in a clock like manner (Shakhashiri, 1992). Changes in the rate of reaction can be described in terms of chemical equilibrium. Chemical equilibrium is a state in which the forward and reverse reactions take place at the same rate (Wilbraham et al, 2002). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Oversexualization And Objectification Of Women The Oversexualization and Objectification of Women On all platforms of media, women and even young girls are oversexualized; thus leading to men viewing women as no more than breasts, vaginas, legs, or any other body part they prefer. Even in current television shows, movies, comic books, and advertisements, women are still depicted as sexual objects, which can damage a woman s confidence. The oversexualization of women s bodies can degrade a young woman s confidence, and when girls try to boost confidence by dressing or acting like the women they see in the media, they are reprimanded for it. Girls cannot be blamed for their sexualization; they are just emulating what they see in the media. On television and in movies, women are often portrayed as the love interest for the main male character or the succubus that tries to gain the main character s love through temptation. Most the women depicted in the romances are white, thin, and busty. Often the attractive female lead has a best friend who is deemed overweight and never receives any romantic interactions. The only goal the female character has is to gain the attention of the main character. In other movies and television shows when the female character is not considered attractive, she must go through a complete makeover before her love interest even notices her. This gives John s gospel a more mature ambiance than those of the Synoptic writers, who were younger men, and more inclined to write clear cut, propaganda packed texts. • 23. Summary Of The Superfluous Woman By Vera Brittain At the outbreak of World War One, British women were tied to a life of domesticity in the home. However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The war created opportunities for women to join the workforce and to fill in the vacant jobs left by the men that went off to fight. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. The Great War was responsible for the death of several hundred thousand men, many of which were young and unmarried. The loss of these men left women single and/or widowed. Vera Brittain, poet of The Superfluous Woman, was a victim of the war. Like many other women, she felt that her options were now more than ever limited due to her fiance dying in the war. Vera Brittain (1893 1970), born in Newcastle under Lyme, was the daughter of middle class parents, Arthur Brittain and Edith Bervon. Dickens creates suspense in the signal man by keeping us interested in a number of ways. He portrays the mysterious and deadly setting, the introduction of the signal man and the impression of the narrator fully. He also describes the spooky sight of the first ghost, the unusual second appearance of a ghost and the death aboard the train. Dickens presents the setting of his story vividly. Often, he uses such personification as angry sunset ; to show that the narrator may be angry as the sun would be blazing down in his eyes. This helps create suspense and make us want to read more. The narrator believes that he is exact and ingulant and the safest of men employed , which starts to build our curiosity not only of the man as he is gloomy and exact, but the plot. We start to expect that something bad will happen and even a major twist in the plot. In addition, we are told that he perused the fixed eyes and that the signal man gave grave dark regards which adds more to our little understanding of the mysterious character. Grave dark regards is made to sound as a warning as I believe he talked slowly, unsure of the man s (narrator) up coming actions. The Signal Man is a ghost story, and as any story develops the writer must introduce the spectre. To keep our interest in the book, he portrays the narrator s feelings against the signal man s visions. Dickens writes, a disagreeable shudder crept over me , which suggests he was scared of the man s story but refused to believe it. He may have refused to believe this as in those days, religion was much dominant than it is now and in England around this time was Christian, and some parts of the teachings see spectres as unclean and as blasphemy. However, the narrator does not come over as religious, he is more scientific and perhaps believes it is the signal man s own delusions. The signal man was said to have talked a tone lower than a whisper , that suggests he was weary of talking. The word whisper to me is used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
