2. Assignment No: 1
Topic name: How computer components work
What is a computer
Computer is a device which manipulates information, performs processes, calculations and opera-
tions based on instructions provided by user. So basically it accepts data (input), process the data,
and then gives output.
Computer is also used for storing data. Nowadays, computer is used for many purposes, like
web browsing, development, video editing, document writing, playing games etc. Computer is
designed to provide us various real life solutions by combining integrated hardware and software
components.
Computer components
There are a lot of components that are being used in computer for different uses. They have
different use cases. Some of them are used for taking input, some of them are used for processing
data, some for storing data, and some for showing outputs. There are 5 types of components for
computer.
3. 1. Motherboard
A Motherboard is a printed circuit board that connects all the computer components together
to communicate with each other.
2. Central Processing Unit
The main chip in a computer is the microprocessor chip, which is also known as the CPU
(Central Processing Unit). CPU is the brain of the computer. When we give some instruc-
tions to the computer through any programming language, it breaks that down into assembly
language, and then executes those instructions. The CPU is mounted on the main board or
mother board. It controls the activities of other chips as well as outside devices connected to
the computer, such as monitor, printer, mouse, keyboard.
3. Graphics Processing Unit
Graphics Processing Unit is used to generate high-end visuals. It is mainly used by gamers,
but also used for editing photos, videos and creating 3D model.
4. 4. RAM Unit
Memory unit is called “Primary Storage” which retains temporary data till further process.
This is called Random Access Memory or RAM. This memory is volatile, means data is
cleared when power is lost.
5. Storage Unit
Another type of storage is “Secondary Storage” which retain digital data after processing
for permanently. Like HDD or SSD. This storage is non volatile. Computer CPU doesn’t
directly access this storage, rather they get accessed by input and output units. Then the
contents of this storage are transferred to primary storage (RAM) and then CPU can access
it.
