This PPT is related to Health Informatics for BSc NURSING First year as per revised syllabus. Hope there are no contents related to this subject as it is a new introduced subject to the nursing course. I 'm Vineetha Abraham Assit.Lecturer in nursing from Mangalore.
3. Parts of Computer
Computer is made up of different physical
parts & programmed with different languages
to carry out a set of algorithms and arithmetic
instructions.
Each part has an important role to play and
helps perform a specific task.
Computer parts are generally divided into
internal and external parts.
4. Two parts of Computer
Internal Parts:
Refer to built-in
components & are placed
inside the computer case
such as motherboard, CPU,
RAM, etc.
External Parts:
Refer to components that
are attached to the
computer using one of the
ports linked to the
motherboard.
Eg: Mouse, Keyboard,
speakers, webcam, etc.
5. 1. Monitor
Also called the visual display unit, it is one of the
essential parts of a computer system.
It is made of glass, circuitry, adjustment buttons,
power supplies, etc., all enclosed within a casing.
The monitor is connected to a computer and displays
output like text, image or video on the screen.
LED ( Light- emitting diode) and LCD (Liquid crystal
display) monitors are most prevalent these days.
6. 2. Keyboard
It is one of the primary input devices which helps to
interact with the computer system.
A keyboard is one of the ways to communicate with a
computer.
The keyboard’s layout is similar to that of a typewriter.
It has a set of keys such as alphabetical keys,
character keys, functional keys, arrow keys and
control keys.
When we press a key on the keyboard, the computer
receives input from the keyboard.
There are two types of keyboards: Mechanical &
Membrane type.
7. 3. Mouse
Is an input device which helps to communicate with the
computer system.
It allows the user to move a pointer displayed on the
monitor.
It can be wired or wireless. A typical mouse usually has
three buttons: right, left and middle roller button.
There are two types of mice (plural form of mouse):
Mechanical and optic.
The mechanical mouse uses a ball and roller, the optical
mouse use laser technology to track the movements of
the cursor and allows for accurate precision and smooth
movement.
8. 4.Computer Case
It is a special box which holds all the internal
components of a computer.
It includes motherboard, central processing unit, power
supply, drives, memory & writing.
The front of the computer case usually provides access
to the power on / off button, CD/DVD drives and some
ports such as USB, audio jack, etc.
On the back are sockets for connecting a monitor,
power cord, etc.
9. 5. Motherboard
Also called as the main board, this circuit board holds
all the different electronic components and peripherals
of the computer system.
These are interconnected so as to allow
communication with each other and functioning of the
computer.
The input & output devices are plugged into the
motherboard for function.
It consists of CPU, RAM, ROM, sound card, video
card, network card, ports for input, output and storage
devices, etc.
10. 6. CPU
Central Processing Unit – is one of the core components of
computer system.
Is also known as the brain of the computer, processor, central
processor, or microprocessor.
No action can take place without its permission and execution.
It communicates with all other components of the computer.
It has three parts: Memory unit, control unit, arithmetic & logic
Unit.
All these components help in the efficient working and processing of
the data.
11. 7. Graphics processing Unit (GPU)
Also called as Video adaptor, Video card and display
card help to generate high end visuals.
This electronic circuit displays high quality images &
graphics by performing rapid mathematical
calculations..
It helps to process 2D data and 3D data.
Higher the quality of the graphic card , higher is the
quality of visual effects on the computer screen.
12. 8. Fan
It is an internal part of a computer system that helps to
keep the computer & its components cool by circulating
air.
This prevents overheating & physical damage to the
computer thereby extending the life of the computer.
13. 9. Memory
Memory units typically store data and instructions for core
system files and configuration.
The internal memory of a computer is mainly of two types: RAM
& ROM
Random access memory (RAM)- is a basic computer part
which serves as a computer’s primary memory for temporary
storing of current data or on-going data. It is also known as
volatile memory as it gets erased every time the computer
restarts. It has a fast read/write speed and can be accessed
quickly by the computer.
Read-Only Memory(ROM) – it is a non-volatile storage medium
that stores essential computer data. It keeps the stored data
even after the power is turned off.
14. 10. Storage
Computers needs to store all the data and they either
have a hard disk drive (HDD) or a solid state drive
(SDD) for this purpose.
These storage devices are used to store long-term
data.
The data saved in these devices are available until it is
deleted.
HDD are disks that store data which is read by a
mechanical arm.
SSD are like SIM card faster than hard drives.
15. 11. Speakers
Speakers are optional parts of a computer.
They can be connected to a computer to get audio
output while listening to a class.
Speakers are attached to the sound card and convert
the electromagnetic waves into audible audio waves.
These speakers also have amplifiers that enable us to
adjust the volume level of sound output.
Many monitors and laptop computers come with built -
in speakers.
16. 12. Mic
The mic or microphone is another optional part of the
computer.
It gives voice input to the computer system.
It perceives sounds from the surroundings and converts
these sounds into electronic signals. These signals are
further converted into digital forms to be stored on the
computer.
Mic is needed when we need to insert audio into our
presentation, do voice conferencing, recording,
broadcasting, giving voice command to the computer,
etc.
17. 13. Webcam
This is also an optional part of the computer
system mainly used to capture images and
videos and send them in digital form to a
computer.
They must be connected to the computer for
proper functioning.
Webcam helps to make videos, do video
conferencing, live broadcasting, etc.
18. Other optional parts of a computer system are CD, DVD
drive, uninterruptible power supply device, printer, scanner,
etc.
A computer user can control it by input devices such as
keyboard, mouse, touch screen and also with voice
commands or hand gestures, etc.
19. FEATURES OF COMPUTER
Two Principal characteristics of a Computer are:
1. It responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-
defined manner.
2. It can execute a pre-recorded list of instructions (a
program).
- It has the ability to accept data, process it, and then
produce outputs.
- It can store data in appropriate storage devices and
retrieve whenever necessary.
- They are designed to execute applications and provide a
variety of solutions by combining integrated hardware and
software components.
