This work focused on traffic audits and investigation of the vertical speed control devices installed at crossroads as traffic speed being controlled but rear-end accidents can still be found. The speed monitoring through 85th percentile speeds for various types of vehicles: i) passenger cars, ii) pickup trucks, iii) motorbikes, and iv) passenger buses and lorries (i.e., more than four wheels vehicles) was performed. Discussion and recommendation from the obtained results have been made. As an alternative choice to reduce crossroad rear-end collisions, this work introduced crossroad speed table.

A sidewalk as part of the road facilities to secure the pedestrian safety in Korea shall be provided when the pedestrian and vehicle traffic reach to a certain level but applying this regulation to the rural road where there are less pedestrian traffic but vehicle traffic at high speed and thus the driver's attention to the pedestrians is relatively low is not rational. Thus the installation of the sidewalk shall be determined, taking into account of the pedestrian traffic accident record and the characteristics from the viewpoint of traffic environment to the pedestrian. Installation of sidewalk is greatly dependent on economic efficiency, particularly to the rural road. For rational investment within the given budget, it's necessary to determine the priority with regard to sidewalk installation, considering the pedestrian safety, regional society's need and installation effect comprehensively. Thus this study is intended to propose the evaluation items and quantitative method with regard to the installation priority in consideration of the function of the road to be installed, regional social and cultural characteristics and overall road and traffic conditions such as pedestrian traffic pattern and school.
The Effects of Countdown Signals on Intersection Capacity drboon
This study presents the effects of countdown signals on the total start-up lost time of automobiles at signalized intersections based on the data collected at intersections in Bangkok, Thailand. This countdown signal is used to warn motorists in queue at the stop line during any red phase on when the green phase will be started. The data indicated that the countdown signals did not have any effects on the saturation headway of automobiles, but on the total start-up lost time. With the use of the countdown signals, the total start-up lost time was decreased from 4.3 seconds to 2.9 seconds, or was reduced by thirty-three percent. Therefore, the countdown signals may be used to increase the capacity of signalized intersections.
Designing of a Traffic Signaling System at T-IntersectionIJERA Editor
The traffic signal design of the intersection has a direct control on its safety and operation from a design and user-ability point of view. We identified Kothavalasa T-Intersection has been arise problems like road accidents, conflicts and congestions. Design elements that are particularly important include the number of lanes provided on each approach and for each movement. These problems can solve by providing an efficient traffic signal control at the intersection for continuous movement of vehicles through the intersection. According to traffic signal, most traffic signal timing plans are designed to minimize vehicle delay based on the volumes seen in the past, not the present. Traffic count studies are to be made to determine the number, movement and classification of vehicles at an intersection. Signal timing is most important which is used to decide green time of the traffic light shall be provided at an intersection and how long the pedestrian walk signal should be provided. By using Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) intersection saturation for identifying periods of time when cycle length could be substantially short. These data is used identify normal flow of the roadway; determine the influence of heavy vehicles or pedestrians on vehicular traffic volume. Webster’s minimum delay cycle length equation overestimates the optimal cycle length compared to the results based on the HCM 2000 method. This is due to the restructuring of the HCM 2000 delay equation as compared to the original Webster’s delay calculation.

A traffic management system is essential for better mobility in terms of cost, safety, comfort, and time savings, among other factors. A traffic management system assures the safety of not only car occupants but also pedestrians crossing the road. The work primarily focuses on analysing traffic volume using software and manual counts on two types of roads, namely broad lane and service lane. This study comprises using the Picomixer STA Smart Traffic Analyzer programme to count the number of different types of vehicles, which are classified as light vehicles Cars, SUVs, etc. , medium loading vehicles trucks, minibuses , and heavy vehicles Trucks, Minibuses, etc . Trailers, Big trucks etc. .On the broad lane, traffic peaks during the day and at night, while it remains light and medium during the middle of the day. This trend also affects the rush in the service lane, which follows a similar pattern. Increased traffic and longer signal halt times encourage drivers to use the alternate service lane, which increases congestion in the narrow service lane and raises the danger of accidents. Longer signal halts were discovered to be the most important factor to consider when choosing a service lane. Reduced signal timing can have an impact on typical service lane and broad lane utilisation, as well as traffic management. Road bumps reduce vehicle speeds on residential streets and other densely populated areas, thus improving safety and comfort for pedestrians and bicyclists. Unfortunately, the effects on health and safety for drivers and passengers passing these obstacles are rarely considered by road agencies, consultants and contractors. Many current bumps induces harmful whole-body vibration and shock when passing, even at legal speeds. Injuries can be immediate, e.g. fracture of vertebrae, or long term, e.g. low back pain. Bus drivers in many cities pass up to 40.000 bumps per year. The bumps will also cause additional longitudinal and vertical stress to the vehicle. A literature review shows that previous research on the subject of road bumps has been severely misinterpreted. As a result, bumps are in many countries today designed to cause a high maximum vertical acceleration (shock) level. To cause shocks on purpose, is in obvious conflict with ergonomic knowledge such as in directive 2002/44/EC. In a project described in this paper, a “shock-free” speed hump has been designed using vibration engineering. The new hump cause uncomfortable vibration at high driving speeds, but only a minimum of shock occur when passing. In a world of rapidly increasing urbanization, striving to develop more livable cities, the city’s streets designing and planning should be high on the agenda for policymakers, city planners and other practitioners, as well as researchers. Designing streets is not as easy as it might originally seem, however, done correctly it means that one third of the city was designed successfully with an immense impact on the rest of the city. The key challenge in developing sustainable and fulfilling streets is to develop an integrated approach in planning them, where it is necessary to consider all aspects involved. Meanwhile, efforts devoted to this topic vary considerably from place to place. Thus, this paper aims at discussing the main elements involved in designing streets for a livable city, in a comprehensive approach including pedestrians, vehicles, and parking areas.
Impact of Building Envelope Modification on Energy Performance of High-Rise A...drboon
In residential buildings, providing comfortable living environment for building occupants is a major challenge for architects, engineers and those who involved in the building industry. It is reported that considerable energy is consumed to provide and maintain acceptable indoor conditions for thermal comfort in residential buildings in hot-humid climate. The observable increase in energy consumption is chiefly resulting from the growing use of air conditioning system. There are various energy conservation measures which can be applied to reduce energy consumption and among these measures are passive envelope design measures. This paper addresses the energy performance of selected high-rise apartments in Kuala Lumpur. Energy Plus software is utilized in measuring the performance because of its availability, validity and accuracy. Possible energy savings due to passive envelope design measures integration are investigated. This includes investigating the effect of thermal insulation and glazing type on potential energy savings.
Enhancement of Space Environment Via Healing Gardendrboon
Green nature, sunlight and fresh air have been known as important component of healing in healthcare facilities. This paper presents the finding of an exploratory study on healing garden elements in healthcare facilities. The purpose of the paper is to find the elements of healing gardens and its healing factors in the existing garden design. In conducting this research study, site observation and informal interview at selected healthcare facilities have been performed. The study reveals the elements of existing garden design, the interactivity and the end users expectation on a garden. The finding shows that lacking some of the elements of garden design lead to less user friendliness and interactivity in the garden. It also shows that the visibility, accessibility, quietness and comfortable condition in the garden give impact to the utilization of the garden.
Design of Quadruped Walking Robot with Spherical Shelldrboon
We propose a new quadruped walking robot with a spherical shell, called "QRoSS." QRoSS is a transformable robot that can store its legs in the spherical shell. The shell not only absorbs external forces from all directions, but also improves mobile performance because of its round shape. In rescue operations at a disaster site, carrying robots into a site is dangerous for operators because doing so may result in a second accident. If QRoSS is used, instead of carrying robots in, they are thrown in, making the operation safe and easy. This paper reports details of the design concept and development of the prototype model. Basic experiments were conducted to verify performance, which includes landing, rising and walking through a series of movements.
Motion Analysis of Pitch Rotation Mechanism for Posture Control of Butterfly-...drboon
We developed a small flapping robot on the basis of movements made by a butterfly with a low flapping frequency of approximately 10 Hz, a few degrees of freedom of the wings, and a large flapping angle. In this study, we clarify the pitch rotation mechanism that is used to control its posture during takeoff for different initial pitch and flapping angles by the experiments of both manufactured robots and simulation models. The results indicate that the pitch angle can be controlled by altering the initial pitch angle at takeoff and the flapping angles. Furthermore, it is suggested that the initial pitch angle generates a proportional increase in the pitch angle during takeoff, and that certain flapping angles are conducive to increasing the tendency for pitch angle transition. Thus, it is shown that the direction of the flight led by periodic changing in the pitch angle can be controlled by optimizing control parameters such as initial pitch and flapping angles.
Analysis of Roll Rotation Mechanism of a Butterfly for Development of a Small...drboon
In this paper, we investigated the aerodynamic characteristics during roll rotation of a butterfly based on computational fluid dynamics using a three-dimensional high-speed camera information. This method allows to create a numerical model of a butterfly from the camera images and to analyze the flow field corresponding to the captured behavior. We photographed two behaviors different in rotational axis and analyzed the roll rotational mechanism. In a typical pitch rotational flight, the differential pressure was concentrated on the tip of fore wings. The magnitudes of reaction forces on left and right wings were roughly matched each other. On the other hands, the differential pressure of the roll rotational flight was distributed in the whole of wings. The magnitude of the right reaction force was twice greater than that of left at the first down stroke. The roll angle changed largely at the same time. These results show that a butterfly rotates about roll by changing the reaction forces on each side.
Effect of Oryzalin on Growth of Anthurium andraeanum In Vitrodrboon
Apical shoots and lateral buds of Anthurium andraeanum about 0.5 cm grew very well when cultured on MS medium supplemented with NAA, kinetin, sucrose and gelrite. When brought young plantlets (the same sized) of A. andraeanum soaked in various concentrations of oryzalin with different duration times. The A. andraeanum plantlets were subcultured into the same medium every 4 weeks for 3 times. It was found that 5.0 mg/l oryzalin with 24 and 72 hours gave the best average number of leaves per bunch, plant height and diameter of bunch. These parameters were reverse proportion, when increased concentration of oryzalin, the growth rate in each parameter was decreased with thick and pale green leaves.
Role of 2,4-D on Callus Induction and Shoot Formation to Increase Number of S...drboon
Stem node of Miniature Rose with axillary bud were used as explants. These explants cultured on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of 2,4-D. It was found that MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l 2,4-D gave the highest number of green callus. The callus cultured on MS medium supplemented with different combinations of NAA and BA to form new shoot and root. From the result, we are able to find the highest number of young shoots that were induced from callus when cultured callus on MS medium supplemented with NAA and BA. When subcultured all new shoots with the same size to MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of NAA and BA, and 2,4- D for six weeks. The result was significant difference (P≤0.5) when compared the average height of plant and percentage of root formation, but their duration time for flowering were not significant different.
Seismic Capacity Comparisons of Reinforced Concrete Buildings Between Standar...drboon
Earthquakes are cause of serious damage through the building. Therefore, moment resistant frame buildings are widely used as lateral resisting system. Generally three types of moment resisting frames are designed namely Special ductile frames (SDF), Intermediate ductile frames (IDF) and Gravity load designed (GLD) frames, each of which has a certain level of ductility. Comparative studies on the seismic performance of three different ductility of building are performed in this study. The analytical models are considered about failure mode of column (i.e. shear failure, flexural to shear failure and flexural failure); beam-column joint connection, infill wall and flexural foundation. Concepts of incremental dynamic analysis are practiced to assess the required data for performance based evaluations. This study found that the lateral load capacity of GLD, IDF, and SDF building was 19.25, 27.87, and 25.92 %W respectively. The average response spectrum at the collapse state for GLD, IDF, and SDF are 0.75 g, 1.19 g, and 1.33 g, respectively. The results show that SDF is more ductile than IDF and the initial strength of SDF is close to IDF. The results indicate that all of frames are able to resistant a design earthquake.

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are thin hydraulic barriers which contain the bentonite sandwiched between geotextiles or geomembrane. Bentonite swelling is a very common phenomenon observed in GCLs. It is one of the major causes for permeability reduction in hydraulic barriers. The aim of this study is to characterize the swelling behavior of bentonite in GCLs by exchangeable cations. X-ray diffraction test and scanning electron microscopy were used to quantify the swelling characteristics of this bentonite under contact with salt solutions, as in the hydraulic barriers. The results from X-ray diffraction test showed that the presence of clay minerals was swelling montmorillonite. The swell volume of bentonite decreases with increasing valence of cations. In the case of the same valence the free swell volume of bentonite increased with decreasing concentration of permeant liquids. From another test, the scanning electron microscopy, it can be seen that the bentonite appears as corn flake like crystals for air-dried bentonite. However, specimen permeated with salt solutions, the clay has become more porous and fluffy and porous size seemed to be diminished.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

2. Traffic calming is engineering solution for speed control. Traffic calming has so far
usually been implemented through installation of highway engineering measures (such as speed
hump, speed table), which do not influence the driver’s ‘state of mind’, but physically restrict
the manner in which the vehicle is driven (Department for Transport, 2007). Road safety is a
top priority and traffic calming devices are helpful.
For speed deterrence and safety impacts, simple traffic management is therefore of
particular interests. Application of traffic calming devices gains attention due to
self-enforcement (Ewing, 1999) and easiness and cheap to install, especially speed bumps and
speed humps. However, improper uses of such devices may cause specific and immediate
hazards to all stakeholders as well as create pollution due to vehicle acceleration (Chadda &
Cross, 1985). This work investigates the installed speed control devices at crossroads through
observations made at various locations. Recommendation will be given to eliminate their
drawbacks through adjustment and enhancement of the speed control devices installed at
crossroads.
2. Background
Paradigm of this study took places at Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus (TU-Rs),
Thailand. Traffic management within the community area of the Thammasat University is
concerned with large multi-facilities zones comprising of educational complexes, sport
complex, residential complexes, hospital complex, canteens, banks, and stores. Plan of
Thammasat University is essentially gridiron plan (grid street plan), and there are many
crossroads and T-junctions. Key transportation mode to access all facilities is by using
roadways. Roadways users include pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, personal cars,
university public buses, metropolitan buses, and employees transport buses. Some parts of
roadways are two lanes with two-way driving, while the others are four lanes with two-way
driving. For all the roadways, there is no type of access control. These multi-purposes
roadways are therefore produced safety concerns to the university. Statistically, the most
conflict points are at the intersection points where accidents are frequently occurred.
Having study on the causes of accidents, it is found that behavior of road users is the

3. critical factor triggering more severe accidents, especially violations of speed limits signs by
speedy vehicles. The TU-Rs has therefore initiated its traffic management program, focusing
on self-enforcement of roadways users through the use of traffic calming devices. Speed
control devices (speed bumps/humps) have been extensively installed campus-wide for more
than ten years. In essence, these devices are aimed at improving safety with reduction of
vehicular speeds.
Even though, speed humps have been widely employed in many countries like USA, EU
countries, Australia, and others, the speed control devices utilized in TU-Rs encounter some
particular concerns and problems. For example, although such devices have been installed at
all legs of crossroads to delay traffic, accidents can still occasionally be found. Thus this work
tries to investigate the causes of problems as well as to enhance the efficiency of the devices.
3. Vertical deflection speed control devices
With physical design techniques, speed control devices trigger physical impediments to
speeding. Important vertical deflection traffic speed control devices to be discussed are speed
bumps, speed humps, and speed table.
3.1 Speed bumps
Speed bumps should have height 7.6-15 cm and, travel length 30-90 cm, with vehicular
passing speeds around 8 km/hr or less (Elizer Jr, 1993). Some road users are unhappy about
speed bumps since they can cause immediate and specific hazard, especially for bicycles, fire
trucks, and others. Noise and air pollution also can be found as vehicles accelerated after
passing the devices (Chadda & Cross, 1985).

4. 3.2 Speed humps
Being widespread used by EU countries, USA, and many others (Elizer Jr, 1993), the
popular Watt profile speed humps developed by the Britain’s Transport and Road Research
Laboratory (TRRL) should have height 7.6-10.2 cm and, travel length 3.66-4.27 m (Chadda &
Cross, 1985) (Ewing, 1999), with vehicular passing speeds around 24 km/hr or less. Speed
between a series of humps is about 40-48 km/hr, depending on size and shape of the humps.
Comparing the profiles with bumps as given in Figure 1, humps are more relatively gradual
than bumps, thus produce less driver discomfort, and less damage to vehicles. In addition,
humps cause less pollution and noise due mainly to not as much of vehicular acceleration after
passing the devices.

Profiles of speed hump may be sinusoidal (a sine wave), circular (a segment of a circle),
parabolic, or flat-topped as portrayed in Figure 2. Sinusoidal profile provides the shallowest
initial rise, thus giving a more comfortable ride at about 40 km/hr (County of Hawaii, 2007).
Regardless of profile, recommended height of road hump should be less than 7.6 cm
(Department for Transport, 2007).

5. Parabolic profile hump for height 3, 3.5, and 4 inches has been developed by TRRL in
Great Britain as given in Figure 3 (Elizer Jr, 1993). For parabolic hump profile for height 3
inches, the longer base length (from 3.66 m to 4.27 m) yields slightly increased speed (from 32
km/hr to 37 km/hr), thus provides a more comfortable drive.
3.3 Speed tables
Speed table, the so-called trapezoidal humps or speed platforms, is in fact speed hump with
flat-topped. Popular speed table is Seminole profile, designed by Seminole County of Florida,
as demonstrated in Figure 4. Speed table normally has travel length 6.7m (22 ft) with height
7.6-9.2 cm with straight or parabolic approaches. Bricks or some special texture materials
may be applied at flat-topped area. Considering 85th percentile speed for speed table,
traversing speed is in a range 40-48 km/hr. Comparing to speed humps, speed tables thus yield
much gentler drives (Ewing, 1999).

If marking for pedestrian crossing, speed tables are called raised crosswalks or raised
crossings. Many parts of the US have shift from speed humps to speed table. The reasons are
1) to accommodate public transports such as fire vehicles, 2) to represent attempts to move
beyond local streets to collectors and arterials, where standard speed humps cannot
accommodate high volumes and speeds, and 3) to serve as raised crosswalks (Ewing, 1999).

6. 4. Auditing of crossroad installed vertical deflection speed control
devices
Vertical deflection speed control devices have been installed at TU-Rs more than 60
locations campuswide. However, this work focused on the investigation related to
appropriateness and effectiveness of the devices installed at a crossroad, at TU-Rs. Total three
crossroads were studied, but only one is reported as similar results were obtained.
4.1 Profiles of the installed devices
Since about 1998, sizes and shapes of the TU-Rs devices have been altered from bumps
closer to humps, thus providing less awkward drive. Even though with such continuous
development, the devices were still have some adverse characteristics, as evident by scratches
on the devices. In addition, it was noticed from observation that when vehicles passing the
device there were body-shakes impact due to front and rear wheels jostling the devices. This
gave rather nuisance experiences, even with speed 25 km/hr or less.
4.2 Location of the installed devices
The devices have been placed all legs of crossroads. However, the devices are not at the
corners of crossroad, but at various distances about 10 m, 20 m, and 30 m.
4.3 Traffic sign
Traffic signs are important as to inform motorists to be aware of the devices installed
ahead. From field measurement, distances from installed traffic signs to devices are in ranges
between 10-30m. Examples of traffic signs are displayed in Figure 5. The leftmost sign was
partially obstructed by tree. The middle sign and the crossroad was too far from the installed
device.

4.4 Pavement marking
Pavement marking provides another important visual warning for motorists preparing to
slow down vehicular speeds. Alternating yellow and white paint pattern has been
implemented as portrayed Figure 6. The paint has been partially peeled off.

8. 5. Speed monitoring
Speed monitoring field survey was performed as before and after vehicles passing the
devices installed at crossroads. A video camera was setup to record movement of passing
vehicles. For each straight line observation along crossroads, total 16 marks were made on the
ground with 10m interval. There were five portions (50m) before vehicle approaching the first
device and another five portions after vehicle leaving the second devices, as detailed in Figure
8.

In this study, speeds of motorists driving behavior had been observed. In order to clearly
examine speed behaviors, vehicles are classified into four groups: i) passenger cars, ii) pickup
trucks, iii) motorbikes, and iv) passenger buses and lorries (i.e., more than four wheels
vehicles). Such groupings were done according to engine powers as well as dimensions of the
vehicles.
6. Study result and discussion
6.1 Result and discussion of vehicular speed
From the investigation, the devices seemed to working effectively, specially at distance
about 20m before and after passing the device, as given in Figure 9. Vehicular 85th percentile
speeds of all kinds of vehicles were about 20 km/hr. However, speed at the intersection area

9. went higher to 30 km/hr or more, where in fact low speed is required. This was due to that the
vehicles needed to get through as fast as possible. The true objective of installing of the device
thus cannot be wholly fulfilled. Another important aspect is that after the vehicles already
passed the intersection area vehicles need to speed down again in order to pass the second
device. This can sometimes cause rear end accidents, as the following vehicles speeding up to
pass the intersection area.

6.2 Recommendation for adjustment and enhancement of the vertical
speed control devices installed at crossroads
6.2.1 Adjustment through devices reposition
As observed from Figure 9, 85th percentile speed in the position 20 m is less than 30 km/hr
are desired speed for vehicle passing the intersection area. Therefore, relocations of the
installed devices are needed to accommodate this requirement. The new positions of the
devices should be right at the corner of the crossroads, as illustrated in Figure 10(a), so speed
will be lowest during entering the crossroads. Traffic sign should also be installed at a proper
distance before approaching the devices.

6.2.2 Enhancement the devices
Profiles of the devices should be altered to provide more comfortable drives. Speed
humps with sinusoidal or parabolic shapes are recommended, as discussed in section 3.2.
This, together with reposition of the devices discussed in section 6.2.1, should reduce accident
rates of rear-end collision to be minimal. Also, painting maintenance of the devices should be
frequently performed.
6.2.3 Adjustment through the use of crossroad speed table
As from discussed above about the pros of speed table, therefore it is possible to adapt
speed table to be used at crossroad, as exampled in Figure 10 (b). Crossroad speed table can
provide more attentions to all stakeholders. As it elevated the vehicles, the motorists will have
a better sight, other than increased awareness. In addition, there is no stop as no a second
bump (hump) device, thus rear end collisions should be totally eliminated.
7. Concluding Remark
This work involved observation of the use of vertical speed control devices installed at
crossroads. Having investigated on traffic speed and traffic accident, recommendation on
enhancement as well as adjustment of the devices has been made. As compared to bump,
speed humps provide a much smoother and more gradual flow of vehicle speeds. All the
devices should be reshaped to have hump profile. The devices should also be repositioned to
the intersection corners.
Crossroad speed table was introduced for traffic control with many expected advantages.
However, more study about crossroad speed table is needed to confirm the effectiveness.
