Modernism In The Great Gatsby
Modernism and Realism reflected in Fitzgerald and Chopin
American Realism and Modernism are reflected in the authors and works we read through the
characters actions and the overall tones of each work. Both Chopin and Fitzgerald are celebrated
authors, known for their groundbreaking works during their lifetime.
Realism is a literary period where authors focused on making their stories and characters more
realistic and organic, reflecting on real life experiences, while Modernism is a literary period where
many authors reflected the disillusionment from the First World War in their works through the
creation of a new modern hero and the build a self theme. After World War I (also known as the Great
War), the nation no longer believed in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A well known work of Chopin s, A Pair of Silk Stockings , is short, sweet, and touches on many ideas
of Realism in its passages. The main character is Mrs. Sommers, a poor widow and hardworking
mother, falls under the lure of $15 and slips from her harsh reality to indulge in the lavish life she once
lived, [the money] gave her a feeling of importance such as she had not enjoyed for years . She longs
for the freedom and carelessness of her younger years, before she had to be smart with every cent for
the well being of her children and herself, but through her escape from reality and indulging in her
desires, we see her drift away from the smart mother who would not carelessly throw money around to
a woman who just wants to be free from the harsh reality of her life, even if it is just for a

Nepal s Present Is Reflexive of Its History
Nepal s present is reflective of its history. Within the past few years, the country has been in a state of
disarray because its history has been fraught with political turmoil. As a whole, Nepal is a severely
underdeveloped country. Throughout its history, Nepal has had little interaction with the outside
world. The lack of political stability throughout its history accounts for many of the reasons of why
Nepal is the way it is. As a landlocked country, Nepal has had little interaction with the outside world
for most of its history. Unlike most developing countries, Nepal was never colonized. It is for the most
part still considered a traditional society and has not experienced much modernization. Nepal s history
for the most part has been able to play out with little interference. While it is still underdeveloped,
some theorists believe that the lack of outside interference will greatly benefit Nepal in the long term.
While Nepal has recently experienced vast political changes, it used to be a monarchy. In 1846, the
Ranas, the ruling dynasty, cut the country off from the outside world. In 1950, Anti Rana forces allied
with the monarch and the end of the Rana rule was brought about in 1951, allowing the sovereignty of
the crown to be restored. Nepal joined the United Nations in 1955 looking to be connected to the
outside world for the first time in almost a century. Nepal implemented a multi party constitution in
1959. King Mahendra, who took control of the throne in

Essay on Examining a Business Failure
Examining a Business Failure: Tyco International Ltd. ®
LDR 531
August 23, 2010
Examining a Business Failure: Tyco International Ltd. ® Many have heard the proverb, A chain is
only as strong as its weakest link. This can be directly applied to business organizations through
analysis of the three strongest and/or weakest links: managers, leaders and the organizational
structure. These three areas provide the central core to any organization and are often linked to
dramatic failures and consequences when weaknesses arise. In this paper, the student will discuss the
2002 failure of Tyco International Ltd. ® (Tyco) in which the Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) filed a lawsuit claiming fraud, reporting violations, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While this was only one of many claims held by the SEC, it shows the fraudulent nature of the
accusations. Additionally, the SEC pursued harsh consequences for the crimes as a means to offer
restitution to all investors damaged by the executive s actions (U.S. Securities and Exchange
Commission, 2010).
Managers and Leaders While it is difficult to offer a specific definition of a manager and leader, the
type of control used to manage/persuade employees can offer a clear distinction. A manager often uses
a bureaucratic, authoritative style, and a leader most often relies on charisma and influence to achieve
goals. Neither style is better than the other; however, one may achieve greater results dependent upon
the situation. According to Yuki, within the management atmosphere, many decision processes are
disorderly and political (2006, p. 26). In the case with Tyco, many actions completed by the
accounting department were highly political, being based upon information directly from the CEO.
During the legal investigation, the SEC found that no employees (with the exception of those
specifically named in the lawsuit) were found in violation of any law. The SEC concluded that

A Critique on the 1994 Rwanda Genocide
Critique/ Discussion
Despite receiving considerable among of funds and international attention since the genocide in 1994
Rwanda is having a bad experience of political governance. According to a report by the World Bank,
around 10 percent of the population which is more than 850,000 people was killed during the deadly
conflicts and about 3 million escaped to neighboring countries. Thousands of children were left with
the responsibility of caring for more than 90,000 households, which left a large number of widow and
orphans (Peyntjens 2010). Also, thousands cases of extensive rape which led to HIV/AIDS and spread
these daises throughout the country. Furthermore, there hundred and thousands victims suffering
trauma of rape and violent acts and they were died after months of being in trauma and some even
killed themselves. On the other hand, Rwanda can still feel the bad economic effects of those deadly
conflicts (Panic 2010).
This paper described the seizure of power and the merging of hegemony by a particular group of
Rwandans who came from abroad. Their social base was, and remains, very narrow till the end. The
brutal regime used certain strategies through repression, terror, and extreme violence elimination of
countervailing voices, both political and social to achieve their goals. The government used excessive
military as a force and mechanism of transformation both domestically and in the region. As a result, it

Study of the Influence of Teacher Effectiveness
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the study
As a teacher in the secondary school system in Nigeria for many years, experience has shown that,
there are two categories of teachers the good or effective teachers, and the bad or ineffective teachers
observable from among teachers in the school system.
The effective teachers are perceived to be fully equipped naturally and professionally to lead their
students to success in competitive standardized tests, as well as inculcate in them, values that would
make them exhibit behaviours that are generally desirable and acceptable.
On the other hand, the ineffective teachers do not care about the success of their students in
examinations, and, in some cases, students who pass through such teachers, ... Show more content on

This behaviour has the tendency of reducing productivity and efficiency on the part of the teachers.
These ill behaved teachers as they may be described may tend to produce their types from among the
students, since children tend to emulate adults they see as their models. In the fore going descriptions
of teachers in the school system, it is evident that, there exists two categories of teachers, but what
attributes or characteristics define the effective and ineffective teachers?
Highet (1977), in identifying the kinds of teachers, said that, there are good or effective teachers, and
bad or ineffective teachers, and amateur teachers who are neither good enough nor too bad in teaching
activities. In this study, the researcher categorized teachers into two, because whatever that is not
good, in definitely, bad. Denigrating the bad teachers, Highet (1977), said that bad teaching wastes a
great deal of effort, and spoils many lives which might have been full of energy and happiness. Giving
support for the existence of effective and ineffective teachers in the school system, Vernon cited in
Gammage (1971), said that most of those in the teaching profession who are well adjusted are
somewhat extroverted, but many other personality types do excellent work and that there are certainly,
large number of misfits. The researcher, through a wide range of consultation in various literatures,
has firmly established the

The large format movie system gives customers unique visual and audio movie watching experience
that cannot be found in conventional movie theaters. IMAX is also differentiated by its library of films
and locations. IMAX located itself in institutional environment and commercial multiplexes to target

IMAX is achieving economies of scale, the more movies released in IMAX format, the more the
IMAX system installed are utilized. IMAX is also updating their technologies and making
improvement to lower the costs of operations, therefore the learning curve cost advantages act as a
barrier to entry. The barrier to enter this industry is high.
Threats of substitutes
Live plays, sport events, TV programs (big screen TV, cable, and satellite), the internet, DVD, home
theater projection and sound system are all alternatives of IMAX movie for consumers to entertain
themselves in a different way. These substitutes also prevent IMAX from raising the ticket price. The
threats of substitutes are high.
Suppliers
The suppliers are vendors who provide the critical elements involved in IMAX s projectors and
camera systems, film making talents (actors, post production workers), other studios (Hollywood,
Disney, SKG DreamWorks etc.), and movie distributers (theater chain). The suppliers power is low
because by releasing movies in IMAX format and opening more IMAX screens will increase the box
office revenue for all the parties involved. IMAX does not pay top stars to make movies. They pay the
actors whose median salary is $17 per hour. IMAX has most its post production work done by its
wholly owned subsidiary. IMAX purchases its equipment components from vendors with

The Nature Of Free Will Essay
1 Introduction
Are we free? All of us have a clear sense that we are free. We believe that our decisions are wholly our
own, a result of our own reasoning and analysis. According to David Hume, the question of the nature
of free will is the most contentious question of metaphysics. If Hume is correct, understanding of free
will is a complex task indeed. At best to say that an agent has free will is to say that the agent has the
ability and power to choose his or her course of action without constraint.
What is so important about whether or not an agent has free will? Perhaps because free will is related
to freedom of action and moral responsibility. If actions are a result of rational analysis, then we see
that free action depends on free will. At best to say that an agent acted freely is to say that the agent
successfully carried out a free choice. Different philosophers have offered similar accounts of
freedom. Thomas Hobbes said A free agent is he that can do as he will, and forbear as he will, and that
liberty is the absence of external impediments. In An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding,
David Hume offered power of acting or of not acting, according to the determination of the will; that
is, if we choose to remain at rest, we may; if we choose to move, we also may. Now this hypothetical
liberty is universally allowed to belong to everyone, who is not a prisoner and in chains.
Nevertheless, one can argue that this methodology fails to address the distinction

Australia s Legislations To Fight Against Terrorism
Countries around the world have developed their own legislations to fight terrorists. Fighting terrorists
depends on two things, the laws amended in the country. Australia has always been a main factor in
fighting terrorism internationally, after witnessing a number of modern terrorism act (Healey, 2011).
Australia has also put some laws to prevent terrorists from terrorizing Australia (Healey, 2011).
Although Australia have put laws to fight terrorism but it depends on the severity of the response to
the assaults. Australia follows the UK s system of respondents against terrorists, which includes five
levels: low, moderate, substantial, severe and critical (Bergin, 2014).
Australian government has amended a number of laws to keep its country safe from future terrorist
attacks for it witnessed a number of attacks throughout history. Australia has suffered a number of
terrorist assaults, from the bombing of Sydney Hilton in 1978 to the bombing of Bali in 2002 (Healey,

Descriptive Essay On A Game At A Volleyball Game
Michigan Tech Volleyball Game
The ball whipped through the air, echoing through the gym like the snap from a leather whip. Lauren,
our libero, had served. I glanced at the flashing scoreboard and winced at the score: 21 23. The other
team had received the ball and were ready to set their outside hitter. Their hitter made a lightning fast
approach and the ball spun through the air over to our side, aimed right at me.
This was my first volleyball camp at Michigan Tech University this summer and I was ready. Coaches
sorted us into teams, taught us some intermediate skills revolving around the technique of the game,
and scrimmaging from time to time. My team leader was Ali Gerring, a recent graduate from
Kingsford. We did bump set spike drills and six different rotations to get ready for our big scrimmage
the next day. You could see the sweat glistening on our faces, and smell the hard determination to
improve. You could hear players call for the ball at every court yelling, Mine, mine mine!
At every practice there were different stations specializing in hitting (spiking), digging (bumping), and
setting. We peppered with partners at some stations and practiced serving at others. Our forearms were
turning scarlet from digging so many balls and our necks started to ache after craning our necks so
many times setting the ball. We had to pick which position we wanted to play in the game and I picked
outside hitter (player that spikes) because I wanted to be the one that would

The Importance Of Being A Self Directed By Jeff Cobb
There are many aspects to being a self directed, intrinsically motivated, and active learner. From our
reading assignments it has become plain that the most important aspect is taking initiative. This means
being someone who doesn t have to be told to learn this or that, but will take the first steps down the
road of learning. Taking the initiative to learn is core to every other aspect, whether we talk about the
15 Ways of the Successful Self Directed Learner by Jeff Cobb, or come up with our own definitions
and reflections on being an active learner.
Instead of going through the list from our reading assignments, I m going to wing this a bit, and touch
upon the more important aspects which I consider essential to being an active learner. Apart from
being someone who takes initiative with learning, the next most important aspect would be someone
who is independent, as a truly successful active learner is someone who can ask the questions and find
the answers on their own. I think being curious is equally important, since from this curiosity will
spring the desire to learn, as the curious person asks questions and finds answers to challenges and
problems. As Jeff Cobb says it, The proverbial bottom line: the successful self directed learner simply
likes to learn. (Cobb, 2013)
All of these things discuss the qualities of the successful active learner, but there are other aspects that
are equally important, since without the right behaviors a person will never take the

Not only did this move reorganize three different organizations into one, but it also established a more
unified system. This in turn helped communication and response to threats. With a single organization,
instead of two or three, it helped keep the focus on the primary goal; there would be no more varying
paths. It was basically unified under one leadership. Another reason that this was done was because
the Customs and Border Protection was in need of a serious overhaul. Originally the Immigration and
Naturalization Service received its roots after the American Civil war. Many states began passing their
own laws regarding immigration, the federal government saw this as a problem and passed the
Immigration Act of 1891, making immigration a federal manner.(2010, Immigration and
Naturalization Service. Retrieved from

early 1900 s immigration laws started becoming stricter to help protect U.S. citizens and their wages.
Laws in 1921 and 1924 began limiting the amount of Immigrants entering the U.S. based on quotas. In
1940, President Roosevelt transferred the INS to the department of Justice where it would remain for
the next forty three years. (2010, Immigration and Naturalization Service. Retrieved from

Hypothesis For The Egg In Cranberry Juice
In biology class, we wondered what evidence we could gather through shell less eggs so we could
show osmosis and diffusion through the egg inner membranes. My hypothesis for the egg in cranberry
juice was that the color would change to red. My hypothesis for the egg in La Croix would be that the
texture would become rougher and it would become smaller. My hypothesis for the egg in syrup was
that the color would become brown and the egg would become larger. I believe with the knowledge I
had at the time, that my hypotheses were not convincing because I did not explain why I thought the
eggs were going to change, I just stated it. In a controlled experiment, the independent variable is the
only variable that can be adjusted, while the dependent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We put our egg into syrup because we wanted to see if the color would change to brown and if the size
would change. The egg started out as whitish or light orange and changed to brown with bits of white.
It changed color because the syrup was trying to diffuse into the egg. However, because the egg had
bits of white, the color only stained the membrane. This means that the diffusion did not fully occur.
The egg initially weighed 88.3g but after the experiment, it had decreased to 48.39g. I believe this
happened because the egg was hypertonic, and so the size decreased. The texture of the egg started out
as squishy and slightly chalky and ended as being deflated and having a smooth membrane. The
texture most likely changed because the texture of the syrup diffused into it and changed it. The egg
deflated most likely because the egg was hypertonic. These changes show that the egg membrane is
selectively permeable because it let the egg albumen out of the egg, but the syrup was only able to
color the egg and not diffuse into the egg completely. I believe that passive transport happened, but
precisely diffusion. If I could do the lab just on these changes, I would keep the egg in the syrup for
longer until it stopped deflating and then find out

Human Life In Thornton Wilder s Play Our Town
Thornton Wilder s play, Our Town, outlines the lives of two families realistically from 1901 to 1913.
Multiple themes are presented through the lives of these families in three separate acts: Daily Life ,
Love and Marriage , and Death and Eternity . Although each act entails different commonly faced
problems and themes, the play does not lack a central, universal theme. Each act contributes to a main
theme about human life that, even after 81 years, is still relevant to society today. The main theme of
the play, Our Town, is that human life is repetitive and temporary. The repetition of daily life can
mainly be found in Acts I and II, where the Gibbes, Webbs, and other characters continually do the
same thing everyday. The first act, Daily Life , begins with Howie Newsome, deliverin the milk
(Wilder 10) to the Webb and Gibbs families. Similarly to Act I, the second act, Love and Marriage ,
starts with Howie Newsome delivering the milk (49). The beginnings of the acts presents little change
between the mornings of three years. Therefore, Wilder has symbolized repetition in a human s life
through the characters in Our Town. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

until it is gone. The theme of human life being temporary is also shown in Acts I and II. Both acts
begin similarly and show the repetitive nature of human life but also show life being temporary. For
example, the beginning act starts with the paper boy, Joe Crowell, Jr., delivering the newspaper, but in

State Apparatuses By Antonio Gramsci
I have been for the most part skeptical about whether Louis Althusser s essay on state apparatuses
accomplishes anything not previously explained in more humanistic and less functionalist terms by
Antonio Gramsci. Indeed, although there appears to be a clear divergence between the two insofar as
Gramsci associates ideological work with civil society whereas Althusser locates it in the state, even
this distinction is not as stark in light of certain passages in Selections from the Prison Notebooks.
Gramsci s historically specific analysis of domination through hegemony simply seemed to me to
constitute a social theory that better accounts for contingency, agency, and change. After further
reflection, however, it also clear to me that we can improve upon it by incorporating Althusser s useful
references to materiality and production.
Before explaining Althusser s contribution to theories of ideology and the state, it is necessary to
review Gramsci s own writings on the topic, particularly since his definition of the state and its
functions varies a great deal within his fragmented notes from 1929 1936. The particular conception
with which Gramsci is perhaps most associated is found in State and Civil Society the dichotomous
title of which is highly suggestive in which he describes the state as the coercive and punitive force of
juridical regulation of a country. It was Gramsci s attention to ideological struggles in the voluntary
associations and private institutions of

The Cultural Aspects Of Culture
Culture is a group of characteristics such as customs, beliefs and attitudes that groups of people share
within a certain geographic area. Different geographic locations have different norms and cultures that
are followed by the people that live in that specific location. That being said, religion can be
indigenous or non indigenous. Indigenous religions are religions that are native to a place. Some good
examples of indigenous religions are Shintoism, which is native to Japan, Christianity which,
originated in Rome and Islam, which is believed to be originated in Mecca. A couple examples of non
indigenous religion are Voodoo and New Age. Religions originate when people that live close get
together share their belief systems and can distinguish right from wrong. When a religion is created
the cultural rules get included in the religious rules. For example, in Buddhism, nuns have way more
rules that have to be followed than the priests. Buddhism is native to India, and women in India are
ruled and taken care of by the men. Primarily, the men in this country have power over the women and
it is believed that while creating these rules the culture and norms were incorporated into it. Although,
when studying religions it is good to have the origination, it can be harmful as well. Studying religions
can be biased because the people are so drawn to the origin, that they might focus more on the cultural
aspects. For example, some Brahmins that practice Hinduism do not eat meat but

Experiential Marketing
FOX, Chantz Christian Creating and Sustaining Customers Through Experiential Marketing
Introduction Marketing is an evolutionary and fluid process that needs to be continually adapted to
consumers in order to keep them coming back time and time again. With increased competition and
volatility on a global scale companies must strive to differentiate themselves from competitors.
Managers should be aware that consumers are changing at an increasing rate as they become more
informed, and should shift from a product and service orientation to a consumer focused orientation.
Simply focusing on an exchange is no longer applicable in today s economy. Pine and Gilmore (1998,

The efficiency and cost effectiveness of staging internet experiences will allow marketers to get
instantaneous and up to date information, as well as educate, demonstrate, or provoke reactions from
their target audience while also building lasting relationships (Smilansky, 2009, p. 126) Hedonic and
Utilitarian Responses In order to create and maintain lasting relationships marketers and stimulate
consumer interest marketers must first identify and adapt to consumer preferences and behaviors. Two
distinctive behaviors of consumption can be identified as hedonic and utilitarian responses. Hedonic
responses are subjective and personal (Babin, Darden, and Griffin, 1994, p. 646), and describe as,
those facets of consumer behavior that relate to the multi sensory, fantasy, and emotive aspects of one
s experience with products (Hirschman and Holbrook, 1982, p. 92). In addition, values of hedonic
consumption tend to have a fun and playfulness (Holbrook and Hirschman, 1982 cited in Babin,
Darden, and Griffin, 1994, p. 646) where consumers receive enjoyment from the leisurely activity of
shopping (Bäckström, 2010) whether they make an actual purchase or just casually browsing the
newest fashion at the local department store. Utilitarian consumption values on the other hand can be
expressed as purchasing products in a deliberant and efficient manner and described by consumers as

Cause and Effect of Teen Pregnancy
Cause and effect of teen pregnancy
Teenagers suffering health problems is high
Many teenagers will try to hide the pregnancy from their parents and teachers, in doing this they do
not get the initial medical attention required during the first months of pregnancy. It is estimated that
33% of teenage pregnancy fail to receive necessary prenatal care. The lack of prenatal care leads to
increased risk of anemia, miscarriage, and high blood pressure to the teenager. Many teenagers will
hide their pregnancy because of fear of being reprimanded by their parents or teachers. Teenage
pregnancy is also linked to immorality, and this can be a social stigma to the teenager. These effects
make the teenage try to hide their pregnancy, which results in lack of proper medical attention. The
children born to teenagers exhibit a low birth weight, and this is usually accompanied with other
health complications at their tender age. These complications make the mortality rate for these
children to be high.
Hiding their pregnancy and not been able to come out and inform their parents, teenagers result to

Foreign Relations With Russia Essay
Uniteds States foreign relations with Russia have been shaky even after the fall of the USSR in 1991,
most notably because Russian leaders have never been very supportive of the United States global
democratic influence. However, with the collapse of the Soviet economy, Russia realized that
democratic economic policies were probably the only path to a successful and thriving country. But
with recent U.S. intervention in Russian foreign policy over the annexation of Crimea and the unstable
Ukrainian conflicts, relations with Russia have become especially hostile. Therefore the U.S. should
take a look at the implications of losing stable relations with Russia (as it has in the past few years)
and instead strengthen these relations, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most importantly however, the U.S. should attempt to see Putin s side of the argument and try to
understand where he is coming from so that Russia no longer feels like it is being treated as a lesser
power when compared to the other more affluent Western nations. (Tsvetov, 58) Next we must look at
why Russians disregard U.S. aid and intervention, and how we can remedy ourselves in order to
promote better relations. First of all Russia desires to become a great superpower as it had been post
World War 2, however many Russians believe that U.S. intervention in their private foreign policy has
hindered Russia s growth locally as well as internationally. As a result, Russia has taken its own
measures to remedy this issue, starting with the unauthorized and unlawful annexation of Crimea.
(Tsvetov, 58) So the U.S. should make it clear that its intentions are not to overpower Russia when
interfering with its foreign policy, but rather to enforce international laws and keep the world safe
from Russian over empowerment. Additionally, the U.S. should not interfere beyond its boundaries as
Putin believes it has, an example being U.S. support for the Ukrainian protesters. (Tsvetov, 58) And
the U.S. must restore its integrity by pulling itself out of its support for instances such as the colour

Comparison Of King Lear And Gloucester Essay
Shakespeare uses subplots to dramatize the action of the play and give spark on the contrast for the
themes in King Lear. Sub plots usually improve the effect of dramatic irony and suspense. The latter,
which is used in King Lear, gives us the understanding of the emotions of the characters in the play.
This follows the parallelism between Gloucester and King Lear.
In King Lear, the subplot of Gloucester corresponds to the major plot of King Lear. Both fathers have
their own loyal legitimate child and their evil and disloyal child. They are both honourable men, who
have children that return to them in their time of need. Gloucester and Lear are both tormented, and

Gloucester s death in the subplot is a parallel to that of King Lear s in the main plot. Though
Gloucester does not have the tragic catastrophic death of King Lear. King Lear s anguish led him to
insanity while Gloucester is led to despair and attempts suicide. Before Gloucester s attempt at
suicide, he realizes that he has wronged Edgar and condemns his blindness of Edmund s plans.
My father, poorly led? World, world, O world! But that thy strange mutations make us hate thee, Life
would not yield to age. (Act 4 Scene 1 Pg. 207 lines 10 12) This parallels Lear s death as he also
condemns his daughter Cordelia. I have seen the day, with my good biting falchion I would have made
em skip. I am old now, And these same crosses spoil me. Who are you? Mine eyes are not o the best, I
ll tell you straight. (Act 5 Scene 3 pg. 317 lines 276 279) Both deaths run on the same train tracks, as
King Lear and Gloucester die as better and wiser men than they showed themselves at first.
Throughout the play, Shakespeare uses the contrast through other characters such as Cordelia and
Edgar, who hides in the beginning and then later reveal themselves to conquer and defeat evil forces.
Subplots do make the play better all around and make the audience want to know more and enjoy it.
Lear and Gloucester even are totally different people but live in a parallel world, they are

Strength of social networking sites
Social network sites (SNSs) such as such as Friendster, CyWorld, and MySpace allow individuals to
present themselves, articulate their social networks, and establish or maintain connections with others
(Ellison, 2007). These sites could be used for work related situation, romance, connecting with
individuals with shared interest, or creating a connection amongst college students. Facebook enables
its users to present themselves in an online profile, accumulate friends who can post comments on
each other s pages, and view each other s profiles (Ellison, 2007). Individuals can write on the wall of
friends, send private message, comment on posts, as well as chat via instant messaging. Much of the
early research on online communities assumed that individuals using these systems would be
connecting with others outside their pre existing social group or location, liberating them to form
communities around shared interests, as opposed to shared geography (Ellison, 2007). Psychosocial

Child Protective Service And Mental Health Problems Essay
Introduction Being able to cope within a family is very important. Family members can cause great
strain on each other, especially, when individuals of such family suffer from mental health problems
and disability. After reading Andrea s case study, it is very clear that this family has a lot going on. A
mother and father who are both unemployed as mom suffers from anxiety and depression, which have
led her to be hospitalized a few times due to attempting suicide and dad who is now 33 years old and
had an accident at the age of 14 which left him with only one good functioning hand. They raise a son
by the name of Vincent, who is now 9 years old, however, he is autistic and also suffers from chronic
asthma. Andrea has custody of Vincent furthermore, she is unable to care for him because of her
illness and with her many visits to the hospital which have caused her to become hospitalized. This
has left an impression on child protective service as they feel she is an unfit mother because she is
unable to control her illness. Even though Andrea loves her son dearly, she is aware that with her
conditions she might not be able to care for him, even though Vincent was so attached to her. Vincent
was eventually taken from her and place with The Department of Child Protection in order to ensure
his safety. One theory I believe can be useful within this case study is Family Systems Theory. This
theory helps families to understand the root of their problem rather than blaming the issue

They are still discovering who they are and who they want to be. If they drink, it could ruin their
whole future in one way or another. Teenagers should not be allowed to drink for they are not
experienced with driving and do not know how alcohol will affect them. Some say that since Europe
has a low drinking age, the U.S. should follow but the difference between the U.S. and European
drinking laws are that Europeans have a higher age for when teens can drive. Teens may be allowed to
drink at 14, 15, or even 16 but they are not allowed to get their license until they are 18, teens in
America can get their license at 16. If the drinking age was lowered to 18 that gives them only two

teens are thus much more likely to drive under the influence of alcohol if the drinking age were

Ethical Principles In Dr. Kemp s The Invisible Man
I will argue that Dr. Kemp and Griffin are very different by the ethical principles they are driven by. It

an extreme. Dr. Kemp, on the contrary, acts for the greater good of humanity with wisdom and
jurisprudence. The story of The Invisible Man displays the self destructive or triumphant outcomes of
acting on their respective ethical principles. One man s virtues vs. the other man s vices. It is quite

Factors That Affect Political Attitudes Of Voters
There is a wide range of factors that influenced people when they cast their secret votes on Election
Day. The main research question driven by our survey was to know the factors that shape political
attitudes of voters. One of the main political attitude that we are looking at in this research is party
affiliation. In order to figure this out, out survey has been grounded around three mains theories. The
three main theories that we tested in our survey was about the tendency of certain demographic group
to support particular parties, the influence of childhood environment on party identification and the
myth of independents voters. The first theory discussed had been discussed in the Chapter 7 Party
Coalition and Party Change shows how races, age, educational background and demographic location
have influence party coalitions. According to that theory, young, women, and racial minorities tend to
affiliate themselves with democrats whereas healthy white, evangelical white programs tend to
affiliate themselves with republicans. The second theory in the chapter 6 about Party identification
identifies how family, relative, and many others religious group influence party affiliation. According
to this theory, children tend to grow up and vote the way their parents do. Therefore, families have the
first and the most lasting influence on young people s developing political opinions. As this children

The Contribution Of Albert And Victoria s Popularity
At first Albert was not popular with the British public because he was a foreign prince; however that

also fascinated by science, the arts, technology, trade, and industry, and he was wholeheartedly

How Did Mudbrick Build The City Wall
City wall re emerged with the creation of poleis, seemingly, at first, more as a political statement
rather than as fortifications. According to Maher, a populace is more likely to comply with the
directives of an acting government so long as there is at least the promise granted of protection from
outsiders (Maher 20). Since a polis acted as a centralized urban area, walls were essential to not only
protect inhabitants, but also to legitimize government. Initially, mudbrick was the building material of
choice for building fortifications, since it was easy to obtain and it was significantly cheaper than
stone. A huge benefit of mudbrick was that unskilled workers could make a mudbrick circuit rapidly

So long as mudbrick was properly shielded from the elements, it seems to be a more suitable building
material than stone. One major issue with mudbrick, though, was its availability. Mudbrick could only
be created with a specific clay that had such a consistency that it would adhere to itself when water
was added. Also, a large amount of water was required to make mudbrick, and at some poleis, like
Zagora, water was not easily accessible (Maher 35). Stone then was used as a substitute, and in order
to increase strength stone was shaped to fit. Two styles of masonry emerged in lieu of mudbrick,
Lesbian and polygonal. Lesbian masonry is defined by its primary characteristic, the joints are curved
(Scranton 25). In order to ensure proper fit, mason had strips of lead at hand, with which they made
templates of the sides of each block when it had been set, so as to mark on the adjoining blocks the
lines on which they should be cut to fit properly (Scranton 27). Polygonal masonry, instead of cutting
curved lines into the stone, cut the edges of the stone straight, typically resulting in blocks with 5 or

Neoliberalism In Chile
The concept of neoliberalism has brought many changes both in the world of politics and economy

will try to explain comprehensively about what is neoliberalism is and how it practices or policy shape
the nature of domestic and global politics, especially Chile under Augusto Pinochet in 1973.
Neoliberalism or modern Liberalism (Walzenbach, 2016, p. 88) is the idea that society should be
shaped by the free market and that the economy should be deregulated and privatized. Thus, it is
project that the state must reduce its role and keep it to a bare minimum (only to create and preserve

The Tragedy And Horror Of The Joplin Tornado
It is my belief that the attachment of positive interpretations to the tragedy and horror of the Joplin
tornado, and the repetition of such themes through continuous narration, directly affected community
ethos. This, in turn, helped further select the features of the collective narrative shared with the nation
through national news. The national attention to Joplin, spurred those wanting to help in the wake of
such devastation and those in admiration of the community s own resilience to volunteer time and
resources to the recovery effort. Cast as an all American city in the Heartland of the nation, the
positive ethos and determination demonstrated by Joplin citizens transformed the community s
identity from a virtually unknown place in Missouri to a symbol of the nation, a transformation further
encouraged through the wording of public statements by President Obama and Governor Nixon as
well as featuring Joplin on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and other television shows. To the
nation, Joplin became a place amid an undifferentiated region, except to locals, known as fly over
states. Theoretical Implications Disasters are totalizing events, impacting and influencing every aspect

Bigger Than Life By Nicholas Ray
Nicholas Ray s Bigger Than Life is a story of an American family man who tries to have it all and
fails because of his addiction. In an effort to visually portray this, Ray largely abandons conventional
Cinemascope practices and tends to revert to the paradigms of the Academy ratio. Rather than using
Cinemascope to highlight spectacle, Ray films a small family melodrama. Instead of splitting the
screen into thirds and adjusting the mise en scène to visually fill up the screen, Ray uses close ups,
single person shots, and symmetry. He frequently divides the screen in two at the center, essentially
treating each side as an Academy ratio film. Since Ray focuses less on clotheslining actors, he is able
to bring the audience closer to understand the psychology of Ed Avery (and physcially closer to him
than most Cinemascope films would go). The sequence towards the end of film is of paramount
importance Ray takes the tension, anger, cruelty, and derangement that has been building throughout
the film and raises it to a high enough level that Ed is willing to kill his own son. To get this across,
Ray uses composition to show Ed as isolated, sinister, and dangerous. Two of the scenes in particular
from the sequence deviate from his regular techniques, as he stages the family in a single frame to
highlight the growing distance between them all. Throughout the film, Ray used close ups to show Ed
s mental state; in this sequence, Ray largely abandons that technique Ed s state of mind

Cause And Effects Of Prohibition
What would happen if one were to prohibit all alcohol production and consumption? Well, it happened
before, from the Prohibition movement. Prohibition dates back to the early days of America, when it
was still a colony. However, due to it being a mostly orthodox movement, it had not gained much
traction. Until, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Prohibition s popularity surged; most notably, in
1873 when a group of nuns and their followers sang and prayed in front of a drugstore in Hillsboro,
Ohio (Hill 10). This influx of support led to the passing of the 18th Amendment, the only Amendment
to ever be repealed. Whether the boost in popularity is due mostly to the increasing amount of
Christians, crime dramas, or immigration may never be known. Yet, the causes and laws of Prohibition
did play a significant role in the 1920s because they showed the influence of lobby groups socially and
federally, taught cautionary lessons about American law and policy, and it greatly influenced our
relations with other countries, specifically Canada.
Firstly, Prohibition prominently displayed the power and influence of a lobby group in social and
government spheres. For example, the Women s War can be attributed to the closing of over 25,000
drinking establishments (Hill 12). This shows the major effects that the ASL, Anti Saloon League, had
on the social perceptions on drinking; the establishments only closed because they were either visited
by large mobs of people or were suspecting they

  • 2. Modernism In The Great Gatsby Modernism and Realism reflected in Fitzgerald and Chopin American Realism and Modernism are reflected in the authors and works we read through the characters actions and the overall tones of each work. Both Chopin and Fitzgerald are celebrated authors, known for their groundbreaking works during their lifetime. Realism is a literary period where authors focused on making their stories and characters more realistic and organic, reflecting on real life experiences, while Modernism is a literary period where many authors reflected the disillusionment from the First World War in their works through the creation of a new modern hero and the build a self theme. A well known work of Chopin s, A Pair of Silk Stockings , is short, sweet, and touches on many ideas of Realism in its passages. The main character is Mrs. Sommers, a poor widow and hardworking mother, falls under the lure of $15 and slips from her harsh reality to indulge in the lavish life she once lived, [the money] gave her a feeling of importance such as she had not enjoyed for years . She longs for the freedom and carelessness of her younger years, before she had to be smart with every cent for the well being of her children and herself, but through her escape from reality and indulging in her desires, we see her drift away from the smart mother who would not carelessly throw money around to a woman who just wants to be free from the harsh reality of her life, even if it is just for a ... • 3. Nepal s Present Is Reflexive of Its History Nepal s present is reflective of its history. Within the past few years, the country has been in a state of disarray because its history has been fraught with political turmoil. As a whole, Nepal is a severely underdeveloped country. Throughout its history, Nepal has had little interaction with the outside world. The lack of political stability throughout its history accounts for many of the reasons of why Nepal is the way it is. As a landlocked country, Nepal has had little interaction with the outside world for most of its history. Unlike most developing countries, Nepal was never colonized. It is for the most part still considered a traditional society and has not experienced much modernization. Nepal s history for the most part has been able to play out with little interference. While it is still underdeveloped, some theorists believe that the lack of outside interference will greatly benefit Nepal in the long term. While Nepal has recently experienced vast political changes, it used to be a monarchy. In 1846, the Ranas, the ruling dynasty, cut the country off from the outside world. In 1950, Anti Rana forces allied with the monarch and the end of the Rana rule was brought about in 1951, allowing the sovereignty of the crown to be restored. Nepal joined the United Nations in 1955 looking to be connected to the outside world for the first time in almost a century. Nepal implemented a multi party constitution in 1959. Essay on Examining a Business Failure Examining a Business Failure: Tyco International Ltd. ® LDR 531 August 23, 2010 Examining a Business Failure: Tyco International Ltd. ® Many have heard the proverb, A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. This can be directly applied to business organizations through analysis of the three strongest and/or weakest links: managers, leaders and the organizational structure. These three areas provide the central core to any organization and are often linked to dramatic failures and consequences when weaknesses arise. In this paper, the student will discuss the 2002 failure of Tyco International Ltd. ® (Tyco) in which the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit claiming fraud, reporting violations, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While this was only one of many claims held by the SEC, it shows the fraudulent nature of the accusations. Additionally, the SEC pursued harsh consequences for the crimes as a means to offer restitution to all investors damaged by the executive s actions (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, 2010). Managers and Leaders While it is difficult to offer a specific definition of a manager and leader, the type of control used to manage/persuade employees can offer a clear distinction. A manager often uses a bureaucratic, authoritative style, and a leader most often relies on charisma and influence to achieve goals. Neither style is better than the other; however, one may achieve greater results dependent upon the situation. According to Yuki, within the management atmosphere, many decision processes are disorderly and political (2006, p. 26). In the case with Tyco, many actions completed by the accounting department were highly political, being based upon information directly from the CEO. During the legal investigation, the SEC found that no employees (with the exception of those specifically named in the lawsuit) were found in violation of any law. The SEC concluded that ... Study of the Influence of Teacher Effectiveness CHAPTER ONE 1.1 Background to the study As a teacher in the secondary school system in Nigeria for many years, experience has shown that, there are two categories of teachers the good or effective teachers, and the bad or ineffective teachers observable from among teachers in the school system. The effective teachers are perceived to be fully equipped naturally and professionally to lead their students to success in competitive standardized tests, as well as inculcate in them, values that would make them exhibit behaviours that are generally desirable and acceptable. In the fore going descriptions of teachers in the school system, it is evident that, there exists two categories of teachers, but what attributes or characteristics define the effective and ineffective teachers? Highet (1977), in identifying the kinds of teachers, said that, there are good or effective teachers, and bad or ineffective teachers, and amateur teachers who are neither good enough nor too bad in teaching activities. In this study, the researcher categorized teachers into two, because whatever that is not good, in definitely, bad. Denigrating the bad teachers, Highet (1977), said that bad teaching wastes a great deal of effort, and spoils many lives which might have been full of energy and happiness. Giving support for the existence of effective and ineffective teachers in the school system, Vernon cited in Gammage (1971), said that most of those in the teaching profession who are well adjusted are somewhat extroverted, but many other personality types do excellent work and that there are certainly, large number of misfits. • 9. The Nature Of Free Will Essay 1 Introduction Are we free? All of us have a clear sense that we are free. We believe that our decisions are wholly our own, a result of our own reasoning and analysis. According to David Hume, the question of the nature of free will is the most contentious question of metaphysics. If Hume is correct, understanding of free will is a complex task indeed. At best to say that an agent has free will is to say that the agent has the ability and power to choose his or her course of action without constraint. What is so important about whether or not an agent has free will? Perhaps because free will is related to freedom of action and moral responsibility. If actions are a result of rational analysis, then we see that free action depends on free will. At best to say that an agent acted freely is to say that the agent successfully carried out a free choice. Different philosophers have offered similar accounts of freedom. Thomas Hobbes said A free agent is he that can do as he will, and forbear as he will, and that liberty is the absence of external impediments. In An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, David Hume offered power of acting or of not acting, according to the determination of the will; that is, if we choose to remain at rest, we may; if we choose to move, we also may. Now this hypothetical liberty is universally allowed to belong to everyone, who is not a prisoner and in chains. Nevertheless, one can argue that this methodology fails to address the distinction ... Lauren, our libero, had served. I glanced at the flashing scoreboard and winced at the score: 21 23. The other team had received the ball and were ready to set their outside hitter. Their hitter made a lightning fast approach and the ball spun through the air over to our side, aimed right at me. This was my first volleyball camp at Michigan Tech University this summer and I was ready. Coaches sorted us into teams, taught us some intermediate skills revolving around the technique of the game, and scrimmaging from time to time. My team leader was Ali Gerring, a recent graduate from Kingsford. We did bump set spike drills and six different rotations to get ready for our big scrimmage the next day. You could see the sweat glistening on our faces, and smell the hard determination to improve. You could hear players call for the ball at every court yelling, Mine, mine mine! At every practice there were different stations specializing in hitting (spiking), digging (bumping), and setting. We peppered with partners at some stations and practiced serving at others. Our forearms were turning scarlet from digging so many balls and our necks started to ache after craning our necks so many times setting the ball. From our reading assignments it has become plain that the most important aspect is taking initiative. This means being someone who doesn t have to be told to learn this or that, but will take the first steps down the road of learning. Taking the initiative to learn is core to every other aspect, whether we talk about the 15 Ways of the Successful Self Directed Learner by Jeff Cobb, or come up with our own definitions and reflections on being an active learner. Instead of going through the list from our reading assignments, I m going to wing this a bit, and touch upon the more important aspects which I consider essential to being an active learner. Apart from being someone who takes initiative with learning, the next most important aspect would be someone who is independent, as a truly successful active learner is someone who can ask the questions and find the answers on their own. I think being curious is equally important, since from this curiosity will spring the desire to learn, as the curious person asks questions and finds answers to challenges and problems. As Jeff Cobb says it, The proverbial bottom line: the successful self directed learner simply likes to learn. (Cobb, 2013) All of these things discuss the qualities of the successful active learner, but there are other aspects that are equally important, since without the right behaviors a person will never take the ... Another reason that this was done was because the Customs and Border Protection was in need of a serious overhaul. Originally the Immigration and Naturalization Service received its roots after the American Civil war. We put our egg into syrup because we wanted to see if the color would change to brown and if the size would change. The egg started out as whitish or light orange and changed to brown with bits of white. It changed color because the syrup was trying to diffuse into the egg. However, because the egg had bits of white, the color only stained the membrane. This means that the diffusion did not fully occur. The egg initially weighed 88.3g but after the experiment, it had decreased to 48.39g. I believe this happened because the egg was hypertonic, and so the size decreased. The texture of the egg started out as squishy and slightly chalky and ended as being deflated and having a smooth membrane. The texture most likely changed because the texture of the syrup diffused into it and changed it. The egg deflated most likely because the egg was hypertonic. These changes show that the egg membrane is selectively permeable because it let the egg albumen out of the egg, but the syrup was only able to color the egg and not diffuse into the egg completely. I believe that passive transport happened, but precisely diffusion. If I could do the lab just on these changes, I would keep the egg in the syrup for longer until it stopped deflating and then find out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Human Life In Thornton Wilder s Play Our Town Thornton Wilder s play, Our Town, outlines the lives of two families realistically from 1901 to 1913. Multiple themes are presented through the lives of these families in three separate acts: Daily Life , Love and Marriage , and Death and Eternity . Although each act entails different commonly faced problems and themes, the play does not lack a central, universal theme. Each act contributes to a main theme about human life that, even after 81 years, is still relevant to society today. The main theme of the play, Our Town, is that human life is repetitive and temporary. The repetition of daily life can mainly be found in Acts I and II, where the Gibbes, Webbs, and other characters continually do the same thing everyday. The first act, Daily Life , begins with Howie Newsome, deliverin the milk (Wilder 10) to the Webb and Gibbs families. Similarly to Act I, the second act, Love and Marriage , starts with Howie Newsome delivering the milk (49). The beginnings of the acts presents little change between the mornings of three years. • 20. State Apparatuses By Antonio Gramsci I have been for the most part skeptical about whether Louis Althusser s essay on state apparatuses accomplishes anything not previously explained in more humanistic and less functionalist terms by Antonio Gramsci. Indeed, although there appears to be a clear divergence between the two insofar as Gramsci associates ideological work with civil society whereas Althusser locates it in the state, even this distinction is not as stark in light of certain passages in Selections from the Prison Notebooks. Gramsci s historically specific analysis of domination through hegemony simply seemed to me to constitute a social theory that better accounts for contingency, agency, and change. After further reflection, however, it also clear to me that we can improve upon it by incorporating Althusser s useful references to materiality and production. Before explaining Althusser s contribution to theories of ideology and the state, it is necessary to review Gramsci s own writings on the topic, particularly since his definition of the state and its functions varies a great deal within his fragmented notes from 1929 1936. The particular conception with which Gramsci is perhaps most associated is found in State and Civil Society the dichotomous title of which is highly suggestive in which he describes the state as the coercive and punitive force of juridical regulation of a country. Different geographic locations have different norms and cultures that are followed by the people that live in that specific location. That being said, religion can be indigenous or non indigenous. Indigenous religions are religions that are native to a place. Some good examples of indigenous religions are Shintoism, which is native to Japan, Christianity which, originated in Rome and Islam, which is believed to be originated in Mecca. A couple examples of non indigenous religion are Voodoo and New Age. Religions originate when people that live close get together share their belief systems and can distinguish right from wrong. When a religion is created the cultural rules get included in the religious rules. For example, in Buddhism, nuns have way more rules that have to be followed than the priests. Buddhism is native to India, and women in India are ruled and taken care of by the men. Primarily, the men in this country have power over the women and it is believed that while creating these rules the culture and norms were incorporated into it. Although, when studying religions it is good to have the origination, it can be harmful as well. Studying religions can be biased because the people are so drawn to the origin, that they might focus more on the cultural aspects. Two distinctive behaviors of consumption can be identified as hedonic and utilitarian responses. Hedonic responses are subjective and personal (Babin, Darden, and Griffin, 1994, p. 646), and describe as, those facets of consumer behavior that relate to the multi sensory, fantasy, and emotive aspects of one s experience with products (Hirschman and Holbrook, 1982, p. 92). However, with the collapse of the Soviet economy, Russia realized that democratic economic policies were probably the only path to a successful and thriving country. But with recent U.S. intervention in Russian foreign policy over the annexation of Crimea and the unstable Ukrainian conflicts, relations with Russia have become especially hostile. Therefore the U.S. should take a look at the implications of losing stable relations with Russia (as it has in the past few years) and instead strengthen these relations, to ... Most importantly however, the U.S. should attempt to see Putin s side of the argument and try to understand where he is coming from so that Russia no longer feels like it is being treated as a lesser power when compared to the other more affluent Western nations. (Tsvetov, 58) Next we must look at why Russians disregard U.S. aid and intervention, and how we can remedy ourselves in order to promote better relations. First of all Russia desires to become a great superpower as it had been post World War 2, however many Russians believe that U.S. intervention in their private foreign policy has hindered Russia s growth locally as well as internationally. As a result, Russia has taken its own measures to remedy this issue, starting with the unauthorized and unlawful annexation of Crimea. (Tsvetov, 58) So the U.S. should make it clear that its intentions are not to overpower Russia when interfering with its foreign policy, but rather to enforce international laws and keep the world safe from Russian over empowerment. Additionally, the U.S. should not interfere beyond its boundaries as Putin believes it has, an example being U.S. support for the Ukrainian protesters. • 27. Comparison Of King Lear And Gloucester Essay Shakespeare uses subplots to dramatize the action of the play and give spark on the contrast for the themes in King Lear. Sub plots usually improve the effect of dramatic irony and suspense. The latter, which is used in King Lear, gives us the understanding of the emotions of the characters in the play. This follows the parallelism between Gloucester and King Lear. In King Lear, the subplot of Gloucester corresponds to the major plot of King Lear. But that thy strange mutations make us hate thee, Life would not yield to age. (Act 4 Scene 1 Pg. 207 lines 10 12) This parallels Lear s death as he also condemns his daughter Cordelia. (Act 5 Scene 3 pg. 317 lines 276 279) Both deaths run on the same train tracks, as King Lear and Gloucester die as better and wiser men than they showed themselves at first. Throughout the play, Shakespeare uses the contrast through other characters such as Cordelia and Edgar, who hides in the beginning and then later reveal themselves to conquer and defeat evil forces. According to Maher, a populace is more likely to comply with the directives of an acting government so long as there is at least the promise granted of protection from outsiders (Maher 20). Since a polis acted as a centralized urban area, walls were essential to not only protect inhabitants, but also to legitimize government. Also, a large amount of water was required to make mudbrick, and at some poleis, like Zagora, water was not easily accessible (Maher 35). Stone then was used as a substitute, and in order to increase strength stone was shaped to fit. Two styles of masonry emerged in lieu of mudbrick, Lesbian and polygonal. Lesbian masonry is defined by its primary characteristic, the joints are curved (Scranton 25). In order to ensure proper fit, mason had strips of lead at hand, with which they made templates of the sides of each block when it had been set, so as to mark on the adjoining blocks the lines on which they should be cut to fit properly (Scranton 27). The Tragedy And Horror Of The Joplin Tornado It is my belief that the attachment of positive interpretations to the tragedy and horror of the Joplin tornado, and the repetition of such themes through continuous narration, directly affected community ethos. This, in turn, helped further select the features of the collective narrative shared with the nation through national news. The national attention to Joplin, spurred those wanting to help in the wake of such devastation and those in admiration of the community s own resilience to volunteer time and resources to the recovery effort. Cast as an all American city in the Heartland of the nation, the positive ethos and determination demonstrated by Joplin citizens transformed the community s identity from a virtually unknown place in Missouri to a symbol of the nation, a transformation further encouraged through the wording of public statements by President Obama and Governor Nixon as well as featuring Joplin on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and other television shows. • 42. Bigger Than Life By Nicholas Ray Nicholas Ray s Bigger Than Life is a story of an American family man who tries to have it all and fails because of his addiction. In an effort to visually portray this, Ray largely abandons conventional Cinemascope practices and tends to revert to the paradigms of the Academy ratio. Rather than using Cinemascope to highlight spectacle, Ray films a small family melodrama. Instead of splitting the screen into thirds and adjusting the mise en scène to visually fill up the screen, Ray uses close ups, single person shots, and symmetry. He frequently divides the screen in two at the center, essentially treating each side as an Academy ratio film. Since Ray focuses less on clotheslining actors, he is able to bring the audience closer to understand the psychology of Ed Avery (and physcially closer to him than most Cinemascope films would go). The sequence towards the end of film is of paramount importance Ray takes the tension, anger, cruelty, and derangement that has been building throughout the film and raises it to a high enough level that Ed is willing to kill his own son. To get this across, Ray uses composition to show Ed as isolated, sinister, and dangerous. Two of the scenes in particular from the sequence deviate from his regular techniques, as he stages the family in a single frame to highlight the growing distance between them all. Throughout the film, Ray used close ups to show Ed s mental state; in this sequence, Ray largely abandons that technique Ed s state of mind ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Cause And Effects Of Prohibition What would happen if one were to prohibit all alcohol production and consumption? Well, it happened before, from the Prohibition movement. Prohibition dates back to the early days of America, when it was still a colony. However, due to it being a mostly orthodox movement, it had not gained much traction. Until, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Prohibition s popularity surged; most notably, in 1873 when a group of nuns and their followers sang and prayed in front of a drugstore in Hillsboro, Ohio (Hill 10). This influx of support led to the passing of the 18th Amendment, the only Amendment to ever be repealed. Whether the boost in popularity is due mostly to the increasing amount of Christians, crime dramas, or immigration may never be known. Yet, the causes and laws of Prohibition did play a significant role in the 1920s because they showed the influence of lobby groups socially and federally, taught cautionary lessons about American law and policy, and it greatly influenced our relations with other countries, specifically Canada. Firstly, Prohibition prominently displayed the power and influence of a lobby group in social and government spheres. For example, the Women s War can be attributed to the closing of over 25,000 drinking establishments (Hill 12). This shows the major effects that the ASL, Anti Saloon League, had on the social perceptions on drinking; the establishments only closed because they were either visited by large mobs of people or were suspecting they ...
