The Numbers And Counting System In Ancient Egypt
Numbers and counting systems are used daily by everyone. Numerous civilizations throughout history
like Egypt, Babylonian, Maya and Africa developed a unique number system. They were commonly
used to communicate numbers in an everyday life. Since then counting has changed. A few of the
earlier systems had principles that survived and helped in some way, shape or form to create our
current Hindu Arabic numbering system. It has become widespread. Back in 3000 B.C, ancient Egypt
was using the number system to calculate areas of land, distribute money, and much more. The
Egyptian counting system consisted of hieroglyphs and pictorial signs. The graphic numbers can be of
a person, animal, or plant. The hieroglyphic numbers were a written form of the number system. It
used a decimal base approach. For all the powers of ten, there was a unique symbol. For example, the
number ten was represented as a upside down U , for the number a hundred thousand it was tadpole,
for a million it was represented by a man kneeling with his arms raised. When reading or writing the
number, it is written from right to left. It was written on temples, vases, and stone monuments. The
Egyptians used hieroglyphic numbers to advance in architectural achievements. Math was used to
make historical creations like tombs and pyramids. Greenwald and Thomley agree that the ancient
Egyptians were also aware of fractions, which were primarily written as unit fractions of the form 1⁄n,
such as 1⁄2or 1⁄4...

Introduction Annette Lareau is the author of Unequal Childhoods, she study African Americans and
white families to understand the impact of how social class makes a difference in family life,
specifically the children lives. This book talks about how the social class will determine how children
will use their cultivate skills in the future. Through her research, she finds the differences in the
parenting styles of twelves families, which all the kids was in the third grade. While reading the book
Lareau found that middle class parents practice concerted cultivation, and working class and poor
parents practice accomplishment of natural growth.
Summary
Reading this book shows how social class status of a child s parents matters. One of the big issues was
how it matter in school success. Chapter 1 talks about the difference between Concerted Cultivation
and the Accomplishment of Natural Growth. Concerted Cultivation is a middle class child rearing
technique they use on a child to improve their child talents. The middle class parents use this
technique to schedule activities for their child. Parents also practice language with their child. Middle
class parents let their child find agreement with them. Lareau states that middle class parents also
takes more consideration with authorities that are associated with their children. For example, when a
parent is not comfortable with the teacher s way of teaching, middle class parents would directly speak

Romare Bearden s The Train
Romare Bearden, an African American artist, was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1911. As a
child he moved to New York City where his parents were both very involved in the African American
community and the Harlem Renaissance. Bearden attended Lincoln University and then later
transferred to Boston University. He then proceeded with school and began attending New York
University, where he focused more on his art. Later on, Bearden joined the Art Students League where
he studied under George Grosz. Grosz was a German artist who was famous for his paintings and
drawings. However, Grosz also did collage work that later inspired Bearden to begin creating collage
pieces. Although Bearden worked with many different medias, including oils and water color, he was
most known for his collages. In his collages, Bearden would depict African American life. Bearden
would use different pieces from magazines and combine them together with other media to create a
piece that demonstrated a scene of daily African American life. Through his collages, Bearden became

The Legend of Zelda
The Legend of Zelda(NES) is a high fantasy action adventure video game series created by Japanese
game designers Takashi Tezuka and Shigeru Miyamoto. It was developed and published by Nintendo.
The main platforms associated with this game include: Game boy, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii, and
the Nintendo Entertainment System. The Legend of Zelda plots centers on a boy named Link whose
goal is to collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom in order to rescue Princess Zelda from
the enemy, Ganon. Over time, players tend to become quite skilled if they play The Legend of Zelda
often causing the competition aspect of it to grow. Thus, gamers found a new way of ... Show more

In the Legend of Zelda, the sword less speed running game completely transformed the game. Sword
less speed running is played by gamers who yearn for a challenge it s a normal run, except that you
can t use a sword throughout the game until you encounter, Gannon. Gannon cannot be killed without
a sword, unlike the other enemies in the game who can be killed using a bomb, candles, wands, and
boomerangs. This is the fastest strategy to complete the game, because you are not focused in killing
the enemies, but rather on dashing through levels as fast as possible. The sword less community defied
the instructions of the developers, because the sword was intended to be used throughout the game.
This community believed that the normal rules were too easy and as a result made their own rules to
enhance the challenge and fun aspects of the game. Nevertheless, this community exploited the game
because they found a way to surpass this rule. Yes, the primary objective is to find a weapon but that
necessarily doesn t have to be the sword, this community learned that they can utilize candles, bombs,
and arrows to use against enemies. Players who perform speed runs often record their attempts, these
recordings entertain others, verify the time achieved. To accomplish a high level of play, speed runners

Pm Chrétian Essay
The first of these changes was introduced in 1969 and stated that English and French were to be used
throughout federal board/administration, which signified the start of language rights in Canada. Later
on, in 1982, the Constitution Act was brought in and clearly addressed the importance of language
rights in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Today, sections 16 22 of the Charter states that English
and French both have equal status, rights, and privileges; section 23 guarantees minority rights to
children in Quebec who speak English and French speaking children in the rest of Canada. While
these new bills were being introduced, PM Chrétian was also working studiously to persuade Quebec
to stay as part of Canada. Chrétian enacted a multitude of acts ... Show more content on

Though the separatist movements came very close to achieving their goal, the steady actions of PM
Chrétian show a change in attitude towards French Canadians in within the country. The fact that
Chrétian managed to succeed in keeping Quebec from separating further proves that the perspective of
cultural differences in Canada started to develop for the better. The language rights within Canada add
depth to the sincere maturity and growth that Canada has experienced in the years after WWII. Some
direct impacts were the immediate enactments of French policies within the federal government, and
indirectly the language rights reduced tension within all of Canada and mainly Quebec. Over the
years, language rights have helped the country learn to blend itself back into a bilingual nation of
acceptance and diversity. Canada, during the years after WWII, managed to stop the cultural bond
between the French and the English from further deteriorating and helped to repair previous bruises by
accepting Quebec s ideas and beliefs, by enacting language rights, and through Chrétian s active
attendance to maintaining the balance between French and English

Reaction Paper On Superstition
One of the most famous players, Michael Jordan, wears his college team s shorts underneath his Bulls
uniform because he believes that it brings him good luck. He even got 6 NBA championships, which
is proof that his superstition worked. Based on Dr. Stuart Vyse, the professor of Psychology at
Connecticut College. Who is also a science writer and the author of Believing in Magic: The
Psychology of Superstition and The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking: How Irrational Beliefs Keep Us
Happy, Healthy, and Sane. Defined the word superstition, A superstition is a belief or behavior that s
inconsistent with conventional science and attributes functional mental properties into non mental
phenomenon. (L. 39 to 42) In other words, a superstition is doing something to get a better outcome.
To start off, superstitions can make us feel like we are controlling our outcomes and that we are in
control of the situations, that we have no control over. They re maintained in part by a phenomenon
psychologists call the illusions of control. In certain circumstances, if you perform some action that
can t possibly affect the outcome in any real sense, you have the feeling that you have control and that
feels good better than just sitting and waiting. (L. 71 to 76) To simplify, superstitions help our brains
relax and increase the chances of getting a desired outcome. As a fact, the illusionary feeling of
control can strengthen the actual control we have over a situation.
To add on, one of the best

A standout amongst the most interesting contentions for the presence of an all impeccable God is the
ontological contention. While there are a few distinct renditions of the contention, all indicate to

on this general line of contention, it is an essential truth that such a being exists; and this being is the
Divine force of conventional Western belief in higher powers. This article clarifies and assesses great

The Roots Of Evil By Sharon Begley
Natural Devils Are humans created evil or do they develop evil habits? Even though all humans have
different personalities, good or sinful, we all have some type of evil in us. Some people are exposed to
evil in their early childhoods, therefore, if they acclimatize an evil personality as they become more
mature. This causes excessive cycle of humans being created evil if they are raised or treated cruelly
as a child. In result, they are more likely to raise and treat their children cruelly.
Children who are treated with cruelty at a young age affects how they treat others for the rest of their
lives. In The Roots of Evil by Sharon Begley, Begley states that if a child suffers extreme neglect or
cruelty, especially from a trusted friend or beloved relative, the results often shame and ... Show more

For example, in The Book of Genesis , Adam and Eve were created to do well, instead they did
commit evil doings by disobeying God s commands. The Book of Genesis says, And when the woman
saw the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make
one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he
did eat ( Kings James Version, Genesis 3:06). This proves that both Adam and Eve disobeyed God s
commands and were subject to being influenced by evil and wrong doings. Adam and Eve had great
guidance during their childhood which resulted in them knowing the difference between good and
evil. In The Book of Genesis God says, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and
evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also the tree of life, and eat, and live forever (Kings
James Version, Genesis 3:22). Now since man knows the difference between right and wrong, man is
less likely to commit wrong doings. The way humans are treated in their early childhood determines

Commercial Recuperation
Essentially what Hebdige is saying with his statement is that eventually a subcultures generic
trademarks will cross over into the mainstream. This will in tern render the original intentions of
subversion diluted pastiches of there former representations.
The validity of this statement is interesting in two ways. Firstly are subcultures subversive qualities
diluted through popularisation? And secondly and perhaps more importantly in terms of more
contemporary subcultural representations; how valid is the statement that what might be considered
subcultures are actually subversive in terms of attempted displacement of a dominant ideology.
It is these two areas with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But more than this was the relevant timing of the punk movement and subsequently, why it is so
important as an example within this discussion. The high unemployment rates and the economic
uncertainly present throughout Britain where largely to blame. As was the realisation that the
promised age of prosperity and utopia promised by the passing generation was never going to come to
the present one. As Polhemus puts it had Mclaren and Westwood not been around to toss a few sticks
of dynamite in the right direction an eruption would have occurred anyway (1993:90). Punk saw itself
as being in direct conflict with the established order it felt had betrayed a generation as John Fisk
highlights the main function of conflict sub cultural groups in his article The Popular Economy
The power domain in within which popular culture works is largely, but not exclusively, that of
semiotic power. One major articulation of this power is the struggle between homogenisation and
difference, or between consensus and conflict (Quoted in Storey, 1994:511)

The Arabs By David Lamb
People look through the eyes of the beholder when they regard others on this planet. It is no small
thing to forget everything that you have learned when meeting neighbors. Humans form preconceived
notions and in that, make choices and judgments on others. This is human nature, trying to figure out,
understand, what others are like so we can figure out how to relate to them. David Lamb s book The
Arabs is a learned look at the Arab culture through his eyes. David was a correspondent and has been
all over the world. As a reporter he has used his ability to merge with the cultures he reports on, to get
an overall picture that he presents. The Arabs, by David Lamb seems to try and give an accurate
presentation of the current world of the Arabs, but does reinforce some of the Western stereotypes in
his book. Lamb opens up about everything he sees, but what he cannot ignore is the Muslim religion
Islam. But the Arab remains always the Arab, a man held hostage by religion and culturally obsessed
with identity . This opening statement describes what a lot of Westerner s feel when it comes to talking
about the Arabs, and that is their faith is the Arab. The West has a hard time separating the two and
Lamb made no real try. In fact he explains the Arabs, through their faith, is the reason they actually do
many things. While Lamb is in Cairo he talks of how the city is in downturn. The phrase that sticks
out is the IBM Syndrome: inshallah (If God is willing), bokra

The Death Penalty Is Archaic and Immoral Essays
The death penalty is simply a modernized version of the Holy Bible s an eye for an eye, a tooth for a
tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot . Some argue that death is a necessary retribution for
murderous cases but is it effective morally? Revenge only glorifies violence, which is most definitely
not the message the world strives to display. The death penalty is a negative form of punishment and
insinuates a harsh reflection of society economically, politically, and socially. More than two thirds of
the world s countries formally oppose the death penalty, yet only fifteen out of the fifty United States
also object against the decree. What does this say about America? The United States represents

Dating back to the great words of Voltaire, It is better to risk saving a guilty person than to condemn
an innocent one. Over 130 people have been exculpated over false convictions since 1730 and the
numbers are still growing. When those thirty five United States prove that they can weed out the
guilty from the innocent confidently and without fail, maybe then they shall obtain the rationale
behind such a serious sanction. Yet as it stands so clumsily today, there is no assurance the death
penalty emits for the future. The death penalty is discriminatory against social and economical aspects
of society. Studies show that starting in 1977, most of those placed on death row are guilty of killing
white victims, and that African Americans enumerate one third of those executions. The most evident
factor determining execution is the ethnicity of the victim, which is extremely biased, even if racial
hostility is still inextricable to civilization. Not only is the death penalty prejudice, but it is also
exceedingly unfair economically. It s horribly expensive to run executions, and the money spent on
them could be put into more useful areas of interest and even help reduce rates of crime! Many
inmates cannot afford their own attorney, which leaves them with either no lawyer or poor
representation in court to defend them selves. The government has the authorization to ratify the death
penalty in any location inside America, even in states

Patriot Act Research Paper
It is a great pleasure to writing to you today. I am a citizen of the United States who attends Jamaica

reinstated. I understand that you might be wondering what a kid would understand about the Patriot
Act? Well, the thing is I understand plenty, as a matter of fact I agree with the Patriot Act to a certain
extent. I personally believe that the Patriot Act is a great concept that reinforces the protection of the
U.S from future terrorist attacks; however, some of its ideologies are slightly unjust. To my
understanding the Patriot Act is an act that emerged due to the horrific events of September 11th,

To my understanding the U.S Constitution is a number of principles that are supposed to be
acknowledged by the U.S. I do not believe that the Patriot Act is obeying these principles; as a matter
of fact it violates several amendments that are in the Constitution. According to the highlights of the
Patriot act, Allowing males of Middle Eastern or South Asian descent to be profiled as potential
terrorists, without probable cause... This allows any person who is of Middle Eastern or South Asian
decent that lives in the U.S to be acknowledged as a terrorist without any evidence at all. This is
completely inhumane and causes major problems in society. It mainly forces countless individuals of
the U.S to live in fear just because of their ethnic background. Now, this is just one of the many
problems of the Patriot Act. According to Eric Lichtblau, ... [The Government] demand records from
institutions like libraries and medical offices; and use a broad definition of terrorism in pursuing
suspects... This demonstrates the violation of the 4th amendment, which states, ... unreasonable
searches and seizures shall not be violated... (Amendments to the Constitution). Essentially, I do
understand and believe in the concept of the Patriot Act, however, I don t find it to be relevant if it is
mainly contradicting the U.S

Persuasive Extended School
Every school child looks forward to the lazy days of summer. But, why is the summer break so
essential for children? Relaxation, hanging out with friends, and endless amounts of free time are just
some reasons that make it an important rite of passage. Summer is an escape from the long school
days and the difficulties that arise with classes, homework, teachers, and peers. It also gives children a
break and time to recharge. Even though a long summer is nice, after the first month, children seem to
get bored, which could mean trouble. Although, there is nothing wrong with having fun, but months

When kids are bored, they look for something to do; sadly, it could mean mischief. Many children are
left unsupervised. Unfortunately, without supervision, they are put at a higher risk for using drugs or
alcohol. In fact, The National Survey on Health reports that there is a spike of first time users during
the months of June and July with December being a close third. They also engage in criminal activity
and dangerous behaviors. To help solve some juvenile delinquencies, the increased school year will
help with boredom by keeping students involved in school activities. With children becoming actively
involved for longer periods of time, they will have continuous structure and continuity, which is
important because children feel secure when their lives are predictable and are more likely to thrive.
With these daily expectations, students will meet their fullest potential. Therefore, an extended school
year will allow teachers to use class time more effectively. It will provide more time for students to
understand the material needed to be successful. It will also keep children busy, so they will not have
as much time to get into trouble. Our future depends on having intelligent, highly skilled, well
rounded students and citizens. By spending more time in the classroom it will give students an
opportunity to be successful in the global

searching for answers. Mrs. Kinter, in her desperation for justice, even goes as far as blaming Brody
(again a non islander) for her son s death rather than Mayor Vaughn who had been the real culprit
behind keeping the beaches open. She also enables two more examples of money and status driven
character development by offering a cash reward to anyone that can catch and kill the shark that
attacked her son. The character most obviously driven by financial gain is the fisherman Quint who at
the town meeting immediately following the attack on Alex Kintner explains that he will bring in the
shark for $10,000 instead of the $3,000 offered by Mrs. Kintner. Just as Mayor Vaughn seeks to
capitalize on the summertime and tourists, Quint is interested in his own financial gain rather than the
safety and wellbeing of the town. Dr. Hooper, as Mayor Vaughn points out, is also likely motivated by
money and stature related to finding and killing the monstrous shark. While trying to explain how big
and dangerous the shark really is, Mayor Vaughn criticizes Hooper for only wanting to get fame and
fortune by having his name in a National Geographic magazine. Although he insists that he is strictly
interested in the science behind the beast and protecting the people of Amity the act of discovery often
can harbor monetary and status related gain. As a researcher, Hooper fully

The Machine Stops, By E. M. Forster
The Machine Stops Literary Analysis In the short story The Machine Stops , E. M. Forster gives us an
insight into a world where technology is in every aspect of our lives. Vashti, the main character, must
struggle with her internal conflict and her relations hip with the technology in their world. In addition,
Forster uses the central theme to explain our dependence on technology. He also uses symbolism and
irony to contribute to this central idea. Through this futuristic setting, Forster develops the
fundamental concept of blind faith and its influence in our everyday lives and choices. Firstly, we are
introduced to Vashti as a woman about five feet high, with a face as white as fungus. Although in her
society she is the perfect size, in our terms her body type could be described as a blob . She would just
be pile of flesh and this is due to the lack movement in their lives. As a music lecturer, Vashti is a star
citizen in the eyes of her society; however, she nly lectures on already established views of Australian
music. Tending to go along with the norms of society, she is a conformist and has no problem firmly
believing in what is considered normal . For example, when Kuno declares that he would like to go
outside to the surface, she argues that it is contrary to the spirit of the age. This means that she solely
disapproves because it is against the ideas of the society. Being quite firm in her beliefs, she can be
fairly stubborn as well. If she makes up

The Effects Of Coral Bleaching On Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are unique and diverse underwater marine ecosystems that are found in many parts of the
world. Today these tropical reefs suffer a great deal of environmental stresses and are projected to
decline over the next century due to global warming. In Grottoli s article: The cumulative impact of
annual coral bleaching can turn some coral species winners into losers, she elaborates on the effects of
annual bleaching on three species of coral. Grottoli took three species of coral such as O. Faveolata,
P.asreoides P.divaricata and exposed the treatment groups to high temperatures of 31.5 °C for 15 days
while control groups remained at a normal temperature of 30.6 °C for the same amount of days. After
treatment species were then weighed and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such high level of energy reserve is a good indication of over all health and ability to acclimate to
harsh environments. An endosymbiont level is a measurement of other beneficial cells that lives on the
coral and forms a symbiotic relationship. Researchers recorded their results and then repeated the
experiment on the same corals a year later to see the effects of repeated high temperatures as a model
for annual coral bleaching as a result of global warming. Upon completion of the experiment Grottoli
and her team of researchers noted, yearly bleaching can dramatically alter the thermal tolerance of
corals (Grottoli s, 2014). Interestingly enough, while the majority of the species decreased in all
variables compared to controls, P.divaricata increased in energy reserves at about 20 45% higher than
controls after the second treatment. This increase in total energy reserve lead to a reduction in the
susceptibility to coral bleaching for that species. Thus, suggests that this species of coral can adapt to
high temperatures after the first event of bleaching occurs. Conversely, due to its low energy reserves
and its low potential to increase endosymbiont levels, P.asreoides is not likely acclimatize to higher
temperatures thus resulting in low abundance of the species in future

My Wishes In My Life
Every week would be something new: good or bad. As I was growing up at the end of the week my
grandparents, whom I had lived with, would make my sister, brother, and me milkshakes and we
would sit outside, look at stars, and talk about how our past week went. When it was occurring I had
just thought of the delicious milkshake that I would enjoy and the wishes I would make, but I had
recently realized that is what laid the foundation of who I am today.
Typically we would always make the milkshake first, with our choice of our favorite ice cream. Then
we would sit outside and look for shooting stars. When we found a shooting star we would make a
wish. My grandma always asked us about what we had wished for, without giving our exact wish we
would elaborate on what it was about. For my wishes, it would always be about my dad or my mom.
At the time my dad was in prison and before he had gone away he was the adult I was closest to. It
was always hard for me to talk about these wishes. I still have the memories of my dad first being sent
to jail and talking to him through a glass window; also taking a trip to the prison, where I learned that
you are not allowed to wear jeans with buttons while visiting someone, these in which I will forever
have engraved into my mind. On the other hand, we did not live with my mom because she was
working in order to provide a better life for us, her children.
No matter how hard the topic would be my grandma always tried to make it better. She

This means that each employee of the firm will do its best to help every person who meets and who
needs help. For example, the British newspaper THE INDEPENDENT explains that Tesco has
developed a new strategy to help its clients to overcome the global economic crisis. Tesco set up a
discount strategy to consumers struggling with the effects of the credit crunch . It creates the pay day
strategy (Evans S., 2009). In fact, it tries to simplify the lives of its customers and of its employees. In
conclusion, TESCO through its motto is trying to circulate an idea; a habit and a behavior to address
face each person; each employee is a sort of flagship of the enterprise; one person is enough to give a
bad image, in order that many people think that TESCO is a bad company, all of this is due because of
the word of mouth. TESCO has created a corporate culture in order that does not happen with another
surface manifestation.
Norms
Secondly in this second paragraph we talk about the norms of TESCO. In fact Mottoes have
concerned the way in which employees should act within the company in relation to clients and
colleagues. But the company also uses a strategy to boost its employees. In this case the Schein s
theory calls this a Norm. According to Schein Norms are expected modes of behaviour that are
accepted as the firm s ways of doing things, thereby providing guidance for employee behaviour . In a

Bp Oil Spill Letter
The purpose for my letter is to express my concerns of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill that
occurred April 20, 2010. The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill is the most recent oil spill and in all
probability the biggest catastrophic spill in the petroleum industry. The BP oil spill did not just affect
the company, it affected so much more; it had such a huge impact on the birds, whales, and the costal
habitats. Six years ago the Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico blew out, causing an explosion. Oil
leaked from the broken well from mid April to mid July, nearly three months, causing more than 200
million gallons of crude oil to swim out onto the gulf shoreline. In addition to the oil, almost 2 million
gallons of virulent dispersant was used. The chemical dispersant did not lessen the amount of oil, but
broke it into smaller particles, leaving the Gulf of Mexico as a dead zone. My concerns are the
animals that are continuing to be harmed by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The Deepwater
Horizon oil spill was a deadly accident that caused a lot of harm; it destroyed Gulf fishing and tourism
industries. The spill injured 17 people and 11 people lost their lives. The marine ... Show more content

I write this letter to BP on behalf of myself and many citizens who are concerned. I list plausible
solutions so another oil spill does not occur. Investigators say one of the causes for the spill was that it
failed to be properly inspected. A way we can easily avoid a second oil spill is by continually and
constantly inspecting correctly. Schedule regular audits. Technology has advanced so much that BP
can add leak detection devices to the wells. BP should avoid places where there are a lot of fishermen
or places like the Gulf of Mexico just because there is a lot of reef that can be harmed again. We all
need to bring about a change; it can save us money, we can save our marine wildlife, and together we

Essay Buried Child
It s amazing what a secret can do to a person. Keeping secrets among friends can be fun, or helpful
when you need to confide in someone you trust. Other secrets can do more harm than good. They can
fester inside you and cause endless pain. In amp;quot;Buried Child, amp;quot; this is the case. The
family is permanently altered by their secret, which becomes a growing moral cancer to them, leaving
each impotent in their own way.
The play takes place on Dodge s farm. About thirty years ago, the farm was fertile and prosperous.
Dodge and Halie didn t have a wonderful marriage, however. Things took a turn for the worse when

seems incapable of even adult reasoning.
There is a major difference in the effect this impotence has on Bradley and Tilden. While Bradley
denies the truth, telling Tilden he doesn t know, he wasn t born yet, Tilden is on an active search for
the body of this child. Bradley wants the secret to remain a secret. Tilden wants it out in the open,
wants the closure, even if subconsciously. That s why he finds corn, carrots, and potatoes out in the
fields, while Bradley and the others see only the rain.
The land represents the soul, and is fertile for Tilden because in his way he is seeking to right this
terrible wrong by revealing the child. When Tilden covers Dodge with the corn husks, but leaves his
head uncovered, he is covering him with something good that the land, or in this case his maimed
soul, has produced. He is trying to help Dodge to realize that the truth must be told. Bradley comes
into the room and throws the husks off, shaves Dodge s head and cuts him while he is helpless, like a
punishment for the secret. Then he covers him up, head and all, with the

Villehardouin s Memoirs Of The Fourth Crusades
While the definition of historiography has been slightly amended over time, the study of the way
history has been and is written appears to be the approved meaning.1 Essentially, from my
understanding, historiography is the evaluation of interpretations by historians over time. For example,
Geoffrey de Villehardouin s Memoirs of the Fourth Crusades stands out as a prominent historical
foundation, as very few written accounts of the Crusades describe the political, economic, religious
and military events preceding up to, and subsequently succeeding, from a [the] first person
standpoint.2 Memoirs of the Fourth Crusade is thus reviewed as a uniquely distinguishable, primary
source that affords historians with an incomparable written record ... Show more content on

The historiography falls within the realm of how Shaw, Morris and Marzials reviewed Villehardouin s
work. The historical evaluation would therefore be researching into the sources these authors used, the
degree of knowledge they possess, et al. For historians and students alike, we must appreciate the
necessity to evaluate every aspect independently in an aid to draw our own conclusions; whether they
fall in line with the works reviewed, or follow a completely different pathway. History has always
been exposed to bias at its core, depending upon the circumstances. I believe historiography unravels
any degree of bias. In fact, the more I have read this past week, the more I can remember a former
history professor advising me that when I conduct research, to always have three notebooks handy;
one for the notes I was taking, one to annotate additional sources referenced throughout the work, and
the third is for asking questions beyond the historical fact or event, it is how others have observed the

Misconceptions About Wolves
Many have heard of the famous fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood, in which wolves are portrayed as
evil beings, that have no intention of affection for humans but instead, the instant thought of hunger,
of devouring the individual whole. This story makes one wonder whether wolves are lovely or evil

Introduction Nyke Shoe Company has been in business for over 50 years. Over the last five years, the
company has been undergoing some financial hardship due to an erratic market and an inability to
understand what the consumer actually needs. In a last ditch effort to avoid bankruptcy, they have
adopted a new business model which entails the development of only one shoe size. In order to
achieve this goal, statistical data must be utilized and applied to make the best choice. The data used
will be explained to the fullest and a conclusion will be then obtained.
Methodology

The null hypothesis was that the female and male shoe sizes have an equal mean while the alternative
hypothesis was that female and male shoe sizes do not have an equal mean. With the degrees of
freedom being 33, the t statistic is 8.27. The probability that 8.27 is ≤ 1.69 is 7.5×10 10 for the one
tailed test. Also, the probability that 8.27 is ≤ ±2.03. is 1.5×10 9 for the two tailed test. Due to both
probabilities being under the alpha value of 0.05, the null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative
hypothesis is accepted at the 95% confidence level.
Assuming unequal variances, the two sampled t Test was applied on the data sets of female and male
shoe sizes with the alpha value of 0.05. The null hypothesis was that the female and male shoe sizes
have an equal mean while the alternative hypothesis was that female and male shoe sizes do not have
an equal mean. With the degrees of freedom being 27, the t statistic is 8.16. The probability that 8.16
is ≤ 1.70 is 4.5×10 9 for the one tailed test. Also, the probability that 8.16 is ≤ ±2.05. is 9.1×10 9 for
the two tailed test. Given that both probabilities are under the alpha value of 0.05, the null hypothesis
is therefore rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted at the 95% confidence level.
Discussion
After a close look at the data sets, it has been determined that there is no correlation between height
and shoe size, therefore, the height will be ignored in selecting a shoe.

Causes Of The Pueblo Revolt
Pueblo revolt
The Pueblo revolt was the changing point for the relationship between the Spanish and native
population and one of the earliest tragedies to befall the Natives at the time but to explain what lead to
the revolt we must step back into history and look at the events that lead to this.
The Spanish had been expanding their influence in the new world by conquering the empires and
peoples. Soon they would extend northward continuing to claim new land thereby building New
Spain. Starting in 1540 the Spanish moved into what would become New Mexico. With the Spanish
expansion came soldiers, missionaries, and settlers. These movements would lead to a confrontation
between the Pueblo people and the Spaniards known as the Tiguex War. The Tiguex War was
spearheaded by occurred during the winter of 1540 41. Leading the Spaniard troops was Francisco
Vásquez de Coronado. The Spanish attacked the 12 tribes of the region leading to a further breakdown
of Native and Spanish relations that would continue until 1598. Juan De Onate led a force of over 100
soldiers women children and Priests into the Rio Grande Valley attempting to start a Spanish
settlement. The establishment of this new settlement soon leads to another revolt between the Pueblo
and the Spaniards. This rebellion is known as the Tacoma Massacre. Under the command of Juan De

dollar cost of the CHF1,000,000? Answer: The bank s bid rate is CHF1.3990/$. That is the price at
which the bank is willing to buy $1 in return for CHF1.3990. The bank sells dollars at its ask price
CHF1.4000/$. Mississippi Mud Pies must sell dollars to the bank to buy CHF. Therefore Mississippi
Mud Pies will receive the bank s bid rate of CHF1.3990/$. The dollar cost of CHF1 million is
consequently CHF 1 million / CHF1.399/$ = $714,796 2. If the Japanese yen U.S. dollar exchange

What would be Deutsche Bank s direct asking price for yen (€/¥)? Answer: The direct asking price of
euro per yen (€/¥) is the price at which the bank will sell yen for euros. The bank would want this to
be the same as the price at which it sells euros for dollars (the bank s ask price) times the price at
which it sells dollars for yen. This latter price is the reciprocal of the price at which the bank buys
dollars for yen, which is the bank s bid price of yen per dollar. Thus, the ask price of euros per yen
should be €0.9855/$ [1 / (¥104.30/$)] = € 0.009449/¥

2 Chapter 2: The Foreign Exchange Market 5. Western Mining of Australia has called Mitsubishi
Tokyo Financial to get its opinion about the Japanese yen Australian dollar exchange rate. The current
rate is ¥67.72/A$, and Mitsubishi thinks the Australian dollar will weaken by 5% over the next year.
What is Mitsubishi s forecast of the future exchange rate? Answer: If the Australian dollar weakens
by 5% over the next year, it will take 5% fewer Japanese yen to purchase the Australian dollar. Thus,
the forecast is ¥67.72/A$ (1 0.05) = ¥64.334/A$ 6. Consider the following spot and forward rates
for the yen euro exchange rates: Is the euro at a forward premium or discount? What are the
magnitudes of the forward premiums or discounts when quoted in percentage per annum for a 360 day
year? Answer: The forward rates of yen per euro are lower than the spot rates.

My Love For Science
Nothing had influenced my life more than the beauty of science. The subject is just so fascinating and
really catches my eye as it helps explain virtually everything around me, it helps me understand why
such things are. It is extremely captivating and always makes me eager for more learning and
understanding. However, the real experience lies in the unknown, the regions of science where
research stills needs to be done, where more understanding needs to occur, where science can be used
for the well being of the planet.
Since the summer of 2011, I have been deeply in love with the beauty known as science. During that
summer, I was introduced to the environmental/biological sciences at a summer camp which left a
deep impact on me. I carried these learnings to my fifth grade year in which science and college were
introduced to me, and with this knowledge, I made two goals that I have left my older self: to become
a sort of scientist that will contribute to the world and to get into a dream university. From then, I have
known that my destiny was a science related one (I didn t know exactly what type at that point, only
that it would be done). Then came middle school in which I went to a school focused on
environmental sciences, this is the place where my love for science was cemented as I learned about
all types of sciences and got to understand them in depth or for the first time in my life. I also learned
about opportunities that could further me in my quest to complete my

The Main Disagreements Between the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat Parties
The three main parties in UK politics, Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, are all based on
greatly differing ideologies which can often lead to them having varying viewpoints on key issues.
These differences can often lead to conflicts or disagreements between the parties over which policy
will be most beneficial to the country.
A particularly controversial and fiercely contested issue is the role of the United Kingdom in the
future of the European Union. The Labour party are often considered to be pro Europe although their
policies do tend to keep Britain s interests at heart. Their priorities for Europe ... Show more content

Like Labour, Liberals argue that the EU must be enlarged to guarantee its future survival although,
unlike Labour, they do feel that EU institutions must be made more efficient.
Another controversial political issue is that of constitutional reform. The Liberal Democrat and Labour
policies in this area are very similar in the way that they both believe in devolution of power away
from Westminster through regional assemblies. Both parties feel that many of the current political
systems are outdated and must be modernised if political participation is to rise. The parties do differ
however, on taxes. Labour have always strived to keep taxes as low as possible whilst attempting to
strike a balance with good public services. The Liberal Democrats feel this can only be achieved if
taxes are raised, therefore making the public pay for the improvements. As with the EU, Conservatives
have greatly differing policies from the other two parties. They believe in the preservation of national
sovereignty and traditional political methods. They are strongly opposed to the devolution proposed
by the other parties and this even extends to Northern Ireland, which the Conservatives believe should
be ruled from London.
The whole issue of the welfare state and how much the state should provide for its people has been
argued over

  • 2. The Numbers And Counting System In Ancient Egypt Numbers and counting systems are used daily by everyone. Numerous civilizations throughout history like Egypt, Babylonian, Maya and Africa developed a unique number system. They were commonly used to communicate numbers in an everyday life. Since then counting has changed. A few of the earlier systems had principles that survived and helped in some way, shape or form to create our current Hindu Arabic numbering system. It has become widespread. Back in 3000 B.C, ancient Egypt was using the number system to calculate areas of land, distribute money, and much more. The Egyptian counting system consisted of hieroglyphs and pictorial signs. The graphic numbers can be of a person, animal, or plant. The hieroglyphic numbers were a written form of the number system. It used a decimal base approach. For all the powers of ten, there was a unique symbol. For example, the number ten was represented as a upside down U , for the number a hundred thousand it was tadpole, for a million it was represented by a man kneeling with his arms raised. When reading or writing the number, it is written from right to left. It was written on temples, vases, and stone monuments. The Egyptians used hieroglyphic numbers to advance in architectural achievements. Math was used to make historical creations like tombs and pyramids. Greenwald and Thomley agree that the ancient Egyptians were also aware of fractions, which were primarily written as unit fractions of the form 1⁄n, such as 1⁄2or 1⁄4... ... Gannon cannot be killed without a sword, unlike the other enemies in the game who can be killed using a bomb, candles, wands, and boomerangs. This is the fastest strategy to complete the game, because you are not focused in killing the enemies, but rather on dashing through levels as fast as possible. The sword less community defied the instructions of the developers, because the sword was intended to be used throughout the game. This community believed that the normal rules were too easy and as a result made their own rules to enhance the challenge and fun aspects of the game. Nevertheless, this community exploited the game because they found a way to surpass this rule. Yes, the primary objective is to find a weapon but that necessarily doesn t have to be the sword, this community learned that they can utilize candles, bombs, and arrows to use against enemies. Pm Chrétian Essay The first of these changes was introduced in 1969 and stated that English and French were to be used throughout federal board/administration, which signified the start of language rights in Canada. Later on, in 1982, the Constitution Act was brought in and clearly addressed the importance of language rights in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Today, sections 16 22 of the Charter states that English and French both have equal status, rights, and privileges; section 23 guarantees minority rights to children in Quebec who speak English and French speaking children in the rest of Canada. The language rights within Canada add depth to the sincere maturity and growth that Canada has experienced in the years after WWII. Some direct impacts were the immediate enactments of French policies within the federal government, and indirectly the language rights reduced tension within all of Canada and mainly Quebec. Over the years, language rights have helped the country learn to blend itself back into a bilingual nation of acceptance and diversity. Canada, during the years after WWII, managed to stop the cultural bond between the French and the English from further deteriorating and helped to repair previous bruises by accepting Quebec s ideas and beliefs, by enacting language rights, and through Chrétian s active attendance to maintaining the balance between French and English ... Defined the word superstition, A superstition is a belief or behavior that s inconsistent with conventional science and attributes functional mental properties into non mental phenomenon. (L. 39 to 42) In other words, a superstition is doing something to get a better outcome. To start off, superstitions can make us feel like we are controlling our outcomes and that we are in control of the situations, that we have no control over. They re maintained in part by a phenomenon psychologists call the illusions of control. In certain circumstances, if you perform some action that can t possibly affect the outcome in any real sense, you have the feeling that you have control and that feels good better than just sitting and waiting. (L. 71 to 76) To simplify, superstitions help our brains relax and increase the chances of getting a desired outcome. As a fact, the illusionary feeling of control can strengthen the actual control we have over a situation. To add on, one of the best ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Roots Of Evil By Sharon Begley Natural Devils Are humans created evil or do they develop evil habits? Even though all humans have different personalities, good or sinful, we all have some type of evil in us. Some people are exposed to evil in their early childhoods, therefore, if they acclimatize an evil personality as they become more mature. This causes excessive cycle of humans being created evil if they are raised or treated cruelly as a child. In result, they are more likely to raise and treat their children cruelly. Children who are treated with cruelty at a young age affects how they treat others for the rest of their lives. This proves that both Adam and Eve disobeyed God s commands and were subject to being influenced by evil and wrong doings. Adam and Eve had great guidance during their childhood which resulted in them knowing the difference between good and evil. It is no small thing to forget everything that you have learned when meeting neighbors. Humans form preconceived notions and in that, make choices and judgments on others. This is human nature, trying to figure out, understand, what others are like so we can figure out how to relate to them. David Lamb s book The Arabs is a learned look at the Arab culture through his eyes. David was a correspondent and has been all over the world. As a reporter he has used his ability to merge with the cultures he reports on, to get an overall picture that he presents. The Arabs, by David Lamb seems to try and give an accurate presentation of the current world of the Arabs, but does reinforce some of the Western stereotypes in his book. Lamb opens up about everything he sees, but what he cannot ignore is the Muslim religion Islam. But the Arab remains always the Arab, a man held hostage by religion and culturally obsessed with identity . This opening statement describes what a lot of Westerner s feel when it comes to talking about the Arabs, and that is their faith is the Arab. The West has a hard time separating the two and Lamb made no real try. In fact he explains the Arabs, through their faith, is the reason they actually do many things. When those thirty five United States prove that they can weed out the guilty from the innocent confidently and without fail, maybe then they shall obtain the rationale behind such a serious sanction. Yet as it stands so clumsily today, there is no assurance the death penalty emits for the future. The death penalty is discriminatory against social and economical aspects of society. Studies show that starting in 1977, most of those placed on death row are guilty of killing white victims, and that African Americans enumerate one third of those executions. The most evident factor determining execution is the ethnicity of the victim, which is extremely biased, even if racial hostility is still inextricable to civilization. Not only is the death penalty prejudice, but it is also exceedingly unfair economically. It s horribly expensive to run executions, and the money spent on them could be put into more useful areas of interest and even help reduce rates of crime! A stark difference can be seen between the status of islanders (those who live in Amity) versus those who only come to vacation, such as between Sheriff Brody and Dr. Hooper. Mrs. Kinter, in her desperation for justice, even goes as far as blaming Brody (again a non islander) for her son s death rather than Mayor Vaughn who had been the real culprit behind keeping the beaches open. She also enables two more examples of money and status driven character development by offering a cash reward to anyone that can catch and kill the shark that attacked her son. The character most obviously driven by financial gain is the fisherman Quint who at the town meeting immediately following the attack on Alex Kintner explains that he will bring in the shark for $10,000 instead of the $3,000 offered by Mrs. Kintner. Just as Mayor Vaughn seeks to capitalize on the summertime and tourists, Quint is interested in his own financial gain rather than the safety and wellbeing of the town. • 24. The Machine Stops, By E. M. Forster The Machine Stops Literary Analysis In the short story The Machine Stops , E. M. Forster gives us an insight into a world where technology is in every aspect of our lives. Vashti, the main character, must struggle with her internal conflict and her relations hip with the technology in their world. In addition, Forster uses the central theme to explain our dependence on technology. He also uses symbolism and irony to contribute to this central idea. Through this futuristic setting, Forster develops the fundamental concept of blind faith and its influence in our everyday lives and choices. Firstly, we are introduced to Vashti as a woman about five feet high, with a face as white as fungus. Although in her society she is the perfect size, in our terms her body type could be described as a blob . She would just be pile of flesh and this is due to the lack movement in their lives. As a music lecturer, Vashti is a star citizen in the eyes of her society; however, she nly lectures on already established views of Australian music. Tending to go along with the norms of society, she is a conformist and has no problem firmly believing in what is considered normal . For example, when Kuno declares that he would like to go outside to the surface, she argues that it is contrary to the spirit of the age. This means that she solely disapproves because it is against the ideas of the society. Being quite firm in her beliefs, she can be fairly stubborn as well. If she makes up ... Today these tropical reefs suffer a great deal of environmental stresses and are projected to decline over the next century due to global warming. In Grottoli s article: The cumulative impact of annual coral bleaching can turn some coral species winners into losers, she elaborates on the effects of annual bleaching on three species of coral. Grottoli took three species of coral such as O. Faveolata, P.asreoides P.divaricata and exposed the treatment groups to high temperatures of 31.5 °C for 15 days while control groups remained at a normal temperature of 30.6 °C for the same amount of days. Such high level of energy reserve is a good indication of over all health and ability to acclimate to harsh environments. An endosymbiont level is a measurement of other beneficial cells that lives on the coral and forms a symbiotic relationship. Researchers recorded their results and then repeated the experiment on the same corals a year later to see the effects of repeated high temperatures as a model for annual coral bleaching as a result of global warming. Upon completion of the experiment Grottoli and her team of researchers noted, yearly bleaching can dramatically alter the thermal tolerance of corals (Grottoli s, 2014). Interestingly enough, while the majority of the species decreased in all variables compared to controls, P.divaricata increased in energy reserves at about 20 45% higher than controls after the second treatment. This increase in total energy reserve lead to a reduction in the susceptibility to coral bleaching for that species. Thus, suggests that this species of coral can adapt to high temperatures after the first event of bleaching occurs. Conversely, due to its low energy reserves and its low potential to increase endosymbiont levels, P.asreoides is not likely acclimatize to higher temperatures thus resulting in low abundance of the species in future ... As I was growing up at the end of the week my grandparents, whom I had lived with, would make my sister, brother, and me milkshakes and we would sit outside, look at stars, and talk about how our past week went. When it was occurring I had just thought of the delicious milkshake that I would enjoy and the wishes I would make, but I had recently realized that is what laid the foundation of who I am today. Typically we would always make the milkshake first, with our choice of our favorite ice cream. Then we would sit outside and look for shooting stars. When we found a shooting star we would make a wish. My grandma always asked us about what we had wished for, without giving our exact wish we would elaborate on what it was about. For my wishes, it would always be about my dad or my mom. At the time my dad was in prison and before he had gone away he was the adult I was closest to. It was always hard for me to talk about these wishes. For example, the British newspaper THE INDEPENDENT explains that Tesco has developed a new strategy to help its clients to overcome the global economic crisis. Tesco set up a discount strategy to consumers struggling with the effects of the credit crunch . It creates the pay day strategy (Evans S., 2009). In fact, it tries to simplify the lives of its customers and of its employees. In conclusion, TESCO through its motto is trying to circulate an idea; a habit and a behavior to address face each person; each employee is a sort of flagship of the enterprise; one person is enough to give a bad image, in order that many people think that TESCO is a bad company, all of this is due because of the word of mouth. TESCO has created a corporate culture in order that does not happen with another surface manifestation. Norms Secondly in this second paragraph we talk about the norms of TESCO. In fact Mottoes have concerned the way in which employees should act within the company in relation to clients and colleagues. But the company also uses a strategy to boost its employees. • 30. Bp Oil Spill Letter The purpose for my letter is to express my concerns of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred April 20, 2010. The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill is the most recent oil spill and in all probability the biggest catastrophic spill in the petroleum industry. The BP oil spill did not just affect the company, it affected so much more; it had such a huge impact on the birds, whales, and the costal habitats. Six years ago the Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico blew out, causing an explosion. Oil leaked from the broken well from mid April to mid July, nearly three months, causing more than 200 million gallons of crude oil to swim out onto the gulf shoreline. In addition to the oil, almost 2 million gallons of virulent dispersant was used. The chemical dispersant did not lessen the amount of oil, but broke it into smaller particles, leaving the Gulf of Mexico as a dead zone. My concerns are the animals that are continuing to be harmed by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was a deadly accident that caused a lot of harm; it destroyed Gulf fishing and tourism industries. The spill injured 17 people and 11 people lost their lives. The marine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I write this letter to BP on behalf of myself and many citizens who are concerned. I list plausible solutions so another oil spill does not occur. Investigators say one of the causes for the spill was that it failed to be properly inspected. A way we can easily avoid a second oil spill is by continually and constantly inspecting correctly. Schedule regular audits. Technology has advanced so much that BP can add leak detection devices to the wells. BP should avoid places where there are a lot of fishermen or places like the Gulf of Mexico just because there is a lot of reef that can be harmed again. • 35. Villehardouin s Memoirs Of The Fourth Crusades While the definition of historiography has been slightly amended over time, the study of the way history has been and is written appears to be the approved meaning.1 Essentially, from my understanding, historiography is the evaluation of interpretations by historians over time. For example, Geoffrey de Villehardouin s Memoirs of the Fourth Crusades stands out as a prominent historical foundation, as very few written accounts of the Crusades describe the political, economic, religious and military events preceding up to, and subsequently succeeding, from a [the] first person standpoint.2 Memoirs of the Fourth Crusade is thus reviewed as a uniquely distinguishable, primary source that affords historians with an incomparable written record ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The historiography falls within the realm of how Shaw, Morris and Marzials reviewed Villehardouin s work. The historical evaluation would therefore be researching into the sources these authors used, the degree of knowledge they possess, et al. For historians and students alike, we must appreciate the necessity to evaluate every aspect independently in an aid to draw our own conclusions; whether they fall in line with the works reviewed, or follow a completely different pathway. History has always been exposed to bias at its core, depending upon the circumstances. I believe historiography unravels any degree of bias. In fact, the more I have read this past week, the more I can remember a former history professor advising me that when I conduct research, to always have three notebooks handy; one for the notes I was taking, one to annotate additional sources referenced throughout the work, and the third is for asking questions beyond the historical fact or event, it is how others have observed the ...
