Cultural Identity Divide
Culture can be defined as a belief that allows you to identify who you are. Thus, through cultre there
is self – discovery and belonging in a group of persons who share the same belief system; who have
found themselves and are now seeking to digest more about one another through eachother's'
unearthing of one's self. Culture assists you not only in identifying who you are, but the sort of
people you can surround yourself with due to common interests. In this society; I have witnessed
cultural unity, cultural identity crisis' and moreover a cultural divide and surprisingly all of those
fold under the same umbrella in reagrds to knowing where you stand and those you choose to stand
with. Currently, society is a huge caste system of choices to be made, opinions to be had and
decision making. Often, many are questioned of whose side they are on awhile many don't have the
opportunity to make that decision for they are often placed in a caste based off of appearances. This
generation of millenials confuses the caste system with electronics being in the forefront of their
upbringing; self– discovery is no longer going to a park and playing with kids of similar interests on
the playground; but now finding yourself is depicted by the amount of followers, likes and/ or views
you possess. Moreover, society now can also be defined by who you follow, who ... Show more

The notion of picking a platform to represent your values and integrity and being a solo
representation of those values and beliefs encourages one to battle to get the Presidential candidate

in black and white, conservative or liberal, and for many rich or poor. The unfortunate truth with

Hispanic Cultural Identity
Relevant identities:
My identity as a Hispanic
My identity as a border town Hispanic
My identity as a "city" Hispanic
My identity as a Latina (different connotation than Hispanic)
My identity as a "white–washed" Latina (from a "traditional" Latina/o perspective)
Note 1: This identity is common amongst Latina/os who have immigrant parents and pursue higher
education (or in general have interests that typically "Americans" or "white–people" have)
Note 2: This identity is particularly important because I care about environmental issues, and in my
family (and community) this is seen as a "white" thing. I would like to better understand why
environmentalism and being "authentically" Latina/o are considered mutually exclusive.

Why do I care about this? Is this morally and culturally ethical? Ignorance is bliss, no? Of course,
considering the environmental, social inequalities, and health aspects, my interests seem to be

ponder their meaning. Specifically, however, LFP will allow me to incorporate and further
understand my own "lived experience" regarding environmentalism and being Latina. In other
words, LPF gives me an academic voice to articulate and expand on my experience. For example,

My Cultural Identity
What do you think of when someone asks you what culture is? Some may say the differences of a
nation, social class, color, race and religion. This is Google's version of culture: "the arts and other
manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively." I am a boy of many secrets
or personalities and I have a different cultural identity from everyone else, there is no such thing as
two individuals having the same cultural identities. Every trait that you have makes up your cultural
identity. Our parents may have forced us to develop certain traits, for example my teacher says that I
am hardworking due to me always wanting more and more work, but sometimes we develop traits
ourselves, sometimes good or bad and those traits make us, us. I have three main aspects of my
cultural identity and those three aspects are
Politeness, Strength and Hospitality. This summer I have went overseas to the country of Ukraine,
Ukraine is seen as a dangerous and violent country with evil lurking in the shadows and corners.
With a chance of someone starting a war at any moment. This is the single story that Americans see
in Ukraine. I was born in America and lived here for 15 years, hearing this story over and over, I
started to believe this, this is what you may call a "Single Story". A single story is a story that is
describing an individual, a country an animal or anything else, but when you hear the same story or

Personal Essay: Cultural Identity
Initially when one says the word "identity" most would bring themselves to a brief summary of who
they suppose they are as a being. Certainly the word "identity" is the fact of being someone or
something they claim to be. By that (second definition) you can infer that when you claim to be
someone or something, that doesn't inevitably lead to a fact.. When you add the word "cultural" in
front of the word "identity" it brings a more "belonging" sentiment. That being a belonging to a
certain group based on your identity. In that, let the question commence. Who am I really? There are
many characteristics that were either given or found out on my own. I've been known to be very
passionate in things I enjoy. Such as, English, Writing, Grammar, and Music. I really love words,
and in using those I am wasting words trying to categorize myself. Regarding categorizing, I am not
a fan of using my organization skills on categorizing humans to a unquestionable state of being. In
that I will not be talking about my "cultural identity", but furthermore my "identity" in general. A lot

I have many habits that may be a little funky to one person but familiar to another. One case is the
fact that I always wear a hair tie on my finger. I have had two misinterpretations of this. One was
that they believed that I wore it to avoid cutting circulation on my wrists. Wrong. Another was
because they thought I wanted to look married. Very wrong. The truth of the matter is that I just got
a habit to it, I did it once at random and now it gives me a sense of security. The hair tie and a
bracelet that was given to me by my love has now become two securities. If they're not with me (a
break of habit) then things tend to become out of the ordinary. When I don't follow habit, I feel very
uncanny. That tells you a little more about my

Personal Elements Of Cultural Identity
Cultural identity is feeling or belonging to a group. For example Language, Religion, Jobs, or even
daily life are some elements of culture. Your language is important so you can communicate with
people like you. Religion is really important because more than likely you won't get along with
another tribe that doesn't believe what you believe or believes the opposite. Clothing is also a
cultural identity for example Tongan men wear sarong which is kind of like a skirt but for a man. By
their clothing you can kind of determine their culture some wear the same thing but you can
definitely tell they aren't from america. There are many different religions which separates different
cultures like Buddhism and Christianity they have way different beliefs but that ... Show more

In Asian cultures making eye contact is rude but in American culture it is very polite and shows you
are listening to someone when they are talking. There are obviously so many different things that
make a culture but the one i want to focus on is FOOD! The food is the most important part in my
opinion because you can make kind of the same food but in different cultures make it their way and
make it their own. For example in America when we make noodles it may be different from the way
Mexico makes noodles they love spicy foods so they might make their noodles really spices as ours
just have normal spices added to it or cheese to make mac and cheese. The way we eat our food is
different we use forks or our fingers but in China they use chopsticks to eat their food. Pizza is
originally from Italy but now we have it here and i'm sure people have changed it over the years and
added their own likings to it to make it taste like their culture. Traditional foods are foods that have

Identity And Cultural Identity: The Relationship Between...
Culture and Identity
Culture is the values, beliefs, thinking patterns and behavior that are learned and shared and that is
characteristic of a group of people. It serves to give an identity to a group, ensures survival and
enhances the feeling of belonging. Identity is the definition of ones– self. It is a person's frame of
reference by which he perceives himself. Identities are constructed by an integral connection of
language, social structures, gender orientation and cultural patterns. There is a complex relationship
between culture and identity.
Cultural Identity
Cultural identity is self–identification, a sense of belonging to a group that reaffirms itself. It is the
extent to which one is a representative of a given culture behaviorally, communicatively,
psychologically and sociologically. It consists of values, meanings, customs and beliefs used to
relate to the world. It reflects the common historical experiences and shared ... Show more content

1) Avowal and Ascription:These two concepts deal with what constructs or produces the cultural
identity and the ways in which these identities are communicated.Avowal is how one articulates or
expresses his/her views about group identity. It is how one presents oneself to another.Ascription is
how others perceive an individual. It is how one refers to others. This may include stereotypes.
Eg.How Asians are viewed by Europeans.
Our identity is constructed as a result of how others view us and how we view ourselves. Therefore
both avowal and ascription are important. Eg.Insiders describe their culture different from how it is
perceived by others. Avowed qualities versus ascribe qualities leads to conflict but resolutions

Understanding Your Cultural Identity "Children begin to develop a sense of identity as individuals
and as members of groups from their earliest interactions with others (McAdoo, 1993; Sheets,
1999a)"(Trumbull and Pacheco 9). The very idea of being able to understand your own culture can
better you as a person and give you an even deeper understanding of life. Such cultural things you
should understand is your beliefs, the types of food you eat, what types of ethnicity they belong to,
and even where you live. These four things can give you a deeper understanding of your own
culture. Now a day cultures are mixed it is said that "Not all of these aspects need to be shared,

Cultural Aspects Of Cultural Identity
Cultural identity varies from person to person and To me cultural identity basically means what kind
of person you are and the way you see others. it plays a big role in life and there are lots of aspects
such as religion, language, racial identity, values and gender. Those aspects define your cultural
identity.
One of the cultural aspects that I will talk about has impacted my life the most which is my religion
and that religion is christianity. When I was one month old my parents took me to church for the
first time so that I would get blessed by the pastor ever since I have been to church every Sunday

and how to take care of them and make sure they grow correctly, nice and ripe. My mom also taught
me how to cook and make all sorts of food. One of the foods was a soup from Russia that was used
in multiple countries from Europe Used as a main dish . She even taught me how to do the laundry
and wash the floors when I was young. They also taught me to always respect our guests and when
we see them we say "pace" which means peace and we shake hands as respect. if we have food on
the table to let them always eat first. then when they go home we will eat whatever is left. And if we
are invited to someone's house after we eat we help them clean the dishes and wipe table as a sign
that we thank them for the meal.

1. Was it easy or difficult for you to complete the worksheet? In what ways was it easy or difficult?
It took me a couple of minutes, but it was not so difficult, at my age I have very clear what is
important to create my cultural identity. I'm 39 years old, mom, I have traveled, born in another
country, met so many cultures, met so many with different sex orientation, religions, or education
that I can place them in a priority level on this stage of my life easily. Many if I did 20 years ago, I
will place them different from now. I identity myself as a mom, first than anything, so I relate well
with other moms, education, abilities, and spirituality are very important for me. I prefer and tend to
feel comfortable around happy people, people who are creative, it doesn't matter how much money
they have but they manage to provide for their kids. People who are relax, free, don't judge religion,
just accept people as people. Nationality, ethnicity, and relationality comes to be situational,
depending where I am, I identify more the cultures, if I'm here in PA, or NY or Ecuador. I becomes
important but it's situational, I don't think important where you were born or which is your ethnicity
but more important your family values. And the least salient are age, sex, sex orientation and
religion, I really don't judge, care, or think your age, sex, or sex orientation defines who you are. My

backgrounds reflect on the things that you do. Such as for me i was brought up hunting and

Cultural Identity Development
Before we delve into how culture and society heavily influences our identity, we must consider what
makes a society a society. In a sense, a society is expounded as a group of individuals who live
under a particular ambiance and collaborate in the exchange of words while sharing common
interests and aims amongst each other. The people of today have the fascinating ability to
accumulate unique ideas that could potentially change the world as well as influence others into how
they may think of themselves. I am drawn to the thought that in order for there to be change, there
must be those who are willing to sacrifice. Unfortunately, there are some things that go sacrificed
unwillingly but are condoned by the majority as the norm. The culture that we hold behind our
identities often becomes distorted by outside factors such as our peers and the world around us. The
moment we are born into this world, we are exposed to new stimuli on a daily basis. Things like
friends and family have a huge influence on one's identity. Humans are naturally driven by the
strong desire of belongingness within our communities and so we look for the fragments that
develop our identities. Individuals seek traits that will make others ... Show more content on

No matter who you are or what environment you live under, the physical or mental aspects of that
particular individual will be greatly affected by the society that they themselves explore every day.
Before we answer this particular question, we must understand just how human identity is
developed, what culture consists of, and then drive towards our conclusion of how culture influences
identity development. For the most part, in order to know what stimulates the growth of identity
development, we must comprehend how identity is developed. Identity development starts with
infants realizing their sense of self which perpetuates throughout childhood and then becomes the

following what your parents did. You are taught based on what your parents tell you, and your
parents are taught on what their parents tell them. Then slowly it starts growing into our cultural
identity over the multiple generations. As you probably know, there is a big age gap between your
parents and your self. In the nowadays generation, the way we talk is considered to be rude to

a lot from the 1900's, now having these famous Rappers like 21 Savage, Nav, Lil Uzi Vert. If a
person from an older generation listens to this type of music they will most likely go crazy, because
of the laughing they use. Not just music but also technology, the way technology is used has

Ethnic Identity And Cultural Identity
Ethnic identity much like racial identity is difficult to clearly discern and delineate. As a social
construct, it is an umbrella term that mark a group affiliation to a common origin, culture, religion,
or geography; it consists of shared traditions, behaviors, values and beliefs. (Waters, 1990) Outlining
the elements and components of ethnic identity, Phinney and Ong (2007) stress its
multidimensionality and dynamism, it encompasses several cultural, linguistic, behavioral features
as well as being developmental and involving a shifting process. They consider self–categorization,
commitment, and sense of attachment to the group as vital constituents of ethnic identity. They show
that "the process of ethnic identity formation involves the construction over time of one's sense of
self as a group member and of one's attitudes and understandings associated with group
membership" (2007, p. 275) Exploration and commitment are the two head titles in the revised
model to measure the formation of identity across different groups (MEIM–R, Multigroup Ethnic
Identity Measure). The model proposes a set of questions that capture the individual's overall
knowledge, understanding, engagement, sense of belonging and attachment to the social group.
Minority groups in general have to encounter and deal with two fundamental conflicts due to their
identification with the non–dominant group: first, stereotyping and prejudice of the dominating
group which problematize their self–image. Second,

Cultural Identity Essay
What is one without a cultural Identity? This is not possible, everyone of us has a cultural identity,
they've just never realized it yet. People go on through their daily lives with little regard to who they
are. Everyone of us has a cultural identity, but we are all very different. As for me, what am I? I
know I am half–Japanese and half–Caucasian, which makes me a hapa, but deeper than that, what
am I more than just my race? One of the most important elements to define your cultural Identity is
to know who raised you. Whether it is your blood–parents or maybe a guardian. They've raised you
to become the person you are today. All the things they do for celebrations, traditions, religion, etc
as they raised you has become ingrained into your cultural identity. You may notice you do things
differently from other people and that is because it is the way your family does things. I was born to
a Japanese mother, and Caucasian (Irish, German, and Lithuanian) father and was also raised by
them. My mother being full Japanese, all the things we do for celebrations, traditions, etc is directly
influenced from Japanese culture. I even talk fluent Japanese and that is the main way I speak to my
mom. She raised me for all my life, and made me who I am. My father was in the Navy so for the

Examples Of The Racial / Cultural Identity Development Model
The Racial/Cultural Identity Development model (R/CID) is an expansion of the Minority Identity
Development model. The R/CID model encompasses a broader population and removes the term
"minority," which can be disempowering to individuals. This model works to aid therapists in
assessment and intervention of culturally diverse clients. It has five levels of development that
individuals undergo to understand the dominant culture, their own culture, and the relationship
between the two cultures, which is often oppressive. The first level of development is the conformity
phase. In the conformity phase, people are more appreciative of the dominant culture's
characteristics over their own culture's values. In the United States, this dominant culture is the
White American culture and serves as the reference group for those individuals in the conformity
phase. Individuals can be in this phase without having a disdain for their own culture. Because the
White culture is the dominant culture, individuals may conform to this culture in order to avoid
feeling inferior. Within each of the five phases of the R/CID model, attitudes and beliefs are further
broken down. For individuals in the conformity phase, the attitude and belief towards the self are
characterized by negative views. Cultural and physical characteristics of the individual's own culture
are unwanted and should be denied or changed. Attitudes towards members of the same group are
also highly negative. Individuals in the

Food Imparts Cultural Identity
Cultural identity formulates the foundation from which each aspect of life is built, those key aspects
being represented through food. By mirroring essential elements of life, food infuses cultural
identity, reflecting one's values and depicting the manner in which they live their life. Food imparts
on one's cultural identity, shaping their many beliefs, and displaying one's ethnic background, acting
as the greatest influence on cultural identity. Much about an individual's cultural heritage and ethical
beliefs are reflected through the type of food they eat and their food etiquette, demonstrated through
The Language of Baklava, written by Diana Abu–Jaber.

"Dale, dale, dale, No pierdas el tino; Porque si lo pierdes, Pierdes el camino". The classic piñata
song that is sung at parties. It translates to "Go, go, go, don't lose your aim; because if you lose it,

by music, technology, and sports.
Almost everyone listens to music and people tend to have their own taste or style of music. My taste
of music has changed throughout middle school to highschool, however it is not too drastic. The
style of music went from ultimate fangirl of boy bands such as One Direction or Five Seconds of
Summer, to listening to Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. Not only that, but I've also started to dig in
with my ethnicity and started listening to spanish music on my own time. My experiences at parties
and being around my family with them blasting banda sparked my interest to listen to spanish
music. Listening to spanish music also helped with my spanish since unfortunately, I am taking
french instead of spanish for my language course. These changes have made me love and appreciate
both spanish and english music, which is an important part of my life.

Writing An Essay On Cultural Identity
Cultural Identity Essay Cultural identity is the basis in which identification is used to express
different aspects pertaining to identity and heritage. A person's cultural identity may be created by
social organization, as well as traditions and customs within their lives. The two aspects that
construct my cultural identity are the frequent chores I must complete every day in order to fulfill
my behavioral expectations, and the youth group I attend weekly. These aspects are important to my

Cultural Identity Paper Culture in today's society has become a very big deal. Different types of
culture evolve every day, based on the new ways that are emerging and the opinions different groups
of people are coming together to believe in. Each person can socially identify with many different
cultures and subcultures based on the things they believe in and like to do. They can also be based
on things like how they were raised and the people who influenced a certain type of culture around
them. In the following, I will discuss Hidalgo's three levels of culture as they relate to my personal
culture and cultural identity, and how different things in life have influenced what my culture is. I ...

Manners and being courteous and polite is probably the biggest thing about my culture. Rudeness
and disrespect is not tolerated in my culture. We also believe in listening and understanding to work
out problems. There are many different parts of humanities, including literature art or music, which
can greatly influence a person's cultural identity. For me, music is, what I believe, the basis of my
cultural identity. Music can provide so much advice from other peoples' standpoints that touches
who I am morally, and emotionally. It is what allows me to express who I am, as well as what I turn
to in hard situations. It is what I grew up around, and how I express my religion in church situations.
It is also a way for me to teach my child about different aspects of life and culture. Music is
involved in every part of my culture. Many people express their cultures differently. I think the first
thing I notice about someone's cultural identity is the way they dress, the way they greet other
people, and the way they speak. This kind of helps me get an idea of where the person comes from,
maybe the culture that makes them, and it helps me to determine how to greet and speak to them. I
am ok with people identifying me the same way if someone else was trying to determine how to
approach me, or understand who I really am. Although I don't want my physical appearance to be

Cultural Identity Essay
Directions: Using your knowledge on writing MLA formatted essays, write the cultural identity
synthesis essay below.
One source once stated, "Children begin to develop a sense of identity as individuals and as
members of groups from their earliest interactions with others" (Trumbull and Pacheco 9). People
should examine their own culture in order to better understand how it affects their identity and
perceptions. In order to understand one's cultural identity, he or she needs to understand what the
term means. According to one source, cultural identity can be defined as "[t]he system of
understanding characteristics of that individual's society, or of some subgroup within that society.

Parents and grandparents may teach traditions and pass down history because it is what is important
to them. In the short story "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, one of the conflicts revolve around
quilts that have been in their family for a while. "They had been pieced by Grandma Dee and the
Big Dee and me had hang them on the quilt frames on the porch and quilted them" (Walker 25–26).
The quilts are a piece of their past and heritage. "In both of them were scraps of dresses Grandma
Dee had worn fifty and more years ago. Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrell's Paisley shirts. And one
teeny faded blue piece that was from Great Grandpa Ezra's uniform that he wore in the Civil War"
(Walker 26). The quilts make them who they are today by reminding the family of their roots. In
another short story, "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan, the narrator's mother moved to America and shaped
her daughter's perspective. "My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in
America" (Tan 21). The speaker developed and shared this idea because she got it from her mother.

is to be patient and creative when dealing with the order you want to load the dishes into the

morals not only apply to my chores, but it applies to the way I interact with others and the way my

Identity And Identity Theory: Language And Cultural Identity
Introduction
Languages are not solely symbolic means of communication, they are storages in which people's
culture is preserved across time. Language is the cornerstone of people's sense of belonging and
their sense of self. As researchers assume that language is the cultural marker, cultural identity is the
identifier of all aspects of human life. Language is a regulator of humans' social life, of their
individual and cultural identity.
Language and cultural identity are at the epicenter of the present paper, because identity both at
individual and collective level has always been a problem of humanity. The language and cultural
identity are the least explored, and the least understood dichotomy. Identification is considered

Social identity theory puts forward the idea that human beings possess their own perception/sense of
belonging to a particular social group (Stets & Burke, 2000).
According to Stryker, Hogg, Turner and other identity practitioners (Turner 1985, Stryker 1980,
Stets & Burke, 2000) the 'self is reflexive' and represents a separate category which is embedded in
self–categorization process and, in parallel, it is served as an object of classification which contrasts
itself. They argue that a coherent sense of identity is formed through the process of categorization
and identification (Stets & Burke, 2000).
Earlier, Mead (1934) made a distinction between "I" and "me" which is labeled as a boundary
between "self" and "identity". He believes that individual identity should be viewed as a sequential
process which place the human beings in a specific time and space. Mead argues that there is a
dialectical relationship between "self", society and the preexisting social structures. The contexts
determine the development of "self", therefore, the constructed "self" interacting with others shapes
the emerging social

My Cultural Identity
After countless tries by my ancestors to establish a life in the United States it seemed destiny had a
place for me. Come to think of it, may it wasn't destiny calling my family to cross the border, rather
our native land was calling us home. Still how colonized have I become to accept my new identity.
In the novel, Cruz comments that Esperanza changed her son's name from Robert to Bobby. (Loc.
215) "Call him Bobby. In America, he's Bobby, Esperanza said" (Cruz). My parents didn't assimilate
that quickly. My full name is Socorro Martinez, and I'm the youngest of eight children. My father
came to this country during the Bracer Act Program, after it was terminated in 1964 he worked in
construction. My mother followed six years later with three children, after losing her daughter to an
illness. I was named after my mother but was given the nick name Suki. Growing up no one called
by my first name. I built an identity based on my nick name, and slowly my cultural identity was
diminishing.
I found it coincidental that like my family I too embarked in a journey and sacrificed for my
children. My husband, children and I moved Washington State two years ago. Just like Santo left the
Dominican Republic and Esperanza left Puerto Rico towards the United States to give their family a
better life. (Loc. 332) Although I was surrounded by a vast amount of greenery, I missed the sound

three microcultures in which I feel challenged or frustrated are race/ethnicity, gender, and age. I am
not dominant in the race/ ethnicity microculture therefore it challenges me. Being a female with
colored skin had brought many challenges along my life. For example, one evening at work a co
worker was trying to turn off the lights of the building and she accidentally turned off a switch
which wasn't ours. I immediately turned the switch back on and went to apologize to the lady

Race is based on how different I physically look between other groups of people. I am then part of

Sexual Identity And Cultural Identity In Mosquita Y Mari
Mosquita y Mari is a film about two sophomore girls who begin a friendship, and quickly develop
intimate feelings for one another. Main character Yolanda is a straight A, 4.0 GPA student who has
the goal of going to college in the United States as her main priority. Upon starting high school,
Yolanda's two best friends from middle school drift away from her, meeting new crowds and begin
consuming marijuana and alcohol regularly. Unable to ask her parents for advice due to the growing
tension in their marriage, Yolanda opts to start a new friendship with a neighbor and classmate by
the name of Mari. Mari is a rebel that does poorly in school, skips classes and sells shop flyers to
help her mother pay bills after the death of her father. Like many second–generation Mexican
immigrants in the United States, Yolanda and Mari experience different cultural identities on a day–
to–day basis. A cultural identity is the feeling of belonging to a group of people. A majority of
second generation immigrants experience American cultural identities in public and Mexican
cultural identities in the household. Individual conflicts may arise when an individual tries to
integrate a new culture into their lives, which can create stress and identity issues. One identity issue
that many immigrants struggle with is the development of a sexual identity, also known as how a
person views themselves in relation to whom they are attracted to. Second generation immigrants to

The Current Challenges of Cultural Identity Essay
Cultural identity refers to the feeling belonging to a certain culture that is attributed to the
upbringing of an individual in the given culture. Cultural identity gives a person the sense of
belonging and belonging towards their culture. Modern cultural studies show that cultural
identification has taken a new face. Various cultural identifiers can be used to identify the culture of
an individual. These identifiers include nationality, language, location, gender, religious beliefs,
history, and ethnicity. Culture is important in shaping the identity of an individual. The efforts of
people trying to preserve their cultural identities can bring about hatred and division in the society.

In most case, identity is shaped by culture. Since culture is a set of ideals life practices, routines and
attitudes set up by a certain community hence culture plays a major role in shaping the identity of an
individual. An individual's character and attributes can be because of their background. This is due
to the set up that one has grown up (Dumas 19). People tend to learn more about their culture, and as
they grow up it becomes part of them. They embrace the culture's beliefs and tend to do things
following the set routines. The aspect of following the set routine and beliefs play a significant part
in shaping the identity of an individual. The identity of an individual is evident in a person from the
things that they do about their culture. Some individuals with the knowledge that they have acquired
from their culture are willing to carry out activities depicting their knowledge. A person's identity
can be known from the way they express themselves in relation to their culture, his notion brings
about the aspect of one's identity in relation to their culture. This aspect of culture shaping an
individual's identity experiences challenges in some given instances. Migration to another country
with a different culture can be a big challenge to a person who is accustomed to a certain culture.
This is because one may be unable to fit in the new environment because of the new culture. Factors
that can cause lack of incorporation include

Cultural Identity And Cultural Values
Despite the centrality of culture in defining who we are, its definition continues to allude many.
While some may see culture as the material relics of a certain group, such as food, dress art or
language, others view it as the intangible beliefs and norms which govern our behaviour. Indeed,
culture is a multifaceted and subjective construct that becomes internalized and therefore is a driving
force in the formation of our unique identities. Cultural identity thus becomes an expression of our
governing systems of kinship, ethnicity, race and religion, interacting with the social, economic and
political world around us (Hall, 1995). In this way, cultural identity represents the extent we feel
connected to and a part of a given cultural group. While identity formation is a fluid construct which
is subject to evolution and influence, one could argue that people born to the dominant in–group
experience a relatively smooth and unvaried transition into their sense of self. Conversely, first or
second generation immigrants who have stake in two different worlds may find themselves hindered
by conflicting values, practices and identities. Indeed, globalization has opened up the door for
culture to flow between time and space and thus it becomes transferable (Hall, 1995). This
transference has large implications for both racism and nationalism as overt differences between
peoples can become a point of tension. As such, culture becomes a powerful concept with the ability

Identity Theory: Cultural Identity, Identity And Identity
Theory
Cultural Identity Theory. Culture is the values, beliefs, thinking patterns and behavior that are
learned and shared and that is characteristic of a group of people. It serves to give an identity to a
group, ensures survival and enhances the feeling of belonging. Identity is the definition of ones–
self. It is a person's frame of reference by which he perceives himself. Identities are constructed by
an integral connection of language, social structures, gender orientation and cultural patterns. There
is a complex relationship between culture and identity. Cultural identity is self–identification, a
sense of belonging to a group that reaffirms itself. It is the extent to which one is a representative of
a given culture behaviorally, communicatively, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As stated by communicationtheory.org, the theory suggests a relationship between inter–cultural
competence and cultural identity. The theory deals with the study into how individuals use
communicative processes to construct and negotiate their cultural group identities and relationships
in particular contexts. According to the theory, culture is one of the many identities expressed in
communication encounters. Cultural identity becomes evident through social comparison. Speakers
compare the status position of their own groups to those of other groups. An individual's message
during interaction will contain multiple cultural identities such as nationalist, racist, ethnic, class
related, sex, gender based, political and religious. Because individuals enact multiple identities all
voices within a group do not speak in the same way or have the same recognition by others. Early
versions of the theory focused on an interpretative theoretical perspective (cultural identity
processes were described not critiqued), social construction and individual discursive accounts of
experience. Recent years have seen the shift to increased critical perspective–attention to contextual
structure, ideologies and status

My Paper On Cultural Identity
My paper was based on the first topic about how someone's life history can tell you about their
cultural identity. The person I interviewed was a second generation 32 year old immigrant from
Mexico. She is a very kind person, with such an adventurous personality. My plan was to ask several
questions about her life, as well as what she has faced. This is so I can learn more from her and her
culture. I asked a couple of questions about her life and practices to figure out how family and
changes helped her adapt to what culture she identifies with growing up. My first heading will
consist of her childhood growing up, the culture she grew up with and how her family plays the
important part of her culture. My second will consist on her adult changes and her identity she has
formed. I will then explain how her experiences have helped shaped her through her life and what
she talks about during the interview as well as any other stories she would like to contribute.
To begin with, she was born in Tijuana, Mexico. She was homeschooled after she finished middle
school because her parents believed it to be better for her to remain home to teach her how they see
fit. Her connection with her parents was not that good, but they still bonded during holidays and
cultural traditions. She identifies with the American culture more than a Mexican culture, despite her
mother being Mexican; she did not live a Mexican lifestyle or celebrated much Mexican holidays
growing up. I thought this was

Identity: My Culture, Identity, And Cultural Identity
My Cultural identity
The pendulum in a grandfather's clock speaks to me the most. It swings back and forth between two
sides, never truly belong in neither. Growing up, this is what I have always felt, whether it was my
ethnicity, cultural identity, or my social identity encompassing my ideology and political opinions. It
was a challenge, to say the least. My two drastically different worldviews were in constant conflict.
Today, as an adult, I have come to the realisation that there was no need to limit myself within a

To me, cultural identity is a person's sense of belonging to a group due to a shared similar set of

However, there were times where I threw tantrums at my mother for refusing to get me a certain toy

were widely accepted and encouraged at the time, both in households and schools.
Religion was not a major part of my family, though my mother is a Buddhist and also extremely

Perhaps it was my mother's influence that I developed a rather open–minded attitude towards all

The narrator explains that her father, Chang, was born and raised in China but moved to Brooklyn at
the age of 13 or 14. Because of the distance between him and his home country, he had a hard time
fitting into society. She further describes that because he was separated from his culture he always
wanted to go back to China, since it was where he grew up. As Nunez narrates the toll of being
separation of Chang and his culture she expresses that "'He always wanted to go back. He always

Because "[h]e always wanted to go back," it proves that he never enjoyed his life because he was

Culture identity development is an important part of every life due the emergence of self through
primary and sociocultural contexts (Ecklund, 2016). These stages of development are made up of
either a dominant or a non–dominant group and intersectional adaptation. More specifically, cultural
identity is a self–construct where individuals share the same culture, which causes them to attribute
themselves to that group (Ecklund, 2016). Being a part of the dominant culture in the United States

There are four types of coping strategies avoidance, activism, rationalization, and color

Cultural Identity Divide

  • 1. Cultural Identity Divide Culture can be defined as a belief that allows you to identify who you are. Thus, through cultre there is self – discovery and belonging in a group of persons who share the same belief system; who have found themselves and are now seeking to digest more about one another through eachother's' unearthing of one's self. Culture assists you not only in identifying who you are, but the sort of people you can surround yourself with due to common interests. In this society; I have witnessed cultural unity, cultural identity crisis' and moreover a cultural divide and surprisingly all of those fold under the same umbrella in reagrds to knowing where you stand and those you choose to stand with. Currently, society is a huge caste system of choices to be made, opinions to be had and decision making. Often, many are questioned of whose side they are on awhile many don't have the opportunity to make that decision for they are often placed in a caste based off of appearances. This generation of millenials confuses the caste system with electronics being in the forefront of their upbringing; self– discovery is no longer going to a park and playing with kids of similar interests on the playground; but now finding yourself is depicted by the amount of followers, likes and/ or views you possess. Moreover, society now can also be defined by who you follow, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The notion of picking a platform to represent your values and integrity and being a solo representation of those values and beliefs encourages one to battle to get the Presidential candidate closer to victory. Hispanic Cultural Identity Relevant identities: My identity as a Hispanic My identity as a border town Hispanic My identity as a "city" Hispanic My identity as a Latina (different connotation than Hispanic) My identity as a "white–washed" Latina (from a "traditional" Latina/o perspective) Note 1: This identity is common amongst Latina/os who have immigrant parents and pursue higher education (or in general have interests that typically "Americans" or "white–people" have) Note 2: This identity is particularly important because I care about environmental issues, and in my family (and community) this is seen as a "white" thing. I would like to better understand why environmentalism and being "authentically" Latina/o are considered mutually exclusive. What do I care about?: Understanding cultural differences in environmentalism Understanding insufficient environmental stewardship (in general) Understanding insufficient environmental stewardship in Hispanic communities Understanding insufficient environmental ... Of course, considering the environmental, social inequalities, and health aspects, my interests seem to be clearly justified ... no? Philosophical inquiry will allow me to ask these questions and meticulously ponder their meaning. Specifically, however, LFP will allow me to incorporate and further understand my own "lived experience" regarding environmentalism and being Latina. In other words, LPF gives me an academic voice to articulate and expand on my experience. • 5. My Cultural Identity What do you think of when someone asks you what culture is? Some may say the differences of a nation, social class, color, race and religion. This is Google's version of culture: "the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively." I am a boy of many secrets or personalities and I have a different cultural identity from everyone else, there is no such thing as two individuals having the same cultural identities. Every trait that you have makes up your cultural identity. Our parents may have forced us to develop certain traits, for example my teacher says that I am hardworking due to me always wanting more and more work, but sometimes we develop traits ourselves, sometimes good or bad and those traits make us, us. I have three main aspects of my cultural identity and those three aspects are Politeness, Strength and Hospitality. This summer I have went overseas to the country of Ukraine, Ukraine is seen as a dangerous and violent country with evil lurking in the shadows and corners. With a chance of someone starting a war at any moment. This is the single story that Americans see in Ukraine. I was born in America and lived here for 15 years, hearing this story over and over, I started to believe this, this is what you may call a "Single Story". A single story is a story that is describing an individual, a country an animal or anything else, but when you hear the same story or maybe multiple other stories, but they all have ... • 7. Personal Essay: Cultural Identity Initially when one says the word "identity" most would bring themselves to a brief summary of who they suppose they are as a being. Certainly the word "identity" is the fact of being someone or something they claim to be. By that (second definition) you can infer that when you claim to be someone or something, that doesn't inevitably lead to a fact.. When you add the word "cultural" in front of the word "identity" it brings a more "belonging" sentiment. That being a belonging to a certain group based on your identity. In that, let the question commence. Who am I really? There are many characteristics that were either given or found out on my own. I've been known to be very passionate in things I enjoy. Such as, English, Writing, Grammar, and Music. I really love words, and in using those I am wasting words trying to categorize myself. Regarding categorizing, I am not a fan of using my organization skills on categorizing humans to a unquestionable state of being. In that I will not be talking about my "cultural identity", but furthermore my "identity" in general. A lot of the time I like to mention the recessive genes I've inherited from my parent's. I use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have many habits that may be a little funky to one person but familiar to another. One case is the fact that I always wear a hair tie on my finger. I have had two misinterpretations of this. One was that they believed that I wore it to avoid cutting circulation on my wrists. Wrong. Another was because they thought I wanted to look married. Very wrong. The truth of the matter is that I just got a habit to it, I did it once at random and now it gives me a sense of security. The hair tie and a bracelet that was given to me by my love has now become two securities. If they're not with me (a break of habit) then things tend to become out of the ordinary. • 9. Personal Elements Of Cultural Identity Cultural identity is feeling or belonging to a group. For example Language, Religion, Jobs, or even daily life are some elements of culture. Your language is important so you can communicate with people like you. Religion is really important because more than likely you won't get along with another tribe that doesn't believe what you believe or believes the opposite. Clothing is also a cultural identity for example Tongan men wear sarong which is kind of like a skirt but for a man. By their clothing you can kind of determine their culture some wear the same thing but you can definitely tell they aren't from america. In Asian cultures making eye contact is rude but in American culture it is very polite and shows you are listening to someone when they are talking. There are obviously so many different things that make a culture but the one i want to focus on is FOOD! The food is the most important part in my opinion because you can make kind of the same food but in different cultures make it their way and make it their own. For example in America when we make noodles it may be different from the way Mexico makes noodles they love spicy foods so they might make their noodles really spices as ours just have normal spices added to it or cheese to make mac and cheese. The way we eat our food is different we use forks or our fingers but in China they use chopsticks to eat their food. Culture and Identity Culture is the values, beliefs, thinking patterns and behavior that are learned and shared and that is characteristic of a group of people. It serves to give an identity to a group, ensures survival and enhances the feeling of belonging. Identity is the definition of ones– self. It is a person's frame of reference by which he perceives himself. Identities are constructed by an integral connection of language, social structures, gender orientation and cultural patterns. There is a complex relationship between culture and identity. Cultural Identity Cultural identity is self–identification, a sense of belonging to a group that reaffirms itself. Understanding Cultural Identity Understanding Your Cultural Identity "Children begin to develop a sense of identity as individuals and as members of groups from their earliest interactions with others (McAdoo, 1993; Sheets, 1999a)"(Trumbull and Pacheco 9). The very idea of being able to understand your own culture can better you as a person and give you an even deeper understanding of life. Such cultural things you should understand is your beliefs, the types of food you eat, what types of ethnicity they belong to, and even where you live. These four things can give you a deeper understanding of your own culture. Cultural Aspects Of Cultural Identity Cultural identity varies from person to person and To me cultural identity basically means what kind of person you are and the way you see others. it plays a big role in life and there are lots of aspects such as religion, language, racial identity, values and gender. Those aspects define your cultural identity. One of the cultural aspects that I will talk about has impacted my life the most which is my religion and that religion is christianity. When I was one month old my parents took me to church for the first time so that I would get blessed by the pastor ever since I have been to church every Sunday where I would learn about the Lord, good vs bad and sing with the church and lots more and The way I act and think is because of what ... She even taught me how to do the laundry and wash the floors when I was young. They also taught me to always respect our guests and when we see them we say "pace" which means peace and we shake hands as respect. if we have food on the table to let them always eat first. then when they go home we will eat whatever is left. And if we are invited to someone's house after we eat we help them clean the dishes and wipe table as a sign that we thank them for the meal. • 19. Identity And Cultural Identity 1. Was it easy or difficult for you to complete the worksheet? In what ways was it easy or difficult? It took me a couple of minutes, but it was not so difficult, at my age I have very clear what is important to create my cultural identity. I'm 39 years old, mom, I have traveled, born in another country, met so many cultures, met so many with different sex orientation, religions, or education that I can place them in a priority level on this stage of my life easily. Many if I did 20 years ago, I will place them different from now. I identity myself as a mom, first than anything, so I relate well with other moms, education, abilities, and spirituality are very important for me. I prefer and tend to feel comfortable around happy people, people who are creative, it doesn't matter how much money they have but they manage to provide for their kids. People who are relax, free, don't judge religion, just accept people as people. Nationality, ethnicity, and relationality comes to be situational, depending where I am, I identify more the cultures, if I'm here in PA, or NY or Ecuador. I becomes important but it's situational, I don't think important where you were born or which is your ethnicity but more important your family values. And the least salient are age, sex, sex orientation and religion, I really don't judge, care, or think your age, sex, or sex orientation defines who you are. Research Paper On Cultural Identity What is cultural identity?...You may ask, Well in this essay i will be explaining not only what cultural identity means but i will also be giving some examples of some things that describe me and my cultural identity. Some examples of what makes me who I am are my hobbies, such as hunting, fishing and being with family. In my opinion i believe that cultural identity is how your cultural backgrounds reflect on the things that you do. Such as for me i was brought up hunting and fishing, these things were taught from generation to generation from the hawaiian culture. From a young age hunting is one of the biggest passion i have in my life but little did i know that this identified who i was and my culture. Such as my dad would always tell ... • 23. Cultural Identity Development Before we delve into how culture and society heavily influences our identity, we must consider what makes a society a society. In a sense, a society is expounded as a group of individuals who live under a particular ambiance and collaborate in the exchange of words while sharing common interests and aims amongst each other. The people of today have the fascinating ability to accumulate unique ideas that could potentially change the world as well as influence others into how they may think of themselves. I am drawn to the thought that in order for there to be change, there must be those who are willing to sacrifice. Unfortunately, there are some things that go sacrificed unwillingly but are condoned by the majority as the norm. The culture that we hold behind our identities often becomes distorted by outside factors such as our peers and the world around us. The moment we are born into this world, we are exposed to new stimuli on a daily basis. Things like friends and family have a huge influence on one's identity. Humans are naturally driven by the strong desire of belongingness within our communities and so we look for the fragments that develop our identities. For the most part, in order to know what stimulates the growth of identity development, we must comprehend how identity is developed. Then slowly it starts growing into our cultural identity over the multiple generations. As you probably know, there is a big age gap between your parents and your self. In the nowadays generation, the way we talk is considered to be rude to someone that is a lot older like In there 60 – 70. People from the older generation had specific ways a sentence was said. Another thing that shows a big generation gap is the music. Music has changed a lot from the 1900's, now having these famous Rappers like 21 Savage, Nav, Lil Uzi Vert. If a person from an older generation listens to this type of music they will most likely go crazy, because of the laughing they use. Not just music but also technology, the way technology is used has changed a lot from the last century, for example, the New "iPhone X" and the new "MacBooks" that are coming out with high–tech face scanners. • 27. Ethnic Identity And Cultural Identity Ethnic identity much like racial identity is difficult to clearly discern and delineate. As a social construct, it is an umbrella term that mark a group affiliation to a common origin, culture, religion, or geography; it consists of shared traditions, behaviors, values and beliefs. (Waters, 1990) Outlining the elements and components of ethnic identity, Phinney and Ong (2007) stress its multidimensionality and dynamism, it encompasses several cultural, linguistic, behavioral features as well as being developmental and involving a shifting process. They consider self–categorization, commitment, and sense of attachment to the group as vital constituents of ethnic identity. They show that "the process of ethnic identity formation involves the construction over time of one's sense of self as a group member and of one's attitudes and understandings associated with group membership" (2007, p. 275) Exploration and commitment are the two head titles in the revised model to measure the formation of identity across different groups (MEIM–R, Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure). The model proposes a set of questions that capture the individual's overall knowledge, understanding, engagement, sense of belonging and attachment to the social group. Minority groups in general have to encounter and deal with two fundamental conflicts due to their identification with the non–dominant group: first, stereotyping and prejudice of the dominating group which problematize their self–image. • 29. Cultural Identity Essay What is one without a cultural Identity? This is not possible, everyone of us has a cultural identity, they've just never realized it yet. People go on through their daily lives with little regard to who they are. Everyone of us has a cultural identity, but we are all very different. As for me, what am I? I know I am half–Japanese and half–Caucasian, which makes me a hapa, but deeper than that, what am I more than just my race? One of the most important elements to define your cultural Identity is to know who raised you. Whether it is your blood–parents or maybe a guardian. They've raised you to become the person you are today. All the things they do for celebrations, traditions, religion, etc as they raised you has become ingrained into your cultural identity. You may notice you do things differently from other people and that is because it is the way your family does things. I was born to a Japanese mother, and Caucasian (Irish, German, and Lithuanian) father and was also raised by them. My mother being full Japanese, all the things we do for celebrations, traditions, etc is directly influenced from Japanese culture. I even talk fluent Japanese and that is the main way I speak to my mom. She raised me for all my life, and made me who I am. My father was in the Navy so for the most of my life, I was missing a father figure until he retired in 2013. We aren't a strict religious household so there is really no religion I follow. • 31. Examples Of The Racial / Cultural Identity Development Model The Racial/Cultural Identity Development model (R/CID) is an expansion of the Minority Identity Development model. The R/CID model encompasses a broader population and removes the term "minority," which can be disempowering to individuals. This model works to aid therapists in assessment and intervention of culturally diverse clients. It has five levels of development that individuals undergo to understand the dominant culture, their own culture, and the relationship between the two cultures, which is often oppressive. The first level of development is the conformity phase. In the conformity phase, people are more appreciative of the dominant culture's characteristics over their own culture's values. In the United States, this dominant culture is the White American culture and serves as the reference group for those individuals in the conformity phase. Individuals can be in this phase without having a disdain for their own culture. Because the White culture is the dominant culture, individuals may conform to this culture in order to avoid feeling inferior. Within each of the five phases of the R/CID model, attitudes and beliefs are further broken down. For individuals in the conformity phase, the attitude and belief towards the self are characterized by negative views. Cultural and physical characteristics of the individual's own culture are unwanted and should be denied or changed. Attitudes towards members of the same group are also highly negative. The style of music went from ultimate fangirl of boy bands such as One Direction or Five Seconds of Summer, to listening to Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. Not only that, but I've also started to dig in with my ethnicity and started listening to spanish music on my own time. My experiences at parties and being around my family with them blasting banda sparked my interest to listen to spanish music. Listening to spanish music also helped with my spanish since unfortunately, I am taking french instead of spanish for my language course. These changes have made me love and appreciate both spanish and english music, which is an important part of my life. Social identity theory puts forward the idea that human beings possess their own perception/sense of belonging to a particular social group (Stets & Burke, 2000). According to Stryker, Hogg, Turner and other identity practitioners (Turner 1985, Stryker 1980, Stets & Burke, 2000) the 'self is reflexive' and represents a separate category which is embedded in self–categorization process and, in parallel, it is served as an object of classification which contrasts itself. They argue that a coherent sense of identity is formed through the process of categorization and identification (Stets & Burke, 2000). Earlier, Mead (1934) made a distinction between "I" and "me" which is labeled as a boundary between "self" and "identity". He believes that individual identity should be viewed as a sequential process which place the human beings in a specific time and space. Mead argues that there is a dialectical relationship between "self", society and the preexisting social structures. I am then part of the Latinx group. My ethnicity is belonging to a group where I share commonalities like language, history, and traditions. I fit in best with the Mexican American group. Being part of the Latinx community is much easier than being part of the Mexican American community because it 's a lot broader and many people can fit under this umbrella. The conflict with being part of the Mexican American group is not really being able to fit under Mexican culture or American culture. It is like a limbo type scenario. A familiar saying that many Mexican American youth say is, "Ni de aqui, ni de alla" translating to "not from here nor from there." As Latina woman of lower–class status my experiences have shaped me enormously. Within the Latinx culture the expectations between men and women are conflicting in today's views and movements but, my parents instilled the expectations that they also grow up in. As a Latina female, I grow up learning how to clean, cook, and take care ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Cultural Identity And Cultural Values Despite the centrality of culture in defining who we are, its definition continues to allude many. While some may see culture as the material relics of a certain group, such as food, dress art or language, others view it as the intangible beliefs and norms which govern our behaviour. Indeed, culture is a multifaceted and subjective construct that becomes internalized and therefore is a driving force in the formation of our unique identities. Cultural identity thus becomes an expression of our governing systems of kinship, ethnicity, race and religion, interacting with the social, economic and political world around us (Hall, 1995). In this way, cultural identity represents the extent we feel connected to and a part of a given cultural group. While identity formation is a fluid construct which is subject to evolution and influence, one could argue that people born to the dominant in–group experience a relatively smooth and unvaried transition into their sense of self. Conversely, first or second generation immigrants who have stake in two different worlds may find themselves hindered by conflicting values, practices and identities. Indeed, globalization has opened up the door for culture to flow between time and space and thus it becomes transferable (Hall, 1995). This transference has large implications for both racism and nationalism as overt differences between peoples can become a point of tension. As such, culture becomes a powerful concept with the ability to either ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a person's frame of reference by which he perceives himself. Identities are constructed by an integral connection of language, social structures, gender orientation and cultural patterns. As stated by communicationtheory.org, the theory suggests a relationship between inter–cultural competence and cultural identity. The theory deals with the study into how individuals use communicative processes to construct and negotiate their cultural group identities and relationships in particular contexts. According to the theory, culture is one of the many identities expressed in communication encounters. Cultural identity becomes evident through social comparison. Speakers compare the status position of their own groups to those of other groups. An individual's message during interaction will contain multiple cultural identities such as nationalist, racist, ethnic, class related, sex, gender based, political and religious. Because individuals enact multiple identities all voices within a group do not speak in the same way or have the same recognition by others. Early versions of the theory focused on an interpretative theoretical perspective (cultural identity processes were described not critiqued), social construction and individual discursive accounts of experience. Recent years have seen the shift to increased critical perspective–attention to contextual structure, ideologies and status ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. My Paper On Cultural Identity My paper was based on the first topic about how someone's life history can tell you about their cultural identity. The person I interviewed was a second generation 32 year old immigrant from Mexico. She is a very kind person, with such an adventurous personality. My plan was to ask several questions about her life, as well as what she has faced. This is so I can learn more from her and her culture. I asked a couple of questions about her life and practices to figure out how family and changes helped her adapt to what culture she identifies with growing up. My first heading will consist of her childhood growing up, the culture she grew up with and how her family plays the important part of her culture. My second will consist on her adult changes and her identity she has formed. I will then explain how her experiences have helped shaped her through her life and what she talks about during the interview as well as any other stories she would like to contribute. To begin with, she was born in Tijuana, Mexico. She was homeschooled after she finished middle school because her parents believed it to be better for her to remain home to teach her how they see fit. Her connection with her parents was not that good, but they still bonded during holidays and cultural traditions. She identifies with the American culture more than a Mexican culture, despite her mother being Mexican; she did not live a Mexican lifestyle or celebrated much Mexican holidays growing up. I thought this was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Identity: My Culture, Identity, And Cultural Identity My Cultural identity The pendulum in a grandfather's clock speaks to me the most. It swings back and forth between two sides, never truly belong in neither. Growing up, this is what I have always felt, whether it was my ethnicity, cultural identity, or my social identity encompassing my ideology and political opinions. It was a challenge, to say the least. My two drastically different worldviews were in constant conflict. Today, as an adult, I have come to the realisation that there was no need to limit myself within a label. I have the choice to be who I am, not whom I should be. To me, cultural identity is a person's sense of belonging to a group due to a shared similar set of beliefs, customs, values, tradition and views, opinion on certain topics. As I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I've just accepted whatever I get and have learned to be grateful for it. My mom recalled that a plastic hair band and a clip would entertain me for hours. However, there were times where I threw tantrums at my mother for refusing to get me a certain toy in which I would meet with a belt to the bottom or a slap in the face. These forms of punishments were widely accepted and encouraged at the time, both in households and schools. Religion was not a major part of my family, though my mother is a Buddhist and also extremely superstitious. This can even be seen in my Chinese name. The name "鑫" (Xin), a symbol composed of 3 characters for gold "金" was chosen after a fortune teller told her that I lack the "metal elements". Whatever that meant. Perhaps it was my mother's influence that I developed a rather open–minded attitude towards all superstitions. I had spent an unreasonable amount of effort to walk around ladders, avoiding black cats and tiptoeing around any mirrors present in the room. Some of these still remain with me today, though it had since become more of a habit like for example saying "Bless you" after someone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Culture And Cultural Identity Cultural identity is a feeling of belonging to a group based on ethnicity, social class, and etc. But along with cultural identities comes social barriers, which include a difference in race, gender, sexuality, language, religious group, age, and etc. When one is bound to culture, they receive a feeling of acceptance but have limited opportunities, in that they would be subjected in society due to discrimination. When one isn't bound to culture, they would have the freedom to create their whole path entirely without the constraints, but would have to find out who they are altogether. The narrator explains that her father, Chang, was born and raised in China but moved to Brooklyn at the age of 13 or 14. Because of the distance between him and his home country, he had a hard time fitting into society. She further describes that because he was separated from his culture he always wanted to go back to China, since it was where he grew up. As Nunez narrates the toll of being separation of Chang and his culture she expresses that "'He always wanted to go back. He always missed China.' But he was only ten years old when he left. 'Yes, but that's what counts–where you spent those first years, and your first language. That's who you are'" (Nunez 16). Because Chang always missed China and wanted to go back, it blinded him from present opportunities that led him to lead a sad life. Nunez uses the rhetorical strategy characterization, a method an author uses to develop characters in a work, to support her argument that because Chang was bound to culture he led a wistful life. Chang "always wanted to go back" to China because he missed his culture. Because "[h]e always wanted to go back," it proves that he never enjoyed his life because he was stuck on the things he couldn't have in his life. Also because he "missed China" since he "spent [his] first years" there, he was separated from his culture. Due to this he live life unhappily because he always reminisced about his past in ... • 77. Essay On Cultural Identity Culture identity development is an important part of every life due the emergence of self through primary and sociocultural contexts (Ecklund, 2016). These stages of development are made up of either a dominant or a non–dominant group and intersectional adaptation. More specifically, cultural identity is a self–construct where individuals share the same culture, which causes them to attribute themselves to that group (Ecklund, 2016). Being a part of the dominant culture in the United States has opened my eyes to the privilege and disadvantages of being a Euro–American female. Cultural coping strategies are the mental or behavioral actions that people use to navigate, manage their stress or dealing with a stressful situation (Ecklund, 2016). There are four types of coping strategies avoidance, activism, rationalization, and color consciousness. My own cultural coping styles include avoidance and rationalization. I am often aware of situations such as racism and more, but I avoid the topic because it is easier to me to now revolve an ever–ending topic. Furthermore, although talking helps individuals understand your stance, much like Martin Luther King Jr. it is a movement like that that can move mountains, but I do not believe I am such an advocate. I use rationalization when it comes to certain situations. Most often, when I am around others who are not of the same culture, leads me to adapt to the situation from prior knowledge.
