Together, they carefully control the proliferation of cells. However, if a proto oncogene is mutated, it
can become a carcinogenic oncogene, driving excessive multiplication. Tumor suppressor genes, on
the other hand, contribute to cancer when they are inactivated by mutation (Ruddon, 1995).
Luckily, cancerous tumors are not caused by one little mutation in one cell they are caused by multiple
mutations in a number of the cell s growth controlling genes. The number of mutations necessary can

away? Consider that one of your cells is damaged by poison and becomes mutated. In order for this
cell to turn into a cancer cell, the rest of the necessary mutations must also occur in this very same

Technology consuming our lives, making us so attached to it that a moment without it feels like we are
dying. We use technology to cure our epidemic of boredom with mindless activities like watching
videos or scrolling through social media. We are never really alone with our own thoughts; we always
have hundreds of people we can access at the press of a button. When my computer died a few years
back, I had nothing else to access my favorite websites, so I simply borrowed my parent s until I
bought a new one. Boredom, or solitude, felt so unusual for me; I had no clue what to do with myself.
I couldn t just sit there and be bored. Instead, I immediately filled that void with technology once
again when I could have just waited a few days for when I got my laptop. Even when I claim that I am
doing nothing, I still have headphones in or some video or show for background noise. I strategically
avoid the feeling of boredom all the time, and I immediately turn to my technology to do so.
Professor Sherry Turkle states in her essay, Solitude , that the decline of solitude has negative effects
on children s health, and technology is the cause. She discusses how time spent alone is essential for
developing certain qualities and skills as a child, such as empathy and creativity. Also, she goes over
how people are becoming addicted to technology, never leaving its side, and turning to it for
emotional outlets or getaways. She also mentions how parents are pushing this life style onto their
children. Turkle correctly concludes that solitude is an important part of childhood, and people today
turn to their phones instead of boredom.
According to Turkle, for a child to properly develop mentally, solitude is needed. As Turkle stated, It s
the capacity for solitude that allows you to reach out to others and see them as separate and
independent. ... This makes the capacity for solitude essential to the development of empathy (Turkle
61). By being in solitude, people notice themselves and how they are one person and capable of doing
things on their own. With that realization, a person would then be able to look at others and come to
the same conclusion that they too are independent from others, that they are not just part of a

About 3.3 billion people, that is about half of the world s population are at risk of contracting malaria
(figure 1). Every year there are 250 million cases of malaria, and nearly 1 million deaths. That
amounts to 2,732 deaths per day. Out of those million people that die every year, 800,000 of them are
African children under the age of 5. To control malaria three actions need to be taken: insecticides
need to be used to decrease the vector population, people have to be educated as to how to prevent the
vector from reproducing, and anti malarial drugs need to be distributed. To understand the vector and
what the vector is, scientists had to first discover what the parasite was and how it worked. It was not
until the year 1880 that French Physician Charles Laveran discovered that Malaria was caused by a
protozoan in the genus Plasmodium (Malaria, 2013)

Affluenza Anyone who kills innocent people should not be able to avoid jail just because their family
is rich. Ethan Couch a teenager killed 4 innocent people and injuring 2 of his passengers while driving
drunk. For his actions he was supposed to go to jail but instead got probation for being diagnosed with
affluenza. Which is when someone does not understand or control what they do simply because they
come from a rich family. Affluenza is not an acceptable reason for someone to avoid jail time because
he is old enough to know what was right or wrong and he is no different from any other kids. Some
