magazine is Q. Q is a popular music
magazine that publishes newspapers
once a month in United Kingdom. It is a
European based print media
organisation, founded in 1986 by Mark
Ellen and David Hepworth, who were
dismayed by the music press of the time,
which they felt was ignoring a generation
of older music buyers who were buying
CDs — then still a new technology. Q is a
highly popular music magazine as known
as one of the UK’s best and biggest music
magazines as it consists of music news
and reviews on many significant artists
and bands worldwide.
Ethos and Brand Ideology
Values: Bauer Media has 4 different company values which are ‘create, collaborate, challenge and respect
‘ these
Four values are very important because if people follow these values it can make you successful. The
value
• ‘create’ is important because it inspires people to go out and create something new and unique. The
value
• ‘collaborate’ pushes people to go out and get inspired by other peoples idea and work together to
become
• Successful. The word ‘challenge’ motivates people to face new challenges instead of doing something
normal..
• The word respect encourages other people to respect others and treat hem how you would like to be
treated.
History: in 1875 Ludoph Bauer laid the foundations for Bauer media with a business of card printing in
Hamburg.. As well as the printing of business cards Ludoph also had his own local advertising newspaper
calledThe Rothenburgersorter Zeitung. This was later on followed by Extrablatt am Montag and
Eventually in 1926 Rundfunk-Kritik. This was a radio magazine that quickly reached sales of over 500,000
Copies a week. H Bauer entered the UK scene with Bella magazine in 1987. Introducing a new format and
exciting service features, Bella made a significant impact on the women's market.
Circulation: 48,500 sales per month
The blue on the logo implies that Bauer media is
a worldwide company and the blue symbolises
the water on the planet which covers the
majority or earth which is connoting the
expanse of the company and where they reach.
The white in the writing on the logo
symbolises purity of Bauer and that they
only do things properly and they do not
provide the public with false information,
which is key for audience trust and loyalty.
Brand Ethos and Ideology
Slogan:
Bauer media has the slogan ‘we think popular. The slogan gives a
powerful implication of togetherness when the verbal code ‘we’ is
said, this is because it connotes that Bauer media isn't just one person
it is a group of people that work together to get the best possible
media out put they are capable of to the public. Furthermore the use
of the verbal code ‘think’ highlights to the audience that they don’t
just put anything out, they think of what the audience will like best
before publishing it. This is important because they want to satisfy the
customer when they look at Bauer media. Lastly the use of the verbal
code ‘Popular’ conveys to the reader that Bauer media only produce
articles that is the most popular and in fashion. This is essential that
they do this because if a media group produces things that people do
not like then the audience will not want to read or listen to Bauer
Media.
Brand Ethos and Ideology
Strapline:
The denotations of the strapline for Q music magazine “THE
WORLD’S GREATEST MUSIC MAGAZINE” connotes the
boldness and confidence of the brand. This is ‘signified’ (De
Saussure) by the actual writing being in bold and placed above
the masthead first on the page.
The denotation of the strapline being in black on the red
background makes it stand out as the house style used are red
and white so the fact its black lettering is ‘signifying’ (De
Saussure) the uniqueness of the magazine.
This is also connoting to the range the magazine is offering
and the verbal code ‘greatest’ implies it is above the
competitors.
Technological Convergence
Definition: the coming together of technology such as social media and print media to produce and
distribute a product such as a music magazine
Bauer media contacts their subscribers though many different ways such as Facebook, twitter and
various other media platforms. Because Bauer media is multinational conglomerate they also have
an email which is more professional and easier to use seeing as more people will have an email
address. This email is operated by a group of people in order to reply to more people.
As you can see in the figures to the right. Bauer media has a total sales of 44,050 sales in the year
2015. this is significantly smaller figures than other music magazines such as Mojo which sold
70,445. this is because Q magazine is aimed at a smaller audience so there is not a lot of people that
buy the magazine

Technological Convergence
Q magazine also has its own website which includes further exclusive content
that the print based media product do not contain. This is denoted in the
example and specifically the videos tab which takes you to interactive
information.
The website also offers and interview and playlist option allowing the
audience to actually hear the music and one to one contact with the artist or
band. This promotes the magazine’s uniqueness and confidence and allows
the readers more opportunities to be ‘informed and educated’ (Katz).

Technological Convergence
Q magazine offers a subscribe option which gives you exclusive membership and access
to information. It states you will never miss a issue and will receive Free next day

more data Q have on membership and building confidence with the readers as they are

Synergy
Bauer Media group can be found on twitter, as well as Q magazine. The use of
social media promotes not on the publishing group but also the brand. This is
because the younger audience is more accessible on social networking sites.
The media synergy with the social media encourages groups of readers and
builds a community of customers. This offers more ways for the audience to
access the company and also possible job opportunities.
https://twitter.com/QMagazine This is highly popular as
denoted through the 140
thousand followers. This
allows the information to
be more mobile and
interactive for the
audience. And allows the
audience to participate
and encourages
communication between
reader and brand.
Synergy
Q magazine has its own YouTube channel which is popular with its readers but
also passing audience, this is denoted through it 4,436 subscribers.
The links to the left
allow the audience to
view the information

The market position and
popularity took a drop
the beginning of the
century however they
have slowly increased
possible due to the
increase of pop music to
the magazine and more
iconic cover stories.
Wider coverage means
wider audience.
Year (January-June) Circulation figures
2011 80,418
2012 64,956
2013 58,980
2014 48,353
2015 44,050
Market Position - Circulation figures
As you can see from the figures the circulation of Q magazine has dropped till under
half in less than four years. This may due to the current economic climate and the
social context, as the price of living increases the value of commodities such as
magazine become less important.
However, this also may be due to the new technological convergence and by allowing
the audience to access this media on multiple media platforms it decrease’s the sales
and revenue of print based media. This is detrimental to this form of media but for
the brand its shows it is reaching a wider audience and therefore expanding business.
Operating Model
These people are the people who
own Bauer media and people
who help the company to run
smoothly. The hierarchy portrays
the importance of the role. The
creative aspect of the magazine
will be produced by lower roles
within the operation however
without these roles their would
be no product, but without the
higher roles there would be no
structure to the business. All of
these job roles work to better the
brand.

Contents of the magazine
The contents of the magazine include stories or interviews that
have been conducted different music artists. It contains reviews
of albums and concerts also it will have a main featured artists
together with other bands and musicians.
Contents pages will have the same layout as the front cover.
Layout is simple to make it easy for the readers to navigate from
the magazine. There is also a page that includes a letter from the
editor mentioning a little about the issue and hopes that the
reader will enjoy the magazine as well as whoever is involved in
the publication and their contacts. The Q brand identity is
constant on each page.
This is a page used to entice the audience in, to ‘inform and
educate’ (Katz Uses and Gratifications theory). The are given all
the key information in short snippets to make them aware of
what they receive by purchasing this issue.
The Q contents page is in the standard house style of the magazine, the reiteration of 3 set colours
creates continuity throughout the magazine and reinforces the brand identity. Only using 3 primary
colours also makes the reader focus more on the content. The inclusion of pictures relates to the
audience members who refer to visual stimulation rather than verbal.
Main Image: the use of the medium shot of the artist gives an impression of authority and that the person featured is
the most important in the magazine. The image takes over most of the cover and slightly overlaps the masthead this
gives Florence a sense of importance within this article but is also a common convention for music magazine front
covers. The use of this image captures the attention of the audience because Florence is looking into the lens and looks
like she is reaching out to the audience in order to pull them in to read the magazine.
Masthead: advertising the company
this is a bright red which stands out
to the audience. It is always good to
have an easy to remember logo and
in bright colours this is so the
audience can recognise the
magazine quickly when looking
through the magazines in a shop or
online. The use of the single letter
makes the masthead stand out
against competitors and also the
connotations of Q ‘Signify’ (De
Saussure) questions that the
audience may have about the
content, that the magazine is going
to answer within.
Cover lines: These are other
stories that are on the side of
the page normally right next to
the main image. This is to
show the audience a summary
of what is inside and what the
article covers. This also covers
the other aspects of the genre
of the magazine concealed
within the magazine, showing
the audience a wider view and
aspect of their chosen passion
of music.
Main headline: this is the main
story and what the magazine is
focusing on. It is in the biggest
writing and normally over the
main image to anchor it to the
page and to signal that it is the
focus of the magazine issue. The
use of a different style of font
brings a feminine aspect as the
artist is female to the magazine
and therefore appealing to a
wider audience.
Analysis of Q front cover
Strapline: This is the magazine
catchy slogan, this entices the
reader in and creates a sense
of loyalty but also makes it
connote the fact that this
choice in magazine is the best
and what you are receiving is
only the best information.
Drop capitals: The drop capitals are the large letters at the start of a piece of text. This
highlights to the audience where to start reading from and is a common convention for
magazine double page spread, the letter will be in the same font as the masthead creating
continuity.
Page number/ date of issue: this tells the reader what page this
specific article is on and it also tells them the date of issue so they
know if the magazine they are reading is the latest one out. This
creates brand loyalty with the audience and makes the magazine
simple to use.
Main image: this close
up image of Jay –Z
connotes that the
reader has a sense of
authority over Jay-Z and
it tells the audience that
he Is the main person in
this specific magazine.
The gradiented
background overlay of
the image is
unconventional
however in terms of the
magazine house style it
creates a sense of
continuity and is
connoting the magazine
is more important than
the infamous artist Jay-
Z. It also add setting and
mood to the artist
image creating a sense
of intrigue and
mysteriousness.
Pull quote: this is a quote pulled from the article to in courage
the reader to read the article. It is an interesting quote that
some people will be confused about so the reader will want to
read more about the article. This creates intrigue and therefore
‘Enigma Code’ (Roland Barthes) and anchors the article.
Brand identity:
the name of the
magazine is
placed in
certain places in
the magazine
for extra
advertisement.
It is also part of
a consistent
house style
which is always
a good aspect
to have In a

magazine.
Analysis of the DPS – Double Page Spread
Background: the background of the article
is simple and plain to make the lettering
stand out. The large J is
making it more
apparent who
the article is
about and
drawing the
audience’s eye
to it.
Form and style
Throughout the magazine Q has presented a simple yet
effective layout for all the pages. The main colors they use is
red, white and black, red being the color used to highlight
important information and also for the logo. Black being the
main font color and white as a type of background to help
the colors stand out to the reader. The logo ‘Q’ is simple yet
effective this is because it is very hard to forget and people
will always know the magazine after seeing it once.
Furthermore it conveys that the magazine is simple and easy
to read just like the logo is. This will entice the reader to pick
up a copy and read it. Q has also added the logo on every
page for extra product placement. On the front cover they
usually have the main person overlapping the masthead as a
sense of authority in the specific copy of the magazine.
Furthermore the person in the picture is normally directly
addressing the reader by looking straight into the camera.
This catches peoples attention when they are looking at
magazines in the store or just walking past. The dimensions
of Q magazine is 8 3⁄8” x 10 7⁄8” There is also options to
have the magazine as a digital copy, you can select this
option on the website when you sign up for a subscription

Production Process
Date of publication – firstly the thing to do it set up the date of publication. The date of publication is the date
that you want the magazine to be released to the public as a finished product. Once this date has been set you
have now got to have the magazine finished by then. This is also known as a schedule which is how you are
going to plan the production and when each process occurs
Managing the schedule – this is probably the most important step in the whole process. If the schedule is
managed properly the production of the magazine will be successful. The schedule should be made in such a
way that if there is a problem there should be a solution for it so the production process runs as smoothly as
possible. Also a well organized schedule will enable you to meet the deadline set. This therefore connotes that
the schedule is vital for a successful production.
Editorial and budgetary decision – The editorial decisions involve the magazine’s editorial team assembling
and deciding what topics will be covered in the next issue of the magazine. the editorial team essentially talks
about the various contents that will make up the magazine and decide what the final copy will consist of. Also
they look at the budget for the magazine and they work around it to make it within the budget.
Content Acquisition – the content acquisition is arguably the most important step because without the content
there cannot be any magazine in the first place. Therefore content is basically the number one priority. There
are two essential ways that content can be collected for the magazine. These are ‘in-house staff’ and ‘external
writers’ that are commissioned to write on topics that are specialist in nature
Source: http://www.music-production-guide.com/music-production-
process.html
Sub-editing – this is the next step to be taken. Sub editing focuses on one major thing, which is quality
control. If the media organization is big enough to have a sub-editor, then he is going to be responsible
for this job; if there is no sub-editor, then the editor does this job. This step involves the following
important things:
Page Layout – there is a team responsible for page layouts called the layout staff. Their job is to typeset
and layout the pages that make the magazine. They use very powerful Desktop Publishing programs such
as InDesign or PageMaker to get the job completed. It is at this stage that adverts from advertisers are
placed into the content.
Proofreading – once the magazine has been completed it is checked over a few times by a computer to
make sure there is no errors in the spellings of punctuation. It also checks if the layout is correctly
File emailed to printer – After the proofreading stage, the DTP file of the entire magazine is sent to the
printer whose job will be to print the magazine.
Distribution –The printing company, having finished with the printing of the magazines will package
them neatly and send them to a warehouse. From the warehouse, the magazines are then distributed
and then sold to the public.

Target audience
Katz’ theory: according to Katz Q magazine will ‘inform and educate’ the audience. This is through using interesting language and images in order to attract
the audience into reading the text. For example within the magazine it consists of interviews with famous people that are well known, the use of well
known celebrities attracts more people that are interested in the specific celebrity. Furthermore if Q magazine use well known people then people will
enjoy reading the article more, this is how the magazine is able to inform and educate the audience. The use of interesting images creates a diversion for
the audience because it is enabling them to sit and read an interesting magazine and escape reality for the duration of reading the magazine.
The target audience for Q magazine is a 31.7% to 68.3% female to male ratio. The target audience age range is
largely within the ages 15-24 years old and the second most popular age range is 25-34 years old. This is
because the magazine focuses on content aimed at the younger generation (15-34)
Hartley’s: Hartley's theory highlights that Q magazine should consider Age, gender, class, ethnicity, self-image, nation and family. They should make sure
that the magazine getting published is age appropriate to younger people whop read the magazine, this means no sign of gore or sexual images. It is also
very important that they consider different races before publishing the magazine this is because there might be some controversial language used that
might offend certain people because of their race or ethnicity. Another thing that it says s gender and self image. These are really important because there
might be contexts that could make people feel they are lower than other people because they are a male or female. Also people might look at their self
differently after looking at a model in an image
Maslow: Maslow's theory mentions 4 different potential outcomes for a reader after reading a magazine these are; social climbers, care givers, explorers
and survivors. Social climbers is when the audience are driven by improving their status in society. This is important because it gives the audience
confidence and a drive to do well in life. Caregivers is when the audience sympathies with the characters situation. This is important because it gives the
audience a chance to escape reality and be engrossed into a magazine. Survivors is when the audience members want security and routine. This is
important because they have security knowing that the magazine will be published on a set date.

Audience Theories
According to the socio
economic needs table the
Q audience would be in
the categories E/ D/ C2/
and C1. this is due to the
fact that the aged range
would be 16-30 therefore
the younger range would
not be employed and still
in education. The C1 and
C2 would be the mid to
high range of 21-30 who
would be starting careers
and fresh out of further
education.

Q competitions
By clicking on the competition you can enter to win a
prize and also receive the terms and conditions. This enticed the
audience in and makes the brand accessible. This also provides more
information to the audience on their interest and allows Q to gain
information on their audience based on the results.
Q awards
Once a year Q hosts an award ceremony to award
bands/artists who the general public voted for. This gives a line of
communication between the audience and the artist allowing them a
‘personal relationship’ (Katz) with the artist and therefore increases
loyalty and subsequently membership.
Q subscriptions
The subscriptions are available on a hard copy ( paper format), phone,
tablet or PC. A subscription allows the brand specific numbers on
audience and guaranteed sales. The subscription also allows the
audience to feel connected and important to the magazine and
encourages audience participation.

As shown previously where the print based media is
dropped in sales the technological convergence push
has increased dramatically. All the followers and
subscribers on the social media pages are audience
member invested in the brand and potential sales.
The modern element with this approach makes the
magazine more accessible and promotes
advertisement for free.
The social media pages also includes more
content and a wider more interactive format
for the audience. This means they can
receive up to date information on important
stories and more information around the
whole genre almost instantaneously. This
format also allows for different types of
media to reach the audience through those
of blogs and video’s not available in the print
based media product.
Advertisements to Consumers
218 people have viewed this
advertisement, this is a below
the line marketing and reach’s
a younger audience who enjoy
more interactive forms of
media. This advertisement is
on a new digital format but
advertising a traditional print

Advertising the brand also comes
into play within the product. To
stand out from the competitors
and be unique they have to
create unique selling points. One
being launches of a spin off
products that are original in their
own right but a continuation of a
previous product, such as special
editions.
Q magazine also
promotes the brand
to the consumers by
highlighting their
power and authority
within the industry. A
awards sponsored by

concept to the

Analysis of The Sun newspaper Front
CoverMasthead: the masthead is at
the top of the page almost a
title but its is key for the
brand identity. The Sun is a
red – top which is evident by
its red background. This
meaning that it is a tabloid
and therefore gossip and
informal.
Main image: the main
image is sitting tight with
the text so that it is clear
what the headline refers to,
this is giving a face to the
headline and anchors the
story to the page. This
image will not be primary
source but taken from
another situation.
Sub Headings: these are other
stories that the reader might
be interested in. it has a page
number so that the reader
can turn to that page if they
want to read it straight away.
Generally in a tabloid these
sub headings are unrelated to
the main story and generally
celebrity based.

recognizable person for the main image grasps the attention of
the reader. It has a black border so it connotes that something

— basically the size of an event indicates his importance
3.Unambiguity
— events do not have to be simple but they must be accessible to the public - i.e. simplified
by the media
4.Meaningfulness
— divided into two categories after Galtung and Ruge’s‘Familiarity’: a)
cultural proximity
in which the event agrees with the outlook of a specific culture; b)
Relevance where events will be reported and discussed if they seem to have an impact on
the ‘home’ culture, especially athreat
5.Consonance
— or ‘correspondence’ where the familiar is more likely to be thought than the unfamiliar
6.Unexpectedness
— or ‘surprise’ where it is the rarity of an event whichleads to its circulation in the public
domain; Dutton notes that the ‘newness’ of the event is usually processed through a familiar
context. It has to work with 4 and 5.
7.Continuity
— once a story achieves importance will be continued to be covered for some time
8.Composition
— this is to provide a sense of balance, gloomy news with good news, foreign with domestic.
9.Reference to elite nations
— events are more likely to be reported if they occur in the developed world; the threshold
system would apply for developing countries’ events to be reported
10.Reference to elite persons
— the famous and the powerful are more newsworthy than ordinary people
11.Personalisation
— events are seen as actions of people as individuals; an institution may be personalised by
reference to a prominent person within that organisation
12.Negativity
— bad news is good for the press and TV news; the threshold is much lower for bad news
than for good news

possible drop in

Represents partnership with supermarket. This is a business

Mrs. crunch is to help families save more money when doing
a big shop at Morrison's. The partnership is estimated to last
for 4 years. The shoppers are given advice on how to save
money on their family shopping. This is the first time that the
Sun has formed an advertorial partnership for readers. The
advertisement displays cash back offers.
The partnership started in 2014 and will last until the end of
2018.
This is based on the demographic of the audience being the
lower percentiale of the population ( C2DE) in relation to the
socio economic table and therefore in more need to these
advice and savings due to their lower class status and
income.

Advertisement to consumers
The Suns instagram and twitter have over 1.4 million followers combined. This means
that they are able to reach out to a lot of people that use their phones on a daily
basis in order to tell them about their product and what they have to offer in their
newspapers. This not only increases advertisement of the print based media product
but also promotes technological convergence in how the consumer can access the
brand through new technology.
Relationship between the newspaper
and the audience
In order to get the audience to read the newspaper they are using
a Pull Quote that entices them to read what is ‘free’ for them. The
large bold writing in ‘FREE’ stands out from the rest of the page
and catches the consumers eye immediately. Any offer advertised
will intrigue a consumer and as this is a tabloid based on the lower
demographic of audience this inclusion of a day out with family
and children appeals to their target audience.
To appeal to their other target audience they are using pulls in
order to get older people to buy the newspaper this includes
prize giveaways and free holidays to luxurious destinations. This is
offer a once in a lifetime opportunity all for the price of a
newspaper which makes it even more appealing.
Demographics
Adults in ABC1 will read a print newspaper whereas adults in C2DE will go
online instead. If you include print and online together the statistics show
the target audience for the sun is 20-65+ this is because the younger
generation is in the C2DE bracket being teens and young adults. The
newspaper appeals to this audience as it is a tabloid and covers sport and
contains images. However it also will appeal to the older audience as it
includes upcoming news and areas of politics. Additionally you can see the
age range is older online as it includes more celebrity gossip and sports
culture which are the interest of the younger audience. However, having a
print newspaper enables the older audience access to the paper.
Advertising to Consumers: TV Advert Example
Relationship Between the Magazine and Audience

After researching about how Q magazine advertise to their consumers I have found this
advert on the YouTube platform. The advert has only got 170 views even though it is not
posted by the actual Q YouTube account it is surprisingly low. This therefore shows that
YouTube is not Q’s strongest media platform and the majority of their consumers are
using bigger platforms. The videos on the right link to ACDC which are a very popular
band for the older generation so this therefore increases readership because people
watching ACDC are more likely going to stumble across the Q advertisement
National Express Partnership with Q
Relationship with the Advertiser
and the Publisher
In 2013 Q magazine partnered with National Express to help advertise the Reading and Leeds
festivals in August. The purpose of this was to create a connection with the magazine audience and
encourage them to go to the music events and suggesting that the best method of travelling to
these events is by National Express coach.
The idea of the advertisements of
this partnership was to give
readers the chance to win an
amazing experience when
travelling to either Reading or
Leeds on a National Express
coach.
Q Magazine released two whole page spread
advertisements that encourages readers to enter
the competition. Also there was lots of
advertisements online, newsletters and on all social
media site outlets.

Conclusion
In L01 I have covered key features of magazines
and newspapers and how the publishers
advertise their products to their audience. I
have highlighted their form and style, operating
models, double page spreads, front covers and
the relationship between them and the
consumers. I have also talked about their
production process and how they release their
product to their target audience around the UK.
Contents
In L02 I will be covering rough ideas that I have
created in order to make it easier for me to design a
magazine that looks similar to leading magazines in
the community. I will be asking peers for feedback
on my magazine so I can get ideas on what I can do
to improve the magazine to make it as best as
possible for the age range that it is targeted at.
Lastly, I will be highlighting the equipment and staff
I will need to make the product as good as possible
and will be showing the production process on how
it will happen day by day.

For the color scheme I am going to be
using bright colors this is because they are
a connotations for hip hop which is a
happy upbeat genre.
The three main colors that I will
be using are red and white.
This is because those colors are
joyful welcoming colors.
The target audience will be
15-20 year olds. This is
because hip hop is more of
a grown up music genre
because of explicit language
in some songs.
The content that is going to be implicated
into the magazine needs to be age
appropriate and appeal to the correct
target audience.

The images being used in the

The magazine will be released once a month. This is so the magazine contains
a lot of information that has happened in the previous month.
On every page there will be brand

will be in bright colors. This is so the

Magazine of Inspiration
Main image: the main
image is a mid shot of
Eminem. A mid shot is
when you can just see the
top half of the subject and
nothing else. the subject
(Eminem) is a well known
artist and will catch the
readers attention because
they will recognize his face.
A mid shot of the artists
reveals a sense of authority
in the magazine. This is also
conveyed in the masthead
this is because Eminem is
overlapping the masthead
which denotes that he is an
important person.
Masthead: the mast head is in two different colors and they are faded into one another. This makes the
the Masthead look more interesting and attracts the readers attention. The masthead is also in a very
bold font which stands out to the reader.
Cover lines: the
reason for side
headings is to give
the reader an idea if
what is in the specific
magazine article.
Main headline: the
reason for using a
pull quote on the
front cover of a
magazine is to
intrigue the reader
into reading the
magazine.
Coverline: Addressing
the reader this is
used to entice the
reader into reading
the article to find out
the answer.
Double page spread of Inspiration
Main image: a long shot camera angle of Bruno mars the reason for a long
shot is to help set the scene and reveal what is around the artist, this
therefore draws the attention from the artist to to other objects in the shot.
Brand identity:
the use of the
letter V is brand
identity for the
company VIBE.
The reason why
they do this on
every page in the
magazine is
because it
increases
advertisement of
the magazine and
helps with the
recognition of the
company.
Title: The use of this
Interesting title is
used to pull the
reader into reading
the extract . The
reason why it pulls
people in is because it
is using play on words.
Furthermore it is in
bold and large font
which catches the
readers attention.
Bold headings: bold headings are used to highlight to
the reader where another paragraph starts and what it is
about.
What I will repeat.
For my magazine I will be repeating the large image on the right hand side of the double page spread. It will be a long shot and have the
subject with another object. The reason why I will be doing this is because it makes the page look a lot more interesting and more
welcoming to read the extract. I will also be using play on words in the title and making it big and bold. This is because it catches the readers
attention and will intrigue them into reading the extract. Brand identity will also be used on the page like the VIBE magazine. This is because
it will give the magazine a professional look and will increase the advertisement of the magazine.
Drop capital: shows
reader where to
start reading and is
it the same font as
the masthead
creating continuity.
Genre
The genre for the magazines of
inspirations is hip hop/rap. This is
portrayed using the artists on the front
cover of the magazines. Eminem is one of
the best Hip hop/Rap artists in the world
and is a good selling point for the
magazine because a lot of people idolize
him in the music industry. Bruno Mars is
on the double page spread because he is
big in Hip hop especially for the younger
generation. This is what I want my
magazine to be like because these genres
are up and coming and are already starting
to be really popular especially in the age
range that I have chosen.
Form and Style
The form and the style of the magazine has to be professional and age appropriate
for the target audience. The Masthead and other bold titles will be in a bright color
so it helps with the recognition of the company. The masthead will be in a bold font
that is easily recognizable to the reader if they see it again in a shop.
Furthermore The main image will also overlap the masthead so the reader is aware
that the person in the picture is the main subject in the specific article of the
magazine. Throughout the magazine I will have product placement on the pages, in
places that the reader will see easily, this increases the advertisement and
recognition of the company.
Furthermore I will use interesting images that will incise the reader into reading the
magazine, I will also use interesting cover lines with well known artists so people will
want to read more about it. The colors that I will be using for Rythmn is red, grey
and black and for Beat I will be using yellow and black.

Proposal
My initial Proposal for the magazine
front cover, outlining all the aspects I
will be covering from format to genre
to style and approach to even possible
masthead ideas. This will be
informative to rely on when creating
my magazine and give clear focus on
how to develop the magazine but make
sure I meet the criteria I began with to
ensure it is focused and profitable.

The target audience for Vibe magazine is a
31.7% to 68.3% female to male ratio. The
target audience age range is largely within the
ages 15-24 years old and the second most
popular age range is 25-34 years old. This is
because the magazine focuses on content
aimed at the younger generation (15-34)
Adults in ABC1 will read a print newspaper whereas adults in C2DE will

I think the fonts that I have chosen are good, this is because they are simple and very easy to read and comprehend.
This is useful because the person wants the mast heat to be interesting and easy to read. The fonts that I have
chosen are suitable then because they are bold and eye catching to people and they look professional, on addition it
fits the genre of choice which is Hip hop.
Masthead ideas
On this mind map I have analysed all the aspects that the Masthead should meet before the
magazine is produced. The aspects include things like: eye catching, original colours, unique
font styles etc.…
The reason for planning in advanced and especially for the Masthead is because it is the first
thing that the audience will see, it is the identity of the brand and it needs to stand out against
its competitors making it easy for the reader to recognise.
Masthead for Beat
COLOUR
SCHEME
FONT
Connotations behind BEAT
Style
Monochrome and a
primary colour
Beat is a term with music creation, Hip-hop
primarily relies on beats to create the song.
This masthead directly indicates the genre the
magazine will fall into.
Connotations behind Rhythm
Rhythm is a term used within the music
industry to describe the feel of the music. This
masthead relates to the genre of the
magazine being Hip-Hop a well know music
taste.
The font style needs to be in keeping with the genre of music
therefore will be using DaFont to select the most appropriate
block typography that is clear and easy to read and also works
in colour.
This will allow the primary colour to
stand out and therefore the categorize
the information into most important.
Connotation behind
colour Yellow
Happiness, upbeat,
strong, shine,
standout.
House Styles for Beat
The house style for BEAT magazine is monochrome and yellow. This is
because the two colours contrast well and they look good when there is
an even amount of each colour on a page. The yellow will be used for
key information such as Masthead and Headlines, whereas the white will
be used for additional information; cover lines and barcode.
This colour scheme will be carried out throughout the whole magazine
to show that it has a consistent house style, creating a brand identity and
continuity. This also appeals to the target audience who will identify with
this consistent style but also passing by audience who will be intrigued
by the magazine that stands out the most against competitors.
This colour scheme is new for this genre of music magazine with the
closest house style being Billboard who use a range of colours. This is
due to the gender neutral colours and the connotations of yellow being
happy. The synergy created with the social media icons allow the
magazine to use technological convergence to widen the audience and
use below the line marketing to promote their product. This should lead
to more readers and consumers as well as overall publicity. The icons
could possibly be altered to fit the house style with Photoshop skills to
change them to yellow.
House Styles for Rhythm
The house style for Rhythm magazine is monochrome and red. This is
because the two colours contrast well and they look good when there is
an even amount of each colour on a page. The red will be used for key
information such as Masthead and Headlines, whereas the white will be
used for additional information; cover lines and barcode.
This colour scheme will be carried out throughout the whole magazine
to show that it has a consistent house style, creating a brand identity and
continuity. This also appeals to the target audience who will identify with
this consistent style but also passing by audience who will be intrigued
by the magazine that stands out the most against competitors.
This colour scheme is popular for this genre of music magazine with Q
and NME adopting this house style. This is due to the gender neutral
colours and the connotations of red being passion. The synergy created
with the social media icons allow the magazine to use technological
convergence to widen the audience and use below the line marketing to
promote their product. This should lead to more readers and consumers
as well as overall publicity. The icons could possibly be altered to fit the
house style with Photoshop skills to change them to red.
Graphic layouts for Front Cover
The Graphic Layouts are two options for
my magazine front covers. This is giving
me a clear indication of where to place
my different magazine conventions.
These layouts are based on my
inspiration VIBE, as this is a popular
magazine in the genre of music I am
using, this therefore gives me a good
indication of what my target audience
except and like.
Personally I prefer the graphic layout on the left as it is clear and easily readable. Certain
conventions will always remain in the same position and this is evident in the inspiration
magazines. This will include masthead in the top left, barcode bottom right ( including
price; issue date and number; website address and social media links) this is due to the
visibility from a distance and the value of the information. The right graphic layout includes
more information and could be adapted to be more clear but will attract a wider audience
who want to be ‘informed and educated’ (Katz).
Graphic layouts for DPS
This graphic layouts are depicting what my
Double Page Spread design and page layout
will be. This makes it easier when creating
my page as I am assured all the conventions
are included and the layout is popular with
my target audience.
The layout will remain similar in the
common conventions. The placement of the
title/Headline of the artist in the top left,
and the page being split in text and image.
The inclusion of a advertisement will be
related to the artist featured and
encourages the reader to read the
article/information about picture. The will
always be a page number at bottom of both
pages.
Rough sketches- FRONT COVER OF MAGAZINE
The Masthead is advertising
the Brand of the magazine,
located at the top of the page
to draw the audience’s eye,
bright and simple consisting
of a few letter.
Cover Lines covering more of
the content within the
magazine and offer more
information from across the
whole genre. These will cover
all aspects of the magazines
genre to ‘Inform and Educate’
(Katz) the audience on the
whole genre, enticing them to
purchase and read on.
It is essential to have a Barcode
visible on the front cover, this
includes the price the magazine,
the issue number, and social
media connections. I have
located the barcode at the
bottom of the page to not
distract from main cover and to
be easily scanned for the
company’s selling the product.
Main Headline introducing the
star on the main image and the
double page spread that is inside.
Enticing the reader to purchase
the magazine to read on,
persuasive pull quote taken from
the interview captures their
attention and creates continuity
throughout the magazine.
A Puff Promotion is encouraging
reader participation as they will
have to enter the competition.
Also, offers their audience
something for free if they win
which is related to the genre of
the magazine encouraging
purchases as the reader will want
to own the prize.
Strapline is always placed
below the masthead, catchy
slogan unique to the brand and
remember able by readers.
Social Media icons included in the barcode to
promote technical convergence but also
promote the brand’s franchise and encourage
audience participation
Main Image will cover the
background and layered under all
verbal codes. This is first glimpse
of artist within so has to be bold
and mysterious.
The centrality of the Main Image is because it
grasps the attention of the reader. It must relate to
the text and will be a mid shot or long shot,
differing the image from the front cover.
The Headline is bold at the top of the page, this is advertising
the main story or artist. This introduced the content of the page
and ties the image and text creating clear strong anchorage of all
the information.
I have added the Logo
on this side of the page
so that it increases the
advertisement of the
magazine company
reinforcing the brand
identity and continuity.
Interview - This
interview will be
introducing the artist,
outlining what
upcoming events they
have, how the joined
the music industry
and their music. This
format allows the
reader to personally
connect with the
subject and give gain
direct knowledge
about the subject.
There will be a Pull Quote
in the middle of the text
taken from the interview.
To enticed the reader to
There is an Addition
Section the bottom of
the page for other
photos to do with the
main Image. This
gives the reader a
variety of images of
the artist and add
more content behind
the genre of music.
Rough sketches- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Drop Capital will be
at the beginning of
the interview to tell
the reader where to
begin from. Will be
the first letter of the
interview this will
also be in the
masthead font to
create continuity.
Social Media beneath the interview to encourage
reader to use the other media platforms of the
magazine to gain further knowledge. Also, a
sentence encouraging reader to view whole
interview on a Facebook and website page.
Page Numbers on
both sides of the
double page spread
along the spine side by
side will allow readers
easier access to the
information.
Finalsketches
These are the final sketch layouts that I have chosen as a base for the magazine Front Cover and Double Page Spread. This is due to
the spaced layout therefore easy accessible to read. It also is a simple design, based from other popular magazines of this genre
and therefore is appealing to the reader visually. It includes all the conventions of a music magazine and will be focused on the
content within the pages which is what the reader wants to be ‘informed and educated’ (Katz) and ‘Personally identify’ (Katz) with
the information.
As denoted in the final sketch of the front cover I would have the masthead at the top of the page for clear visibility and the main
image as the background in the center of the page to make sure the audience know who is being featured, similarly the same
reason my headline is centrally positioned. I would use puff promotions and social media to expand the consumer ship. The
additional cover lines of related content will be to the left side of the page over laying the main image to highlight the variety of
content within.
The double page
spread as denoted by
the final sketch will
include the masthead
to create continuity
and brand
identification. The
usual conventions of a
double page spread
such as drop capitals
and pull quotes will
also be included to
entice the readers in
and the text and
image will be separate
to make the page
appealing as other
magazines format is
similar.
Draft Interview
Hello How are you?
Very good thank you
Just wondering if you would answer a few questions that the members of public would want to know?
yes of course I'm always happy to answer the questions that my fans have prepared to ask me, it lets them know more about myself
and my life.
When growing up was Hip Hop always your favorite genre of music?
Yes, it was. I always thought that it was an interesting type of music and I never got bored of listening to it. I listened to it whenever I
had the chance.
How long have you been in the music industry?
When I made my first album I was 17 years old, that means I have been in the music industry for 7 years.
Did you always want to be in a famous band?
Ever since a young age I always had a dream of preforming in a band in front of thousands of people, I always liked to preform in
school productions and I loved the adrenaline I got from being up on the stage. However it was never the same as being in a band at a
concert which was a true dream of mine.
Who is your inspiration in life? Who do you look up to?
I don’t have a specific idol as such, I get inspiration from other people in the same industry as me. They motivate me to contribute as
much as I can to the music industry.
What do you think got you into music?
Since a young age I was always in a good mood when I listened to music, so I have loved music since about the age of 5
When did you find out that you had a talent?
When I was about 15 years old, my mum overheard me singing and said that I am a very good singer.
What were your thoughts when you started getting recognized in public by fans?
I was emotional because since I was young I always wanted to be famous and when I got recognized I was overwhelmed with
excitement.
Have you got any targets for your success in the future?
Yes, I would love me and my band to be top in the charts.
Test Photography and Prop List
The clothing against the night background worked well as the colours stood out. There were no requirements for hair and makeup but the
costume was key to represent the genre of music and allow the audience to identify with the subject.
The only problem that occurred during the filming was the lighting as this was taken at night and relied on street artificial light that wasn’t
controllable. This was not taken into consideration within the photography plan however the resources that solved this came from
components that were planned for. Using the flash setting on the camera and headlights from the transport allowed enough light to gain a
strong photo.
The point of the photography plan was to make sure every aspect of the set was covered
form costume to setting. This was a good guide building to the day to make sure that
everything needed was prepared and any problems had solutions.

Equipment Costs
This camera is all the photographer will need because it is a good quality and simple to use camera. The cost of this

For the computer the employees will need something that is easy to edit the magazines on and has the software that
best suits the job role they will be carrying out. For this I have chosen an ‘IMAC’ this is because they are what is
commonly used in the industry and support the applications for editing. The cost of one IMAC will be £1,049.00 I will
need 9 of these for all the employees so it will cost £9,441

for the location. It will cost £495 per month
for one person. I will only be renting the
office for a couple months (only for the
duration of making the magazine. This
means it will cost £8910 for the 2 months
for everyone.

Cost of printing
I will be printing 200 copies of the magazine when the magazine is first released for
the first time to the public. This is so I know how many people roughly want to read
the magazine every month and will give me a rough estimate if I need to order more
copies in the future.
The cost of printing 250 copies of the magazine will cost £290.81

• For the photographer I will get a sixth form student as a trainee and pay
them £100 a week so £400.
Advertising revenue
My main source of income for the magazine will be coming from the advertisements
within it. I have managed to get hold of the advertising costs from my magazine of
inspiration which is Vibe. These rates will give me a rough idea for my magazine.
In addition another source of income for the magazine is giving people chances to win
items using puff promotions that can be dotted around the magazine. If the person for
the magazine which will therefore increase the amount of people reading the
magazine and eventually end up with a larger profit.
Sales revenue
Sales revenue is the main source of income when it comes to
selling the final product.
Vibe magazine sell their magazines for around £1.60 per
magazine in the UK. I am going to price my magazines at that
price because it isn’t a lot of money to the average UK citizen
and it will therefore mean that a lot more people will want to
buy it because it is not too expensive to spend that every week.
Vibe £1.60
Rolling Stone £4.95
Kerrang £1.88
NME £2.20
Q £3.70
Subscription revenue
The cost for a subscription for Vibe
magazine is at a minimum, £9.95 . that is
for 6 issues. I will be basing my subscription
costs at these prices as they are reasonable
prices and the customer will be more
intrigued to buy the subscription because
they will end up saving money.
Role of relevant regulatory bodies
The Independent Press Standards Organization (IPSO) is the independent regulator
for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. We hold newspapers and
magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high
standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press.
• They make sure that member newspapers and magazines follow the
editors code
• They investigate complaints about printed and online material that may
breach the Editors’ Code. https://www.ipso.co.uk/about-ipso/
For my personal magazine I need to ensure that the editors code is not breached in any
way. Making sure everything is factual and any information commercially sensitive will
be brought to the regulators attention for judgment so the content can be released
respectively. My magazine will need to deal with any possible complaints, using the
ISPO website where the company can see the complaints and follow the procedure to
deal with them.
Copyright
When using other images it is important to check if there is any
copyright regulations on the photos. When creating the pages I
avoided using copyrighted images so I did not have to worry
about asking for permission to use the images, as I used my own
primary imagery owned by the company.
Watermark
Content that has a watermark over it is usually copyrighted and
can be referred to as IP (intellectual property) and this is
protected by the law. IP allows the owners and trademarks to
benefit from their own work and investment. This is important
in my own work as all content will be orginial and needs to be
protected. Also IP on printed work, I will secure a digitial
watermark which protects any copyrighted content of my
magazine online and on social media.
Putting on a watermark is a good idea if you do not want
people to copy one of your photos. This is because it is hard to
Photoshop the watermark off without the picture looking
warped or bad.
In the image it shows that I have inserted a watermark on my
image to avoid people using it in their work. This is be covered
on all images faintly to protect the work of the magazine.
Data protection act 1988
The The Data Protection Act controls how your personal information is used
by organizations, businesses or the government. Everyone responsible for
using data has to follow strict rules called ‘data protection principles’.
https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/the-data-protection-act
As well as protecting my personal companies content the Data Protection Act
protects any personal information. This includes any person working for the
company and all business transactions. This is due to the sensitive
information kept on record and protects someone’s personal life and financial
security. For my magazine I need to be sure this is carried out for the safety of
my employee's but also that all staff are made aware of the health and safety
act, for example printing workers will be shown how to use the machinery
safely to protect them from health issues.
Primary Research
I have designed a
questionnaire that will enable
me to get constructive
feedback on my magazine that
I have sent them it asks the
audience questions like ‘what
is your favourite aspects’ and
also questions like ‘what would
you change about it’ this way I
am able to see what people
enjoy about the magazine and
what people would want to be
changed in the future.
Question 1
Question 2
Question 3
Question 4
Location recce
Location time and date The location was near an urban area late on a winter
night. This created an urban look and a kind of spooky
atmosphere to the photograph. This also meant
location fees weren't an issue as this is public land. The
use of natural lighting for effect makes the image more
relatable and realistic.
Props / Equipment The only props I used was clothing. I used a brand of
clothing that is well known in the hip hop/rap culture.
This makes the photo more suitable for the genre of
magazine that I have selected, and makes the artist
more relatable to audience.
Permission There was no permission needed because the photo
was taken of a colleague.
Potential hazards The only potential hazards was traffic whilst taking the
photo it was late at night so luckily there was no cars or
pedestrians, but high visability clothing was used for all
cast members.
Conclusion
In this section I have covered rough ideas I had for the
magazine and all the images that I got inspiration from in
order to make it. I have also covered things like the color
scheme of the products and the layout that I will most
likely have for the final design. In addition I have
highlighted the production process of the final product
and added in the aspects like the interview and the
images that I will be using on the DPS. Furthermore there
is information about the equipment I will be using and
the job roles for the different people helping out in the
manufacturing of the product. Lastly I have peer feedback
that I can use to change and alter my work to make it
better.
Contents
In L03 I will be highlighting the photo shoot plan
along with all the equipment and props that will
be used in the process. I will be pointing out the
form and style of the magazines that I will be
making and will be showing the flat plan of the
whole magazine as if I was creating the whole
thing. Furthermore there will be information on
the equipment, production plan, step by step
guide and the tools I used to make the magazine
images look as best as I could.
Project The denotation of the Masthead Beat connotes that the
information in the magazine is going to inform the user about
music and the artists that produce them. If a magazine is up
beat it means it will be a positive magazine to read for people
who enjoy listening to music.
Project description For the project I will be analyzing my magazines of inspirations
double page spreads and front covers. I will also be looking
into how they advertise these magazines and the techniques
they use to do this.
Photographer For the photos I had another class member named ‘Jonathan
Carter’ be the photographer. This allows me to focus on the
look and model.
Reference images and ideas The idea to take the photos came from the
images displayed below when completing
a test photography shoot.
Casting The cast used for this was myself and Jonathan (the
photographer). This allowed less pressure on the day and was
easier to work together to achieve the best shots.
Photography Plan
Model requirements The model has no specific requirements, however
a range of photos or varying shot types and angles
need to be taken to and variety to the front cover
and double page spread images.
Wardrobe requirements For the wardrobe requirements the clothes have to
be relevant to the genre of magazine. For the
clothing it was ‘Puma X Trapstar’ which is popular
fashion brand for the grime/trap scene
Appearance in the photo Along with the correct clothing the posture and
facial expression used for the photo needs to look
relevant to the type of music in the magazine. This
was connoted by the attitude portrayed and the
slightly hidden face.
Hair and makeup The was no hair and makeup requirements in the
photos because the model’s attire included a hat,
which is typical of the genre. Also the shoot was at
night therefore makeup and lighting was not
needed also.
Where and when The location for the photograph has to be an urban
background because it is a representation of where grime
originated from. It also would help if it was dark so it
adds effects to the photo.
Location recce
Location time and date The location was near an urban area late on a winter

Potential hazards The only potential hazards was traffic whilst taking the

cast members.

For the advertisement of the magazine
I will be using mainly social media like
face book, twitter and other platforms
like instagram to promote technological
convergence.
The reason why I will mainly advertise on
these social media platforms is because a
major percentage of the worlds population
use these or have used them in the past.
This means that if I advertise on these a lot of people will
be able to see the magazine and therefore will bring
more people to read about the magazine. Also being
below the line marketing/ viral marketing this is allowing
free advertisment therefore cost of marketing will not be
taken from the budget.

However, it was never the same as being in a band at
a concert which was a true dream of mine.
Who is your inspiration in life? Who do you look up to?
I don’t have a specific idol as such, I get inspiration from other people in the same industry as me. They motivate me to contribute as
much as I can to the music industry.
What do you think got you into music?
Since a young age I was always in a good mood when I listened to music, so I have loved music since about the age of 5.
These questions and answers are to be used in my double page spread and is all content surrounding my featured artist, who is the
main focus on the front cover, from first person response. I will be using my inspiration as a format as the simple colours make is
appealing to read the content and the photography is in keeping with the artist.

Front Cover plans
These are the plans that I made for the front cover to look like. I did two, one on
the computer and one hand drawn so I can edit it how I want the front cover to
look like when I make it. This layout and design was key in making the final
product to remain try to the general layout of a music magazine and ensure all
magazine conventions were included. This was a excellent tool to refer back to
and the final product is a close copy to the original designs.
Final Front Cover BEAT
This is the final front cover. It is similar
to the plans in the way of the main
image and the masthead being laid
out. I have altered somethings
compared to the plan because some
things fitted better in different places
for example the barcode being on the
bottom left side rather than the
bottom right side. Also my design
were changed slightly from the
feedback I received through the pitch
and survey monkey and I have
adapted the product to my audience’s
likes and dislikes. This was vital in
making sure my product is profitable
and appeals directly to the target
audience.
Feedback on Front Cover
The feedback that I got was
really detailed and helped me a
lot with what I should change on
the magazine to make it better
overall and more enjoyable for
the audience. Furthermore, it
gave me an idea of what the
peers liked about my magazine
and what I don’t have to
change. This was key to making
sure that the magazine was
appealing to the target audience
and therefore will be profitable
on sale. This feedback was
generally detailed and outlined
exactly what the opinion was of
the magazine, the constructive
critism was what was used to
inform the corrections.
Step by step for the front covers
• The first thing that I did was select the background color of the magazine and the size of the
page. This would be the base of the whole front cover so I needed the color to be dark so the
lighter colors would stand out more
• The next thing I did after this was made the masthead, I used a font style of my choice off of
the website DAFONT. I downloaded the font and used the text tool in order to insert it onto
the front cover. I used to font style for the cover lines also so it looked professional and
consistent.
• I used the ruler tool to make everything in line and to make it look professional and neat.
• After I selected the image I wanted to use for the font cover I used the quick selection tool in
order to cut around my silhouette, this helped me to completely get rid of the background in
the image and use the background that I selected in the first step of making the front cover.
• In order to resize the image so it looks better on the page, I dragged the ouse to the top
right/left of the image, held down shift and resized it, holding down shift made sure that the
image would not get warped whilst im resizing it and therefore making it look stretched or low
quality.
• After I added in the photo and the cover lines and I was happy with it, I added in the barcode
that I found offline. I added in social media logos that I resized in order to fit into the box that I
made for the barcode at the bottom left of the page.
• In addition I also added in a date of issue to make it look more professional and to inform the
reader of when the magazine was issued.
Step by step for the Double Page
Spreads.
• The first thing that I did was select the correct dimensions for the double page spread and
make sure that the page was the correct size.
• Secondly I typed up the interview into word and organized it how I wanted it on the
double page spread.
• After that I made text boxes on the double page spread ready for the interview and then I
inserted the interview into them and made sure everything was correctly spelt and it
looked professional.
• I then added in the photograph that I had taken and edited ready for the doable page
spread. I used the resizing tool in order to make it fit neatly onto the page.
• I added social media logos and links onto the bottom of the page so people are reminded
that they can find the magazine on the social media platforms displayed.
• On top of the interview I added the pull quote from the front cover so the reader knows
the article is related to the front cover
• Finally I added in drop capitals so the reader knows where to start reading and then I
added in the page numbers and a web adress so the reader knows what page they are on
and they are also shown how to access the website of the magazine.
Safe Working Practises
Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. Often referred to as HASAW or HSW, this Act of
Parliament is the main piece of UK health and safety legislation. It places a duty on all
employers "to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at
work" of all their employees.
http://www.healthyworkinglives.com/advice/Legislation-and-policy/Workplace-Health-and-
Safety/health-safety-legislation
The Health and Safety at work act (HSWA) has 13
separate headings and 10 schedules. These
include, general duties, penalization, co-operation.
These general duties can apply to the employee
themselves and anyone else affected by their
actions. It is law to work in an environment where
health and safety is controlled and regularly
checked by a manager/ supervisor.
Environment of Presentation
I have taken a few photos of the classroom environment where my presentation took place in. I presented the
presentation on a whiteboard which was situated in the middle of the classroom so the audience that I was
presenting in front of found it easy to watch the presentation. I also used a slide changer for the presentation.
This is because I could stand away from the whiteboard and control the slides without getting in the way of the
presentation. To record the presentation I used a Nikon camera. To hold the camera I also used a tripod to
keep it steady.
The classroom that my
presentation took place in
The remote that I used to change
the slides on the presentation.
The camera used to record the
presentation
The tripod I used to hold the
camera in a steady position
Evidence of Pitch and placement of me in relation to the enviroment
Materials Used
The materials that I used was an interactive whiteboard and a laser pointer on
a slide clicker. This made it easy for me to conduct my presentation as
professionally as possible. To film the presentation for evaluation I used a
DSLR camera that was mounted on a tripod for a steady and professional
video. This equipment allowed for a professional pitch and was industry
standard. This was a good way to gain constructive feedback in a controlled
environment.
Pitch feedback
The yellow highlighted words are the areas that I need to improve on and the green
highlighted words are areas I did well in. The yellow area’s will inform my corrections and
changes, whereas the green will remain the same as my audience were happy with them.
Equipment Costs
This camera is all the photographer will need because it is a good quality and simple to use camera. The cost of this
‘cannon 700d’ is £569.99 there will only need to be one camera because there is only one photographer. Lenses and
memory sticks will be purchased as need after the initial test photography.

best suits the job role they will be carrying out. For this I have chosen an ‘IMAC’ this is because they are what is
commonly used in the industry and support the applications for editing. The cost of one IMAC will be £1,049.00 I will
need 9 of these for all the employees so it will cost £9,441

Equipment Cost
Office space outside London £891,0
Apple IMAC x9 £9,441
Cannon 700d camera £ 569.99
Printer £79.99
Stationary pens/paper £34.99
Office furniture (chairs and desks) £ 1508.95
For the office space I have selected an office
in central London that is reasonably cheap
for the location. It will cost £495 per month
for one person. I will only be renting the
office for a couple months (only for the
duration of making the magazine. This
means it will cost £8910 for the 2 months
for everyone.

-bridge
Cost of printing
I will be printing 200 copies of the magazine when the magazine is first released for the first time
to the public. This is so I know how many people roughly want to read the magazine every month
and will give me a rough estimate if I need to order more copies in the future.
The cost of printing 250 copies of the magazine will cost £290.81

Cost of having staff
• The yearly salary for a person editing a magazine is roughly £40,000.
https://www.indeed.co.uk/jobs?q=magazine+editor&l=london
• The average yearly pay for a publisher is £38,259
https://www.indeed.co.uk/jobs?q=magazine+publisher&l=london
• The average pay for a journalist is
£23,000https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=journalist+salar
y&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&gfe_rd=cr&ei=dgerWJrMG6Wn8weblrTYBw
• For a writer £37,470 is the average pay.
https://www.indeed.co.uk/jobs?q=writer&l=london
• For the photographer I will get a sixth form student as a trainee and pay them
£100 a week so £400.

  • 1. OCR – Level 3 Cambridge Introductory Diploma in Media Unit 30: UK Media Publishing P1 and P2 Evidence Name: Will Bekker Candidate Number: 3013 Center Name: St. Andrew’s Catholic School Center Number: 64135
  • 2.
  • 4. Publisher of Q magazine Bauer media is Europe’s largest privately-owned media group. Bauer media was Founded in Hamburg in 1875 and now in its fifth generation of ownership in the family. the Bauer Media Group is in 19 countries including the UK, Germany, Poland, Australia, New Zealand and the USA and has 11,000 employees worldwide. The group is run in Germany where it accomplishes a collection of over 600 magazines, 50 radio/ TV stations and over 400 digital products around the world. This conglomerate also owns the music magazine Kerrang and over 80 over media brands across the world. The denotation of the name of the magazine is Q. Q is a popular music magazine that publishes newspapers once a month in United Kingdom. It is a European based print media organisation, founded in 1986 by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth, who were dismayed by the music press of the time, which they felt was ignoring a generation of older music buyers who were buying CDs — then still a new technology. Q is a highly popular music magazine as known as one of the UK’s best and biggest music magazines as it consists of music news and reviews on many significant artists and bands worldwide.
  • 5. Ethos and Brand Ideology Values: Bauer Media has 4 different company values which are ‘create, collaborate, challenge and respect ‘ these Four values are very important because if people follow these values it can make you successful. The value • ‘create’ is important because it inspires people to go out and create something new and unique. The value • ‘collaborate’ pushes people to go out and get inspired by other peoples idea and work together to become • Successful. The word ‘challenge’ motivates people to face new challenges instead of doing something normal.. • The word respect encourages other people to respect others and treat hem how you would like to be treated. History: in 1875 Ludoph Bauer laid the foundations for Bauer media with a business of card printing in Hamburg.. As well as the printing of business cards Ludoph also had his own local advertising newspaper calledThe Rothenburgersorter Zeitung. This was later on followed by Extrablatt am Montag and Eventually in 1926 Rundfunk-Kritik. This was a radio magazine that quickly reached sales of over 500,000 Copies a week. H Bauer entered the UK scene with Bella magazine in 1987. Introducing a new format and exciting service features, Bella made a significant impact on the women's market. Circulation: 48,500 sales per month The blue on the logo implies that Bauer media is a worldwide company and the blue symbolises the water on the planet which covers the majority or earth which is connoting the expanse of the company and where they reach. The white in the writing on the logo symbolises purity of Bauer and that they only do things properly and they do not provide the public with false information, which is key for audience trust and loyalty.
  • 6. Brand Ethos and Ideology Slogan: Bauer media has the slogan ‘we think popular. The slogan gives a powerful implication of togetherness when the verbal code ‘we’ is said, this is because it connotes that Bauer media isn't just one person it is a group of people that work together to get the best possible media out put they are capable of to the public. Furthermore the use of the verbal code ‘think’ highlights to the audience that they don’t just put anything out, they think of what the audience will like best before publishing it. This is important because they want to satisfy the customer when they look at Bauer media. Lastly the use of the verbal code ‘Popular’ conveys to the reader that Bauer media only produce articles that is the most popular and in fashion. This is essential that they do this because if a media group produces things that people do not like then the audience will not want to read or listen to Bauer Media.
  • 7. Brand Ethos and Ideology Strapline: The denotations of the strapline for Q music magazine “THE WORLD’S GREATEST MUSIC MAGAZINE” connotes the boldness and confidence of the brand. This is ‘signified’ (De Saussure) by the actual writing being in bold and placed above the masthead first on the page. The denotation of the strapline being in black on the red background makes it stand out as the house style used are red and white so the fact its black lettering is ‘signifying’ (De Saussure) the uniqueness of the magazine. This is also connoting to the range the magazine is offering and the verbal code ‘greatest’ implies it is above the competitors.
  • 8. Technological Convergence Definition: the coming together of technology such as social media and print media to produce and distribute a product such as a music magazine Bauer media contacts their subscribers though many different ways such as Facebook, twitter and various other media platforms. • 20. Production Process Date of publication – firstly the thing to do it set up the date of publication. The date of publication is the date that you want the magazine to be released to the public as a finished product. Once this date has been set you have now got to have the magazine finished by then. This is also known as a schedule which is how you are going to plan the production and when each process occurs Managing the schedule – this is probably the most important step in the whole process. If the schedule is managed properly the production of the magazine will be successful. The schedule should be made in such a way that if there is a problem there should be a solution for it so the production process runs as smoothly as possible. Also a well organized schedule will enable you to meet the deadline set. This therefore connotes that the schedule is vital for a successful production. Editorial and budgetary decision – The editorial decisions involve the magazine’s editorial team assembling and deciding what topics will be covered in the next issue of the magazine. the editorial team essentially talks about the various contents that will make up the magazine and decide what the final copy will consist of. Also they look at the budget for the magazine and they work around it to make it within the budget. Content Acquisition – the content acquisition is arguably the most important step because without the content there cannot be any magazine in the first place. Therefore content is basically the number one priority. There are two essential ways that content can be collected for the magazine. These are ‘in-house staff’ and ‘external writers’ that are commissioned to write on topics that are specialist in nature Source: http://www.music-production-guide.com/music-production- process.html
  • 21. Sub-editing – this is the next step to be taken. Sub editing focuses on one major thing, which is quality control. If the media organization is big enough to have a sub-editor, then he is going to be responsible for this job; if there is no sub-editor, then the editor does this job. This step involves the following important things: Page Layout – there is a team responsible for page layouts called the layout staff. Their job is to typeset and layout the pages that make the magazine. They use very powerful Desktop Publishing programs such as InDesign or PageMaker to get the job completed. It is at this stage that adverts from advertisers are placed into the content. Proofreading – once the magazine has been completed it is checked over a few times by a computer to make sure there is no errors in the spellings of punctuation. It also checks if the layout is correctly File emailed to printer – After the proofreading stage, the DTP file of the entire magazine is sent to the printer whose job will be to print the magazine. Distribution –The printing company, having finished with the printing of the magazines will package them neatly and send them to a warehouse. From the warehouse, the magazines are then distributed and then sold to the public. Bauer Media. (2016). Our company . Available: https://www.bauermedia.co.uk/about/our-company. • 54. Magazine of Inspiration Main image: the main image is a mid shot of Eminem. A mid shot is when you can just see the top half of the subject and nothing else. the subject (Eminem) is a well known artist and will catch the readers attention because they will recognize his face. A mid shot of the artists reveals a sense of authority in the magazine. This is also conveyed in the masthead this is because Eminem is overlapping the masthead which denotes that he is an important person. Masthead: the mast head is in two different colors and they are faded into one another. This makes the the Masthead look more interesting and attracts the readers attention. The masthead is also in a very bold font which stands out to the reader. Cover lines: the reason for side headings is to give the reader an idea if what is in the specific magazine article. Main headline: the reason for using a pull quote on the front cover of a magazine is to intrigue the reader into reading the magazine. Coverline: Addressing the reader this is used to entice the reader into reading the article to find out the answer.
  • 55. Double page spread of Inspiration Main image: a long shot camera angle of Bruno mars the reason for a long shot is to help set the scene and reveal what is around the artist, this therefore draws the attention from the artist to to other objects in the shot. Brand identity: the use of the letter V is brand identity for the company VIBE. The reason why they do this on every page in the magazine is because it increases advertisement of the magazine and helps with the recognition of the company. Title: The use of this Interesting title is used to pull the reader into reading the extract . The reason why it pulls people in is because it is using play on words. Furthermore it is in bold and large font which catches the readers attention. Bold headings: bold headings are used to highlight to the reader where another paragraph starts and what it is about. What I will repeat. For my magazine I will be repeating the large image on the right hand side of the double page spread. It will be a long shot and have the subject with another object. The reason why I will be doing this is because it makes the page look a lot more interesting and more welcoming to read the extract. I will also be using play on words in the title and making it big and bold. This is because it catches the readers attention and will intrigue them into reading the extract. Brand identity will also be used on the page like the VIBE magazine. This is because it will give the magazine a professional look and will increase the advertisement of the magazine. Drop capital: shows reader where to start reading and is it the same font as the masthead creating continuity.
  • 56. Genre The genre for the magazines of inspirations is hip hop/rap. This is portrayed using the artists on the front cover of the magazines. Eminem is one of the best Hip hop/Rap artists in the world and is a good selling point for the magazine because a lot of people idolize him in the music industry. Bruno Mars is on the double page spread because he is big in Hip hop especially for the younger generation. This is what I want my magazine to be like because these genres are up and coming and are already starting to be really popular especially in the age range that I have chosen.
  • 57. Form and Style The form and the style of the magazine has to be professional and age appropriate for the target audience. The Masthead and other bold titles will be in a bright color so it helps with the recognition of the company. The masthead will be in a bold font that is easily recognizable to the reader if they see it again in a shop. Furthermore The main image will also overlap the masthead so the reader is aware that the person in the picture is the main subject in the specific article of the magazine. Throughout the magazine I will have product placement on the pages, in places that the reader will see easily, this increases the advertisement and recognition of the company. Furthermore I will use interesting images that will incise the reader into reading the magazine, I will also use interesting cover lines with well known artists so people will want to read more about it. The colors that I will be using for Rythmn is red, grey and black and for Beat I will be using yellow and black. Rhythm BEAT
  • 58. Proposal My initial Proposal for the magazine front cover, outlining all the aspects I will be covering from format to genre to style and approach to even possible masthead ideas. This will be informative to rely on when creating my magazine and give clear focus on how to develop the magazine but make sure I meet the criteria I began with to ensure it is focused and profitable.

  • 63. Source: http://ncrafts.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/socio- economic-needs.png The target audience for Vibe magazine is a 31.7% to 68.3% female to male ratio. The target audience age range is largely within the ages 15-24 years old and the second most popular age range is 25-34 years old. This is because the magazine focuses on content aimed at the younger generation (15-34) Adults in ABC1 will read a print newspaper whereas adults in C2DE will go online instead. If you include print and online together the statistics show the target audience for the sun is 20-65+ this is because the younger generation is in the C2DE bracket being teens and young adults. The newspaper appeals to this audience as it is a tabloid and covers sport and contains images. However it also will appeal to the older audience as it includes upcoming news and areas of politics. Additionally you can see the age range is older online as it includes more celebrity gossip and sports culture which are the interest of the younger audience. However having a print newspaper enables the older audience access to the paper Spending power

This is useful because the person wants the mast heat to be interesting and easy to read. The fonts that I have chosen are suitable then because they are bold and eye catching to people and they look professional, on addition it fits the genre of choice which is Hip hop.
  • 65. Masthead ideas On this mind map I have analysed all the aspects that the Masthead should meet before the magazine is produced. The aspects include things like: eye catching, original colours, unique font styles etc.… The reason for planning in advanced and especially for the Masthead is because it is the first thing that the audience will see, it is the identity of the brand and it needs to stand out against its competitors making it easy for the reader to recognise. Masthead for Beat COLOUR SCHEME FONT Connotations behind BEAT Style Monochrome and a primary colour Beat is a term with music creation, Hip-hop primarily relies on beats to create the song. This masthead directly indicates the genre the magazine will fall into. Connotations behind Rhythm Rhythm is a term used within the music industry to describe the feel of the music. This masthead relates to the genre of the magazine being Hip-Hop a well know music taste. The font style needs to be in keeping with the genre of music therefore will be using DaFont to select the most appropriate block typography that is clear and easy to read and also works in colour. This will allow the primary colour to stand out and therefore the categorize the information into most important. Connotation behind colour Yellow Happiness, upbeat, strong, shine, standout.
  • 66. House Styles for Beat The house style for BEAT magazine is monochrome and yellow. This is because the two colours contrast well and they look good when there is an even amount of each colour on a page. The yellow will be used for key information such as Masthead and Headlines, whereas the white will be used for additional information; cover lines and barcode. This colour scheme will be carried out throughout the whole magazine to show that it has a consistent house style, creating a brand identity and continuity. This also appeals to the target audience who will identify with this consistent style but also passing by audience who will be intrigued by the magazine that stands out the most against competitors. This colour scheme is new for this genre of music magazine with the closest house style being Billboard who use a range of colours. This is due to the gender neutral colours and the connotations of yellow being happy. The synergy created with the social media icons allow the magazine to use technological convergence to widen the audience and use below the line marketing to promote their product. This should lead to more readers and consumers as well as overall publicity. The icons could possibly be altered to fit the house style with Photoshop skills to change them to yellow.
  • 67. House Styles for Rhythm The house style for Rhythm magazine is monochrome and red. This is because the two colours contrast well and they look good when there is an even amount of each colour on a page. The red will be used for key information such as Masthead and Headlines, whereas the white will be used for additional information; cover lines and barcode. This colour scheme will be carried out throughout the whole magazine to show that it has a consistent house style, creating a brand identity and continuity. This also appeals to the target audience who will identify with this consistent style but also passing by audience who will be intrigued by the magazine that stands out the most against competitors. This colour scheme is popular for this genre of music magazine with Q and NME adopting this house style. This is due to the gender neutral colours and the connotations of red being passion. The synergy created with the social media icons allow the magazine to use technological convergence to widen the audience and use below the line marketing to promote their product. This should lead to more readers and consumers as well as overall publicity. The icons could possibly be altered to fit the house style with Photoshop skills to change them to red.
  • 68. Graphic layouts for Front Cover The Graphic Layouts are two options for my magazine front covers. This is giving me a clear indication of where to place my different magazine conventions. These layouts are based on my inspiration VIBE, as this is a popular magazine in the genre of music I am using, this therefore gives me a good indication of what my target audience except and like. Personally I prefer the graphic layout on the left as it is clear and easily readable. Certain conventions will always remain in the same position and this is evident in the inspiration magazines. This will include masthead in the top left, barcode bottom right ( including price; issue date and number; website address and social media links) this is due to the visibility from a distance and the value of the information. The right graphic layout includes more information and could be adapted to be more clear but will attract a wider audience who want to be ‘informed and educated’ (Katz).
  • 69. Graphic layouts for DPS This graphic layouts are depicting what my Double Page Spread design and page layout will be. This makes it easier when creating my page as I am assured all the conventions are included and the layout is popular with my target audience. The layout will remain similar in the common conventions. The placement of the title/Headline of the artist in the top left, and the page being split in text and image. The inclusion of a advertisement will be related to the artist featured and encourages the reader to read the article/information about picture. The will always be a page number at bottom of both pages.
  • 70. Rough sketches- FRONT COVER OF MAGAZINE The Masthead is advertising the Brand of the magazine, located at the top of the page to draw the audience’s eye, bright and simple consisting of a few letter. Cover Lines covering more of the content within the magazine and offer more information from across the whole genre. These will cover all aspects of the magazines genre to ‘Inform and Educate’ (Katz) the audience on the whole genre, enticing them to purchase and read on. It is essential to have a Barcode visible on the front cover, this includes the price the magazine, the issue number, and social media connections. I have located the barcode at the bottom of the page to not distract from main cover and to be easily scanned for the company’s selling the product. Main Headline introducing the star on the main image and the double page spread that is inside. Enticing the reader to purchase the magazine to read on, persuasive pull quote taken from the interview captures their attention and creates continuity throughout the magazine. A Puff Promotion is encouraging reader participation as they will have to enter the competition. Also, offers their audience something for free if they win which is related to the genre of the magazine encouraging purchases as the reader will want to own the prize. Strapline is always placed below the masthead, catchy slogan unique to the brand and remember able by readers. Social Media icons included in the barcode to promote technical convergence but also promote the brand’s franchise and encourage audience participation Main Image will cover the background and layered under all verbal codes. This is first glimpse of artist within so has to be bold and mysterious.
  • 71. The centrality of the Main Image is because it grasps the attention of the reader. It must relate to the text and will be a mid shot or long shot, differing the image from the front cover. The Headline is bold at the top of the page, this is advertising the main story or artist. This introduced the content of the page and ties the image and text creating clear strong anchorage of all the information. I have added the Logo on this side of the page so that it increases the advertisement of the magazine company reinforcing the brand identity and continuity. Interview - This interview will be introducing the artist, outlining what upcoming events they have, how the joined the music industry and their music. This format allows the reader to personally connect with the subject and give gain direct knowledge about the subject. There will be a Pull Quote in the middle of the text taken from the interview. To enticed the reader to read the full text. There is an Addition Section the bottom of the page for other photos to do with the main Image. This gives the reader a variety of images of the artist and add more content behind the genre of music. Rough sketches- DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD Drop Capital will be at the beginning of the interview to tell the reader where to begin from. Will be the first letter of the interview this will also be in the masthead font to create continuity. Social Media beneath the interview to encourage reader to use the other media platforms of the magazine to gain further knowledge. Also, a sentence encouraging reader to view whole interview on a Facebook and website page. Page Numbers on both sides of the double page spread along the spine side by side will allow readers easier access to the information.
  • 72. Finalsketches These are the final sketch layouts that I have chosen as a base for the magazine Front Cover and Double Page Spread. This is due to the spaced layout therefore easy accessible to read. It also is a simple design, based from other popular magazines of this genre and therefore is appealing to the reader visually. It includes all the conventions of a music magazine and will be focused on the content within the pages which is what the reader wants to be ‘informed and educated’ (Katz) and ‘Personally identify’ (Katz) with the information. As denoted in the final sketch of the front cover I would have the masthead at the top of the page for clear visibility and the main image as the background in the center of the page to make sure the audience know who is being featured, similarly the same reason my headline is centrally positioned. I would use puff promotions and social media to expand the consumer ship. The additional cover lines of related content will be to the left side of the page over laying the main image to highlight the variety of content within. The double page spread as denoted by the final sketch will include the masthead to create continuity and brand identification. The usual conventions of a double page spread such as drop capitals and pull quotes will also be included to entice the readers in and the text and image will be separate to make the page appealing as other magazines format is similar.
  • 73. Draft Interview Hello How are you? Very good thank you Just wondering if you would answer a few questions that the members of public would want to know? yes of course I'm always happy to answer the questions that my fans have prepared to ask me, it lets them know more about myself and my life. When growing up was Hip Hop always your favorite genre of music? Yes, it was. I always thought that it was an interesting type of music and I never got bored of listening to it. I listened to it whenever I had the chance. How long have you been in the music industry? When I made my first album I was 17 years old, that means I have been in the music industry for 7 years. Did you always want to be in a famous band? Ever since a young age I always had a dream of preforming in a band in front of thousands of people, I always liked to preform in school productions and I loved the adrenaline I got from being up on the stage. However it was never the same as being in a band at a concert which was a true dream of mine. Who is your inspiration in life? Who do you look up to? I don’t have a specific idol as such, I get inspiration from other people in the same industry as me. They motivate me to contribute as much as I can to the music industry. What do you think got you into music? Since a young age I was always in a good mood when I listened to music, so I have loved music since about the age of 5 When did you find out that you had a talent? I was emotional because since I was young I always wanted to be famous and when I got recognized I was overwhelmed with excitement. Have you got any targets for your success in the future? Yes, I would love me and my band to be top in the charts.
  • 74. Test Photography and Prop List The clothing against the night background worked well as the colours stood out. There were no requirements for hair and makeup but the costume was key to represent the genre of music and allow the audience to identify with the subject. The only problem that occurred during the filming was the lighting as this was taken at night and relied on street artificial light that wasn’t controllable. This was not taken into consideration within the photography plan however the resources that solved this came from components that were planned for. Using the flash setting on the camera and headlights from the transport allowed enough light to gain a strong photo. The point of the photography plan was to make sure every aspect of the set was covered form costume to setting. This was a good guide building to the day to make sure that everything needed was prepared and any problems had solutions.

This means it will cost £8910 for the 2 months for everyone. https://www.officespacelondon.com/london -bridge
  • 78. Cost of printing I will be printing 200 copies of the magazine when the magazine is first released for the first time to the public. • 80. Advertising revenue My main source of income for the magazine will be coming from the advertisements within it. I have managed to get hold of the advertising costs from my magazine of inspiration which is Vibe. These rates will give me a rough idea for my magazine. In addition another source of income for the magazine is giving people chances to win items using puff promotions that can be dotted around the magazine. If the person for the magazine which will therefore increase the amount of people reading the magazine and eventually end up with a larger profit.
  • 81. Sales revenue Sales revenue is the main source of income when it comes to selling the final product. Vibe magazine sell their magazines for around £1.60 per magazine in the UK. I am going to price my magazines at that price because it isn’t a lot of money to the average UK citizen and it will therefore mean that a lot more people will want to buy it because it is not too expensive to spend that every week. Vibe £1.60 Rolling Stone £4.95 Kerrang £1.88 NME £2.20 Q £3.70
  • 82. Subscription revenue The cost for a subscription for Vibe magazine is at a minimum, £9.95 . that is for 6 issues. I will be basing my subscription costs at these prices as they are reasonable prices and the customer will be more intrigued to buy the subscription because they will end up saving money.
  • 83. Role of relevant regulatory bodies The Independent Press Standards Organization (IPSO) is the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK. We hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help to maintain freedom of expression for the press. • They make sure that member newspapers and magazines follow the editors code • They investigate complaints about printed and online material that may breach the Editors’ Code. https://www.ipso.co.uk/about-ipso/ For my personal magazine I need to ensure that the editors code is not breached in any way. Making sure everything is factual and any information commercially sensitive will be brought to the regulators attention for judgment so the content can be released respectively. My magazine will need to deal with any possible complaints, using the ISPO website where the company can see the complaints and follow the procedure to deal with them.
  • 84. Copyright When using other images it is important to check if there is any copyright regulations on the photos. When creating the pages I avoided using copyrighted images so I did not have to worry about asking for permission to use the images, as I used my own primary imagery owned by the company.
  • 85. Watermark Content that has a watermark over it is usually copyrighted and can be referred to as IP (intellectual property) and this is protected by the law. IP allows the owners and trademarks to benefit from their own work and investment. This is important in my own work as all content will be orginial and needs to be protected. Also IP on printed work, I will secure a digitial watermark which protects any copyrighted content of my magazine online and on social media. Putting on a watermark is a good idea if you do not want people to copy one of your photos. This is because it is hard to Photoshop the watermark off without the picture looking warped or bad. In the image it shows that I have inserted a watermark on my image to avoid people using it in their work. This is be covered on all images faintly to protect the work of the magazine.
  • 86. Data protection act 1988 The The Data Protection Act controls how your personal information is used by organizations, businesses or the government. Everyone responsible for using data has to follow strict rules called ‘data protection principles’. https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/the-data-protection-act As well as protecting my personal companies content the Data Protection Act protects any personal information. This includes any person working for the company and all business transactions. This is due to the sensitive information kept on record and protects someone’s personal life and financial security. For my magazine I need to be sure this is carried out for the safety of my employee's but also that all staff are made aware of the health and safety act, for example printing workers will be shown how to use the machinery safely to protect them from health issues.
  • 87. Primary Research I have designed a questionnaire that will enable me to get constructive feedback on my magazine that I have sent them it asks the audience questions like ‘what is your favourite aspects’ and also questions like ‘what would you change about it’ this way I am able to see what people enjoy about the magazine and what people would want to be changed in the future.
  • 92. Location recce Location time and date The location was near an urban area late on a winter night. This created an urban look and a kind of spooky atmosphere to the photograph. This also meant location fees weren't an issue as this is public land. The use of natural lighting for effect makes the image more relatable and realistic. Props / Equipment The only props I used was clothing. I used a brand of clothing that is well known in the hip hop/rap culture. This makes the photo more suitable for the genre of magazine that I have selected, and makes the artist more relatable to audience. Permission There was no permission needed because the photo was taken of a colleague. Potential hazards The only potential hazards was traffic whilst taking the photo it was late at night so luckily there was no cars or pedestrians, but high visability clothing was used for all cast members.
  • 93. Conclusion In this section I have covered rough ideas I had for the magazine and all the images that I got inspiration from in order to make it. I have also covered things like the color scheme of the products and the layout that I will most likely have for the final design. In addition I have highlighted the production process of the final product and added in the aspects like the interview and the images that I will be using on the DPS. Furthermore there is information about the equipment I will be using and the job roles for the different people helping out in the manufacturing of the product. Lastly I have peer feedback that I can use to change and alter my work to make it better.

  • 95. Contents In L03 I will be highlighting the photo shoot plan along with all the equipment and props that will be used in the process. I will be pointing out the form and style of the magazines that I will be making and will be showing the flat plan of the whole magazine as if I was creating the whole thing. Furthermore there will be information on the equipment, production plan, step by step guide and the tools I used to make the magazine images look as best as I could.
  • 96. Project The denotation of the Masthead Beat connotes that the information in the magazine is going to inform the user about music and the artists that produce them. If a magazine is up beat it means it will be a positive magazine to read for people who enjoy listening to music. Project description For the project I will be analyzing my magazines of inspirations double page spreads and front covers. I will also be looking into how they advertise these magazines and the techniques they use to do this. Photographer For the photos I had another class member named ‘Jonathan Carter’ be the photographer. This allows me to focus on the look and model. Reference images and ideas The idea to take the photos came from the images displayed below when completing a test photography shoot. Casting The cast used for this was myself and Jonathan (the photographer). This allowed less pressure on the day and was easier to work together to achieve the best shots. Photography Plan
  • 97. Model requirements The model has no specific requirements, however a range of photos or varying shot types and angles need to be taken to and variety to the front cover and double page spread images. Wardrobe requirements For the wardrobe requirements the clothes have to be relevant to the genre of magazine. For the clothing it was ‘Puma X Trapstar’ which is popular fashion brand for the grime/trap scene Appearance in the photo Along with the correct clothing the posture and facial expression used for the photo needs to look relevant to the type of music in the magazine. This was connoted by the attitude portrayed and the slightly hidden face. Hair and makeup The was no hair and makeup requirements in the photos because the model’s attire included a hat, which is typical of the genre. Also the shoot was at night therefore makeup and lighting was not needed also. Where and when The location for the photograph has to be an urban background because it is a representation of where grime originated from. It also would help if it was dark so it adds effects to the photo.
  • 99. Rhythm BEAT
  • 100. Advertisement For the advertisement of the magazine I will be using mainly social media like face book, twitter and other platforms like instagram to promote technological convergence. The reason why I will mainly advertise on these social media platforms is because a major percentage of the worlds population use these or have used them in the past. This means that if I advertise on these a lot of people will be able to see the magazine and therefore will bring more people to read about the magazine. Also being below the line marketing/ viral marketing this is allowing free advertisment therefore cost of marketing will not be taken from the budget.

  • 103. However, it was never the same as being in a band at a concert which was a true dream of mine. Who is your inspiration in life? Who do you look up to? I don’t have a specific idol as such, I get inspiration from other people in the same industry as me. They motivate me to contribute as much as I can to the music industry. What do you think got you into music? Since a young age I was always in a good mood when I listened to music, so I have loved music since about the age of 5. When did you find out that you had a talent? When I was about 15 years old, my mum overheard me singing and said that I am a very good singer. What were your thoughts when you started getting recognized in public by fans? I was emotional because since I was young I always wanted to be famous and when I got recognized I was overwhelmed with excitement. Have you got any targets for your success in the future? Yes, I would love me and my band to be Top in the Charts. These questions and answers are to be used in my double page spread and is all content surrounding my featured artist, who is the main focus on the front cover, from first person response. I will be using my inspiration as a format as the simple colours make is appealing to read the content and the photography is in keeping with the artist.

This is useful because the person wants the mast heat to be interesting and easy to read. The fonts that I have chosen are suitable then because they are bold and eye catching to people and they look professional, on addition it fits the genre of choice which is Hip hop.
  • 110. House Styles for Rhythm The house style for Rhythm magazine is monochrome and red. This is because the two colours contrast well and they look good when there is an even amount of each colour on a page.
  • 111. Front Cover plans These are the plans that I made for the front cover to look like. I did two, one on the computer and one hand drawn so I can edit it how I want the front cover to look like when I make it. This layout and design was key in making the final product to remain try to the general layout of a music magazine and ensure all magazine conventions were included. This was a excellent tool to refer back to and the final product is a close copy to the original designs.
  • 112. Final Front Cover BEAT This is the final front cover. It is similar to the plans in the way of the main image and the masthead being laid out. I have altered somethings compared to the plan because some things fitted better in different places for example the barcode being on the bottom left side rather than the bottom right side. Also my design were changed slightly from the feedback I received through the pitch and survey monkey and I have adapted the product to my audience’s likes and dislikes. This was vital in making sure my product is profitable and appeals directly to the target audience.
  • 113. Feedback on Front Cover The feedback that I got was really detailed and helped me a lot with what I should change on the magazine to make it better overall and more enjoyable for the audience. Furthermore, it gave me an idea of what the peers liked about my magazine and what I don’t have to change. This was key to making sure that the magazine was appealing to the target audience and therefore will be profitable on sale. This feedback was generally detailed and outlined exactly what the opinion was of the magazine, the constructive critism was what was used to inform the corrections.
  • 114. Step by step for the front covers • The first thing that I did was select the background color of the magazine and the size of the page. This would be the base of the whole front cover so I needed the color to be dark so the lighter colors would stand out more • The next thing I did after this was made the masthead, I used a font style of my choice off of the website DAFONT. I downloaded the font and used the text tool in order to insert it onto the front cover. I used to font style for the cover lines also so it looked professional and consistent. • I used the ruler tool to make everything in line and to make it look professional and neat. • After I selected the image I wanted to use for the font cover I used the quick selection tool in order to cut around my silhouette, this helped me to completely get rid of the background in the image and use the background that I selected in the first step of making the front cover. • In order to resize the image so it looks better on the page, I dragged the ouse to the top right/left of the image, held down shift and resized it, holding down shift made sure that the image would not get warped whilst im resizing it and therefore making it look stretched or low quality. • After I added in the photo and the cover lines and I was happy with it, I added in the barcode that I found offline. I added in social media logos that I resized in order to fit into the box that I made for the barcode at the bottom left of the page. • In addition I also added in a date of issue to make it look more professional and to inform the reader of when the magazine was issued.
  • 115. Step by step for the Double Page Spreads. • The first thing that I did was select the correct dimensions for the double page spread and make sure that the page was the correct size. • Secondly I typed up the interview into word and organized it how I wanted it on the double page spread. • After that I made text boxes on the double page spread ready for the interview and then I inserted the interview into them and made sure everything was correctly spelt and it looked professional. • I then added in the photograph that I had taken and edited ready for the doable page spread. I used the resizing tool in order to make it fit neatly onto the page. • I added social media logos and links onto the bottom of the page so people are reminded that they can find the magazine on the social media platforms displayed. • On top of the interview I added the pull quote from the front cover so the reader knows the article is related to the front cover • Finally I added in drop capitals so the reader knows where to start reading and then I added in the page numbers and a web adress so the reader knows what page they are on and they are also shown how to access the website of the magazine.

  • 117. Environment of Presentation I have taken a few photos of the classroom environment where my presentation took place in. I presented the presentation on a whiteboard which was situated in the middle of the classroom so the audience that I was presenting in front of found it easy to watch the presentation. I also used a slide changer for the presentation. This is because I could stand away from the whiteboard and control the slides without getting in the way of the presentation. To record the presentation I used a Nikon camera. To hold the camera I also used a tripod to keep it steady. The classroom that my presentation took place in The remote that I used to change the slides on the presentation. The camera used to record the presentation The tripod I used to hold the camera in a steady position Evidence of Pitch and placement of me in relation to the enviroment
  • 118. Materials Used The materials that I used was an interactive whiteboard and a laser pointer on a slide clicker. This made it easy for me to conduct my presentation as professionally as possible. To film the presentation for evaluation I used a DSLR camera that was mounted on a tripod for a steady and professional video. This equipment allowed for a professional pitch and was industry standard. This was a good way to gain constructive feedback in a controlled environment.
  • 119. Pitch feedback The yellow highlighted words are the areas that I need to improve on and the green highlighted words are areas I did well in. The yellow area’s will inform my corrections and changes, whereas the green will remain the same as my audience were happy with them.
  • 120. Equipment Costs This camera is all the photographer will need because it is a good quality and simple to use camera. The cost of this ‘cannon 700d’ is £569.99 there will only need to be one camera because there is only one photographer. Lenses and memory sticks will be purchased as need after the initial test photography. http://www.argos.co.uk/product/1024470?cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59158%7Ccid:200291090%7Cagid:12525697850%7Ctid:pla- 94832032610%7Ccrid:66128556290%7Cnw:g%7Crnd:16286430329956698556%7Cdvc:c%7Cadp:1o1&gclid=CL_c0JqzodICFekW0wodwtsAbg For the computer the employees will need something that is easy to edit the magazines on and has the software that best suits the job role they will be carrying out. For this I have chosen an ‘IMAC’ this is because they are what is commonly used in the industry and support the applications for editing. The cost of one IMAC will be £1,049.00 I will need 9 of these for all the employees so it will cost £9,441 http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/imac/215-inch-imac?afid=p238%7CsboCqtOrE-dc_mtid_187079nc38483_pcrid_64626336361_&cid=aos-uk-kwgo-pla- mac-slid--product-MK142B/A-UK Equipment Cost Office space outside London £891,0 Apple IMAC x9 £9,441 Cannon 700d camera £ 569.99 Printer £79.99 Stationary pens/paper £34.99 Office furniture (chairs and desks) £ 1508.95 For the office space I have selected an office in central London that is reasonably cheap for the location. It will cost £495 per month for one person. I will only be renting the office for a couple months (only for the duration of making the magazine. This means it will cost £8910 for the 2 months for everyone. https://www.officespacelondon.com/london -bridge
  • 121. Cost of printing I will be printing 200 copies of the magazine when the magazine is first released for the first time to the public. This is so I know how many people roughly want to read the magazine every month and will give me a rough estimate if I need to order more copies in the future. The cost of printing 250 copies of the magazine will cost £290.81 https://print24.com/uk/
