a/one of the oldest methods of teaching
b/teacher talks and students listen passively
c/teacher controlled and information centered
d/ dictated notes
e/ may make use of black board at times
f/Lecture method is most commonly followed in
colleges and in schools in big classes.
Offer an over view of subject or
lesson.
 To deliver detail information of
subject
Topic can be covered in single class
Student’s listening skill will improve
 Less learning materials required and
exclude the use of learning materials
Purpose of lecture
 A good lecture should not be too long as to
exceed the trainees attention span(up to 25
minutes)
 A good lecture should address a single theme.
 In a good lecture technical terms are carefully
explained familiar examples and analogies are
given.
 A good lecture establishes fluency in technical
content
 A good lecture uses illustrations and examples
 A good lecture builds on existing knowledge
A.Traditional oral essay
-The teacher is an orator and the only speaker
B.Participatory lecture
-begins with learners brainstormig ideas on
the lecture topic on what they have read in
preaparation.
C.Feedback lecture
- Consists with mini lectures with 10-minute
small group discussion.
D.Mediated lecture
-use of media such as films, slide, web based
images etc
a/ in the introduction of
a topic
b/in the introduction of a
new instrument
c/revising and
summarising lessons
d/covering the syllabus
quickly
e/ presenting the history
of plants and animals
Situations where lecture
method can be used
Before starting to prepare a
lecture, the teacher must be
able to answer four basic
questions:
-who is your audience?-who
-what is the purpose of your
lecture?-why
-how much time is available-
how long
-what is the subject matter?-
what
PLANNING THE LECTURE
a/time available
b/The audience
c/Subject matter posture
d/Gesture
e/Voice
f/Vocabulary
g/manner
A good lecturer must
take care of,
a/The speakers content expertise
b/The language used
the degree of transparency of presentation
c/Use of audio visual aids
d/Attention and intellectual participation of
pupils
How to evaluate lecture
It is quite economical method because it is
possible to handle a large number of students
at a time and no laboratory equipments, aids,
materials are required
Advantages of lecture
method
-using this method the knowledge can
be imparted to students quickly and
prescribed syllabus can be covered in
short time
It is quite attractive and easy to follow and also
by this method teacher can develop his own style
of teaching and exposition
It simplifies the task of teacher as he/she
dominates the lesson for 70-85% of the lesson
time and students just to him
Some good lectures. Delivered by the teacher may
motivate , instigate and inspire a student for
creative thinking.
- In this method the students participation is negligible
and students become passive recipients of information
limitations
In this method we are never sure if the students
are concentrating and understanding the subject
matter being taught to them by teacher
In this method there is no place of ‘learning
by doing’ and thus teaching by this method
strikes at the very root of science
 This method is suitable in teaching in higher
classes.
 The teacher should encourage his students to
take notes.
 Providing time for asking question and
answer and adding humour
