2. Introduction
Although I am going to talk about the
stereotypical pop music audience, pop music
has a mass audience. A mass audience means
that the genre is liked by lots of people but more
importantly appeals nearly all type of people
whether they are male or female, young or old.
3. Demographics
The demographic table stretches from social grade
A-E, Grade A being upper class and grade E being
the lowest paid citizens (normally pensioners). Pop
music tends to be C2- E because people in these
levels tend to be less educated due to either age
because young teens aren’t employed so they are
E’s or because of their job. The reason why people
who are less educated might like pop is because pop
is informal and chatty also because of the age,
young teens can relate to most of the songs.
4. Psychographics
Pop applies to reformers because reformers are
socially aware and are generally free minded
free from restrictions which is like this genre of
music. Explorers because they are normally
young and energetic like the pop genre is.
Aspirers because they too are young and they
are also into the looks of the band which is like
the pop genre.
5. Uses and Gratification theory
The uses and gratification theory is split into four different sections:
Identity, Educate, Entertain and Social. The two main ones in pop is
Entertain and Social but I think that the typical pop audience has all
four. Identity applies because the stereotypical audience of pop are
young teens and they aspire to be their idols, also you can straight
away differ a pop product from any other music genres. Educate
applies partially because the lyrics of the songs can relate to
problems the young audiences face but also in a pop magazine
they help to get an insight of their favourite pop bands. Entertain
applies because that's the whole reason why they buy the
magazines to enjoy reading about their bands and artists. Finally
the social aspect is comes in when they have read the magazine
then they are up to date with what’s happening in the pop world and
then they can interact with others.
