EVALUATION ACTIVITY 2How does your media product represent particular social groups? I have chosen to compare this article of Ellie Goulding to my artist as they both represent a certain social group; mostly due to them both being young female solo artists that have a similar musical genre and sound.
My initial aim as a social group to target was a mixed gender teenage audience from ages 16-25, typically the college/university ages particularly. Though they obviously enjoy music, they’re from a generation where fashion and it’s culture mix in with the music scene so people particularly interested in the different music out there and are more interested in the experience instead of just the plain sound. Like most music magazines aimed at this age, it is a similar price which makes it expensive enough to have good content but not too expensive to be a luxury not afforded on a budget. Overall it fits a teenage audience- both male and female if predominantly female.
The pose of the two women are the first noticeable similarity of the photos, a relaxed and lounging position with an arm lazily leant against. This helps represent the less highly strung and chilled attitude of the teenagers the magazines are targeting. They’re both also looking straight into the camera to engage with the reader, with relaxed and ‘everyday’ kind of facial expressions instead of a bright smile, which makes them look more real and less fake- a look many of the target audience would find relatable and would reflect there social group more personally. Both pictures have a non-descript plain background with a chair as a prop, making it look like a normal and not an ‘out-there’ place, obviously fitting with the average teenager- male and female- who listens to this type of music and fits this type of social group.
As well as the pictures, my magazine uses up-to-date language that fits and relates to the teenage audience, to make it a fun read without seeming too old-fashioned or not easy to understand. The questions actually asked in the interview also represents to the audience as it is the things that they themselves would ask, and the stuff that they really would want to know. The colour scheme, instead of being monotonous and ‘modern’, embraces the still exciting and fun side of teenage life with a brighter colour palette.
