2. Be able to evaluate the design of studies used to determine
health risk factors, including sample selection and sample
size used to collect data that are both valid and reliable.
Know how factors such as diet, high blood pressure, smoking
and inactivity increase the risk of CVDs.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
3.
4. Main modifiable factors are:
1. Smoking
2. Diet
3. Weight
4. Lack of activity
5. High blood pressure
MODIFIABLE(LIFESTYLE) FACTORS
5. 9 out of 10 people who need heart bypass surgery or stents as
a result of atherosclerosis are smokers.
Substances in tobacco smoke can:
1. damage the artery lining
2. narrow the arteries
SMOKING
7. Pressure at systole = 120 mmHg, at diastole=80 mmHg.
If pressure is regularly above 140/90 mmHg – it is high blood
pressure or hypertension.
Factors which also can increase the blood pressure:
1. chemicals in a smoke
2. obesity
3. inactivity
4. high level of salt
5. stress
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
