RISK FACTORS FOR CVDS

2.  Be able to evaluate the design of studies used to determine
health risk factors, including sample selection and sample
size used to collect data that are both valid and reliable.
 Know how factors such as diet, high blood pressure, smoking
and inactivity increase the risk of CVDs.

MODIFIABLE(LIFESTYLE) FACTORS

5.  9 out of 10 people who need heart bypass surgery or stents as
a result of atherosclerosis are smokers.
 Substances in tobacco smoke can:
 1. damage the artery lining
 2. narrow the arteries
SMOKING

6.  Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure, prevent obesity
and diabetes, lower blood cholesterol levels, balance
lipoproteins and reduce stress.
INACTIVITY

7.  Pressure at systole = 120 mmHg, at diastole=80 mmHg.
 If pressure is regularly above 140/90 mmHg – it is high blood
pressure or hypertension.
 Factors which also can increase the blood pressure:
 1. chemicals in a smoke
 2. obesity
 3. inactivity
 4. high level of salt
 5. stress
