Evaluation question 7
1. Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what
do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to your final
production?

4. Research and Planning
Through the course of creating my final product I have
developed numerous skills relating to both my research and
planning. It can be said that my product is a lot more in line
with professional practice than my prelim. This is probably
due to the fact that my knowledge and understanding of the
forms and conventions of real magazines has improved. I
have managed my time well and planned my work
thoroughly before beginning my final product whereas this
wasn’t the case when I created my prelim product.
6. Photography Composition
For my prelim task I decided to use a basic mobile phone
camera for taking my images. Through using an SLR
camera I have developed my ability to take pictures which
include the models posing in different positions. I also pay
more attention to distances.
7. Page Layout
It is evident that my product has improved since the prelim
phase. This is partially because of my ability to set out the
page in a professional way has improved. Through
organising text around my picture I have produced a more
professional product.
8. Design
In my prelim I failed to keep a consistent style throughout
the product. From researching real magazines and from my
audience research I found that keeping a house style was
very important. In my final product I tried to keep to a strict
house style which was consistent throughout my product.
Also in my prelim product, particularly in the contents page
my text was not well aligned which once again was
improved thanks to my research into professional practice.
9. Use of Fonts
In my prelim product the fonts I used were very basic and
quite boring. The only effect I used was to give the mast
head of the magazine more depth. Through planning and
research I found that a more exciting font that stands out on
the page appeals to a wider audience.
10. Use of Models
In my prelim I only used one model. After considering the
fact that real magazines don’t usually use the same model
for their front cover and contents page I decided to include
more models in my final product. Also, I got my models to
make more creative poses which made my product look
more professional.
11. Content
The content of my prelim is very limited compared to my
final product. Through learning more about how to write
articles and researching real magazine practices I was able
to include more detail about bands/artists and other factors
relating to the genre of indie music.
