4. Progression and learning – images
Images - I wanted to change my images, the image
on my front page is dull and was not taken with any
additional artificial lighting, but taken in a darker
area where there wasn’t a lot of natural lighting.
The image in my preliminary task was not edited
well, the background is also dull and I wanted to
improve on my images to make sure that I use a
better lighting, by making sure I knew about how the
lighting works and by trailing different angles and
positions of the lights to see where they hit my
model best. I spent time planning my images and
how I would position my model in order to get the
best images. My images are also better quality after
learning how to use the camera and its features such
as the ISO, Shutter speed and aperture. This enabled
me to take better quality photos, that look more
professional for my final production. I also did not
include any photos on my contents page when doing
my preliminary task, which I wanted to change on
my contents page for my final production. Using
photos on your contents page makes the magazine
look a lot more professional.
5. Progression and Learning – Text
For my text I feel that I have really progressed, by
knowing what fonts to use and positioning my writing
better to make it look more professional. In my
preliminary task my writing looked unprofessional and
didn’t stand out against the background. The colours I
used were also immature and not good in order to
stand out against the dark background. The text was
boring and wouldn’t entice the reader to want to buy
the magazine. For my final production I learnt more
about Photoshop and how it works, also by researching
magazines I could get a better understanding on what
the common conventions are for text in magazines. I
altered the font, colouring and sixe of my text in
order to make it look more professional. Using larger
for fonts to make the Mastheads, Titles and anchoring
text stand out against the rest of the text, using bold
fonts and colours so that it stands out against the
background and catches the readers eye. By using
different sizing, colouring and variating the boldness
of the font it allows the Main text such as the
masthead to stand out and be more prominent on the
page.
6. Progression and learning – layout & Masthead
Layout - When it comes to the complexity of my layout, this is another thing I have improved upon since my
preliminary task and I feel like I have done this. I managed to improve my layout by learning about layers on
Photoshop and how I can use these to create a professional product. Doing research also allowed me to gain more
insight in to common layouts of magazines which then led me to add more text on to my double page and also
correctly lay out my text on the front page.
Masthead – During the creation of my production I learnt how important the masthead is for the magazine, in my
preliminary task my masthead is not bold or eye catching, the font I used doesn’t stick out against any of the
writing and the colours used do not pop. Realising the importance of the masthead I researched more about
magazines and the style of their mastheads and how I could improve on my masthead to make it stand out and
make it look more professional. In order to make my masthead stick out and look more professional I changed the
sizing and font to make it a lot bolder and visible on the page, even though my masthead is positioned behind the
image it still stands out and is recognisable.
7. Final production – Double page spread
I was able to use the skills that I had acquired since creating my preliminary task to the
development of my final production. Using these skills that I had learnt through research and
trial and error it enabled me to create my double page spread.
8. Progression and learning
Through the progression from my preliminary task to
my final production I have acquired many new skills
which have enabled me to improve my final production
dramatically from my preliminary task. I have used the
skills I have gained to help me create my double page
spread. I used these skills to make changes to the
images, text and layout.
Images – For my double page spread my image was a
lot more prominent and eye catching, Knowing more
about the camera helped me with making sure I got
the best photos. Knowing how to also successfully
control lighting and change it so that it would
express the models features in different way and
make the image brighter. Using Photoshop I was able
to edit the Contrast and brightness making the image
look more professional and stand out against.
9. Progression and learning
Layout – I gained knowledge on how to layout my magazine through research, which enabled me to improve
dramatically on the way I layout and organise my information on my final production to make it easy to
navigate and interesting for the reader to look at.
Text – Researching fonts has allowed me to gain well needed knowledge to improve the font I use in my
final production to make them clearly stand out and catch the readers eye. Using a variation in fonts has
enabled me to show key titles and make certain text stand out against other text. Knowing how to
manipulate the text to make it stand out and also make it look aesthetically pleasing. This knowledge
meant that I knew where to emphasis text and use bolder fonts, sizing and colours enable to create an
exiting double page spread and also draw readers attention to the right places
