1. Question 1- in what ways does
your media product use, develop
or challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
Olivia Taylor
2. The title of the magazine:
fonts/colour
scheme/lexis(wording)
My magazine title is 808 weekly
808 is a drum used in most pop
songs and because my magazine
is a pop magazine I felt this was
a good title as it represents the
pop industry.
3. Fonts
For my masthead I used the font “liberty legion” this font is
large and bold which is ideal for a masthead as bold fonts work
best on front covers for the masthead. I also used the font “Gill
Sans Bold” this font was used for the coverlines, contents page
and pull quotes in the magazine. For my double page spread I
used “Times New Roman” as this was just for my body text.
The colours green blue and white were used as the image on
the cover goes well with these colours.

4. Design and layout/house style/
Gutenburg principle
The house style of my magazine is the colours white,
green and blue used throughout the magazine to show
continuity as well as using the same fonts throughout.
The font “liberty legion” is used whenever my masthead
is shown “Gill Sans Bold” is used for all other text except
the main body text in my double page spread article. In
the primary optical area there is my masthead as I want
this to be the first thing people see when looking at my
magazine. Strong fallow area- I put my date and price
in the strong fallow area as these are the key pieces of
information and by putting them in this area everyone
will be able to see it, in the terminal area I have my
model credits and coverlines as this is the last thing I
want people to see.
5. Photography/ Mise en scene/rule
of thirds/props
The image on my front cover is unbalanced – Emma is
sat down playing the piano, Pitor is stood up and Jade is
stood up holding a guitar there is a height difference
between all 3 and the two who are stood up have a
significant height difference and this makes the image
unbalanced. I used the rule of thirds as by using this
rule I was able to fit my coverlines and model credits on
the page. The Mise en scene- I had to make sure i used
pop based props to convey the genre so I used a piano
and guitar as these are two instruments associated with
the pop industry.
6. Special Effects any image
manipulation you have used on
photography.
I decided not to use any special
effects on my image as felt this
wasn’t needed as usually effects are
used on other genres not pop. For
example rock magazines use
manipulation.
7. Written article: Format/style/tone/used of journalistic
techniques ie simile/hyperbole layour of columns/use
of kicker/pull quotes etc
my double page spread article was a
interview and had an informal style of
language, this was because the audience
style is relaxed. On my double page
spread I used a kicker as these are used
in magazines I also used columns to keep
my text organized. I used alliteration in
my article “super supportive”.
8. Analysis of other magazines-
I analysed 3 magazines there front page ,
contents page and double page spread.
The magazines were Q ,NME and Kerrang
I looked at all of the main parts of the
magazines and incorporated them into my
magazine. Analyzing magazines helped
me to get a clearer idea of what needed to
be incorporated into my magazine.
