1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
Question 1
2. For my music magazine I have adhered to the typical codes and conventions that relates to
my genre, R&B and music magazines. On my front cover I gave included the typical
conventions such as the title (Bounce), barcode, date and issue number, price, main image
and the feature stories. For my main image I have decided to have a mid shot of my artist
showing just the face and shoulders with her hands over her mouth. This style of image is
very typical of this genre, however, I feel I have challenged the stereotype by the colours of
the image and by putting the image in a high contrast. I believe that by using the images I
have across my front page, contents page and double page spread I have adhered to the
codes and conventions of a R&B music magazine.
In each image of my artist she is wearing a different outfit as, from looking at other featured
artists in Vibe magazine I noticed the variety of costume changes and styles.
3. Another stereotypical part of my
magazine front cover are the stories
surrounding the main image; I have a
main story, which is a feature of my
artist, compettiton details, and other
shorter stories. I have placed the
feature story at the bottom of the
page as I felt it stood out best as well
as the purple writing being able to
stand out better, it also makes it clear
that it is the feature story for the artist
featured on the front page.
4. For my contents page I have continued with the
colour scheme from my front cover to keep it clear
and continuous. For my main image I have edited it
using Adobe Photoshop and changed the opacity of
the image to create a layered effect. I decided to do
this as I felt it looked aesthetically pleasing as well as
allowing the title and text to stand out without taking
focus away from the main image. I have the layered a
capital ‘B’ fro Bounce creating a typical convention
for my magazine that would be easily remembered. I
have then placed the title of my magazine in the top
left corner so it is still visible but doesn't take away
focus of the contents page title. I decided to
fragment my contents page title has I took inspiration
from my research and I liked the style as I felt it
looked stylish and memorable. I used the same fonts
from my front page to show continuality from my
front page. I downloaded my fonts from
fontspace.co.uk as I wanted to use different fonts
that were not common compared to the ones on
Photoshop. I also place two extra pictures that I took
when meeting celebrities as I thought they fitted well
with my music magazine as well as being typical of a
music magazine.
5. I have also decided to section my contents
page by putting the stories in boxes. This has
then created a more tidy look to my contents
page, which is typical of an ‘RnB’ magazine. As
well as including feature stories I have also
done a chart update, competition and
included an image of the number 1 single on
the official Radio 1 R&B chart. I have also
included a web link to subscribe to the
magazine another stereotypical feature of a
music magazine.
6. For my double page spread I have placed my main image on the left side of the page and
lightened the right to create an even divide to fill in black to create a clear division
between the two pages. Then I placed the title of the feature page at the top to make it
clear who the feature is on. Once again I have used the technique of capitalizing the first
letter of the artist name and placed it behind the text as it is a typical convention of my
magazine. I have also taken a main quote from the article that is from my front cover and
placed it under the title, this is a key convention of all music magazines. My text is in size
11.5 the normal sized font for a double page spread as I wanted it to be as realistic as
possible to a real double page spread.
