1. QUESTION 7
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK -
WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT TO FULL PRODUCT
2. WHAT I LEARNT FROM THE PRELIM
• Before carrying out the preliminary task I didn’t have any experience with editing or
camera work. After starting the task I was slightly more comfortable with the software and
camera however I still wasn’t 100% and needed a lot of improvement. Me and my group
used the preliminary task as a learning opportunity to try out different effects and
transitions to see what worked and what didn’t and also to get a basic knowledge of how
to use it. We used simple texts and transitions to help us get to grips with the software.
• In terms of sound our video was quite minimal, the only sound that we included was a
lullaby, we didn’t include any foley sounds.
• We didn’t plan particularly well for our preliminary task and we found that this made it
quite challenging and affected our final product. Due to our poor planning we had to
change our whole idea half way through because we realised that our original idea wasn’t
working as well as we had hoped. We had some continuity errors because we filmed on
different days and we didn’t consider costume or props.
3. PROGRESSION
I have learnt a wide variety of things in the progress from my preliminary task to the full product. I mainly learnt
these from mistakes that we made in our preliminary task for example poor planning and not using a tripod,
however, I also picked up certain points in my the progress of my research and planning after the preliminary that
helped me progress. Some of the things I have learnt are:
• The importance of planning, this meant that when it came to our full product we planned in much more
detail. We created a detailed storyboard to follow, we planned costumes, props, setting and the days which
we were going to film. This made the filming and editing process much easier because we knew what we
had to do.
• The importance of foley sounds to ensure that it appears realistic. I didn’t use these in the preliminary task
and I think it took away from the atmosphere slightly, however when we used them in the full product it was
much more effective and added more suspense, tension and realism to the opening.
• How to use cameras and the editing software. In the preliminary task our titles and transitions were all quite
basic however as I became more comfortable with the software our titles for the final product were more
advanced and we included a transition to make each title fade out. Our main title shattered which was an
effect that I created on after effects. I also learnt how to create more advanced transitions in between clips,
for example we included an overlay in our final product. Due to being more familiar with the camera we
could also use a wider variety of shots and we ensured that we used a tripod because our preliminary shots
were unstable.
