2. The preliminary task wasn’t as planned and thought out
as the main product.
There were a lot more steps involved including
researching more into the genre by watching many thriller
film openings (e.g. Drive, Jaws, A Clockwork
Orange, Se7en and many more) This helped me
understand the thriller genre more and gave me more of
an insight of what to do for my thriller opening scene.
We storyboarded every shot and every scene for the
main product to make sure we knew exactly what we
were doing and to explore lighting and sound as well as
camera movements and shots.
We also explored many initial ideas and asked the rest of
our class for feedback and to help us decide which idea
to choose and how to improve it.
All of these steps helped making the main product a
smoother process than the preliminary task where there
wasn’t this much detail and planning.
3. The preliminary task also helped me to
become more comfortable and familiar
with how to use a camera and what shots
are more effective than others.
We also used a different camera to film
the preliminary task and the quality
wasn’t that good and was often unclear.
This is why we decided to use a different
and better quality camera instead to
make sure our media product came out
looking professional and clear.
4. Our medium shots weren’t as good in the
preliminary task as sometimes the person we
were filming wasn’t all completely in the
shot and the top of their head would be cut
off.
We made sure to improve this in our full
product which made it more effective and
professional.
Main Task Preliminary Task
5. Filming the preliminary task also taught us
more about continuity editing and
different types of shots (shot reverse
shot, match on action shot) which helped
us to decide which types of
editing, camera movements/shots to use
for our main product to make sure it
comes out good.
We decided to stick to continuity editing
as this made the film look smooth and
effective and we also decided to use
over the shoulder shots as we thought it
looked more interesting and different. We
also kept to the 180 degree rule.
6. We also decided to add dialogue to our main
product as filming the preliminary task helped us to
see that dialogue makes it more effective and
realistic.
We also had more of an option in terms of
costume, location and props which made the
main product look a lot better than the preliminary
task as we could explore the lighting and colours
more. For example we used brighter lighting and
bright colours at the start of our main product to
create a happy atmosphere and then switched to
darker lighting and a scarier location to show that
something bad was about to happen.
7. Overall, I think our end product was much
better than our preliminary task as it had
more planning and research involved so
we understood the task more and we had
much more freedom and time to explore
different lighting, sounds, costumes and
props to make our opening scene more
effective.
