History of Paternalistic and Maternalistic Views on...
Throughout history, a woman's role was clearly defined to be a mother and dutiful wife to her
husband. There was a time where women were considered to be less intelligent than men simply
because they were women. However, this changed during the nineteenth century. Although women
were still considered to be defined as mothers, they also sought out work as workers in factories and
became more than just mothers and wives.
In the nineteenth century, there was a shift in the view of women. They were given more of an
education in order to prepare their sons to become better citizens. The reason was because the men
had realized that woman needed to be better educated to teach the values of a good member of
society to their children. This took ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Barton 2011) "As Dohash et al state, they were 'based on the assumption that females needed a firm
paternalistic hand to guide their development' (1986: 72). Likewise, referring to the Glasgow
Penitentiary for prostitutes, Mahood notes that inmates were reformed through 'a strict regime of
"mild, whole– some, paternalistic Christian discipline"' (1990: 78). And I myself remarked that
refor– matories were often utilised by fathers and husbands as a last attempt to '.. .assert some
paternalistic control over their wayward females' (Barton 2005: 69)." (Barton 2011).
In the analyses of female reformers, their honest compassion and humanitarian intentions were
occasionally unnoticed. (Barton 2011) "As Lewis (1992) has argued the work they undertook was
often harsh, laborious and, in the con– text of an institution like the Refuge, undoubtedly
challenging." (Barton 2011). In the case of some female reformers, their desire to help others by
doing things well and having good relationships with the women that were under their care was
genuine. However, this does not give any reason as to understand the detached, almost impatient
attitude that was seen to permeate the formal records of the institution. (Barton 2011)
In spite of this, the reformatory was actually a community that strived to have an idealized
conception of the middle class Victorian family (Barton 2011). Therefore, the execution and
mundane inquiry of routines of both ethical and

Influence Of Accordin Management At The Lincoln Electric...
The Lincoln Electric Company Organizational Culture
The continued influence of founder James Lincoln's values and belief system is visible throughout
every aspect of the organizational culture at the Lincoln Electric Company. Although James Lincoln
believed that businesses should follow Christian morality, he did not impose religion on any of the
employees. Instead, his beliefs are reflected in the company's policy of always placing the customer
first, and its view that this practice is not only morally correct, but also beneficial to the company's
economic success –– which has been proven true. James Lincoln also introduced the use of an
Advisory Board, consisting of employees elected by peers, which meets with the CEO twice a
month to discuss company operations and provide input on ways to make the company more
successful, often by focusing on improving employee experiences. Through suggestions to
management, this Advisory Board has been responsible for helping to implement the many policies
and programs that have lead to the Lincoln Electric Company's remarkable and steady success since
1935. One of the many strikingly successful aspects of the culture in this company is the extremely
low turnover rate, and the promise of job stability for employees. ... Show more content on

Employees are encouraged to share ideas and feedback with the Advisory Board, but this input is
simply used to craft recommendations for the head management. In the end, management has total
control over decisions and any course of action. As a result of the strong focus on personal
responsibility for professional success, employees require much less supervision from managers
than in comparable companies. This allows management to focus on the less tangible aspects of
running a business, such as financing for company expenditures (which is done almost exclusively
through use of internal revenue), sales, and concerns of

John D. Rockefeller: The World's First Billionaire
John D. Rockefeller, the World's First Billionaire. In his childhood, John Rockefeller was the second
of 6 children. His father was often gone, he was a traveling salesman as well a bigamist, and was
said to have children with his wife along with his midwife. His mother worked hard in her husband's
absence, providing food and support for her seemingly fatherless children. As a kid, Rockefeller was
very intelligent, and made extra money by raising turkeys, selling sweets, and doing paid labor for
neighbors. In 1853 his family moved to the Cleveland, Ohio, area, where John attended high school,
and very briefly, college. In 1855 at age 16, he worked as a clerk at a Cleveland commission that
bought, sold and shipped grain, coal, along with other similar household objects like those. He was
said to have celebrated the day when he got his first job, considering it more important than his
actual birthday. In 1859, Rockefeller along with his partner established their own commission firm,
and in the same same year, America's first oil well was drilled in Pennsylvania. In 1863, Rockefeller
and several partners entered the new booming oil industry by investing in an oil refinery in
Cleveland. The very next year, in 1864, he married an Ohio woman named Laura Celestia (or

Influence Of An Organization 's Culture
"The factors that are most important in the creation of an organization's culture include founders'
values, preferences, and industry demands." – (Carpenter, M., Taylor, B., Erdogan, B. (2009))
Influence of the Founders of the Company (Golden Rule) General Manager and vice–president of
the Lincoln Company, John C. Lincoln, made sure to incorporate his personal religious beliefs in the
company motto. He did not, however, force his beliefs on his employees or the public. Using his
Christian beliefs as guidelines to running the company successfully was his goal as he wanted to
incorporate the simple good natured values he was taught in life to running his company. Since then,
the following and current president of the company, Mr. Willis, has continued these values and
upheld the company's original motto. James Lincoln felt that customers were their priority, not the
stockholders. Customers were the "raison d 'etre" (The most important reason or purpose for
someone or something's existence) for every company, since without customers they would be
nothing. This is reflected in Lincoln 's policy to "at all times price on the basis of cost and at all
times keep pressure on our cost..." Lincoln 's goal, often stated, is "to build a better and better
product at a lower and lower price." (Arthur Sharplin (1996)) Keeping the main focus on the
customer has allowed the company to continue to grow and keep the values of the Lincoln brothers
alive to this day. The Incentive Management

Small Area Studies Based On Large Medicare Databases
What do you think about using small area studies based on large Medicare databases, such as the
one presented here, to identify outliers? Small area analysis is appropriate for certain situations,
however, it is not appropriate when comparing to a larger Medicare database concerning outliers.
For example small area studies help with determining disparities in healthcare, or assisting with
determining where to allocate resources, or looking at what other factors into why a condition is
worsening. Basically, small area studies can help with problems or concerns you may not otherwise
see or if that area is your only concern. They also can be helpful in understanding a community

First implemented in 1985 by Aetna (previously U.S. Healthcare), P4P programs were used to
reward top performers and improve outcomes (Bruno, 2012). The incentives were meant to improve
the quality of patient care by basing incentives on patient outcomes. Conversely, fee–for–service
reimbursements are based on the treatments and set limits on the amount reimbursed for services.
Because of these limits, incentives for use of pharmaceuticals and non–invasive procedures can
impact how physicians practice. Financial incentives play a significant role in how care is provided.
The North Ohio Heart Center was found to perform more angioplasties compared to the Cleveland
Clinic performing bypass surgeries resulting in different incentive rates (McLaughlin &
McLaughlin, 2015). These non–invasive procedures (angioplasties) generated highly profitable
incomes for the physicians involved at the North Ohio Heart Center. The physicians perceived these
procedures to be a safer option of treatment as opposed to drug treatment or bypass surgery. These
decisions impacted patient care by causing more patient visits and more tests being performed
generating a cumulative higher reimbursement. These incentives are moving us away from what is
best for the patient. Robert Doherty, ACP senior vice president, stated, "we need to move away from
the piecemeal approach: how many visits you can generate, how many tests

What Is Rockefeller's First Oil Industry?
In 1853, the Rockefeller family moved to the Cleveland, Ohio, area, where John attended high
school then briefly studied bookkeeping at a commercial college. It was the very first moment
young John Rockefeller stepped into the world of business. In 1859, Rockefeller went into the
produce commission business with a partner, Maurice B. Clark, and they raised $4,000. That same
year, America's first oil well was drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania. The oil price at that time stayed
unaffordably high since the industry was in infant level, demand wasn't very high and, most
importantly, the technology at that time couldn't efficiently refine the crude oil. In 1863, Rockefeller
and several partners entered the new oil industry by investing in a Cleveland refinery. Unlike other
oil companies searching for another well, Rockefeller and his partners focused on the efficiency of
refining process and its byproducts. They could stabilize the oil price, and could have price
predominance to other companies. The timing was also perfect. The war was ending, the vibe of
great expansion was booming and it was based on the expansion of railroad and oil–fueled
economy. On 10 January 1870, Rockefeller abolished the partnership of Rockefeller, Andrews &
Flagler, forming Standard Oil of Ohio. Continuing to apply his ... Show more content on

Titans of the Twentieth Century Essay
Titans of the Twentieth Century
Throughout the course of history, many people have influenced the lives of the American people and
the economic course of the United States. Although only a little over two hundred years old, the
United States has rapidly gained its economic power through the great minds and incentives of its
people. During the early twentieth century, many Americans saw the prosperity that America had to
offer. John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, and Andrew Carnegie took advantage of the growth of
America and helped to shape the American business, economy, and society into what it is today.

Officials from this company could then be used very effectively to spy on, and provide advanced
warning of, deals being made by his real competitors.(5) Rockefeller is quoted as saying, "The
strongest competitor turned to them with the confidence which it showed its propositions and said:
'We will take your burdens. We will utilize your ability; we well have you representation; we will all
unite together and build a substantial structure on the basis of co–operation.'" Unification was
essential if the oil business was to be sparred recurring periods of chaos and prostration.(6)
Probably the most effective secret deals done by Rockefeller and his partners were with the
railroads. Rockefeller saw that he could not compete with the refineries in New York, Philadelphia,
and oil cities unless he could even up the conditions by freight concession. He demanded a lower
rate by asking for a rebate from Michigan Central Railroad.(7) These "in harmony" deals meant
those refineries and oil traders not "in harmony" with Standard Oil would find that railroads would
refuse to move their oil, whatever the price. Oil is free at source, so once the investment in refining
and extraction plant has been made, the only important cost was transportation.(8) Rockefeller's
secret railroad rebates on the transportation of his oil kept his competitors guessing for years. None
of them could understand how he kept

Rehabilitation program, in Cleveland, OH, which has a similar scope of work and capacity (Shook

Cuyahoga River Fires
"In the United States, a concerted effort is underway to reduce water pollution and thereby improve
water quality." (Keller) A case history of river pollution is the Cuyahoga River located in
Northeastern Ohio. The river is 100 miles long flowing south to Cuyahoga Falls where it then turns
north until it empties into Lake Erie. Cleveland and Akron are two major cities located along the
river. The Cuyahoga is known as an infant glacial river, this is because it is one of the youngest river
created from the melting of the glaciers. It is estimated that the river is about 13,000 year old. The
story of the Cuyahoga is one with many lows and highs. The ... Show more content on

In 1952 a fire caused a million dollars' worth of damage to river boats and riverfront businesses. On
June 22, 1969 another river fire engulfed the river, this time the media coverage captured the
attention of the nation. Time Magazine described the Cuyahoga as the river that "oozes rather that
flows" and in which a person "doesn't drown but decays". Many of the residents of Cleveland
accepted the pollution as a necessary evil because they had jobs at these factories. This article
helped the people of Cleveland pass a 100 million dollar bond to clean up the Cuyahoga River.
Much of the industry that both made Cleveland rich and caused its river to burn may never be
coming back. The costs of these fires were tremendous, but it did help lead to laws being passed to
prevent this from happening in other rivers. One such law was the Clean Water Act of 1972.
The Clean Water Act (CWA) is the primary federal law in which the US governs water pollution.
The Act states the objectives of eliminating releases of high amounts of toxic substances into water.
The CWA made it unlawful to dump toxic materials into navigable, waters unless given a permit.
The permit is given through the EPA's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System. The
purpose of The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System is to regulate point sources that
flow into bodies of water. The Clean Water Act has been changed over the years because of

Essay On Standard Oil
Standard Oil began as an Ohio partnership incorporated in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller. Using
innovative business tactics, it absorbed or destroyed most of its competition in Cleveland in less
than two months.
Especially in early years, John D. Rockefeller was the single most important figure in shaping the
new oil industry. He distributed power and the tasks of policy formation to a system of committees,
but always remained the largest shareholder.
In response to state laws trying to limit the scale of companies, Rockefeller and his associates
developed innovative ways of organizing their rapidly growing company. On January 2, 1882, they
combined their disparate companies, spread across dozens of states, under a single group of trustees.

The state of Ohio successfully sued Standard, compelling the dissolution of the trust in 1892. But
Standard simply separated Standard Oil of Ohio and kept control of it. Eventually, the state of New
Jersey changed its incorporation laws to allow a company to hold shares in other companies in any
state. So, in 1899, the Standard Oil Trust, based at 26 Broadway in New York, was legally reborn as
a holding company, the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, which held stock in 41 other companies,
which controlled other companies, which in turn controlled yet other companies.
–In 1904, Standard controlled 91 percent of production and 85 percent of final sales. Most of its
output was kerosene, of which 55 percent was exported around the world. After 1900 it did not try
to force competitors out of business by underpricing them. The federal Commissioner of

New Pricing Strategies For East Cleveland Cable Tv
New Pricing Strategies for East Cleveland Cable TV
If we plan on being the provider of choice for cable services in East Cleveland, then we need to start
planning pricing strategies for East Cleveland Cable TV. We offer the same services in the area as
our competitors AT&T Uverse, Direct TV, Dish, and Time Warner, but re–setting our prices will
draw new customers and keep current resident cable services (Kotler & Keller, 2012 pg.389). We do
not want to attract customers just for a period of time for promotional and discount prices, however;
our prices should be attractive without adding promotions and discounts.
Selecting A New Pricing Package for Cable Services:
Revisiting our pricing will help our cable company survive intense competition with our
competitors (Kotler & Keller, 2012, pg.389). Cleveland is a large city within Ohio whereas East
Cleveland is a just a small fraction within the city of Cleveland. If we are going to survive and
continue to grow as the main cable service provider for the city locally, we are going to have to
increase sales within East Cleveland. Lower cost for the same services as our competitors will
generate higher sales; maximizing the market share brings a high demand.
Determining Demand:
How we calculate our prices will affect the impact we will have for sales and marketing. We will
have to look at the elasticity demand for our cable service because lowering cost will generate more
total revenues (Kotler & Keller, 2012, pg.392). According

primarily off Nancy Cartwright's pervious experiences in life, seeing how the movie loosely mimics
a portrait portrayal of herself. The speech took place on September 22, at the Schoonover Center.
This location was a very effective place to hold the event since Schoonover center is the home of the
school of Media Arts and Studies, a program Nancy briefly attended during her days at Ohio
University. The crowd was primarily composed of media studies students eager to hear a working
professional's outlook on making a movie. This was pretty powerful because she did not have to
establish relevancy to the crowd, the audience knew what the speech was going to include, and that
is why they attended. Her presentation overall was a persuasive speech. Persuasive speeches have a
proposition, or statement of purposed change (Hosek, 2017 P. 131). Nancy wanted to strengthen the
beliefs and attitudes the viewers held regarding looking at themselves as artists. The reason her
speech is a persuasive speech is Nancy intended to really motivate the audience to invest time in
their own visions. She

Disparate Treatment And Discrimination
Abstract
This paper explores the discriminatory practices of employers. In this paper I explain what
employment discrimination means and how a business can violate an employee' rights. Some of
those rights that I explore are age discrimination, race and color discrimination, and discrimination
based on sex, one's gender. As I explain the two theories of disparate treatment and disparate impact,
I support those with several case laws for further understanding of those laws. Knowing that these
laws heavily affect business decisions, I propose a solution that many businesses are using and that
some may need to start using. The proposed solutions seek to explain why it can alleviate the
distrust and fear of the laws for businesses.
Employment Discrimination
The laws that exist today regarding equal employment are used to protect individuals from
discriminatory acts from their employers or co–workers on the job. The two theories that mostly
affect business decisions are the disparate treatment and disparate impact. These two theories allows
individuals to file claims against employers for discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex,
age, equal pay, disabilities, national origin and so forth. To oversee these theories of practice, the
EEOC was put into place, making sure that businesses understood the underlying principles of the
law regarding discriminatory practices and enforced the law where it was necessary. However, no
law is met without fear and

The Pros And Cons Of Monopolies
Many companies and people have committed monopolies before they were illegal and even after it.
A monopoly is when one person has complete control over a company and makes close to 100% of
the profits but because of the The Sherman Antitrust Act passed on April 8, 1890, "combination in
the form of trust and otherwise, conspiracy in restraint of trade." In simple terms the act prohibited
any forms of monopoly in business and marketing fields. Monopolies committed before the Act,
making it legal in every way but unethical, by some of the famously known marketers like John D.
Rockefeller making him filthy rich. While others committed after The Sherman Antitrust Act caused
a company like Microsoft to be sued and have a bruised ego. John D. Rockefeller became one of the
richest men in America in his time due to his top position in Standard Oil and the monopoly he
created. Rockefeller was born in Richford, New York and moved to Ohio at 14 years old. Unafraid
of work the, the young 20 year old thrived at his job and by the end of the year made $450,000. In
the early 1860s, Rockefeller sensed an opportunity in the oil business. Cornelius Vanderbilt called
Rockefeller up, thinking he could take advantage of the newly built business man. Though
Vanderbilt was tough, Rockefeller was ruthless. Rockefeller was supposed to be on a train to meet
Vanderbilt one morning, but was running late and missed it which spared his life because the train
fell off its tracks. Rockefeller was a new man and felt as though God was on his side. Rockefeller
realized the success in the oil business and how much people like Vanderbilt needed his oil and took
it to his advantage. Everything Rockefeller had done when it came to his position in the oil business
led to America's first monopoly or "trust" that served as a guideline for other businesses behind him.
Standard Oil's moves were quick to sweep control of almost all of the refineries in Cleveland in just
two years. With Standard Oil's size and control in the region it made favorable deals with railroads
to ship its oils. At the same time, Standard got into another business with a purchase of terminals
and pipelines which set up a system to transport its own product. The business got

The Book, Hidden America By Jeanne Marie Laskas
Right Under My Nose In the book, Hidden America by Jeanne Marie Laskas, I noticed many themes
throughout. Perhaps the most important theme that occurred to me was the fact that many of these
stories were happening right here in my home state. Throughout three different chapters I truly came
to the realization that many situations to do with my life, are possible purely because of the workers
in the stories; not only around the world but in places I frequent. The three chapters I chose were:
"Underworld", "G–L–O–R–Y", and "Sputter". All of these stories were based in Ohio and I think
that has a lot to say about how oblivious we are as a community to the people that work to make our
lives how they are today. My grandparents have owned a lake cottage in Piedmont, Ohio since
before I was born. Ever since I was baby I have traveled the one and a half hour drive to our cottage.
As I grew older, I took in the scenery and the little towns along the way. One sleepy little farm town
in particular we drive through, seventeen minutes away from the lake, is called Cadiz; also known
as the town that hosts the Hopedale Mining Coal Company. Yet, I never even knew until eighteen
years later that a coal mining operation is stationed there.
In the chapter, "Underworld", the author asks the true purpose of coal mines. After getting a
sarcastic joke from a worker, she writes, "Every time we flip on a switch, we burn a lump of coal,
each of us consuming about twenty pounds of those lumps a

Why The Song 'We Didn T Start The Fire'
The song "We Didn't Start The Fire" is naming the things that happened in the
50's and 60's. Like when they started experimenting by launching monkeys into space to see what
the outcome would be before they launched a human. Also, other legends he mentioned were
Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Robinson plus many other celebrities. In my opinion Marilyn and
Jackie Robinson stuck out to me the most. They were "trend setters" they helped younger kids think
they had a chance to make it too. I really think that this song is one of a kind. It really got me to
think about what happened in the past.

Standard Oil And Its Effects On The United States
Standard Oil was the United States' first monopoly, and it was a rollercoaster of a ride for the
company. Standard Oil started from the ground up and grew into a massive enterprise, that would
eventually make John D. Rockefeller the richest man in the world. This would come at a price, the
demise of Standard Oil, but multiple companies are born out of the demise of Standard Oil that
become some of the largest oil companies today. Standard Oil even caused the United States of
America to create a federal act to try and control monopolies from eliminating competition in
unethical ways, and from becoming so powerful that they can control not just their markets, but
other markets too, and from having the ability to change the price on consumers ... Show more

This trust was an alternative form for a monopoly, and other companies began to use this "trust"
form of business in order to create giant monopolies in their independent markets. Standard Oil's
sales continued to increase, and the company began to acquire smaller companies to continue their
rapid growth. When Rockefeller would acquire smaller companies, he would completely shut down
the ones he believed were inefficient and keep the ones that he thought he could bring up to his
caliber of quality. Unfortunately for the workers from the companies that were shut down, they were
put out of work. Rockefeller also began to warehouse oil products in order to have more control
over the oil market by having the ability to possess large amounts of oil. Rockefeller had the ability
to send in oil, or hold the oil in the warehouses which could cause a riff in the oil market. In order to
acquire more business from customers Rockefeller struck a deal with Lake Shore Railroad, to give
Standard Oil a 71% discount in return for a promise to ship at least 60 carloads of oil daily and to
handle the loading and unloading. This move cut the throats of smaller refineries because they could
not produce enough oil fast enough to be able to be offered discounts by railroad companies like
Rockefeller did. These deals that Rockefeller had in place allowed

Ethics : Ethics And Ethics
INTRODUCTION
What Is 'Ethics'? Ethics is the concern that humans have always had for figuring out how best to live
(Shannon Vallor, 2011). The philosopher Socrates is quoted as saying in 399 B.C., "the most
important thing is not life, but the good life (Aristotle, 2011). It was defined generally as a system of
moral principles, by which human actions are judged right or wrong. the rules of conduct
recognized in respect of a society of human actions (Debridge, 2000). The study of ethics can be
found in many various places in our daily life. This report focuses on Engineering Ethics and
summarizes an incident where some Canons of Engineering Ethics were neglected which lead to a

This fuel came in the form of liquid gas as it was determined earlier that more gas could be stored if
it was liquefied. At No. 2 works (the gas plant yard), there were four tanks – three globular and one
cylindrical which all held millions of gallons of liquid natural gas. These were all tanks located on
the ground surface. (Digital, 2004)
Stakeholders
The stakeholders involved in this incident are the East Ohio Gas Company, the gas company in
question; the affected Cleveland residents and the Pittsburgh–Des Moines Company, the tank
designers.
Causes
Even though the real cause of the explosion was never ascertained, the stories vary. The last tank
was designed to have a cylindrical shape believed to hold more natural gas, while the others were
spherical. This was based on advice from Pittsburgh– Des Moines Company. (McElroy, 2012).
Eventually, some people saw vapor leaking from one of the gas tanks in No.2 works. This escaped
gas mixed with the oxygen in the surroundings and became combustible. A spark is believed to have
ignited the gaseous mixture and caused the fatal explosion which eventually set off another
explosion. Others believe that the shortage of materials due to the ongoing World War 2 might have
led to different materials such as alloys used to construct the cylindrical tank. It was suggested that
the quality of materials used for the construction

Despite the added cost of the HeartCheck EBCT test, they were seeing success in the market.
One strategy change I would've considered early on was not applying all resources of their
technology into one area.
NeoMed Technologies should've considered applying their initial product development to the
technology of screening for drugs, drug delivery applications or detecting cancer. These areas
would've possibly allowed for a quick to market product, without the additional approvals, quality
standards applied in the medical equipment space, and FDA approvals needed. Bringing a simpler
product to market first could've brought in revenue to fund the long–term product focus of a CAD
screen system. The profits from a drug screening or drug delivery product could've assisted in
funding their long–term product focus, they missed an opportunity to develop a quick revenue
steam.
In addition, NeoMed Technologies could've seen success early on in the Homeland Defense space,
for detection of nuclear weapons, or dirty bombs. With the shift later in Venture Capital funding
opportunities, they could've experienced success in this area as well.
Bottom–line, they put all their eggs in one basket; they failed to have a backup product to develop a
quick revenue stream to further fund their long–term goal. However, without a crystal ball that was
a difficult decision.
There were clear signs of shifts in

developed another invention. This invention was much different from his hair straightener. Morgan
called it a Safety Hood and patented it as a Breathing Device, but the world would later come to
know it as a Gas Mask. The Safety Hood consisted of a hood worn over someone's head. A tube
stemmed from this hood reaching the ground and allowing in clean air. The bottom of the tube was
lined with a sponge type material that would help to filter incoming air. Another tube allowed the
user to exhale air out of the device. Morgan intended the device to be used in fighting fires. He
wanted it to help firemen enter houses thick with smoke and breathe freely for some time.
The National Safety Device Company, of which Morgan was General Manager, was set up to
manufacture and sell the device. The Safety Hood was demonstrated at various exhibitions across
the country. At the Second International Exposition of Safety and Sanitation, the device won first

of the product would come only under real life circumstances.

Do Direct International Flights Represent A Regional...
Do Direct International Flights Represent a Regional Development Opportunity in a Global
Economy?
1. INTRODUCTION
Does having access to direct international flights impact the attraction of foreign direct investment
(FDI) and the strength of a local and regional economy? This paper attempts to answer this question
through a two–phased research project: 1) a literature review, and 2) a case study of a possible direct
international flight from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport located in Northeast Ohio to
Frankfurt, Germany. The choice of international flight was based on the existence of German
companies in Northeast Ohio, particularly in the automotive industry, the region's potential to attract
German companies, and the available connections between Frankfurt and other destinations in the
world.
The relationship between FDI and air connectivity should not be considered static. This relationship
depends on the time period in question. The focus of this paper is the recent phase of globalization
following the invention of the internet, creation of the European Union single market, and the North
American Free Trade Agreement. While the globalization phenomenon is not new, the relationship
between cities, multinational activities and economic growth has been largely redefined in this
phase. In today's world, the scale and performance of large cities cannot be understood without

him to lose all of his body hair, because of this he began to wear wigs. Local doctors suggested that
he not work so much. As successful as Rockefeller and his oil business were, success almost always
brings envy and hate.
During this time period muckrakers were very popular. Rockefeller and his oil company was a huge
target for these journalists. They loved to write about his disgusting corporate greed and disagreed
with how he ran his company. These muckrakers believed that it was unjust how Rockefeller
expanded. To attempt to counter this, the United Stated Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act.
This act prohibited trusts, such as Rockefeller's Standard Oil business. Within just two years

After the downfall of the Standard Oil Trust, Rockefeller had amassed so much money that he

History Of Paternalistic And Maternalistic Views On...

  • 1. History of Paternalistic and Maternalistic Views on... Throughout history, a woman's role was clearly defined to be a mother and dutiful wife to her husband. There was a time where women were considered to be less intelligent than men simply because they were women. However, this changed during the nineteenth century. Although women were still considered to be defined as mothers, they also sought out work as workers in factories and became more than just mothers and wives. In the nineteenth century, there was a shift in the view of women. They were given more of an education in order to prepare their sons to become better citizens. The reason was because the men had realized that woman needed to be better educated to teach the values of a good member of society to their children. This took ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Barton 2011) "As Dohash et al state, they were 'based on the assumption that females needed a firm paternalistic hand to guide their development' (1986: 72). Likewise, referring to the Glasgow Penitentiary for prostitutes, Mahood notes that inmates were reformed through 'a strict regime of "mild, whole– some, paternalistic Christian discipline"' (1990: 78). And I myself remarked that refor– matories were often utilised by fathers and husbands as a last attempt to '.. .assert some paternalistic control over their wayward females' (Barton 2005: 69)." (Barton 2011). In the analyses of female reformers, their honest compassion and humanitarian intentions were occasionally unnoticed. (Barton 2011) "As Lewis (1992) has argued the work they undertook was often harsh, laborious and, in the con– text of an institution like the Refuge, undoubtedly challenging." (Barton 2011). In the case of some female reformers, their desire to help others by doing things well and having good relationships with the women that were under their care was genuine. However, this does not give any reason as to understand the detached, almost impatient attitude that was seen to permeate the formal records of the institution. (Barton 2011) In spite of this, the reformatory was actually a community that strived to have an idealized conception of the middle class Victorian family (Barton 2011). Therefore, the execution and mundane inquiry of routines of both ethical and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Influence Of Accordin Management At The Lincoln Electric... The Lincoln Electric Company Organizational Culture The continued influence of founder James Lincoln's values and belief system is visible throughout every aspect of the organizational culture at the Lincoln Electric Company. Although James Lincoln believed that businesses should follow Christian morality, he did not impose religion on any of the employees. Instead, his beliefs are reflected in the company's policy of always placing the customer first, and its view that this practice is not only morally correct, but also beneficial to the company's economic success –– which has been proven true. James Lincoln also introduced the use of an Advisory Board, consisting of employees elected by peers, which meets with the CEO twice a month to discuss company operations and provide input on ways to make the company more successful, often by focusing on improving employee experiences. Through suggestions to management, this Advisory Board has been responsible for helping to implement the many policies and programs that have lead to the Lincoln Electric Company's remarkable and steady success since 1935. One of the many strikingly successful aspects of the culture in this company is the extremely low turnover rate, and the promise of job stability for employees. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Employees are encouraged to share ideas and feedback with the Advisory Board, but this input is simply used to craft recommendations for the head management. In the end, management has total control over decisions and any course of action. As a result of the strong focus on personal responsibility for professional success, employees require much less supervision from managers than in comparable companies. This allows management to focus on the less tangible aspects of running a business, such as financing for company expenditures (which is done almost exclusively through use of internal revenue), sales, and concerns of ... • 3. John D. Rockefeller: The World's First Billionaire John D. Rockefeller, the World's First Billionaire. In his childhood, John Rockefeller was the second of 6 children. His father was often gone, he was a traveling salesman as well a bigamist, and was said to have children with his wife along with his midwife. His mother worked hard in her husband's absence, providing food and support for her seemingly fatherless children. As a kid, Rockefeller was very intelligent, and made extra money by raising turkeys, selling sweets, and doing paid labor for neighbors. In 1853 his family moved to the Cleveland, Ohio, area, where John attended high school, and very briefly, college. In 1855 at age 16, he worked as a clerk at a Cleveland commission that bought, sold and shipped grain, coal, along with other similar household objects like those. He was said to have celebrated the day when he got his first job, considering it more important than his actual birthday. In 1859, Rockefeller along with his partner established their own commission firm, and in the same same year, America's first oil well was drilled in Pennsylvania. In 1863, Rockefeller and several partners entered the new booming oil industry by investing in an oil refinery in Cleveland. Influence Of An Organization 's Culture "The factors that are most important in the creation of an organization's culture include founders' values, preferences, and industry demands." – (Carpenter, M., Taylor, B., Erdogan, B. (2009)) Influence of the Founders of the Company (Golden Rule) General Manager and vice–president of the Lincoln Company, John C. Lincoln, made sure to incorporate his personal religious beliefs in the company motto. He did not, however, force his beliefs on his employees or the public. Using his Christian beliefs as guidelines to running the company successfully was his goal as he wanted to incorporate the simple good natured values he was taught in life to running his company. Since then, the following and current president of the company, Mr. Willis, has continued these values and upheld the company's original motto. James Lincoln felt that customers were their priority, not the stockholders. Customers were the "raison d 'etre" (The most important reason or purpose for someone or something's existence) for every company, since without customers they would be nothing. This is reflected in Lincoln 's policy to "at all times price on the basis of cost and at all times keep pressure on our cost..." Lincoln 's goal, often stated, is "to build a better and better product at a lower and lower price." (Arthur Sharplin (1996)) Keeping the main focus on the customer has allowed the company to continue to grow and keep the values of the Lincoln brothers alive to this day. The Incentive Management ... Small area analysis is appropriate for certain situations, however, it is not appropriate when comparing to a larger Medicare database concerning outliers. For example small area studies help with determining disparities in healthcare, or assisting with determining where to allocate resources, or looking at what other factors into why a condition is worsening. First implemented in 1985 by Aetna (previously U.S. Healthcare), P4P programs were used to reward top performers and improve outcomes (Bruno, 2012). The incentives were meant to improve the quality of patient care by basing incentives on patient outcomes. Conversely, fee–for–service reimbursements are based on the treatments and set limits on the amount reimbursed for services. Because of these limits, incentives for use of pharmaceuticals and non–invasive procedures can impact how physicians practice. Financial incentives play a significant role in how care is provided. The North Ohio Heart Center was found to perform more angioplasties compared to the Cleveland Clinic performing bypass surgeries resulting in different incentive rates (McLaughlin & McLaughlin, 2015). These non–invasive procedures (angioplasties) generated highly profitable incomes for the physicians involved at the North Ohio Heart Center. The physicians perceived these procedures to be a safer option of treatment as opposed to drug treatment or bypass surgery. These decisions impacted patient care by causing more patient visits and more tests being performed generating a cumulative higher reimbursement. These incentives are moving us away from what is best for the patient. • 6. What Is Rockefeller's First Oil Industry? In 1853, the Rockefeller family moved to the Cleveland, Ohio, area, where John attended high school then briefly studied bookkeeping at a commercial college. It was the very first moment young John Rockefeller stepped into the world of business. In 1859, Rockefeller went into the produce commission business with a partner, Maurice B. Clark, and they raised $4,000. That same year, America's first oil well was drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania. The oil price at that time stayed unaffordably high since the industry was in infant level, demand wasn't very high and, most importantly, the technology at that time couldn't efficiently refine the crude oil. In 1863, Rockefeller and several partners entered the new oil industry by investing in a Cleveland refinery. Unlike other oil companies searching for another well, Rockefeller and his partners focused on the efficiency of refining process and its byproducts. They could stabilize the oil price, and could have price predominance to other companies. The timing was also perfect. The war was ending, the vibe of great expansion was booming and it was based on the expansion of railroad and oil–fueled economy. Unification was essential if the oil business was to be sparred recurring periods of chaos and prostration.(6) Probably the most effective secret deals done by Rockefeller and his partners were with the railroads. Rockefeller saw that he could not compete with the refineries in New York, Philadelphia, and oil cities unless he could even up the conditions by freight concession. He demanded a lower rate by asking for a rebate from Michigan Central Railroad.(7) These "in harmony" deals meant those refineries and oil traders not "in harmony" with Standard Oil would find that railroads would refuse to move their oil, whatever the price. • 22. Disparate Treatment And Discrimination Abstract This paper explores the discriminatory practices of employers. In this paper I explain what employment discrimination means and how a business can violate an employee' rights. Some of those rights that I explore are age discrimination, race and color discrimination, and discrimination based on sex, one's gender. As I explain the two theories of disparate treatment and disparate impact, I support those with several case laws for further understanding of those laws. Knowing that these laws heavily affect business decisions, I propose a solution that many businesses are using and that some may need to start using. The proposed solutions seek to explain why it can alleviate the distrust and fear of the laws for businesses. Employment Discrimination The laws that exist today regarding equal employment are used to protect individuals from discriminatory acts from their employers or co–workers on the job. The two theories that mostly affect business decisions are the disparate treatment and disparate impact. These two theories allows individuals to file claims against employers for discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age, equal pay, disabilities, national origin and so forth. • 25. The Pros And Cons Of Monopolies Many companies and people have committed monopolies before they were illegal and even after it. A monopoly is when one person has complete control over a company and makes close to 100% of the profits but because of the The Sherman Antitrust Act passed on April 8, 1890, "combination in the form of trust and otherwise, conspiracy in restraint of trade." In simple terms the act prohibited any forms of monopoly in business and marketing fields. Monopolies committed before the Act, making it legal in every way but unethical, by some of the famously known marketers like John D. Rockefeller making him filthy rich. While others committed after The Sherman Antitrust Act caused a company like Microsoft to be sued and have a bruised ego. John D. Rockefeller became one of the richest men in America in his time due to his top position in Standard Oil and the monopoly he created. Rockefeller was born in Richford, New York and moved to Ohio at 14 years old. Unafraid of work the, the young 20 year old thrived at his job and by the end of the year made $450,000. In the early 1860s, Rockefeller sensed an opportunity in the oil business. Cornelius Vanderbilt called Rockefeller up, thinking he could take advantage of the newly built business man. Though Vanderbilt was tough, Rockefeller was ruthless. Rockefeller was supposed to be on a train to meet Vanderbilt one morning, but was running late and missed it which spared his life because the train fell off its tracks. Rockefeller was a new man and felt as though God was on his side. Rockefeller realized the success in the oil business and how much people like Vanderbilt needed his oil and took it to his advantage. Everything Rockefeller had done when it came to his position in the oil business led to America's first monopoly or "trust" that served as a guideline for other businesses behind him. Standard Oil's moves were quick to sweep control of almost all of the refineries in Cleveland in just two years. With Standard Oil's size and control in the region it made favorable deals with railroads to ship its oils. At the same time, Standard got into another business with a purchase of terminals and pipelines which set up a system to transport its own product. The business got ... • 26. The Book, Hidden America By Jeanne Marie Laskas Right Under My Nose In the book, Hidden America by Jeanne Marie Laskas, I noticed many themes throughout. Perhaps the most important theme that occurred to me was the fact that many of these stories were happening right here in my home state. Throughout three different chapters I truly came to the realization that many situations to do with my life, are possible purely because of the workers in the stories; not only around the world but in places I frequent. The three chapters I chose were: "Underworld", "G–L–O–R–Y", and "Sputter". All of these stories were based in Ohio and I think that has a lot to say about how oblivious we are as a community to the people that work to make our lives how they are today. My grandparents have owned a lake cottage in Piedmont, Ohio since before I was born. Ever since I was baby I have traveled the one and a half hour drive to our cottage. As I grew older, I took in the scenery and the little towns along the way. One sleepy little farm town in particular we drive through, seventeen minutes away from the lake, is called Cadiz; also known as the town that hosts the Hopedale Mining Coal Company. Yet, I never even knew until eighteen years later that a coal mining operation is stationed there. In the chapter, "Underworld", the author asks the true purpose of coal mines. After getting a sarcastic joke from a worker, she writes, "Every time we flip on a switch, we burn a lump of coal, each of us consuming about twenty pounds of those lumps a ... • 30. Standard Oil And Its Effects On The United States Standard Oil was the United States' first monopoly, and it was a rollercoaster of a ride for the company. Standard Oil started from the ground up and grew into a massive enterprise, that would eventually make John D. Rockefeller the richest man in the world. This would come at a price, the demise of Standard Oil, but multiple companies are born out of the demise of Standard Oil that become some of the largest oil companies today. Standard Oil even caused the United States of America to create a federal act to try and control monopolies from eliminating competition in unethical ways, and from becoming so powerful that they can control not just their markets, but other markets too, and from having the ability to change the price on consumers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This trust was an alternative form for a monopoly, and other companies began to use this "trust" form of business in order to create giant monopolies in their independent markets. Standard Oil's sales continued to increase, and the company began to acquire smaller companies to continue their rapid growth. When Rockefeller would acquire smaller companies, he would completely shut down the ones he believed were inefficient and keep the ones that he thought he could bring up to his caliber of quality. Unfortunately for the workers from the companies that were shut down, they were put out of work. Rockefeller also began to warehouse oil products in order to have more control over the oil market by having the ability to possess large amounts of oil. Rockefeller had the ability to send in oil, or hold the oil in the warehouses which could cause a riff in the oil market. In order to acquire more business from customers Rockefeller struck a deal with Lake Shore Railroad, to give Standard Oil a 71% discount in return for a promise to ship at least 60 carloads of oil daily and to handle the loading and unloading. This move cut the throats of smaller refineries because they could not produce enough oil fast enough to be able to be offered discounts by railroad companies like Rockefeller did. At No. 2 works (the gas plant yard), there were four tanks – three globular and one cylindrical which all held millions of gallons of liquid natural gas. These were all tanks located on the ground surface. (Digital, 2004) Stakeholders The stakeholders involved in this incident are the East Ohio Gas Company, the gas company in question; the affected Cleveland residents and the Pittsburgh–Des Moines Company, the tank designers. Causes Even though the real cause of the explosion was never ascertained, the stories vary. The last tank was designed to have a cylindrical shape believed to hold more natural gas, while the others were spherical. This was based on advice from Pittsburgh– Des Moines Company. (McElroy, 2012). Eventually, some people saw vapor leaking from one of the gas tanks in No.2 works. This escaped gas mixed with the oxygen in the surroundings and became combustible. A spark is believed to have ignited the gaseous mixture and caused the fatal explosion which eventually set off another explosion. Others believe that the shortage of materials due to the ongoing World War 2 might have led to different materials such as alloys used to construct the cylindrical tank. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite the added cost of the HeartCheck EBCT test, they were seeing success in the market. One strategy change I would've considered early on was not applying all resources of their technology into one area. NeoMed Technologies should've considered applying their initial product development to the technology of screening for drugs, drug delivery applications or detecting cancer. These areas would've possibly allowed for a quick to market product, without the additional approvals, quality standards applied in the medical equipment space, and FDA approvals needed. Bringing a simpler product to market first could've brought in revenue to fund the long–term product focus of a CAD screen system. The profits from a drug screening or drug delivery product could've assisted in funding their long–term product focus, they missed an opportunity to develop a quick revenue steam. In addition, NeoMed Technologies could've seen success early on in the Homeland Defense space, for detection of nuclear weapons, or dirty bombs. With the shift later in Venture Capital funding opportunities, they could've experienced success in this area as well. INTRODUCTION Does having access to direct international flights impact the attraction of foreign direct investment (FDI) and the strength of a local and regional economy? This paper attempts to answer this question through a two–phased research project: 1) a literature review, and 2) a case study of a possible direct international flight from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport located in Northeast Ohio to Frankfurt, Germany. The choice of international flight was based on the existence of German companies in Northeast Ohio, particularly in the automotive industry, the region's potential to attract German companies, and the available connections between Frankfurt and other destinations in the world. The relationship between FDI and air connectivity should not be considered static. This relationship depends on the time period in question. The focus of this paper is the recent phase of globalization following the invention of the internet, creation of the European Union single market, and the North American Free Trade Agreement. While the globalization phenomenon is not new, the relationship between cities, multinational activities and economic growth has been largely redefined in this phase.
