The Effects Of Underage Drinking
According to the New York Times, "More than 1,800 students die every year of alcohol–related
causes...600,000 are injured while drunk, and nearly 100,000 become victims of alcohol–influenced
sexual assaults"(Mcmurtrie). This is the case as many students in America find happiness in the
consumption of unhealthy amounts of alcohol and underage drinking. Unfortunately, these issues
have been more prevalent on college campuses, where students have formed a culture of abusing
alcohol. There seems to be no solution in sight as many college students fall victim to the
devastating effects of alcohol abuse and underage drinking despite the legal drinking age.
Regardless of the brutal effects of misusing alcohol, college students still continue to binge drink
and participate in underage drinking. This leads one to wonder the cause of this destructive
phenomenon. While some blame the minimum drinking age, others blame the society and the
ignorance of the college students. Although these factors may contribute, in reality, college students
in the U.S. tend to abuse alcohol because of their perception of alcohol and its consumption.
To begin with, students think of alcohol as helpful and necessary for social engagement. This is
because they are burdened with the societal pressure of fitting in when they get to college. They are
placed in a new environment, where they feel they have to get acquainted with their peers in order to
survive. In an article about college drinking, Dr. Jodi

The Problem Of Underage Drinking
Have you ever heard of underage drinking? Well, it's a serious problem that happens's every day.
Within this article, you will find all the problems that happen because of underage drinking. The
CDC ( Center for Disease Control) did a study on underage drinking it states. That "Alcohol is the
most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States". Also, the legal drinking
age is 21 and people 12 to 20 are 11% consumers of alcohol. Then before this study in 2010
drinking took 4,300 lives of youth each year. It's a proven fact that most underage drinkers consume
more drinks then adult drinkers. In 2010 189,000 emergency room visits were for underage drinkers
or condition dealing with underage drinkers. Then another study in 2015 had a survey that was given
to high school students showed 33% of students drank 18% binge drink 8% drove after drinking
20% rode with a driver who had drunk. High school students who drink are most likely to have
school problems, higher absence and poor or failing grades, social problems, fighting, lack of
participation in youth activities, legal problems, getting arrested for driving or physically hurting
someone while drunk, physical problems, hangovers or illnesses, unplanned, and unprotected sexual
activity.

alcohol problems. Including tolerance to alcohol's effects or may be directly linked to genetics. Like

Underage Drinking At Its Worst
Underage Drinking at its worst! One lesson I thought I would never have to learn as a teenager was
underage drinking, toothbrushes, and bunk beds do not mix! I was 16 years old in high school and I
had braces. I was going through my rebellious stage, I didn't think about things before I did them
and what kind of consciences my actions had. I played football and I had lots of friends. I had
friends who were jocks, theater geeks, nerds, and some friends who were the trouble makers of the
school. I went to parties a lot, I would drink and have a good old time that was until I had my
accident. My friend Stevie's parents were going out of town and we all knew what that meant, he
was going to have a party. We all had our jobs to do to prepare for it. Stevie had the house so he was
all set, another friend of mine was in charge of inviting everyone, and my job was to get the alcohol.
I had an older brother who would always buy my friends and I booze, so I went all out. I got beer in
bottles and in a keg, I got hard alcohol like whiskey, vodka, rum and all the mixers that you need for
a good underage drinking party. The party was going great everyone was having a blast! Everyone
showed up it was turning out to be the best party of the year. People showed up that we didn't even
invite, so they got charged at the door to cover the cost of the party. As the night went on and it was
getting late people were starting to leave, we started to wind down and clean up a little (as well as

The Fallacy Of Underage Drinking
Description of Flyer This flyer was created with young students in mind, but more specifically high
school level students. The flyer is arguing against underaged drinking and that if you even just take
a sip of alcohol, you then will instantly become addicted and will not attend college, due to your
addiction. I decided to use the slippery slope logical fallacy for my flyer. A slippery slope fallacy is
where someone may do something or an event will happen and the result of that is a drastic leap,
most likely the worst case that could happen, and it has no logical reasoning behind it and leaves out
all other elements in between. I decided to use the common issue of underage drinking as the topic
of my flyer. People can sometimes exaggerate

Underage Drinking Debate
Fort Collins has recently proposed an ordinance that aims at underage drinking. Through this
ordinance, party hosts will be liable for minors under the influence even if they did not supply the
alcohol. This social ordinance would result in a civil violation and fine for individuals who host a
party where underage drinking takes place.
I am in belief that this ordinance would do more harm than good in the Fort Collins community.
Executive director, Gordon Combes, said this ordinance would force party hosts to be more diligent
about preventing underage consumption. The problem with this argument is that the party host
cannot often control if the teen consumes alcohol. If this ordinance were passed, party hosts will be
inclined to not allow

"About 7.7 million Americans between ages 12–20 report current alcohol consumption; this
represents nearly 20% of this age group for whom alcohol consumption is illegal. Among 12–20
year olds, reported rates of past month consumption, binge drinking and heavy alcohol all declined
between 2006 and 2015" (2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health). Underage drinking is a
serious problem in society. Minors think it is "cool" to go to parties and drink with friends. The
consequences of doing so do not cross a minor's mind until it is too late. Peer pressure, modeling
parents' behavior, and curiosity all lead to underage drinking.
Peer pressure is a cause for underage drinking because minors want to fit in with the popular crowd.

There are several causes for underage drinking. Something as simple as a friend allowing another
friend that has not tried alcohol before to have a taste can turn in to underage drinking. "In the
United States, 20% of youth aged 12 to 20 years old drink alcohol" (National Survey on Drug Use
and Health). Underage drinking increases the risks for alcohol abuse or dependence increases.
"Youth who start drinking before age 15 years old are six times more likely to develop alcohol
dependence or abuse later in life than those who begin drinking at or after age 21 years old" (Center
for Disease Control). Underage drinking is an eerie thing to think about. It is so real in society and
has been for a long time. Though underage drinking is an active problem, the numbers have declined
in recent years. "54% decrease in underage drinking among 8th graders, 40% decrease in underage
drinking among 10th graders, and 25% decrease in underage drinking among 12th graders in the
past decade" (2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health). If underage drinking continues to
decline, underage drinking could possibly be gone before

What Is Underage Drinking?
Underage drinking is a serious public health problem in the United States. Alcohol is the most
widely used substance of abuse among America's youth, and drinking by young people poses
enormous health and safety risks. Young kids around the ages of 13–15, use drinking as an act of
socializing at parties. Drinking has caused a lot of damage in that area of events. Young teens also
experience "Binge drinking" which mostly occurs at parties such as sororities or just parties in
general. Binge drinking is the practice of consuming large quantities of alcohol in a single session.
Binge drinking is considered to be one of the most dangerous pattern of drinking. The symptoms

Underage Drinking From the stereotypical teen parties in the classic movies with the red solo cup,
and the "make sure you don't leave your cup sitting out like that" to pressuring one another "just
take a few sips, it won't hurt you" phrases. It's all fun and games, but what they don't show is the
aftermath and how behind it all is the issues that ends all the fun and games of drinking and being
drunk. They miss the part showing the effects mentally/physical issues with your body, and all the
accidents and the innocent people that end up injured from just that one little sip to a few cups that
your so called close friend offered explaining "you'll be fine", to when you realize what things could
actually happen to you could effect your whole life. Teens dont understand what actually happens
while being under the influence of alcohol. I feel there is always a solution to things like this
situation being responsible, paying attention to what goes in your drinks, and not driving while
intoxicated. "Underage drinking is a risk that attracts many developing adolescents and teens. When

On the morning of February 21st, college students found 18–year–old Ali Quartaro lifeless on the
floor of a famed party house. The night before, she had consumed large amounts of hard liquor until
she had passed out. While she lay unconscious for hours, others continued to party around her,
afraid to obtain her help. All because of a night of binge drinking, Ali's freshman year at the
University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee ended grimly. The loss devastated her inconsolable mother
who did not even know her daughter drank. Unfortunately, all it takes is one night of binge drinking
of alcohol to become a killer. The true extent of the dangers of alcohol is unknown to the majority of
people. Although alcohol does not seem that vile of a substance, it is extremely deadly both ... Show

Later on in the novel, Ellen struggles with alcohol because she uses it as a coping device. Her
drinking ends up harming her mental state worse until Anna is able to pull her out of it. Alcohol is a
highly addictive and lethal substance that damages those who abuse it physically and mentally,
especially through the actions of drunk driving and underage drinking. As a result of extreme
alcohol usage, the body becomes impaired. The physical effects come in a wide variety of types, but
all shorten the life of the user considerably. Internally, alcohol mutilates organs such as the heart and
liver while externally, alcohol causes weight gain and the dehydration of your skin causing it to look
blotchy. In the heart, alcohol weakens the muscles which can cause heart failure. Additionally, high
blood pressure or hypertension often occurs which increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Because of long term alcohol use, arrhythmia or an irregular heartbeat can occur. Sudden deaths are
often the result of an arrhythmia. Another organ affected is the lungs. Oftenly, alcoholics are more

College students are most challenging to educate on alcoholism and alcohol abuse because of early
drinking patterns set at an early age. Health care costs for families with an alcoholic individual are
twice as those compared to families without one. FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) is one of the top 3
causes for birth defects and/or abnormalities.
What are the impacts of the social issue on the community–at–large? The effects of alcohol don't
just affect the person consuming it, but also those who haven't drank. Alcohol abuse links to many
social troubles like sexual assaults and drunk driving accidents that result in the deaths of strangers.
Alcohol has a negative effect on society financially, the cost of uncontrolled alcohol abuse being
249 billion dollars (2010). Other costs contributed to alcohol abuse is the loss in workplace
efficiency, health care costs for treating abusers, law enforcement and criminal costs, and drunken
motor vehicle accidents.
Are any social groups excluded from the issue? Alcohol and it's abuse can affect any social group
because decisions and actions vary on individual choices being made. The only other reasons that
could affect an individual's choice and choices would be if they were forbidden to do it or it was
against a rule or law, which could exclude cultural and religious social groups from it's

Teenage Alcoholism
Underage drinking has become an immense problem in the U.S. There are many reasons that lead
kids under the age of twenty–one to drink. CNN states that " Only a sip early on in life could be a
problem later on in life" (CNN News). This quote states that having that one drink as an underage
drinker won't just affect you then, but it will affect your life later on. Our country has come to
realize that we have a problem with teenage alcoholism; schools inform their students about this

Drinking alcohol when you're a teen develops brain problems, your brain is developing until your in

pleasure center in the brain. Drinking relaxes you and releases endorphins throughout the body
causing teens to easily get addicted. Drinking alcohol causes you to make poor decisions which
results in risky behavior. For example, Alcohol increases the risks for physical and sexual assault.
Drinking puts you more at a risk to be a victim of assault or even commit it. Alcohol doesn't just
make the risks for assault increase, it also ruins your life. Alcohol ruins relationships between people
who care about you. "I have destroyed two relationships because I hurt them so much through my

The Dangers Of Underage Drinking
Today, alcohol use continues to be regarded by many people, as a normal part of growing up. The
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism published a large number of national surveys,
research, and stories having to deal with this growing issue. One of the largest problems that all
researchers, which started studies of underage drinking, needed to know why young kids start
drinking in the first place. The answer given by a large number of kids has to do with the
environment they are in and the acceptance of their peers. Yet an environment where underage
drinking is allowed, or taking place, is dangerous, not only for the teenager drinking but also for
everyone around them as well as society as a whole. This is evident by the number of alcohol–
involved motor vehicle crashes, homicides, suicides, and other injuries. With many national
campaigns (We Don't Serve Teens and STOP Underage
Drinking) now trying to decrease or bring an end to this "extracurricular activity" we are now seeing
an increasingly large amount of surveys and questioning taking place around the nation.
The U.S government should enforce a zero tolerance policy towards adolescents found drinking
under the legal age due to the physical, mental, and legal consequences alcohol can cause.
The physical consequences of underage drinking is not just cuts, scrapes, and bruises like people
think, but are likely to end up in serious, long term physical or paralyzing damage or even death.

It can be harmful to the body or it can be harmful to the people or surroundings of the abuser. It is a
very big mistake to abuse alcohol. Abusing alcohol can lead to alcohol poisoning which can result
death. Alcohol abuse can also cause someone to have short and long term effects to his brain and
body ("Teenage Drinking"). A person who drinks too much alcohol is more likely to commit violent
crimes such as assault, sexual assault, homicides, or even suicide ("Teenage Drinking"). Teenagers
are usually heavy drinkers because they usually take drinking lightly. Underage persons do not drink
as often as adults, but when underage drinkers drink, they drink a whole lot more at one time
("Teenage Drinking"). When teenagers drink alcohol they tend to binge drink. Binge drinking is
when a teenager consumes too much alcohol in a short amount of time. This usually means five or
six beers in only an hour or two. Binge drinking can cause harmful effects to the teen body, such as
alcohol poisoning which can lead to serious injury or death ("Teenage Drinking"). Abusing alcohol
can have short term as well as long term effects. These effects can be effects to the body or socially.
Long term effects include family problems, having trouble in school, not getting as much done on

Essay On Underage Drinking
Underage drinking has become one of the largest social issues among teenagers in America today.
Although more than half of high schoolers drink on a regular basis, the problem is that they're not
aware of how dangerous alcohol can actually be. The reality is that alcohol is often the cause of
many issues among many teenagers today. Simply saying alcohol is what's ruining many young
adults' lives. Drunk driving, clubs losing their licenses, and the individual losing control of their
own actions. Have you lost a close friend or family member from alcohol? The number of drunk
driving accidents from underage minors is rising. Another issue of alcohol is that it slows down the
reaction time and resulting in less control of the individuals' actions in accidents that occur when
under the influence of alcohol. The accidents range from motor vehicles, suicide, sexual assault, to
as simply as losing your balance and causing harm to yourself or others. Not only is this an

Now imagine your freshman year of high school. You get invited to that
huge senior party, so of course you go. There are a million different types

until finally you pass out. You are put, unconscious in a chair and the
party goes on. The next morning someone tries to wake you, but you won't

rushed into the ER and 10 minutes later are pronounced dead due to alcohol

This is how alcohol affects the teenagers of America today. It ruins
lives and not only the lives of those who drink. It affects their friends
and family. It even affects people they do not know, the thousands of people
that are killed each year by drunk drivers. Many teens think they are

There are those milestone ages that everyone is anxious to reach. We can't wait to be 13 because
we're finally considered "teenagers." We can't wait to turn 16 so we can finally slide behind the

independence. We can't wait to turn 18 because we're finally considered adults, can vote, and even
enlist in the military in order to serve our country if we choose. Finally, and most importantly it
seems, we can't wait to turn 21 so that we can legally drink alcohol. In fact, it seems that some teens
are so anxious about that last step to adulthood that some don't even wait until the legal drinking age
to consume alcohol. This has resulted in underage drinking

In this day and age, underage drinking is very much rampant among teenagers' ages 12 years old to

drinking. This is an issue that must be addressed for it possess a threat to the present generation and
the generations to come. An output of being liberated is the tendency for teenagers to frequently
socialize with a variety of people and this usually leads to influencing one another in various habits
and one common habit is alcohol drinking. Social factors like peer pressure, lack of guidance and a

A teenager on his or her crucial stages of development, have not fully developed the skill of decision
making. Thus pressure one feels from peers and the persistent exposure to the act can cause the
individual to eventually indulge in underage drinking for social acceptance. The struggle to fit in is
always a constant issue amongst our teenagers in this generation. And underage drinking has been a
status qualifier that signifies a person's dominance and liberation. This is why most peers would
encourage themselves to engage in such habits. Apart from that, without proper guidance and
supervision from parents or guardians, teenagers most likely are at risk to engage in underage
drinking. Without the reinforcement, they will grow up to believe that such habit is a form of mere
socialization and not a fatal grip for their future. Guidance is truly relevant. Without it, one day you
may realize the effect of underage drinking is very much morbid or worse, irreversible. Lastly, a
negative family environment is truly a major factor that molds a teen's young mind into what is
socially acceptable and what is not. If alcohol drinking is freely displayed at home, then this kind of
notion is most likely hardwired on the teenagers' subconscious mind causing him/her to be very
much okay with the set up. A negative family environment will most likely cause the individual to
engage in negative coping mechanisms: such as underage drinking. Based on the data the
researchers have collected and the survey conducted, the researchers conclude that social factors

Underage Drinking
Underage drinking is one of the most prevalent problems in the United States. This is a problem
because alcohol is an item that nobody under twenty–one years of age is allowed to purchase or
consume. People who are underage are punished by law when they consume or attempt to purchase
alcohol illegally. This makes people under twenty–one want alcohol even more. In other countries
where the legal minimum drinking age is lower, there are less problems because it gives parents the
push to teach their children how to drink responsibly. If at eighteen years old, someone can go to
war and vote for the future of our country, why not lower the legal drinking age of twenty–one to
eighteen years old? Lowering the drinking age would not only lower the rate of alcoholism, it would
also help make drinking safer for the youth, keep the youth out of trouble with the law, and keep the
youth from sneaking around trying to grasp their hands on a bottle of alcohol.
Lowering the legal drinking age would push parents to educate their children in drinking responsibly
earlier. Parents teaching their children how to drink in moderation would lead to safer college
campuses. Knowing how to drink in moderation is important because if you don't, it can lead to
dangerous circumstances. Because people who are underage have to sneak alcohol, there is some
sort of thrill from having to consume it covertly. Dwight B. Heath claims "Alcohol has no mystique.

results in males were negative, alcohol still had an effect on GPA. However, for females the

Alcohol often results in teens having risky sexual behavior. Rapings, unplanned pregnancies, HIV
infections, and sexually transmitted diseases are possible consequences of being intoxicated
(Walitzer). "In 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that nearly 50
percent of the 19 million new STD infections that occur every year involve young people between
the ages of 15 and 24" (Sydner 58). Most teens do not plan on having sex, however, drinking alcohol
impairs their judgement and sometimes it even leads to rape. It has been reported by the National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism that drinking played a role in more than 97,000 cases of
sexual assault or date rape on college campuses each year (Sydner 62). From all types of health
problems to the bad decisions one makes while under the influence such as drinking and driving, to
the depression and sadness it can bring. There are a countless number of effects it has on the body

Lastly, another solution would be to educate underage children about the dangers of drinking. Many

This doesn't come as much of a shock to me. Drinking is part of Nebraska's culture. Small Nebraska
towns are full of drinkers; even minors are allowed to participate. Even though I am from a small
town, I didn't drink until I was in college, and even then I did so in a responsible manner. My family
and friends never encouraged or participated in drinking, so I never really felt the need to. However,
the same can't be said for many of my high school peers.

The Problem Of Underage Drinking
Paying the Fiddler in Lives
In order to fully understand the threat that underage drinking poses to our country, it is important to
realize just how commonplace this sort of inebriation has become. As a result of the Youth Risk
Behavior Survey, a way of monitoring habits among teens, the Center for Disease Control (or CDC)
found that nearly thirty–five percent of students had consumed alcohol within one month of taking
the questionnaire (Adolescent 1). Statistics revealing widespread intoxication among minors are
inherently concerning, since each new drinker is another potential victim of alcohol poisoning,
dependence, or one of the many other dangers that drinkers face. Our reaction must be to actively
oppose this situation, because although dilemmas of this scale cannot be remedied overnight, and
conquering them is no simple task, we are all responsible for leading the charge. Alcohol–related
juvenile casualties have plagued this country for too long; in order to save our communities and
families from having to face this tragedy, progressive counseling efforts, extensive family outreach
and training programs, and a resounding cry for Medical Amnesty laws are the best ways to
diminish the death–toll. A major part of the difficulty in the fight against underage liquor
consumption is that, as the CDC statistic in the opening paragraph suggests, the practice has become
extremely widespread among our youth. In the year 2003 alone, roughly 7.4 million high schoolers

alcohol can interfere with this," explains Dr. John Shneerson. According to Dr. John Shneerson, the
alcohol that is being put into the body can put you into a deep sleep, but it misses out on the first
stage of sleep, called rapid eye movement. Teenagers between the ages of 14 and 16 that have
sleeping disorders were found that 50 percent of them are more likely to become addicted to
drinking. Another psychological effect of alcohol is the changes in the moods and personalities of
the teens who drinks. Normal personality traits can disappear during intoxication and can be replace
with selfish, angry, and egotistical behavior. Alcohol slows your brain's synapses down and
chemically alters your body by affecting serotonin levels, the chemical responsible for transmitting
signals of mood to your brain. These physical changes cause your emotions to get out of control and
cause you to say and do things you normally wouldn't do. Now there is one more effect that alcohol

alcohol poisoning. "Alcohol can enter the blood stream; binge drinkers can ingest a fatal dose of
alcohol before passing out." ("Binge Drinking Can Be Fatal"). The legal minimum age should not be

First of all, alcohol is a depressant, in other words it controls how slow your body functions. It could
alter with a person's movement, emotions, and vision. Alcohol impedes messages that your brain is
trying to receive. You are more relaxed depending on how much you drink. The more you drink the
more intoxicated you are and the more sick feeling you could get. Depending on the person, you
could either be an angry, friendly or maybe a sad drunk, making you act not yourself. When you
drink, you react to things slower, that's why people should not drive intoxicated. Consuming too
much alcohol in a short period of time can have a result of alcohol poisoning; the first symptom is
usually vomiting. Resulting more symptoms such as extreme fatigue, difficulty breathing, low blood
sugar, unconsciousness, or even death. Furthermore, there are aftereffects, known as a hangover, in
other terms, it's what happens after heavy drinking. An alcohol withdrawal can usually happen after
just four or five drinks to get a hangover, which typically happens several hours after your last drink.
These symptoms include headaches, nausea, fatigue, muscle pain, or mild anxiety. "When teenagers
do use alcohol they may not just be affecting their brain for that night or weekend, but for the next
80 years of their life." ("Henry Wechsler, PhD and Bernice Wuethrich").

that may indicate a teenager has been abusing alcohol. Major red flags include differences in sleep
patterns, appetite, and change of friends or physical appearance. When teens fall in with a social

There are so many people who have drank underage. Norah Piehl quotes, "According to a 1991
University of Michigan study 81% of students had had at least one alcoholic drink in their lives (13

anyway? Rob Nagel states, "Alcohol is a depressant that acts as a numbing agent on the central
nervous system." So drinking alcohol can slow down the central nervous system and can impair a
person's judgement. Another interesting fact from Rob is, "It is estimated that 75% of alcoholics are
male and 25% are female." Since there are statistics about underage drinking, there must be an

"Peer pressure, the social acceptability of drinking, and a desire to escape from emotional stress and
anxiety can all set the stage for a person 's descent into alcohol addiction." Peer pressure from others
can lead to underage drinking by the desire to fit in with the crowd. An interview was done with
Margaret Bezick and she told us, "If a family member is an alcoholic and they are around their kids,
it can lead to underage drinking. It lead to my brother drinking underage and becoming an
alcoholic." Similarly, a phrase from Rob Nagel supports this idea. "Children with a biological parent
who is an alcoholic are more likely to become alcoholics that are children who do not have an
alcoholic parent." Being around an alcoholic as a child will show a young child about the effects of
alcohol. They would grow up around that person, and think that drinking underage is the right thing
because of witnessing it as an innocent infant. Leanne Currie–McGhee has an interesting fact in her
book that says, "According to the CDC, people aged 12 to 20 drink 11 percent of all alcohol
consumed in the United States(pg 21 Currie–McGhee)". There are many causes of underage
drinking which have led to some short and long term effects.
There are many outcomes of underage drinking. First, is brain damage. According to Rob Nagel, "If

Risk taking occurs as researchers have shown because the brain continues to develop important
communication connections and further refines its function. During this time adolescents search for
situations that may be hazardous. Hereditary factors are also another cause of underage drinking.
Being a child of an alcoholic or having several alcoholic family members places a person at a high
risk for alcoholic problems. Environmental aspects, pinpointing a genetic contribution will not tell
the whole story as drinking behavior reflects a complex interplay between inherited and
environmental factors. By having parents who heavily drink and view it as favorable their children

What are the health problems that are associated with underage drinking? Alcohol affects how the

Underage Drinking in Australia
Underage drinking is rapidly becoming a widespread matter within Australia. It is considered to be a
serious problem not only nationally, but also globally wide. Underage drinking has climbed its way
up the ladder to one of the most common forms of substance use. "The health risks that accumulate
over a lifetime from alcohol increase progressively – this means that the more young people drink,
the greater the risk" (Windle, Spear, Fuligni, Angold, Drown, Pine, Smith, Giedd, Dahl 2009). Some
states within Australia do not have to deal with this problem nearly as much as others. These
teenagers are classified as underage drinkers because the national legal drinking age in Australia is
18 years of age – meaning they are still considered to be minors (Australian Alcohol Guidelines,
2009). For the purposes of this essay, the focus will be set on adolescences and alcohol. It will be
argued whether parental influence has an impact on teenagers present or future drinking habits.
Some research studies show relation from parental influence and upbringing of a child to underage
drinking (Ary, Tildesley, Hops, Andrews 1993). In this study conducted by Ary et al., 173 families
with two children were questioned. The object of the examination was to explore the attitudes and
beliefs parents were teaching their children about the consumption of alcoholic substances. Within

Underage Drinking Introduction Underage drinking has long been, and continues to be, a serious
public health concern. "Teen alcohol use kills more than 4700 people each year and high school
students who use alcohol or other drugs are five times more likely to drop out of school" (MADD,
2014) than kids who do not. There have been years of underage drinking prevention programs to
curtail the use of alcohol by those under 21 years of age and yet alcohol is the most widely used
drug by adolescents in the United States (Wagoner et al. 2012). Underage drinking is a real problem

2012). Because of the growing issue of parents supplying alcohol to minors, 35 of 50 states
currently have Social Host laws in effect. This means if an adult is supplying minors with alcohol in
their home, they can be arrested and charged. These laws are an attempt to decrease the number of
adults hosting underage parties and supplying alcohol to minors (Wagoner et al. 2012). In addition
to social host laws, laws concerning restricted licenses for teens and limiting teen driving at night
seem to have had an impact on underage drinking. Additionally, license suspension laws for alcohol
violations are making kids think twice before they consume alcohol and drive (Hingson, 2014). Yet
underage drinking remains a nationwide concern and must continue to be addressed. Methodology

Underage drinking is becoming more of a noticeable problem in society, not only with high school
students, but also with younger generations. Drinking is all over the television, the radio, and talked

generations. If our youth is educated at a younger age, if school policies were stricter, and if clubs
and bars cracked down on underage drinking the problem would not be as serious. Youth should be

females are easily passed off as legal drinking age regardless of what their I.D. says. From my three

from the bartenders despite their age. Walking into clubs females usually don't even get carded as
long as they are good looking they get the wristband. Clubs and bars should have females at the
front greeting because that would eliminate underage drinking. Also, I.D scanners would help
because there would no way of getting in with a fake I.D. If clubs and bars were stricter and had
better tools to prevent underage drinking this problem would decrease rapidly. In conclusion,
underage drinking affects should be taught at a younger age before the kids are exposed. Not only
should they be educated earlier but the schools policies should be stricter as well as college policies.

Underage Drinking On Fridays
Young people have continued to consume alcohol especially on weekends. Consequently, young
people have continued to experience the aftermath of drinking too much alcohol at the tender age.
As a result, most of the countries categorize underage drinking as the leafing problem in public
health. Teenagers always find a way to avoid being noticed by their parents. Even though it is their
choice, most initially know what they are doing is wrong, but do it anyways. The social choice
theory is vital when examining why young people make the decision to drink beer on Fridays when

"Automobiles are not ferocious.... it is man who is to be feared," as Robbins B. Stoeckel remarked,
enumerates a simple, yet fundamental concept– a vehicle in itself is a relatively safe, that is, until

fellow driver being impaired by the usage of alcohol; perhaps the only thing that may make such a
situation even more difficult and dangerous is one who is under the legal alcohol drinking age.
Fewer situations are more life threatening than when an underage driver has been illegally

Simply remarking that such a decision is dangerous fails to suffice as concrete evidence of the
negative effects of underage alcohol consumption, and so statistical evidence must be given.
Approximately five thousand underage drinkers die each year; the most prevalent cause is, not
surprisingly, motor vehicle accidents. What many do not understand is what other factors constitute
the other approximately three thousand; sixteen hundred to homicides, that is, murders and other
deliberate killings, as well as 300 to suicide, usually caused by an exacerbation of underlying
depression or other psychological difficulties. The remaining thousand are usually caused by such
grisly circumstances as falling, burning, and drowning. While this may seem a relatively small
number in the vast amounts of the twelve to twenty year old age group, estimates are that within the
past month one–quarter of underage persons used alcohol, while two–thirds of those were binge
drinkers. Not only does underage drinking increase the chance of dying in related incidents it
encourages other destructive behaviors: engage in sexual activities, carry a plethora of illegal

Underage Drinking In America
Underage drinking is a very eminent problem for Americans today. Some may not know that the
human brain continues to develop until the age of twenty–five. Underage drinking can weaken
neurological development, which could cause minors to make bad decisions, have memory loss,
slower thought processes, and even acquire irreversible brain damage. Drinking when your body
and mind are not fully developed can leave damaging effects on a person's social abilities,
neurological abilities, and overall health.
A youth's social abilities can be destroyed by underage drinking. Socialization skills are key when a
minor is growing up. A minor struggles to find their own independence and find themselves,
therefore creating a distance from family relationships and creating new bonds with peers. The
youth tend to try to be similar to each other to fit in with the rest, and as a result, children may be
pressured into drinking alcohol. When these minors start to drink heavily and frequently, they may
develop self esteem issues, depression, disorders, antisocial behavior, and anxiety. This makes
underage drinkers more withdrawn from their peers and families than their peers who choose not to
drink. Peers who don't drink do not tend to associate and be friends with the group of people that do
drink. This can lead to isolation and also disdain from those who do ... Show more content on

The Effects Of Underage Drinking

  • 1. The Effects Of Underage Drinking According to the New York Times, "More than 1,800 students die every year of alcohol–related causes...600,000 are injured while drunk, and nearly 100,000 become victims of alcohol–influenced sexual assaults"(Mcmurtrie). This is the case as many students in America find happiness in the consumption of unhealthy amounts of alcohol and underage drinking. Unfortunately, these issues have been more prevalent on college campuses, where students have formed a culture of abusing alcohol. There seems to be no solution in sight as many college students fall victim to the devastating effects of alcohol abuse and underage drinking despite the legal drinking age. Regardless of the brutal effects of misusing alcohol, college students still continue to binge drink and participate in underage drinking. This leads one to wonder the cause of this destructive phenomenon. While some blame the minimum drinking age, others blame the society and the ignorance of the college students. Although these factors may contribute, in reality, college students in the U.S. tend to abuse alcohol because of their perception of alcohol and its consumption. To begin with, students think of alcohol as helpful and necessary for social engagement. This is because they are burdened with the societal pressure of fitting in when they get to college. They are placed in a new environment, where they feel they have to get acquainted with their peers in order to survive. In an article about college drinking, Dr. Jodi ... Underage Drinking And Teenage Drinking Alex Wilmore Joshua James, Instructor ENG 111 07 July 2015 Underage Drinking "With such compelling information, the question is why haven 't we been able to do more to prevent the crisis of underage drinking? The answer is: rising the age to 25" is what Lucille Roybal–Allard once said, a U.S. Representative for serving in Congress since 1993. This statement has brought many to speculate of issues and debates. This expression opened the eyes of American people that often struggled to make this truth into a reality. It might be easy to believe that age laws lowered the deaths of the underage but there are still signs of its dreadful company in many pieces of American life. Families who choose to educate their children about underage drinking and driving, seem to have a higher chance of getting through with the child. These underage teens can face jail or death when they give drinking a chance and even attempt to drive, having a sexual intercourse or just plain out doing something out of the teen's element. There are few different methods of controlling the underage drinking and most of which the teachers, the parents and everyone who is willing to be involved. The underage drinking can be narrowed to two different opinions of effective methods of eliminating underage drinking: the first opinion being to have parental and teacher prevention methods and the second opinion being that regulating the alcohol assumption age to 25. • 5. The Problem Of Underage Drinking Have you ever heard of underage drinking? Well, it's a serious problem that happens's every day. Within this article, you will find all the problems that happen because of underage drinking. The CDC ( Center for Disease Control) did a study on underage drinking it states. That "Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States". Also, the legal drinking age is 21 and people 12 to 20 are 11% consumers of alcohol. Then before this study in 2010 drinking took 4,300 lives of youth each year. It's a proven fact that most underage drinkers consume more drinks then adult drinkers. In 2010 189,000 emergency room visits were for underage drinkers or condition dealing with underage drinkers. Then another study in 2015 had a survey that was given to high school students showed 33% of students drank 18% binge drink 8% drove after drinking 20% rode with a driver who had drunk. High school students who drink are most likely to have school problems, higher absence and poor or failing grades, social problems, fighting, lack of participation in youth activities, legal problems, getting arrested for driving or physically hurting someone while drunk, physical problems, hangovers or illnesses, unplanned, and unprotected sexual activity. Some of the behavioral and physiological factors tend to increase or decrease a person's risk for alcohol problems. Including tolerance to alcohol's effects or may be directly linked to genetics. • 7. Underage Drinking At Its Worst Underage Drinking at its worst! One lesson I thought I would never have to learn as a teenager was underage drinking, toothbrushes, and bunk beds do not mix! I was 16 years old in high school and I had braces. I was going through my rebellious stage, I didn't think about things before I did them and what kind of consciences my actions had. I played football and I had lots of friends. I had friends who were jocks, theater geeks, nerds, and some friends who were the trouble makers of the school. I went to parties a lot, I would drink and have a good old time that was until I had my accident. My friend Stevie's parents were going out of town and we all knew what that meant, he was going to have a party. We all had our jobs to do to prepare for it. Stevie had the house so he was all set, another friend of mine was in charge of inviting everyone, and my job was to get the alcohol. I had an older brother who would always buy my friends and I booze, so I went all out. I got beer in bottles and in a keg, I got hard alcohol like whiskey, vodka, rum and all the mixers that you need for a good underage drinking party. The party was going great everyone was having a blast! Everyone showed up it was turning out to be the best party of the year. People showed up that we didn't even invite, so they got charged at the door to cover the cost of the party. As the night went on and it was getting late people were starting to leave, we started to wind down and clean up a little (as well as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Fallacy Of Underage Drinking Description of Flyer This flyer was created with young students in mind, but more specifically high school level students. The flyer is arguing against underaged drinking and that if you even just take a sip of alcohol, you then will instantly become addicted and will not attend college, due to your addiction. I decided to use the slippery slope logical fallacy for my flyer. A slippery slope fallacy is where someone may do something or an event will happen and the result of that is a drastic leap, most likely the worst case that could happen, and it has no logical reasoning behind it and leaves out all other elements in between. I decided to use the common issue of underage drinking as the topic of my flyer. People can sometimes exaggerate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Underage Drinking Debate Fort Collins has recently proposed an ordinance that aims at underage drinking. Through this ordinance, party hosts will be liable for minors under the influence even if they did not supply the alcohol. This social ordinance would result in a civil violation and fine for individuals who host a party where underage drinking takes place. I am in belief that this ordinance would do more harm than good in the Fort Collins community. Executive director, Gordon Combes, said this ordinance would force party hosts to be more diligent about preventing underage consumption. The problem with this argument is that the party host cannot often control if the teen consumes alcohol. If this ordinance were passed, party hosts will be inclined to not allow ... Underage Drinking Cause "About 7.7 million Americans between ages 12–20 report current alcohol consumption; this represents nearly 20% of this age group for whom alcohol consumption is illegal. Among 12–20 year olds, reported rates of past month consumption, binge drinking and heavy alcohol all declined between 2006 and 2015" (2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health). Underage drinking is a serious problem in society. Minors think it is "cool" to go to parties and drink with friends. The consequences of doing so do not cross a minor's mind until it is too late. Peer pressure, modeling parents' behavior, and curiosity all lead to underage drinking. Peer pressure is a cause for underage drinking because minors want to fit in with the popular crowd. Something as simple as a friend allowing another friend that has not tried alcohol before to have a taste can turn in to underage drinking. Underage drinking is an eerie thing to think about. It is so real in society and has been for a long time. Though underage drinking is an active problem, the numbers have declined in recent years. • 17. What Is Underage Drinking? Underage drinking is a serious public health problem in the United States. Alcohol is the most widely used substance of abuse among America's youth, and drinking by young people poses enormous health and safety risks. Young kids around the ages of 13–15, use drinking as an act of socializing at parties. Drinking has caused a lot of damage in that area of events. Young teens also experience "Binge drinking" which mostly occurs at parties such as sororities or just parties in general. Binge drinking is the practice of consuming large quantities of alcohol in a single session. Binge drinking is considered to be one of the most dangerous pattern of drinking. Underage Drinking Speech Underage Drinking From the stereotypical teen parties in the classic movies with the red solo cup, and the "make sure you don't leave your cup sitting out like that" to pressuring one another "just take a few sips, it won't hurt you" phrases. It's all fun and games, but what they don't show is the aftermath and how behind it all is the issues that ends all the fun and games of drinking and being drunk. They miss the part showing the effects mentally/physical issues with your body, and all the accidents and the innocent people that end up injured from just that one little sip to a few cups that your so called close friend offered explaining "you'll be fine", to when you realize what things could actually happen to you could effect your whole life. Teens dont understand what actually happens while being under the influence of alcohol. I feel there is always a solution to things like this situation being responsible, paying attention to what goes in your drinks, and not driving while intoxicated. The night before, she had consumed large amounts of hard liquor until she had passed out. While she lay unconscious for hours, others continued to party around her, afraid to obtain her help. All because of a night of binge drinking, Ali's freshman year at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee ended grimly. The loss devastated her inconsolable mother who did not even know her daughter drank. Unfortunately, all it takes is one night of binge drinking of alcohol to become a killer. Alcohol abuse links to many social troubles like sexual assaults and drunk driving accidents that result in the deaths of strangers. • 27. The Dangers Of Underage Drinking Today, alcohol use continues to be regarded by many people, as a normal part of growing up. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism published a large number of national surveys, research, and stories having to deal with this growing issue. One of the largest problems that all researchers, which started studies of underage drinking, needed to know why young kids start drinking in the first place. The answer given by a large number of kids has to do with the environment they are in and the acceptance of their peers. Yet an environment where underage drinking is allowed, or taking place, is dangerous, not only for the teenager drinking but also for everyone around them as well as society as a whole. This is evident by the number of alcohol– involved motor vehicle crashes, homicides, suicides, and other injuries. With many national campaigns (We Don't Serve Teens and STOP Underage Drinking) now trying to decrease or bring an end to this "extracurricular activity" we are now seeing an increasingly large amount of surveys and questioning taking place around the nation. • 40. Underage Drinking Underage drinking is one of the most prevalent problems in the United States. This is a problem because alcohol is an item that nobody under twenty–one years of age is allowed to purchase or consume. People who are underage are punished by law when they consume or attempt to purchase alcohol illegally. This makes people under twenty–one want alcohol even more. In other countries where the legal minimum drinking age is lower, there are less problems because it gives parents the push to teach their children how to drink responsibly. If at eighteen years old, someone can go to war and vote for the future of our country, why not lower the legal drinking age of twenty–one to eighteen years old? Lowering the drinking age would not only lower the rate of alcoholism, it would also help make drinking safer for the youth, keep the youth out of trouble with the law, and keep the youth from sneaking around trying to grasp their hands on a bottle of alcohol. Lowering the legal drinking age would push parents to educate their children in drinking responsibly earlier. Parents teaching their children how to drink in moderation would lead to safer college campuses. Knowing how to drink in moderation is important because if you don't, it can lead to dangerous circumstances. The Problem Of Underage Drinking Paying the Fiddler in Lives In order to fully understand the threat that underage drinking poses to our country, it is important to realize just how commonplace this sort of inebriation has become. As a result of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a way of monitoring habits among teens, the Center for Disease Control (or CDC) found that nearly thirty–five percent of students had consumed alcohol within one month of taking the questionnaire (Adolescent 1). Statistics revealing widespread intoxication among minors are inherently concerning, since each new drinker is another potential victim of alcohol poisoning, dependence, or one of the many other dangers that drinkers face. • 68. Underage Drinking in Australia Underage drinking is rapidly becoming a widespread matter within Australia. It is considered to be a serious problem not only nationally, but also globally wide. Underage drinking has climbed its way up the ladder to one of the most common forms of substance use. "The health risks that accumulate over a lifetime from alcohol increase progressively – this means that the more young people drink, the greater the risk" (Windle, Spear, Fuligni, Angold, Drown, Pine, Smith, Giedd, Dahl 2009). Some states within Australia do not have to deal with this problem nearly as much as others. These teenagers are classified as underage drinkers because the national legal drinking age in Australia is 18 years of age – meaning they are still considered to be minors (Australian Alcohol Guidelines, 2009). For the purposes of this essay, the focus will be set on adolescences and alcohol. It will be argued whether parental influence has an impact on teenagers present or future drinking habits. Some research studies show relation from parental influence and upbringing of a child to underage drinking (Ary, Tildesley, Hops, Andrews 1993). In this study conducted by Ary et al., 173 families with two children were questioned. The object of the examination was to explore the attitudes and beliefs parents were teaching their children about the consumption of alcoholic substances. Within the study a mother, father, sibling and the target teenager undertook a self–assessment to measure their alcohol ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Underage Drinking Underage Drinking Introduction Underage drinking has long been, and continues to be, a serious public health concern. "Teen alcohol use kills more than 4700 people each year and high school students who use alcohol or other drugs are five times more likely to drop out of school" (MADD, 2014) than kids who do not. There have been years of underage drinking prevention programs to curtail the use of alcohol by those under 21 years of age and yet alcohol is the most widely used drug by adolescents in the United States (Wagoner et al. 2012). Underage drinking is a real problem in all 50 states, even though there are laws in place to prohibit anyone under 21 years of age from drinking alcohol. Parental involvement might be the ... This means if an adult is supplying minors with alcohol in their home, they can be arrested and charged. These laws are an attempt to decrease the number of adults hosting underage parties and supplying alcohol to minors (Wagoner et al. 2012). In addition to social host laws, laws concerning restricted licenses for teens and limiting teen driving at night seem to have had an impact on underage drinking. Additionally, license suspension laws for alcohol violations are making kids think twice before they consume alcohol and drive (Hingson, 2014). Yet underage drinking remains a nationwide concern and must continue to be addressed. Methodology This study will use cluster sampling to get a good base of individuals and not just those from one area of a city or country. We will use five regions, Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Northwest and Southwest. We will contract with 30 parents in each region (150 total) who have children ages nine to nineteen, and are willing to actively participate in a longitudinal study. The purpose of the study will be explained to everyone in a question and answer meeting. Those who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Underage Drinking Underage drinking is becoming more of a noticeable problem in society, not only with high school students, but also with younger generations. Drinking is all over the television, the radio, and talked about in schools, public places, etc. Alcohol advertisements are more and more appealing to younger generations. If our youth is educated at a younger age, if school policies were stricter, and if clubs and bars cracked down on underage drinking the problem would not be as serious. Youth should be well educated about consumption of alcohol well before middle school. By the time students reach middle school they are already exposed to alcohol. D.A.R.E, the program that teaches children about alcohol and its effects, should be taught in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 15. This just shows that bartenders are not carding. Their reasons may differ, but it seems as though females are easily passed off as legal drinking age regardless of what their I.D. says. From my three years of personal experience in the club industry I realized many young females received drinks from the bartenders despite their age. Walking into clubs females usually don't even get carded as long as they are good looking they get the wristband. Clubs and bars should have females at the front greeting because that would eliminate underage drinking. Also, I.D scanners would help because there would no way of getting in with a fake I.D. If clubs and bars were stricter and had better tools to prevent underage drinking this problem would decrease rapidly. In conclusion, underage drinking affects should be taught at a younger age before the kids are exposed. Not only should they be educated earlier but the schools policies should be stricter as well as college policies. If schools became stricter along with clubs and bars the future of our youth would improve. These steps must be taken or our younger generations will start to spiral without ... • 74. Underage Drinking On Fridays Young people have continued to consume alcohol especially on weekends. Consequently, young people have continued to experience the aftermath of drinking too much alcohol at the tender age. As a result, most of the countries categorize underage drinking as the leafing problem in public health. Teenagers always find a way to avoid being noticed by their parents. Even though it is their choice, most initially know what they are doing is wrong, but do it anyways. The social choice theory is vital when examining why young people make the decision to drink beer on Fridays when their parents are away. Choice theory is the belief that we are internally, not externally motivated (Coulson, 2013 p.119–122) The choice theory explains how each individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Underage Drinking Essays "Automobiles are not ferocious.... it is man who is to be feared," as Robbins B. Stoeckel remarked, enumerates a simple, yet fundamental concept– a vehicle in itself is a relatively safe, that is, until you put a person behind the controls. Further adding to the danger is the ever prevalent risk of a fellow driver being impaired by the usage of alcohol; perhaps the only thing that may make such a situation even more difficult and dangerous is one who is under the legal alcohol drinking age. Fewer situations are more life threatening than when an underage driver has been illegally consuming alcohol, yet persists in the belief that he or she retains the ability to drive safely. Thoughts along this line are foolish at best and deadly at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Simply remarking that such a decision is dangerous fails to suffice as concrete evidence of the negative effects of underage alcohol consumption, and so statistical evidence must be given. Approximately five thousand underage drinkers die each year; the most prevalent cause is, not surprisingly, motor vehicle accidents. What many do not understand is what other factors constitute the other approximately three thousand; sixteen hundred to homicides, that is, murders and other deliberate killings, as well as 300 to suicide, usually caused by an exacerbation of underlying depression or other psychological difficulties. The remaining thousand are usually caused by such grisly circumstances as falling, burning, and drowning. While this may seem a relatively small number in the vast amounts of the twelve to twenty year old age group, estimates are that within the past month one–quarter of underage persons used alcohol, while two–thirds of those were binge drinkers. Not only does underage drinking increase the chance of dying in related incidents it encourages other destructive behaviors: engage in sexual activities, carry a plethora of illegal substances, and correlations have even been found that links underage drinking to poor performance in school. Other observations have been made that negatively link underage drinking with mental ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Underage Drinking In America Underage drinking is a very eminent problem for Americans today. Some may not know that the human brain continues to develop until the age of twenty–five. Underage drinking can weaken neurological development, which could cause minors to make bad decisions, have memory loss, slower thought processes, and even acquire irreversible brain damage. Drinking when your body and mind are not fully developed can leave damaging effects on a person's social abilities, neurological abilities, and overall health. A youth's social abilities can be destroyed by underage drinking. Socialization skills are key when a minor is growing up. A minor struggles to find their own independence and find themselves, therefore creating a distance from family relationships and creating new bonds with peers. The youth tend to try to be similar to each other to fit in with the rest, and as a result, children may be pressured into drinking alcohol. When these minors start to drink heavily and frequently, they may develop self esteem issues, depression, disorders, antisocial behavior, and anxiety. This makes underage drinkers more withdrawn from their peers and families than their peers who choose not to drink. Peers who don't drink do not tend to associate and be friends with the group of people that do drink. This can lead to isolation and also disdain from those who do ... Adolescents drink less frequently than adults, but in opposition, youths also consume larger amounts at a time. There are several different consequences resulting from drinking alcohol while underage, and social, neurological, and health repercussions are just three out of numerous effects.
