1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
2. My Music Magazine As my music magazine concept, of exploring the talents of up and coming musicians, is very original and has rarely been done before, it is not already being distributed by many media institutions. Because of this I would have to find a media institution that could easily incorporate my magazine into their portfolio.
3. Media Institutions To find out which media institution would suit my music magazine best and would be able to distribute it among my target audience effectively I will have to research existing institutions. These institutions would have to be well known and already have some knowledge about the music industry so they would know how to get my magazine out to the public in the best way they could.
4. IPC One distributor that I have researched into is International Publishing Corporation. IPC’s magazines are bought by nearly two thirds of UK women and 44% of UK men which adds up to almost 27 million adults, selling over 350 million copies each year in the UK. IPC already distributes many magazines such as Country Life, Horse and Hound, Nuts, NME, Look, Nowand TVTimes. IPC has a very wide target audience for its magazines such as mass market women, up market women and men.
5. IPC for New Noise I think IPC would be a good publisher for my music magazine, New Noise, as it is a well know established business that has a huge amount of popular brands already so therefore the brand wouldn’t have to establish itself among the other competitive companies. Being associated with the IPC publishers would make New Noise automatically recognisable to consumers.
6. Continued... Also IPC is also associated with well-known music magazine NME so the company would know how to handle a popular music magazine. As IPC only has one music magazine in its range at the moment it could work well for an up and coming music magazine as then it would not have to compete with others in the same genre from the same publishers, it would also add an extra link to IPC’s chain of well known and widely bought magazines.
7. IPC widening its brand IPC hosts a whole range of magazines from different genres such as lifestyle, fashion, music etc. As IPC want to continue its wide range of magazines that it publishes it would welcome any genre of music magazines to its company. Also IPC may want a wider variety of music magazine to add to and complete its collection.
8. Downfall of IPC’s NME In 2007 NME’s circulation fell by 24.3% to 48.459 meaning that IPC would need a big new magazine to help the music genre selling figures rise again. This would also boost the overall circulation for the company as a whole. I believe New Noise could do this for IPC.
9. Bauer Publishing company Bauer would be an appropriate publisher for the new music magazine as it also publishes music magazines such as Kerrang, Q and MOJO, therefore it also has knowledge of the music business and what makes a music magazine sell. Bauer sells much more music magazines than IPC as it has three magazines whereas IPC only has one.
10. Continued... Bauer publisher is a very popular publishing company as it owns TV Choice which has a circulation of 1,309,469 per week. This would be a great advantage to the New Noise as it may be able to sell it at that rate. Also for every one NME that IPC sells, Bauer sells 27 TV choice magazines therefore Bauer could use the same selling techniques to attract the audience to buy the new music magazine. Overall Bauer publishers would be a better alternative for New Noise than IPC.
