 I will be teaching Native American History to my 3rd grade class. This class consists
of 11 girls and 9 boys, 21 children total. This class is 65% white, 20% African-
American, and 15% Hispanic. 5 students have mild ADHD.
 By the end of a five day school week, my 3rd grade students will know Native
American History. They will learn this important information by working in groups to
create and present Native American projects. These projects will outline the
importance of the difference in Native American culture by introducing the children
to differnt foods, languages, song/dance, games, and ways of life. This will be
completed with a 95% accuracy.
 Day 1- Introduce Native Americans to the children and give each child a Native American name. Question
their prior knowledge on topic, begin with what they know and then broaden their knowledge with more
detail. Begin by discussing the different Tribes that are located throughout North America and the
different languages they speak. Present the children with pictures via the smart board for each tribe
during this discussion. Finally, split the children into 7 groups of 3. Hand each group a piece of paper
with the title of the Native American Tribe they will be responsible for. Then list the requirements for
each group. (Students are required to do research on a certain tribe located in North America. For this
tribe they must list the name, location, language spoke, hunter/gatherer, types of food, ways of
life/living, and tools/pottery use. They can present this information as they choose, but must include
examples with pictures or items they have created to resemble.
 Day 2- Student research will begin. We will compare a hunter to a gatherer. Together we will create a
similarity/difference chart using the smart board. The children will be allowed to fill in the chart. We
will become familar with how tribes created their own materials, such as tools to work and hunt with. I
will then give the children time to get in groups and create a tool used within the tribe they were
assigned.
 Day 3- Studet research will continue. I will present the children with diffents forms of Native American
food. They will be allowed to taste and determine their likes and dislikes. We will compare Native
American food with the food we are familar with verbally. We will also cover Native American pottery
and how they created their own materials to eat with. The children will then get into their groups and
create pottery used within the tribe they were assigned.
 Day 4- Research will continue. As a class we will experiance Music as it was known to Native Americans. I
will play several different kinds of music and allow the children to dance as the Native Americans would.
I will then indroduce them to different types of Native American games. They will be allowed to
experiance the differnt games through play.
 Day 5- The children will be required to present their project and I will use this to evaluate what they
have learned.
 Technology will be used in the following forms:
 Internet for research
 Powerpoint for Presentation
 Smartboard for Presentation
