Eastern New Mexico
Last week, the Eastern New Mexico University softball
team took its offense to a new level. Erikka Burke and
Kyra Sirag both had grand slams to set a new single-
season record, with four. The previous record of three
was accomplished four times (2013, 2012, 2007,
2006). Sirag’s grand slam came in Sunday’s contest
against Texas A&M-Kingsville, which saw Eastern
drop a 19-17 decision. The 36 runs marked the
highest scoring game in team history. Burke’s grand
slam was part of a 13-run effort at Lubbock Christian.
Prior to that contest, the Greyhounds hadn’t scored
more than six runs in a game against the Lady Chaps.
Sirag, one of the four seniors on the roster, also
batted her way into team history over the weekend.
With a third-inning double during the opener, she
became the fourth player in team history to reach
200 career hits. With nine hits against the Javelinas
she has 207 for her career and is one shy of catching
Kimberly Paschall for fourth on the ENMU career list.
On Tuesday, the Hounds dropped a doubleheader at
Lubbock Christian by scores of 10-0 and 18-13. Audrey
Velasquez batted .625 over the two games. During
Friday’s doubleheader against Texas A&M-Kingsville,
Sirag batted .714 with a double, while Morgan Green
and Velasquez both hit ,429. The Javelinas won the
games 8-5 and 4-1. Natasha Kissell held Texas A&M-
Kingsville scoreless for five innings into the nightcap,
before they broke through for four runs. The Javelinas
took Saturday’s doubleheader by scores of 11-2 and
19-17. Simone Laurenz batted five-for-five on the day.
