Function Of The Respiratory System – supplies the body with oxygen and disposes of carbon
dioxide
RESPIRATION – a collective term for the following processes:
1) Pulmonary ventilation
a) Movement of air into the lungs (inspiration)
b) Movement of air out of the lungs (expiration)
2) External respiration
a) Movement of oxygen from the lungs to the blood
b) Movement of carbon dioxide from the blood to the lungs
3) Transport of respiratory gases
a) Transport of oxygen from the lungs to the tissues
b) Transport of carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs
4) Internal respiration
a) Movement of oxygen from blood to the tissue cells
b) Movement of carbon dioxide from tissue cells to blood
2. Principal Organs Of The Respiratory System
1. NOSE
Provides and airway for respiration
Moistens and warms entering air
Filters and cleans inspired air
Resonating chamber for speech
Detects odors in the airstreams
2. PHARYNX (THROAT)
Where food and air mix at the back of the throat
3. LARYNX (VOICE BOX)
Keeps food and drink out of the airway
Sound production
Acts as a sphincter during abdominal straining (ex. heavy lifting)
4. TRACHEA (WINDPIPE)
Air passageway
Cleans, warms, and moistens incoming air
5. BRONCHI
Solely an air passageway
6. LUNGS - contain the
a. BRONCHIOLES
b. ALVEOLI (where gas exchange happens)
PROCESS OF BREATHING
1. BREATH IN
-- your body gets oxygen from the air. Rib muscles contract to pull ribs up and out.
The DIAPHRAGM muscle contracts to pull down the lungs. Tissue expands to
suck in air.
2. BREATH OUT
-- you get rid of other gases that your body does not need. Rib muscles relax. The
Diaphragm muscle relaxes. Tissue returns to resting position and forces air out.
