Music Magazine Market Research
The purpose of this market research is to gain information from a primary source on the largest
target audience and what they would prefer both in the magazine and on the cover. To do this I have
created a questionnaire allowing me to collect qualitative and quantitative data from the
participants. The participants consisted of 40% males and 60% females and answered a range of
questions mainly associated with music. The age range of the participants did not vary due to the
magazine being aimed at young adults 16-23. This is due to this age group being the most likely to
keep up to date with music, which is supported by the information gained from the questionnaire.
Gender
The significance of the number of each gender
Male Female questioned it that the data may lean towards the
taste of one more than the other. In this case I have
received data from more females. This will have to
40% be taken into account when creating a magazine
60% aimed at both genders.
Which music genres do For instance one of the questions asked was which
you listen to? Music genres do you listen to? They had the option
of ticking a number of boxes because most would
Other not be able to narrow down their interests. The
Rap Graph shows a range of genres however the more
popular options are Pop, Indie, Rock and alternative.
Dubstep Therefore I will be using one of these genres in the
magazine.

How do you prefer listen This Data allows me to see that my target audience
to music? prefers to listen to their music by downloading it to
12 their phone, iPod or laptop. Therefore I will be more
10 likely to review individual tracks in the magazine as
8
6 opposed to album reviews. However CD still appears
4
2 to be popular therefore this will not be an issue. Also
0
the use of YouTube highlight the popularity of the
internet therefore having the magazine online also
may increase its popularity.

Interests
On my questionnaire I ask about the interests of the
participant as a way of defining my target audience to
7% Gaming a greater extent. Film and T.V were the more popular
11% 21% Film options therefore I may mention the cross-media
0%
T.V convergence of music used in particular films and
programs. Also I could link music to games as this is
25% Celebity
also a popular option.

Do you Purchase Music
Magazines
8 The significance of knowing how many people
6 purchase magazines allows me to see that more
4 people do not purchase magazines. This encourages
2 me to create a new different type of magazine that

will interest both those who do and those who do not

purchase music magazines.
Content
Interviews Reviews The question which content would you like to see in a
News Competitions music magazine is important because you need to
Posters know what will interest the reader, because if they are
0% not interested your magazine will not be bought. The
16%
quantitative information given does not answer the
40%
question how much of each content will be included
20%
however it does tell me interviews are a big interest.

How much do you spend on a
Magazine?
The pricing of a magazine is very important because
None my target audience is mainly young adults, or
£11+
£6-10
students. Therefore I is important to determine how
£3-5 much they would want to spend on a magazine.
£1-2 Therefore I will most likely be aiming or a £3-5
Under £1 magazine.

Would you Prefer a Dark or
Bright? Exactly 50% of the participants voted for a dark
6
colour scheme and a light colour scheme. Therefore
to determine which I think will work best for the
4
target audience I will create more than one design.

Magazine cover On the questionnaire I added four magazines covers
to determine which type of cover they would prefer.

image. Q and Karang were more busy and abstract.

Therefore I will be more likely to create a traditional

From this data I am able to determine the major aspects of my magazine that will suit my target
audience. For instance from the feedback I can summarise that the magazine will be priced at £3-5
to be affordable for students, aimed at both male and female readers. Also it has determined which
content people would like to see that will make them more likely to spend money. I know that the
magazine cover will be in the traditional minimalistic style which means the image will be the main
focus. Therefore this image will have to be high quality. I am going to find an interesting but niche
magazine that will allow me to include Pop, Rock and Indie because these were the more popular
genres selected.
