Unit plan day 6
1. A- Analyze Learners
o Students are in the fifth grade. There are 24 students total, 11 of the students are
female and 13 of the students are male. Among the 24 students, one female
student has recently transferred from Japan and one of the male students has
transferred from Colombia. Both students are fluent in their native language as
well as English. Both transfer students also have thick accents.
S- State Objective
o Like lessons before, we will begin by location Africa on the world map. Students
will then view a Glogster about Africa that includes fast facts, cuisine in Africa,
and animals that can be found in Africa. Students will then listen to the song
“Baba Yetu” by so the students can hear what Swahili (a language spoken in
Africa) sounds like. After listening to the song, students will use Google translate
to translate their own sentence into Swahili and tweet it to the class page. Student
will then play online interactive games, one of which teaches the countries within
Africa and the other teaches the animals that can be found in Africa. Upon
completion of activities, students will return to the classroom Facebook page and
post their questions and interesting facts. Students will be able to name countries
and animals in Africa with 85% accuracy by the end of the day.
S- Select Materials
o The same world map photo that has been used will continue to be used today.
Students will view the Glogster that has been created by me with different facts
about Africa. Students will listen to a song sung in Swahili via YouTube, but will
not be watching the video due to some religious issues that may occur. Students
2. will then utilize the computer lab to translate their own sentences, tweet their
sentences, and complete the educational interactive games. Upon completion of
activities, students will post onto the classroom Facebook page as they have done
before.
U- Utilize Media and Materials
o To ensure effectiveness toward the lesson and appropriateness, all media and
materials have been previously viewed and approved by me. The Facebook will
continue to be monitored to be sure that all rules, regulations, and guidelines are
being executed and that all classroom material is being discussed.
R- Require Learner Participation
o Before translating their sentence, the sentence must first be approved by me.
Students will read their tweet aloud after tweeting and share the translation as
well. While in the computer lab, I will be walking around to be sure that students
are remaining on task and completing their assignments. I will also be walking
around to be asking questions about the lessons to stimulate class discussion
throughout the lesson. I will always be readily available if any complications or
questions occur.
E- Evaluate and Revise
o Before beginning the lesson, I will activate prior knowledge by asking the
students what they already know about Africa. We will also discuss what they
would like to learn. Throughout the lesson, if someone finds the answer to their
question, I would like them to share with the class. After the lesson, we will talk
about anything new that students have learned about Africa.
