1. A. The students are all fourth graders that come from varying ethnicities and cultures. There are
more girls than boys, and also a number of African American, Jewish, and Muslim children.
S. The class will learn different holiday traditions from different cultures in order to gain further
understanding. The class will learn these traditions by watching excerpts of videos, looking at
visual aids, reading stories together in a classroom setting, completing a web quest that goes in
depth in studying the holidays, and participating in a traditional celebration for the holiday of
their choosing on Second Life. The students will gain appreciation of other traditions at a rate of
100% by the end of the holiday season.
S. The students will need copies of the readings that are read in class as well as a DVD and a
television in order to show the clips. All of the materials for the reenactments will be made by
the students using classroom materials such as construction paper. The students will need to get
permission from their parents in order to play the Second Life game in order to better experience
the holiday. They will also need computer access in order to do the web quest.
U. The teacher will preview the clips to decide which ones most accurately portray the traditions.
He will also read the books to become familiar with the material.
The teacher will copy the books for each child, obtain a copy of the videos, and purchase
materials for the children to construct the props with.
The teacher will need to obtain the proper equipment to show the video and assign groups for the
children.
The lesson will open up with the teacher talking about the different holidays and explaining them
to the children so that they better understand the reading and videos.
2. The groups will be assigned by the teacher to further enrichment.
The teacher will either find a web quest that meets the requirements or make one if necessary.
The teacher will need to set the computers up to run Second Life, and monitor the students to
make sure that they stay on task.
R. All students must read a portion of the books that are read in class, and the students will be
asked questions about the videos in a group setting at the conclusion of each clip. Each student
must take part in a reenactment activity. The Second Life reenactment must be done if the
student’s parents permit it and the web quest must be completed.
E. The students will be quizzed on each holiday with quizzes that the students design. The
reenactments will also be graded for accuracy. The web quest will be graded, which will show
what the student actually learned about the holiday that they choose.
