Here I am going to tell you about every light
we have at Priestley college and their
accessories.
I am also going to include a scenario why I
would use this light over another.

Encased bulb - no lens

This light is normally used in music gigs. Mainly
for aesthetics but also used in music gigs and
concerts programmed with a chase.
These lights can be used to add depth to a general
cover of light. But it’s fixed… you cant manipulate
the light.
I would use a selecon over a parcan for general
cover because the light can be manipulated and is
more defined than a parcan creating a better cover
of light.
But I would choose a parcan over a birdie because
they are bigger, creating more light and cover for
the actor to work in.

Primary colour LEDs
Can be daisy chained

LED parcans are the only lights that can be
controlled from the desk… You can change
the colour of the light just by pressing one
button instead of going up the rig and
changing the gels on the light.
You can also daisy chain these lights, this
means they can be connected to each other
and effectively talk to each other… what
colour and when to use that colour at the
same time as the rest.
LED pars have the primary colours in
them but can be mixed together to create
different colour light creating a specific
colour.

I would use a pebble convex for general cover of a
stage because it has the ability to have a wide beam
angle and has a bright light to add depth to the
stage lighting. This light could be used as a last
resort spotlight… you would only do this if you
had ran out of spotlights during a production.
This light has a pebble convex lens adding depth
and sharpness to the light, this can help because it
creates a more defined beam… better than a
selecon because they have a rigid glass creating less
sharpness in the lens. Plus I would use these lights
over a parcan for general cover because of their
depth of light.

This light gives off a diffused spread of
light. A CCT can be used in general cover
because the lights aren’t as defined
therefore the light blends into each other.
The beam size can also be adjusted on
these lights by using barn doors
effectively manipulating the light.

These lights are mainly used as side lights
in a dance show for example. This is
because the light is bright enough to light
up the performer and also diffused so the
three lights (Head, body, feet) can blend
into one another.
I wouldn’t use a pin spot as a side light
because they are not powerful enough for
this job because they don’t create a bright
enough light.

These lights can be used for a general
cover, these lights are mainly used for
general cover because they are bigger than
the PCs and CCTs therefore having a
bigger beam angle, this is better because
less lights but still covering the stage. The
light can also be manipulated meaning
these lights can be used for almost
anything.
These lights although can be used for
anything they are mainly used for general
cover because of their ability to diffuse the
light and have the light manipulated.
I wouldn’t use these lights as back lights
because too many would be needed to
back light the stage.

Back light

Two front lights

These lights are mainly used for back light.
This is to light up the back of the stage
making the actor stand out more instead of
blending into the background. These will
me dimmer than the front lights, they
normally use a colour to “cut out” the
performer making them stand out more
less back lights are needed than front
lights.
These lights have a 1000watt bulb bigger
than other lights therefore why I would
use them over a parcan because they are
brighter.
A common misconception is because they
are bigger doesn’t mean a bigger throw of
light just a brighter light.

Gels
Gel cases
500,550 watt bulbs

Used mainly to light up the audience.
These lights can only be used as on… or
off you cant control the beam.
Banks of these can be used in gigs so may
have gels in too.
These lights can be used with parcans to
add depth to a general wash but I
wouldn’t use these specifically for a
general wash of light.
The main purpose of these lights is to
light up a Cyclorama this is because of
the spread of light they give off and the
gels that can be used.

These are mainly used in museums and
used in exhibitions because they are such
small lights they don’t give off much light
so they are used for little things.
They can be used on a truss having many
all together lighting up the audience in
music gigs or concerts.
Mainly aesthetics or audience lights.
Successful because of price, size, aesthetics
and lightweight.

No barn doors
Different colour bulbs

These lights are used to light up a disco
ball because you can direct the light onto
the glitter ball and have no over spill this is
because of its small beam angle. They can
also be used in museums and exhibitions.
Instead of gels these lights have coloured
bulbs so it is quicker to change the bulb
rather than the gels.
I would use this light over a parcan for this
job because a parcan just throws out light
and not specific enough for the disco ball
to be lit. The parcan will light everything
else up as well as the ball.

Ability to have gobos
Iris’

These lights are used to spot people or
specific objects. They both can be used to
create a shape in the light too just by using
their shutters. Both lights can be used to
create a harder or a softer edge circular
light.
Source four is the newer of the two with a
brighter yet energy saving light bulb
therefore having a whiter light rather than
a yellow light that the Minuette has.
Gobos can also be used… these are effects
that can be placed in the light to
manipulate the light into that pattern.
I would use these lights over a CCT
because the light can be manipulated
better and easier.
