3. Sound in any kind of theatre is highly important.
Different type of theatres use sound differently and in
different ways but all for the same reason… complete the
picture.
I have chosen to analyse sound in these two styles of theatre
and how they use sound differently… or even in the same
way.
Musical theatre.
Contemporary theatre.
4. Mary Poppins.
Mary Poppins is a play set in London during the world war. It
is about a family in need of a nanny who can handle the kids
as many have failed before. Many had failed until Mary
Poppins came along and changed the children to responsible
and well behaved children.
Joseph and the Technicolor dream coat.
Joseph and the Technicolor Dream coat is a story based on
the "coat of many colours“ that was given to joseph from his
father. This coat was to give joseph many fortunes but bumpy
roads were ahead. The story is based on the Bible's Book of
Genesis.
5. Always has some sort of live music.
Contains sound effects.
Always spoon feeds the audience.
Sound has a direct correlation to what’s happening on
stage.
Diegetic and non-diegetic.

6. More experimental approach, no rules or regulations.
Sound can work in correlation with the dance or
performance… or be completely disassociated, this provides
confusion and tension in the audience.
Sound provides form, structural devices i.e. climax, time
frame, rhythm etc.
The sound in dance usually suggests place, mood, time etc.
7. Three different kinds of contemporary…
Ghost dance.
Revelations.

8. Both genres create a picture…. Builds the atmosphere
through the design of sound.
Both CAN but may not be narrative… but they can be
narrative with diegetic and non-diegetic sounds used in both.
Both follow general rules of sound design but musical theatre
being more strict towards them.
9. Contemporary dance conveys emotion through
movement not sound.
Musical theatre always has a story line

Without sound I would struggle to enjoy any kind of stage play, especially musical.I chose contemporary because it is something different. I really like how in contemporary… they don’t follow the rules… they go against it all, disassociating the sound with the dance especially.

Here are the general points any sound designer would follow creating sound for a musical play.There would usually be a band or an orchestra in the pit (under or next to the stage)Sound effects are needed throughout the play… maybe wind blowing or the waves crashing against the rocks.The audience is always spoon fed… if something is happening sound designers make sure the audience know it is happening.This is direct correlation. If someone is running through a field or corn… you can hear the sound effect of that happening… if there is a dance an the dancers build up or step up the tempo if the dance the music follows… everything is working in harmony with each other. And finally A mix of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds are used… non-diegetic normally used to create suspense or tension.Here is a video of a performance of “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” down on Broadway. (play the video and explain about direct correlation and the live music… explain the points and then play the video)And then joseph… play the video and wait until it builds… explain how the music builds up and the dance does at the same time, this is because there is a direct correlation between them both. Contemporary can be very similar to musical theatre… but at the same time it could be the complete opposite. Contemporary dance follow a more experimental approach usually… not following the rules or regulations musical theatre follow.Sound like musical theatre can be in direct correlation the dance or performance. Or… completely disassociated… The sound and performance can be completely opposite… this would create confusion for the audience… they start asking questions… tension starts to build in the audience… but this is exactly what a sound designer is looking for, suspense and tension created in the audience. All the sound is always completing everything. It created the pace, rhythm, climax… the sound usually suggests place and time… sometimes the mood , but as mentioned before… there can be a complete disassociation meaning the dance could possibly be all upbeat and happy but the sound and music be all eary and scary causing tension.

This film combines different shooting locations, black and white and color film, and Dolby stereo sound to present dance through the visual medium of film.Here is a clip I found and I personally like this video because of the way the sound paints a picture… creating an atmosphere but the dance is differently paced.Explain the juxtaposition and how this will help… how tension is built and confusion too… why is this good? Disassociation happens in this video, when all the music dies down the dancers are still moving at the same pace as they were with the music.Play the video and show the disassociation. Explain what's happening and when its happening.
