In this paper I will summarise Sports, Males and Masculinities written by Richard Pringle and
Queer(y)ing Masculinities in Schools: Faggots, Fairies and the first XV written by Shane Town. It is

masculinity and its relationship or influence with sport, but it appears that in recent times it has been
widely researched with various different theories and concepts developing from this research.
The article looks to shed light on the concept of male participation in sports, particularly heavy
contact sports, and its relationship or influential nature in developing a male identity or a
masculinity dependant on sport.
One of the key concepts detailed by Pringle (2007), is the idea of hegemonic masculinity, which was
originally coined by Connell (1995). Connell suggest that the concepts of hegemony and
masculinity have been intertwined, which has created a social form of a masculine ideal, developed
around male dominance, power and patriarchy over groups who are deemed "weaker" such as
women and homosexual men. Hegemonic masculinity is essentially a socially elite or desirable
status, with which the "performance of 'masculinity'" can be legitimately practised within society.

One of the first textbooks in the field by physician Daniel Fuller 1913 (as cited in Frank, 1992)
describe the ideal occupational therapist as a woman having the personality of teacher and nurse as
the stereotypical personality types have a positive effect on the patients. In the literature, it is
frequently notes that women personality types at the time were seen to be therapeutic, morally
superior and the work associated with the crafts were domestic work of women (Frank, 1992;
Friedland, 2003; Pringle, 1992). Women were seen to bring a level of moral superiority in
comparison to males, in hoping they would bring that to their work of culture and teachers in the
profession (Friedland, 2003), since they came from middle to high social classes this continued the
cycle of upper class women joining the profession. These female stereotypes became associated
with the profession's identity in the health care field as feminine. This was beneficial for an era
where women did not have many career choices.
During this era, occupations were gender specific and men were not expected to engage in
professions that were considered feminine, since they did not possess those qualities (Bomia, 1999).
The positions of power were held by men and is reflected in how ward aids were seen to be
submissive to physicians (Rider & Brashear, 1988; Frank, 1992). Even the female founders of
occupational therapy only few had a formal leadership role in the beginning, most were instead

Diamond's fiscal year closing, July 31, 2011. Diamond classified this particular payment to walnut
farmers as "a momentum payment" of 30 to 40 cents per pound for the coming 2011 crop. However,
the walnut farmers contend that the payment was really a way to compensate them for their 2010
crop payment deficiency. The walnut farmer's contention is very interesting. Essentially you can
