2. 1.In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge the forms and
conventions of a real media product?
• Firstly for my magazine, i
looked closely at billboard
as i liked the style and the
appeal it had, as it wasn't
too feminine or masculine
so it would work well as i
wanted my magazine to
appeal to both sexes. My
magazine also follows
media conventions but
also has other ways that
appeals my audience
3. • I have also got with the convention of having a large masthead
which appears a lot through out the magazine. In most
magazines this is a bright colour which stands out, but i
preferred changing the colour to fit with the backgrounds so for
example black and whites against each other make it stand out
well but with out having to use a bright random colour that
doesn't fit well with the style i have gone for. I like using the
greys, blacks and whites as i feel theses colours art gendered
and make the magazine have a modern uni-sex feel to it.
4. • I have stuck with using easy to read fonts as when the fonts are to
fancy people don't want to struggle reading, so keeping my fonts
modern and simple makes it easy for them to read. Also having
these easy to read fonts will make people able to read them while
on the shelfs so if they read something interesting or are able to
read it it will make them ore likely to pick it up and buy it.
5. • The colour scheme i went with was white, black and
different shads of grey. i think these are very modern
colour which make my magazine look sophisticated
and not childish. Also i feel they give it the uni-sex
look i want as i don't want men to feel its too ‘girly’ or
women feeling its too ‘manly’. But as these colours
could be quite dull on their own with the photos used,
i picked a bright colour from these, e.g. the lipstick of
the girl on my front cover, and with that i made some
text and boxes that colour to brighten it up and to
follow more conventions of magazines as this is what
is often done.
6. 2.How does your product represent
particular social groups?
• Most magazines show women in a sexualised way,
and use their sex appeal to interest readers. They
also use them as role models for other girls too look
up to and aspire to be like. With men they are often
shown in a masculine way, their bodies are shown
off and are encouraged to be physically fit. They are
often shown around women with them on the mans
arms too.
7. • In my photos i have followed the typical conventions,
My main image is of a girl, she is made too look
appealing and to attract the male gaze. The photo is
taken from a low angle this makes her seem important,
and shows her as a role model for people to look up to.
By my photos being taken like this is makes my
magazine follow the typical conventions of how
magazines are made.
8. • My images are modern with how they are shot and the
clothes worn, it shows how teenagers are bothered
about how they look and that this is important to them.
This also fits with the style of my magazine as i want it
to be modern but relate able to young adults.
9. • My photos are all of young adults ad teenagers, this
helps again to reenforce my target audience and
interest them as they will be able to relate to the
people in the images. The photos are all happy and
uplifting giving my magazines a fun and sophisticated
feel to it. Although my magazine is for both male and
female, for this issue it seems more feminine as my
interview is with a female artist, but there would
obviously be different issues with males artists as the
ones being interviewed which would then make it
seem more masculine, so it will balance it out over the
months.
10. • I used a pull quote in my double page spread as
this is another conventions of magazines, as when
the reader flicks to this page the quote will stand
out and attract the reader, so if it is interesting it will
make them a lot more likely to read the article. Also
having the pull quote makes the magazine look up
to date and modern making people more likely to
be interested in reading it. I have also used a none
fancy font and made it easy to read, also in the
interview on my DPS i have used slang and made it
so it is like a normal conversation so it can be
relatable to my target audience.
11. 3.What kind of media institutions might
distribute your media product and why?
• A media institution, also know as media group or
conglomerate, is a company which owns a number
of companies in different types of mass media for
example radio, motion picture, television and the
internet.
12. • When looking in the existing products i found that
Billboard is owned by Prometheus Global Media
which is a diversified company with leading assets
in the media and entertainment arenas, including:
Music, entertainment, advertising and marketing.
billboard is the worlds most influential music media
brand. They are built on using the exclusive chart
data.
13. • I would want my magazine to be published by BBC
as they are very well known, they will also have a
wide range of contacts and will be well distributed.
The BBC have a wide range of well know programs
and therefore it would attract a varied audience,
including my target audience.
14. • i would also like to have an online copy of my
magazine so it would be accessible for people who
don't always want a paper copy. Also i think an app
on the apple store and the android store would be
useful as it would give people a chance to feel more
involved and there could be more added to make
the experience more enjoyable.
15. 4.Who would be the audience
for you media product?
• For my magazine i chose my audience as male and
females from 15 - 20. i feel that this is a good
audience to use as magazines tend to be either for
males or females, so having one for both will be
different and make people interested in buying it.
Also when doing my survey most of the participants
when young adults, so it was more convenient to go
with this age range as all the information given to
me about what is wanted in the magazine is from
them.
16. • The colour scheme also shows the audience my
magazine is being aimed at. Not using overly girly
or masculine colours help either gender to feel
comfortable reading it as they feel that it is for them.
The use of the greys, black and whites give it a uni-
sex feel. Also these colours give the magazine as
modern and professional feel to it.
• i show the age of my audience by how the
magazine is typed, it uses slang and is not written in
received pronunciation this will make it easily
relatable for my audience and make them feel
involved and like they share the same interests and
opinions as the artists being interviewed.
17. 5.How did you
attract/address your
audience?
• In my magazine to attract my audience i did many
different things for example the way in which i took
the photos. The photos i took were mad too look
very professional and to make the people in them
look good, so they could be represented as role
models for the readers to look up to and identity
with.
18. • When doing my research for my magazine my
surveys showed that people would be willing to pay
around £2-3 for a magazine, and due to the fact i
would be releasing my magazine once a month i
feel like £3 would be the best price as its what
people said they would pay but it is also expensive
enough to make the magazine a better quality and
not cheap and tacky.
19. • The model i have used show teenagers in a positive
light, they are well dressed showing they are
fashionable and unto date. The girls used have
been shown in a typical girly way, being used for
the male gaze to help attract the male audience and
then also shown to be role models to attract the
female audience as they can be role models for the
girls to look up to and aspire to be and look like.
20. • My primary audience is young adultsteenagers
both male and female who are modern and into the
new music trends, for example they keep up to date
with the changing charts and are often going to
music concerts. They would also be very sociable
and have lots of friends and also keep up with
fashion trends too. I have aimed it more at middle
class to which can be seen through the magazine in
the quality of the magazine and the things included
inside.
