kayaking magazine, the reader
would be educating themselves on

environmental knowledge
People read magazines for different reasons. Most of theses reasons can link to
uses and gratifications of magazines.
-Finding models of behaviour
-Identifying with media role
models
-Gaining in site of ones self
-Finding reinforcement of
personal values
Having a substitute for real-life
companionship
-Enabling someone to carry out
social interaction with family, friends
and society
-finding a basis for social interaction
-Identifying with others and gaining a
sense of belonging
-gaining an incite into circumstances
of others-social empathy.
In order to find out if
there was a need for
my type of magazine, I
made a questionnaire
on ‘survey Monkey’.
When I had made it, I
posted it onto social
networking sites such
as . I
collected my data
and was able to
analyse it. This helped
me decide what
colours and proved to
me there was a
market for my
magazine.
Find my survey here-

Based on my audience research, I could see there was a gap in the market
for a niche hybrid magazine combining pop and indie music aimed at
teenage females.
I tried to make my magazine interesting and specifically aimed at my target
audience. I used feminine but dark colours to accommodate my product to
my target audience.
The primary audience for my product would be
females between the ages 14-21. As my magazine is
of a hybrid genre which includes pop music and
indie music and although the indie music may
appeal to males, I would class them as being more of
a secondary audience. I think that the majority of the
articles and features I will look to include will be more
influenced for a female audience. I will make a music
magazine because I think the majority of people
listen to music and therefor my magazine will sell well.
I would have a secondary audience of males. This is
because when their partner or someone in their
family buys the magazine, because it is a hybrid and
has inside music in it to, the article in the magazine
might appeal and therefore they will read the
magazine.
The demographic for my product would be basically be people who like listening to music and
also enjoy reading the gossip and information about the A-listers . These are people who watch
TV such as E4 and shop and mainstream shops such as New look but also places such as
Athlecks palace .
My magazine represents an
audience in these ways:-
Through the use of text. Displaying
relatable text of what my target
audience would be interested in reading.
The choice of ‘mise en scene’
having clothing that looks casual
like what my readers would wear
Through the use of images. This defines the
genre of the magazine for example if it was a
Goth magazine it would have a Goth on the
front. This represents the image of the reader.
In order for readers to buy my magazine, the main central image on the front
cover has to look relatable and appealing to a reader. In order to achieve this,
my image has to look inviting. I hope to do this by putting the person in the
image in clothes that look like they are off the high street, so the reader can
aspire to look like them and it is achievable. Also on the main image has to
represent someone the reader would like to be like, whether this be a celebrity
or just someone who is dressed nicely, I feel like my reader should aspire to be
like the person. I would link my magazine most closely to NME for achieving this.
the person on my main image has to be quite a main steam star. I based the
appearance of my cover star on the main singer from the Killers- Brandon
Flowers.
On this image, he is using direct
gaze to interact with a viewer,
not only are his eyes the key
signifier of the image, the
colour of them also is attractive
for a teenage audience as
they would find the eye colour
appealing and it could
potentially influence them in
their sense of style
The ‘mise en scene’ of the
image could be seen as quite
casual. He is wearing a
fashionable jumper which can
be brought on the high street
in a pretty main steam colour.
As my magazine appeals to
girls the use of the colour
purple would appeal to them
as it is a feminine colour, and
would make the boy in the
image more appealing as girls
would see him as ‘in touch with
his feminine side’ therefore
creating more appeal.
On the image, the star is wearing
an earing, this is very main stream
and popular at the moment, this
represents teenagers well as it
presents their style and could
influence someone to get their
ear pierced.
His body language also represents
teenagers. For example he has his
hand son his pockets and is slightly
leant forward, this is a casual pose
which could suggest he is
interested or looking at something
creating an enigma code within
an audience.
On the image, he has a stylish
male hair do, this is very main
stream and would represent a
typical teenage boy, but also a
good looking boy that girls would
find attractive, creating appeal
and desire on my magazine
This image also uses direct
gaze. As we can see, she’s
wearing make up to enhance
her lips and make them stand
out. This represents my
audience as this is the sort of
style that people who listen to
certain genres of music would
listen to. The use of direct gaze
interacts with the audience
and the vibrant eye colour
draws he reader to them and
creates an interact with a
reader,. Her facial expressions
look stern so this would create
an enigma code of what she is
thinking about.
Her body language is feminine
but also suggests authority and
control. The way her belly
button is showing shows that
she is stylish and my influence
someone that aspires to be like
her to buy clothes similar to
what she is wearing.
The use of a casual hair doo,
suggests that to a reader that
being like her isn't unachievable
this also represents my audience
as she looks stylish and casual but
at the same time in my magazine
would be someone for my readers
to aspire to be like.
Her nails and choice of
jewellery also make her look
fashionable, the white and
red nails connote innocence
but the red may show there
is a darker side to her, also
the band on her arm is from
a gig, representing my
audience as people who are
interested and enjoy going to
gigs, like teenagers would
This image also uses direct
gaze. It shows off the
earing he is wearing which
is mainstream and
represents my audience as
they are in fashion at the
moment. The slanted body
language connotes a
more playful side to him
and his facial expression
shows he is happy and him
showing his teeth shows he
is normal even though in
the magazine he would be
someone to aspire to be
like.
The position and hand action
he is doing connotes a ‘flirty-
ness’ to him with is linked to the
image also that he is confident
and not ashamed of who he is.
This represents my audience
and girls would like this and
she him as a bit of a heart
throb. The gold ring on his
finger shows that he is mature
but also show he cares about
his appearance and likes to
keep up his image.
The mise en scene of the
image is him in a green jumper
and jeans, this is a casual outfit
which shows he is just normal
and likes the same clothes as
what is on the high-street. This
represents my audience would
wear as boys would wear
similar clothes and girls would
think this is a nice outfit and
would encourage boys to
wear something similar.
The company that would publish my magazine would be 'Bauer Media
Group‘ who also publish Kerrang magazine. I would make my magazine a
rival magazine to other magazines in order to get as many
readers and customers as possible. My magazine will be
published monthly and will priced at ÂŁ2.99. I think this a suitable
Price as its not too much and as it is only monthly they would
Have to pay. It means my magazine can be more expensive
Than weekly magazines as it is published less frequently.
In order to keep brand loyalty, I used convergence with other media
products such as Facebook and put links on to the website on every page
so even when we’re not publishing a magazine they still have access to the
information and new articles online to divert them from buying another
product while waiting for the next issue of ‘revolution’ to be published. I will
make my magazine thick and full of information as it is only published
monthly so this means I can put more stories in it then I could if it was weekly.
Another way I will promote my
magazine is by merchandising. I will
make these available in shops such
as HMV but will also give them away
in special issues of my magazine. Not
only will this be a reminder to the
person wearing it/using it to buy the
magazine, but also it will promote
the magazine to people who see the
item.
I will also make an app for my
magazine which makes the
magazine available to every
smartphone user so it is accessible all
the time in many different ways.
In order to create loyalty with
my customers and create a
dedication to the magazine. I
based the price of my
subscription on the price of
NME’s subscription price. As we
can see on the image its ÂŁ32.48.
I researched this before putting
a price onto my subscription. I
thought this was suitable price
because for my magazine it
works out cheaper to buy the
subscription than buy the
monthly magazine from a shop.
I will make my magazine
accessible from all different
media products for example on
the internet I would create a
website and Facebook page as
well as a Twitter one.
REVOLUTION MAG
My magazine front cover shows
most of the conventions and
codes of most other magazines.
For example, it has the barcode
on the front cover, which is a
convention of any magazine.
However, in order to make it
specifically a music magazine, I
had to add different codes and
conventions to suit the genre, this
was especially difficult because
my magazine has a hybrid genre
so I have to accommodate to 2
different types of viewers these
annotations will show why and
what I had to do.
Strapline- based on my
audience research, I
found that these were
the most popular band.
This is why I put them
on the front cover as it
means they will appeal
to a wider target

I chose to compare the
following magazines to my
magazine's because they
all fall under one of the
genres in my magazine,
‘we love pop’ for example
links to the pop genre in my
magazine. It was difficult
balancing out hybrid
genre, but looking at the
codes and conventions of
other magazines helped
me to include and equal
amount of indie music to
pop music. My magazine
and this magazine share
many codes and
conventions.

My double page spread uses conventional codes and conventions in order to fulfil its
purpose, for example, it has a headline a stand first and a drop cap, a main central
image and grey boxes. Each of these are important to making a double page spread. I
put the questions in a different colour to the writing this is to make it clear to the reader
that the questions and answers are. I used a pull out quote to break up the text in order
for the reader to skim read but also create and enigma code to why the person is saying
that. The use of the banner at the bottom gave the article and interesting spark and told
the reader initially what type of article it was going to be. All of these are convention of
music magazine. The star in my interview is a music star which is conventional of music
magazine and is promoting a tour. My article uses anchorage and the pictures all use
direct gaze to interact with the reader. It uses page numbers aswell which is also
conventional. I also wrote in columns

My contents page took my the longest to do as in my opinion this is the most important page
in the magazine. It helps the reader navigate around the magazine and find what they are
looking for. My contents page uses convergence of social networking sites such as twitter,
facebook and tumblr. It uses a by-line to tell who took the picture, it also has the web address,
issue number and date of publishing on it. Conventionally I put a subscription box on my
magazine as when I was doing research I found that most magazine has a ‘subscribe’ part to
the contents page. Typically it he pace numbers, what the articles called and a brief
Description of that the article is and what its about. It
conventionally has a editors note which briefly
describes what is in the magazine and I split up the
genre of the article into sections ‘music’ and ‘regulare’
so it was easier for a reader to navigate around. I only
used one image (excluding the image of the editor)
this is unconventional, but I felt if I put anymore on
the page would look to crowed and it wouldn’t look
good. I also gave it the obvious title of contents so
readers would know what the page was

Genre:
The genre is a hybrid genre. This includes indie music and pop music. this is
portrayed through the look of the cover stars and the mise en scene of the
shot. It is also portrayed through the other stars included in the magazine
and through the use of language and buzz words on the cover, for example
‘sensation’
Gender:
My magazine is aimed primarily at females but could also target males that
are interested in the same music and artists included on the front cover. The
cover star is a male which may seem strange as my magazine is aimed at
females, but by putting a good looking male on the front cover makes him
seem desirable to girls and therefore they will be more attracted to the
magazine.
Age:
The target audience for my magazine is mainly aimed at teenagers from the
age of 14 up to about 22. The cover star is within this age range so the
reader can relate and aspire to be like him.
It would be in a socio economic group of E
Banner- usually this would show a unique selling point
of the magazine. As this could be the first thing a
viewer would see on a page, it would have to be
something desirable to a reader of the target
audience. By using buzz words such as ‘exclusive’ it
makes it seem like a big deal and also it relates to the
dialect that someone of my target audience would
use.
Strap line/ secondary images- I made my
magazine seem attractive by including
some of the bands that were most popular
when conducting my research. By
including bands with a similar music genre
it re-enforces the genre of the magazine.
Main central image- by putting someone of a
similar age range to my target audience it
creates a relatable appeal to my magazine.
As well as this it by putting a good looking
male on the cover he creates a desirable
approach for girls towards the magazine.
Also, the text under neigh which is the main
cover line uses an enigma code and the use
of direct gaze makes the reader feel more
involved in the magazine, making it more
attractive. It also uses anchorage
Strap line/pug- the use of the word ‘free’ attracts a
reader because they feel like they are getting value
for money with the magazine. It acts as a persuasive
technique because it would encourage a interested
buyer to get the magazine because they are getting
more for their money, this is particularly important in a
magazine for my target audience because they
might not get lot and they would want to get the
most out of what they get.
Title- colours of title match that of the colour scheme
so helps create brand identity also the use of the title
makes it easier for a reader to navigate around the
magazine and it stands out so if they need to refer
back to the page it is easy to find. The repartition of
the logo means there is more chance of them
remembering it for future references.
Subscription box- this makes it easier for
regular buyers to have access to the
magazine. This creates appeal because it is a
no hassle way to access the magazine. It also
helps to create customer loyalty. By making it
seem like the buyer has got good deal buying
them all at once makes the magazine seem
more appealing as it makes the reader feel
like they would be getting good value for
money.
Links- by having links box, this
creates convergence with other
media products, also it mean
the magazine is more accessible
creating appeal because the
magazine can be accessed at
anytime on any of the
applications. This means even
when the magazine is not being
published readers will still have
access, also this may even
encourage ne readers who like
the look of the magazines
pages.
Page numbers and brief
description- this is where a
reader would come to look
what is in the magazine. Many
readers would do this before
buying the magazine to see if
what is in the magazine is
appealing to them. This helps
a reader navigate around the
magazine so they can quickly
find what they are looking for.
By including the dividers it
makes it even easier to do this
because the reader would
have to waste time. Making it
simpler and more appealing
Title/ headline - using a quote from the article creates an
enigma code for the reader, also it could briefly explain
what the article I bout. As this is the first thing reader could
see it would tell the reader whether this is the type of article
the reader would be interested in reading. This quote suits
the genre of the article as it sounds witty which could link to
the text in the article.
Main central image- this is
an image of who the article
is bout. This attracts a reader
as it stands out on a page.
On this image it looks playful
which could connote that’s
what the contents of the
article will be like. Also there
is a grey box which anchors
to the image. This gives a
brief description of what is
on the image or a quote.
Images attract an audience
because the direct gaze will
make a reader feel more
involved I n the article and
also makes for easy reading.
Pull out quote- this breaks up
the text so it doesn't seem
intimidating on the page. It
would also be something that
would stand out to reader if
they were just glancing over
the page and creates appeal
by creating an enigma code
and by making the article seem
more interesting and exciting.
In some cases this could be
anchorage to the picture or
article. Not only that a pull out
quote makes an article seem
more exciting and changes
from genre to genre.
On this first image, I have changed
the eye colour from the original
image. To do this I used the lasso
tool to draw round the coloured part
of the eye, the I made a new layer
called a hue and saturation layer.
Then all I had to do was choose the
colour of eye I think would look best.
I wanted it to look subtle, but
obvious. I chose this blue colour
because I think it look natural but it is
still stands out when you look at the
image.
How I achieved this- Next slide
On the first image, I have changed the eye colour from
the original image. To do this I used the lasso tool to
draw round the coloured part of the eye, the I made a
new layer called a hue and saturation layer. Then all I
had to do was choose the colour of eye I think would
look best. I wanted it to look subtle, but obvious. I chose
this blue colour because I think it look natural but it is still
obvious when you look at the image.
Secondly, I changed the colour of the lips. I wanted the
reader to be drawn to them straight away when looking
at the image. Firstly, I used the lasso tool to roughly
trace round the edge of the lips. Then I used the feather
tool to make sure the colouring wasn't to severe. I set it
to 3. the I chose the colour lip sick I wanted to be
added to my image. I chose the pink/purple colour as it
meant it would match in with the colour scheme of my
magazine giving it an aspect of consistency throughout
the magazine.
Thirdly, on this image I dramatically change the hair
colour from blond to purple. To do this I had to make a
new layer with the hue and saturation. Then I chose a
colour I wanted. The only problem was that It turned the
whole image that colour. So then I had to had the hue
and saturation and use the paintbrush to draw on where
I wanted the colour to be. I had to turn the saturation
quite low so the hair effect would still show through.
Then I feathered in at the roots to make it look natural.
Since I chose purple, I have played around with the hair
colour as I think it look too much in contrast to the eyes
and the lips
Fourthly, on the original image, one of the false nails
was missing of her finger. So I simply used the lasso tool
to draw round a nail about the same size, I copied it
and pasted it onto the missing nail. Then I enlarged it
so it fit the nail right.
Fifthly On this image I have simply played around with
the eye and hair colour to try and make it all look
natural but stand out. I have left the hair so it has a
slight red tinge but is predominantly a grey/blond
colour. I have made the eyes so that they are a bight
green, but not so green that they couldn't be natural.
I think this makes this makes the glisten and stand out.
This is my final image, I used the magic wand tool to
remove the background of the image so I could add
my own at a late date.

This was my original image once I
had removed the back ground.
Using the magic wand tool on
Adobe Photoshop. As you can
see it looks average and I thought
it needed something added to it
to make it a bit more indie and
alternative to better suit my genre
and target audience.
I added a hue and saturation layer
and selected ‘colourise’ which
made everything green. Then I
used the rubber and rubbed out
the green on his face and jeans.
This is what I ended with. I turned
the saturation quite low so the
rubbing out didn't have to be
prefect. This has give me the idea
to use different colours on my
double page spread,
3

1
2 3
On my first try, I didn’t include a
back ground as I trying to make it
look simplistic and sophisticated but
when I thought about it didn’t suit
my genre. The cover looks bare and
empty. All I have edited on this is
the logo and the main central
image. I think on my next try I am
going to edit the plan and put the
strap lines in different places and try
not to make the text un readable
On my second attempt I added
more features such as a banner
and more images and strap lines.
However I still think it looks empty
and the back ground still doesn’t fit
the target audience. Also in some
places the text still cant be read so I
am going to fix this on my final
piece. I am going to change the
colour of the back ground and add
more features to make the USP
stand out even more.
On my final try I put a bright
background in to highlight the
image in the center and I added
more features such as a banner
and more secondary images. I
made sure everything would be
readable and nothing was
overlapping. I sorted out the layers
to add texture to my piece and I’m
really happy with how It looks.
•With my front cover I tried to use the
conventional layout of a magazine front
cover. I used anchorage aswell just like
other magazines to anchor the image
•I placed black and red text on a off
white background
•I used the bright red to create focal
points and to show the contrast from
the black and white
•I used an odd number of features on
either side of the star to show the
fullness of the magazine
•I anchored the name of the star on the
image to let the reader know who he is
•With my first contents page I tried to
use the conventional lay out of columns
and all the conventional feature such as
page numbers and text and 1-5 images.
•I placed white text on the black
background to show contrast between
the Aquinas colours
•I used an editors letter to show a
personal but conventional touch to the
magazine. I used a font that looked like
hand writing in order to make this look
like a real signature
•I used dividers to make navigation
easier and also I put equal number of
features on each side to create
symmetry

Banner- usually this would show a unique selling point
of the magazine. As this could be the first thing a
viewer would see on a page, it would have to be
something desirable to a reader of the target
audience. By using buzz words such as ‘exclusive’ it
makes it seem like a big deal. The basic rectangle
shape and the colours are consistent so creates brand
identity and matches the college colours.
Pug- Button is relatable to both male
and female audiences and
promotes a fun activity which will
encourage them to read on. Reader
feels like they are getting value for
money because they are free and
would encourage them to purchase
the magazine. The natural colour
makes it appeal to both sex’s
Main central image and
anchorage- the main
central image is the first
thing a reader would
see so depending on
who is on the front
cover. The casual look
of the image suggest
the magazine will be
easy going and easy
reading. The
anchorage to the
image tells the reader
who the person on the
image is and the quote
gives a brief insight into
what the article is
about, meaning the
reader knows if they ill
be interested or not.
Super imposed- as the star super imposes on the mast
head, this suggest that the reader would know would
already know what the magazine was as it is so
popular. Also the bold black and red front colours
stand out more against the white of the back ground.
Making the masthead stand out on a news stand.
Links- this creates convergence with different media
products and makes the magazine accessible at any time.
I think this is a good thing as it helps create brand loyalty
and addresses my target audience by relating to
something they would use and making it easy for them to
access the magazine

put the page numbers in red in
order to make it stand out
against the black background. I
wanted it to stand out because I
thought they were the most
important things, then I put the
title of the page in white so this
stood out equally as much. I put
the description in gray so It
didn’t stand out as much as it is
a just a description and its only if
the reader is interested in the
article that they would need to
read the description. I think the
description is important however
because if a viewer didn’t now
what to read this would
encourage them to read the
article and se if they are
interested in it
Subscription box- by putting in a
subscription box it allows the reader
to have access to the magazine
easily. This helps create brand loyalty.
I made the box grey so it didn’t stand
out to much on the page so readers
didn’t feel pressured into buying the
subscription but it stands out enough
to be noticed on the page. I put the
price in red so it stands out and it
draws the readers attention to it and
it looks like a barging and the reader
feels like they have got value for
money. On reflection this is quite an
old fashioned way of applying for a
subscription and many magazines
now do this process online however I
think it is still okay to use this method
and it makes my magazine look fuller
Another think we had to learn
was conventional features to
different parts of magazines.
To do this we annotated a
front cover, a contents page
and a double page spread. Is
meant we could make our
products accurate and use
real life conventions on our
magazines, as well as this, I
broadened our knowledge of
key words which we could
use in different places during
the coursework.
The cover star is using direct
gaze which interacts with the
audience and makes them feel
more involved. Also it shows that
the cover star is confident and is
happy to interact with the
viewer.
I used adobe photoshop to
change the colour of her
cardigan to suit the back
ground and the red on it to suit
the colour scheme. She is
wearing casual clothing showing
the audience she is just a normal
person. She is the same age as
my target audience so she can
be relatable and the reader can
aspire to be like her.
The bare background puts all
the attention on the cover star
as she is the only thing in a bare,
empty space.
In preparation to make my magazine, there were a
few things we had to learn first. One of these being
the rule of thirds. This helped us to achieve good
and accurate and central photos to put on our
magazines.
The rule of thirds
The rule of thirds is when a 3x3 grid is drawn onto a
picture. The rule of thirds is enforced when the
target (when taking picture of people) is in line with
the 4 central intersections. The rule of thirds is mostly
used in photography but can be used in designs,
films and paintings. Ideally the focus' eyes will be
situated on the top horizontal line but depending
on the shot this is not always possible. The main
point of the rule of thirds is to draw a viewers
attention to a certain part of a picture.
In order to make our front covers as realistic as possible, we had to
take the perfect photo which would be a medium close up. We then
had to make a contact sheet and tick photos that were appropriate
and cross ones that wouldn’t be by using the rule of thirds.
As part of my re search I had to look at different fonts I would use on
my front cover. I chose to use number 2 as I feel it matched the
genre of my magazine the best. This font is called impact and I feel
like it connotes a industrial, modern feel

Teen Music Magazine Appeals to Young Readers

  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 3. the reader of the magazine will be educating themselves on the contents of the magazine. For example if it was a kayaking magazine, the reader would be educating themselves on good rivers to visit that are promoted -Satisfying personal interest and curiosity -Seeking advice on practical matters or opinions and decision choices -Filling time - Emotional release -Escaping or being diverted from problems -Relaxing -Getting essential cultural or environmental knowledge People read magazines for different reasons. Most of theses reasons can link to uses and gratifications of magazines.
  • 4. -Finding models of behaviour -Identifying with media role models -Gaining in site of ones self -Finding reinforcement of personal values Having a substitute for real-life companionship -Enabling someone to carry out social interaction with family, friends and society -finding a basis for social interaction -Identifying with others and gaining a sense of belonging -gaining an incite into circumstances of others-social empathy.
  • 5. In order to find out if there was a need for my type of magazine, I made a questionnaire on ‘survey Monkey’. When I had made it, I posted it onto social networking sites such as . I collected my data and was able to analyse it. This helped me decide what colours and proved to me there was a market for my magazine. Find my survey here- http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/328VDKF
  • 6. Based on my audience research, I could see there was a gap in the market for a niche hybrid magazine combining pop and indie music aimed at teenage females. I tried to make my magazine interesting and specifically aimed at my target audience. I used feminine but dark colours to accommodate my product to my target audience.
  • 7. The primary audience for my product would be females between the ages 14-21. As my magazine is of a hybrid genre which includes pop music and indie music and although the indie music may appeal to males, I would class them as being more of a secondary audience. I think that the majority of the articles and features I will look to include will be more influenced for a female audience. I will make a music magazine because I think the majority of people listen to music and therefor my magazine will sell well. I would have a secondary audience of males. This is because when their partner or someone in their family buys the magazine, because it is a hybrid and has inside music in it to, the article in the magazine might appeal and therefore they will read the magazine.
  • 8. The demographic for my product would be basically be people who like listening to music and also enjoy reading the gossip and information about the A-listers . These are people who watch TV such as E4 and shop and mainstream shops such as New look but also places such as Athlecks palace .
  • 9. My magazine represents an audience in these ways:- Through the use of text. Displaying relatable text of what my target audience would be interested in reading. The choice of ‘mise en scene’ having clothing that looks casual like what my readers would wear Through the use of images. This defines the genre of the magazine for example if it was a Goth magazine it would have a Goth on the front. This represents the image of the reader.
  • 10. In order for readers to buy my magazine, the main central image on the front cover has to look relatable and appealing to a reader. In order to achieve this, my image has to look inviting. I hope to do this by putting the person in the image in clothes that look like they are off the high street, so the reader can aspire to look like them and it is achievable. Also on the main image has to represent someone the reader would like to be like, whether this be a celebrity or just someone who is dressed nicely, I feel like my reader should aspire to be like the person. I would link my magazine most closely to NME for achieving this. the person on my main image has to be quite a main steam star. I based the appearance of my cover star on the main singer from the Killers- Brandon Flowers.
  • 11. On this image, he is using direct gaze to interact with a viewer, not only are his eyes the key signifier of the image, the colour of them also is attractive for a teenage audience as they would find the eye colour appealing and it could potentially influence them in their sense of style The ‘mise en scene’ of the image could be seen as quite casual. He is wearing a fashionable jumper which can be brought on the high street in a pretty main steam colour. As my magazine appeals to girls the use of the colour purple would appeal to them as it is a feminine colour, and would make the boy in the image more appealing as girls would see him as ‘in touch with his feminine side’ therefore creating more appeal. On the image, the star is wearing an earing, this is very main stream and popular at the moment, this represents teenagers well as it presents their style and could influence someone to get their ear pierced. His body language also represents teenagers. For example he has his hand son his pockets and is slightly leant forward, this is a casual pose which could suggest he is interested or looking at something creating an enigma code within an audience. On the image, he has a stylish male hair do, this is very main stream and would represent a typical teenage boy, but also a good looking boy that girls would find attractive, creating appeal and desire on my magazine
  • 12. This image also uses direct gaze. As we can see, she’s wearing make up to enhance her lips and make them stand out. This represents my audience as this is the sort of style that people who listen to certain genres of music would listen to. The use of direct gaze interacts with the audience and the vibrant eye colour draws he reader to them and creates an interact with a reader,. Her facial expressions look stern so this would create an enigma code of what she is thinking about. Her body language is feminine but also suggests authority and control. The way her belly button is showing shows that she is stylish and my influence someone that aspires to be like her to buy clothes similar to what she is wearing. The use of a casual hair doo, suggests that to a reader that being like her isn't unachievable this also represents my audience as she looks stylish and casual but at the same time in my magazine would be someone for my readers to aspire to be like. Her nails and choice of jewellery also make her look fashionable, the white and red nails connote innocence but the red may show there is a darker side to her, also the band on her arm is from a gig, representing my audience as people who are interested and enjoy going to gigs, like teenagers would
  • 13. This image also uses direct gaze. It shows off the earing he is wearing which is mainstream and represents my audience as they are in fashion at the moment. The slanted body language connotes a more playful side to him and his facial expression shows he is happy and him showing his teeth shows he is normal even though in the magazine he would be someone to aspire to be like. The position and hand action he is doing connotes a ‘flirty- ness’ to him with is linked to the image also that he is confident and not ashamed of who he is. This represents my audience and girls would like this and she him as a bit of a heart throb. The gold ring on his finger shows that he is mature but also show he cares about his appearance and likes to keep up his image. The mise en scene of the image is him in a green jumper and jeans, this is a casual outfit which shows he is just normal and likes the same clothes as what is on the high-street. This represents my audience would wear as boys would wear similar clothes and girls would think this is a nice outfit and would encourage boys to wear something similar.
  • 14. The company that would publish my magazine would be 'Bauer Media Group‘ who also publish Kerrang magazine. I would make my magazine a rival magazine to other magazines in order to get as many readers and customers as possible. My magazine will be published monthly and will priced at ÂŁ2.99. I think this a suitable Price as its not too much and as it is only monthly they would Have to pay. It means my magazine can be more expensive Than weekly magazines as it is published less frequently. In order to keep brand loyalty, I used convergence with other media products such as Facebook and put links on to the website on every page so even when we’re not publishing a magazine they still have access to the information and new articles online to divert them from buying another product while waiting for the next issue of ‘revolution’ to be published. I will make my magazine thick and full of information as it is only published monthly so this means I can put more stories in it then I could if it was weekly.
  • 15. Another way I will promote my magazine is by merchandising. I will make these available in shops such as HMV but will also give them away in special issues of my magazine. Not only will this be a reminder to the person wearing it/using it to buy the magazine, but also it will promote the magazine to people who see the item. I will also make an app for my magazine which makes the magazine available to every smartphone user so it is accessible all the time in many different ways.
  • 16. In order to create loyalty with my customers and create a dedication to the magazine. I based the price of my subscription on the price of NME’s subscription price. As we can see on the image its ÂŁ32.48. I researched this before putting a price onto my subscription. I thought this was suitable price because for my magazine it works out cheaper to buy the subscription than buy the monthly magazine from a shop.

  • 18. My magazine front cover shows most of the conventions and codes of most other magazines. For example, it has the barcode on the front cover, which is a convention of any magazine. However, in order to make it specifically a music magazine, I had to add different codes and conventions to suit the genre, this was especially difficult because my magazine has a hybrid genre so I have to accommodate to 2 different types of viewers these annotations will show why and what I had to do. Strapline- based on my audience research, I found that these were the most popular band. This is why I put them on the front cover as it means they will appeal to a wider target audience Masthead- in the top left corner which is conventional of any magazine. Slogan- the choice of language in the slogan not only promotes the music in the magazine, but the magazine its self as well. Main central image- conventional . Model using direct gaze Key signifier- eyes are the first thing a reader would see, direct gaze interacts and involves the reader Unique selling point- the main article would be the reason people bought the magazine Secondary images Pull quote- creates an enigma code for the reader to want to know why Barcode and issue number and date and price Main cover line strapline Anchorage Purple black and white colour scheme Price stands out so it looks cheaper and it is more noticable
  • 19. I chose to compare the following magazines to my magazine's because they all fall under one of the genres in my magazine, ‘we love pop’ for example links to the pop genre in my magazine. It was difficult balancing out hybrid genre, but looking at the codes and conventions of other magazines helped me to include and equal amount of indie music to pop music. My magazine and this magazine share many codes and conventions. Banner- typical or any magazine and promotes the contents of the magazine to a buyer Masthead- in the top left corner which is conventional of any magazine. • 21. My double page spread uses conventional codes and conventions in order to fulfil its purpose, for example, it has a headline a stand first and a drop cap, a main central image and grey boxes. Each of these are important to making a double page spread. I put the questions in a different colour to the writing this is to make it clear to the reader that the questions and answers are. I used a pull out quote to break up the text in order for the reader to skim read but also create and enigma code to why the person is saying that. The use of the banner at the bottom gave the article and interesting spark and told the reader initially what type of article it was going to be. All of these are convention of music magazine. The star in my interview is a music star which is conventional of music magazine and is promoting a tour. My article uses anchorage and the pictures all use direct gaze to interact with the reader. It uses page numbers aswell which is also conventional. I also wrote in columns

  • 24. My contents page took my the longest to do as in my opinion this is the most important page in the magazine. It helps the reader navigate around the magazine and find what they are looking for. My contents page uses convergence of social networking sites such as twitter, facebook and tumblr. It uses a by-line to tell who took the picture, it also has the web address, issue number and date of publishing on it. Conventionally I put a subscription box on my magazine as when I was doing research I found that most magazine has a ‘subscribe’ part to the contents page. Typically it he pace numbers, what the articles called and a brief Description of that the article is and what its about. It conventionally has a editors note which briefly describes what is in the magazine and I split up the genre of the article into sections ‘music’ and ‘regulare’ so it was easier for a reader to navigate around. I only used one image (excluding the image of the editor) this is unconventional, but I felt if I put anymore on the page would look to crowed and it wouldn’t look good. I also gave it the obvious title of contents so readers would know what the page was

  • 28. Genre: The genre is a hybrid genre. This includes indie music and pop music. this is portrayed through the look of the cover stars and the mise en scene of the shot. It is also portrayed through the other stars included in the magazine and through the use of language and buzz words on the cover, for example ‘sensation’ Gender: My magazine is aimed primarily at females but could also target males that are interested in the same music and artists included on the front cover. The cover star is a male which may seem strange as my magazine is aimed at females, but by putting a good looking male on the front cover makes him seem desirable to girls and therefore they will be more attracted to the magazine. Age: The target audience for my magazine is mainly aimed at teenagers from the age of 14 up to about 22. The cover star is within this age range so the reader can relate and aspire to be like him. It would be in a socio economic group of E
  • 29. Banner- usually this would show a unique selling point of the magazine. As this could be the first thing a viewer would see on a page, it would have to be something desirable to a reader of the target audience. By using buzz words such as ‘exclusive’ it makes it seem like a big deal and also it relates to the dialect that someone of my target audience would use. Strap line/ secondary images- I made my magazine seem attractive by including some of the bands that were most popular when conducting my research. By including bands with a similar music genre it re-enforces the genre of the magazine. Main central image- by putting someone of a similar age range to my target audience it creates a relatable appeal to my magazine. As well as this it by putting a good looking male on the cover he creates a desirable approach for girls towards the magazine. Also, the text under neigh which is the main cover line uses an enigma code and the use of direct gaze makes the reader feel more involved in the magazine, making it more attractive. It also uses anchorage Strap line/pug- the use of the word ‘free’ attracts a reader because they feel like they are getting value for money with the magazine. It acts as a persuasive technique because it would encourage a interested buyer to get the magazine because they are getting more for their money, this is particularly important in a magazine for my target audience because they might not get lot and they would want to get the most out of what they get.
  • 30. Title- colours of title match that of the colour scheme so helps create brand identity also the use of the title makes it easier for a reader to navigate around the magazine and it stands out so if they need to refer back to the page it is easy to find. The repartition of the logo means there is more chance of them remembering it for future references. Subscription box- this makes it easier for regular buyers to have access to the magazine. This creates appeal because it is a no hassle way to access the magazine. It also helps to create customer loyalty. By making it seem like the buyer has got good deal buying them all at once makes the magazine seem more appealing as it makes the reader feel like they would be getting good value for money. Links- by having links box, this creates convergence with other media products, also it mean the magazine is more accessible creating appeal because the magazine can be accessed at anytime on any of the applications. This means even when the magazine is not being published readers will still have access, also this may even encourage ne readers who like the look of the magazines pages. Page numbers and brief description- this is where a reader would come to look what is in the magazine. Many readers would do this before buying the magazine to see if what is in the magazine is appealing to them. This helps a reader navigate around the magazine so they can quickly find what they are looking for. By including the dividers it makes it even easier to do this because the reader would have to waste time. Making it simpler and more appealing
  • 31. Title/ headline - using a quote from the article creates an enigma code for the reader, also it could briefly explain what the article I bout. As this is the first thing reader could see it would tell the reader whether this is the type of article the reader would be interested in reading. This quote suits the genre of the article as it sounds witty which could link to the text in the article. Main central image- this is an image of who the article is bout. This attracts a reader as it stands out on a page. On this image it looks playful which could connote that’s what the contents of the article will be like. Also there is a grey box which anchors to the image. This gives a brief description of what is on the image or a quote. Images attract an audience because the direct gaze will make a reader feel more involved I n the article and also makes for easy reading. Pull out quote- this breaks up the text so it doesn't seem intimidating on the page. It would also be something that would stand out to reader if they were just glancing over the page and creates appeal by creating an enigma code and by making the article seem more interesting and exciting. In some cases this could be anchorage to the picture or article. Not only that a pull out quote makes an article seem more exciting and changes from genre to genre.
  • 32. On this first image, I have changed the eye colour from the original image. To do this I used the lasso tool to draw round the coloured part of the eye, the I made a new layer called a hue and saturation layer. Then all I had to do was choose the colour of eye I think would look best. I wanted it to look subtle, but obvious. I chose this blue colour because I think it look natural but it is still stands out when you look at the image.

  • 34. On the first image, I have changed the eye colour from the original image. To do this I used the lasso tool to draw round the coloured part of the eye, the I made a new layer called a hue and saturation layer. Then all I had to do was choose the colour of eye I think would look best. I wanted it to look subtle, but obvious. I chose this blue colour because I think it look natural but it is still obvious when you look at the image. Secondly, I changed the colour of the lips. I wanted the reader to be drawn to them straight away when looking at the image. Firstly, I used the lasso tool to roughly trace round the edge of the lips. Then I used the feather tool to make sure the colouring wasn't to severe. I set it to 3. the I chose the colour lip sick I wanted to be added to my image. I chose the pink/purple colour as it meant it would match in with the colour scheme of my magazine giving it an aspect of consistency throughout the magazine. Thirdly, on this image I dramatically change the hair colour from blond to purple. To do this I had to make a new layer with the hue and saturation. Then I chose a colour I wanted. The only problem was that It turned the whole image that colour. So then I had to had the hue and saturation and use the paintbrush to draw on where I wanted the colour to be. I had to turn the saturation quite low so the hair effect would still show through. Then I feathered in at the roots to make it look natural. Since I chose purple, I have played around with the hair colour as I think it look too much in contrast to the eyes and the lips Fourthly, on the original image, one of the false nails was missing of her finger. So I simply used the lasso tool to draw round a nail about the same size, I copied it and pasted it onto the missing nail. Then I enlarged it so it fit the nail right. Fifthly On this image I have simply played around with the eye and hair colour to try and make it all look natural but stand out. I have left the hair so it has a slight red tinge but is predominantly a grey/blond colour. I have made the eyes so that they are a bight green, but not so green that they couldn't be natural. I think this makes this makes the glisten and stand out. This is my final image, I used the magic wand tool to remove the background of the image so I could add my own at a late date.

  • 36. 1 This was my original image once I had removed the back ground. Using the magic wand tool on Adobe Photoshop. As you can see it looks average and I thought it needed something added to it to make it a bit more indie and alternative to better suit my genre and target audience. I added a hue and saturation layer and selected ‘colourise’ which made everything green. Then I used the rubber and rubbed out the green on his face and jeans. This is what I ended with. I turned the saturation quite low so the rubbing out didn't have to be prefect. This has give me the idea to use different colours on my double page spread, 3 2
  • 37. 1 2 3 On my first try, I didn’t include a back ground as I trying to make it look simplistic and sophisticated but when I thought about it didn’t suit my genre. The cover looks bare and empty. All I have edited on this is the logo and the main central image. I think on my next try I am going to edit the plan and put the strap lines in different places and try not to make the text un readable On my second attempt I added more features such as a banner and more images and strap lines. However I still think it looks empty and the back ground still doesn’t fit the target audience. Also in some places the text still cant be read so I am going to fix this on my final piece. I am going to change the colour of the back ground and add more features to make the USP stand out even more. On my final try I put a bright background in to highlight the image in the center and I added more features such as a banner and more secondary images. I made sure everything would be readable and nothing was overlapping. I sorted out the layers to add texture to my piece and I’m really happy with how It looks.

  • 39. •With my front cover I tried to use the conventional layout of a magazine front cover. I used anchorage aswell just like other magazines to anchor the image •I placed black and red text on a off white background •I used the bright red to create focal points and to show the contrast from the black and white •I used an odd number of features on either side of the star to show the fullness of the magazine •I anchored the name of the star on the image to let the reader know who he is
  • 40. •With my first contents page I tried to use the conventional lay out of columns and all the conventional feature such as page numbers and text and 1-5 images. •I placed white text on the black background to show contrast between the Aquinas colours •I used an editors letter to show a personal but conventional touch to the magazine. I used a font that looked like hand writing in order to make this look like a real signature •I used dividers to make navigation easier and also I put equal number of features on each side to create symmetry

  • 42. Banner- usually this would show a unique selling point of the magazine. As this could be the first thing a viewer would see on a page, it would have to be something desirable to a reader of the target audience. By using buzz words such as ‘exclusive’ it makes it seem like a big deal. The basic rectangle shape and the colours are consistent so creates brand identity and matches the college colours. Pug- Button is relatable to both male and female audiences and promotes a fun activity which will encourage them to read on. Reader feels like they are getting value for money because they are free and would encourage them to purchase the magazine. The natural colour makes it appeal to both sex’s Main central image and anchorage- the main central image is the first thing a reader would see so depending on who is on the front cover. The casual look of the image suggest the magazine will be easy going and easy reading. The anchorage to the image tells the reader who the person on the image is and the quote gives a brief insight into what the article is about, meaning the reader knows if they ill be interested or not. Super imposed- as the star super imposes on the mast head, this suggest that the reader would know would already know what the magazine was as it is so popular. Also the bold black and red front colours stand out more against the white of the back ground. Making the masthead stand out on a news stand.
  • 43. Links- this creates convergence with different media products and makes the magazine accessible at any time. I think this is a good thing as it helps create brand loyalty and addresses my target audience by relating to something they would use and making it easy for them to access the magazine Page numbers and description- I put the page numbers in red in order to make it stand out against the black background. I wanted it to stand out because I thought they were the most important things, then I put the title of the page in white so this stood out equally as much. I put the description in gray so It didn’t stand out as much as it is a just a description and its only if the reader is interested in the article that they would need to read the description. I think the description is important however because if a viewer didn’t now what to read this would encourage them to read the article and se if they are interested in it Subscription box- by putting in a subscription box it allows the reader to have access to the magazine easily. This helps create brand loyalty. I made the box grey so it didn’t stand out to much on the page so readers didn’t feel pressured into buying the subscription but it stands out enough to be noticed on the page. I put the price in red so it stands out and it draws the readers attention to it and it looks like a barging and the reader feels like they have got value for money. On reflection this is quite an old fashioned way of applying for a subscription and many magazines now do this process online however I think it is still okay to use this method and it makes my magazine look fuller
  • 44. Another think we had to learn was conventional features to different parts of magazines. To do this we annotated a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread. Is meant we could make our products accurate and use real life conventions on our magazines, as well as this, I broadened our knowledge of key words which we could use in different places during the coursework.
  • 45.
  • 46. The cover star is using direct gaze which interacts with the audience and makes them feel more involved. Also it shows that the cover star is confident and is happy to interact with the viewer. I used adobe photoshop to change the colour of her cardigan to suit the back ground and the red on it to suit the colour scheme. She is wearing casual clothing showing the audience she is just a normal person. She is the same age as my target audience so she can be relatable and the reader can aspire to be like her. The bare background puts all the attention on the cover star as she is the only thing in a bare, empty space.
  • 47. In preparation to make my magazine, there were a few things we had to learn first. One of these being the rule of thirds. This helped us to achieve good and accurate and central photos to put on our magazines. The rule of thirds The rule of thirds is when a 3x3 grid is drawn onto a picture. The rule of thirds is enforced when the target (when taking picture of people) is in line with the 4 central intersections. The rule of thirds is mostly used in photography but can be used in designs, films and paintings. Ideally the focus' eyes will be situated on the top horizontal line but depending on the shot this is not always possible. The main point of the rule of thirds is to draw a viewers attention to a certain part of a picture.
  • 48. In order to make our front covers as realistic as possible, we had to take the perfect photo which would be a medium close up. We then had to make a contact sheet and tick photos that were appropriate and cross ones that wouldn’t be by using the rule of thirds.
  • 49. As part of my re search I had to look at different fonts I would use on my front cover. I chose to use number 2 as I feel it matched the genre of my magazine the best. This font is called impact and I feel like it connotes a industrial, modern feel
