2. Russia Ukraine War: Why did Russia take
over Chernobyl?
 Russian forces have taken control over the Chernobyl nuclear power
plant, as per adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office, Mykhailo
Podolyak.
 Chernobyl was the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986
when one of the reactors exploded. The nuclear power plant is located
about 60 miles from Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
 Russia’s capture or Chernobyl in the early hours of their invasion of
Ukraine on February 24th made alarm bells go off in the West.
 Several questions arose from the capture including why would Russia
capture Chernobyl as one of its first targets in Ukraine?
 After all, Chernobyl is a radioactive wasteland that is largely deserted
after the deadly disaster in 1985.

3. Black Sea: Bordering Countries, Map, Location
 Russia shocked the world with its full-scale attack on Ukraine by all three
mediums- land, sea and air on February 24, 2022.
 The Western Allies of Ukraine have responded with harsh sanctions on Russia,
while Ukraine pleads for more support as it cannot hold off attacks from
Russia and its mighty army any longer.
 Ukraine has requested NATO member Turkey, which shares a maritime border
with both Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea, to close of the Bosphorus and
Dardanelles straits to Russian ships in order to stop them from coming to
Ukraine.
 Turkey has control over the str
 aits under the 1936 Montreux Convention and can limit passing of the
warships from the region. This has put Turkey in a tough spot, as it shares
close relations with both Russia and Ukraine. While Turkey has opposed
sanctions on Russia, it has also described Russia's invasion of Ukraine as
unacceptable.
 Earlier this month, six Russian warships and a submarine had crossed the
Dardanelles and Bosphorus Straits to the Black Sea for what Moscow called
naval drills near Ukraine waters.

4. What is NATO and What is it's purpose? How
many Countries are in NATO?
 NATO is a military alliance that was formed in 1949 by 12 countries,
including the US, Canada, the UK and France.
 NATO's full form is North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
 NATO was formed largely to counter the threat from the Soviet Union
post World War II.
 The USSR had created its own military alliance in 1955 to counter
NATO, called the Warsaw pact.
 Warsaw got disbanded with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990
and several of Warsaw pact countries became NATO members.
 NATO alliance has a total of 30 member countries. Under the alliance,
the member countries have agreed to come to one another's aid in the
event of armed attack against any one member state.

 Russia on February 24, 2022, declared war on Ukraine with
the announcement of a military operation in the
neighboring country.
 With the world struggling with a deadly pandemic, the latest
move by Russia will only add more difficulties for the
recovering economies of various countries around the world,
including India.
 Russia Ukraine war in a day resulted in a major loss in the
stock market which further prompted an emergency
meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman on the evening of February 24.
 The Government, reportedly, is trying to come up with
strategies that can minimize the loss that the war can bring
on the Indian Economy.

 The Russia-Ukraine conflict is long running, as Russia claims
Ukraine to be a part of its country and is dead against

 Russian President looks to reclaim the former Soviet Union
Republic.
 He asked the Ukrainian military to lay down their arms.
 Both Russia and Ukraine were part of the 15 Republics that
made up the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) before
its dissolution in 1991.

7. Russia-Ukraine crisis: PM Modi speaks to
President Putin, appeals for immediate end
of violence in Ukraine
 Prime Minister Modi, amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, spoke
to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin in a telephonic
conversation and appealed for an immediate cessation of violence
by Russia in Ukraine.
 The Prime Minister also asserted that the differences between
Russia and NATO can only be resolved through an ‘honest and
sincere' dialogue.
 PM Modi, during his conversation also sensitized the Russian
President about India’s concern regarding the safety of the citizens
of India in Ukraine, particularly the students, and conveyed that the
country attaches the highest priority to their safe exit and return to
India.
 The telephonic conversation between PM Modi and Putin has
come after on February 24, 2022, the Russian President announced
a military operation in Ukraine with the purpose of invading the
neighboring country.

8. National War Memorial's 3rd Anniversary
 National War Memorial's 3rd anniversary was observed on
February 25, 2022. The Chiefs of the Indian Army, the Indian
Navy and the Indian Air Force laid wreaths at the National
War Memorial to commemorate the occasion.
 The Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Air Marshal BR Krishna
also laid a wreath at the National War Memorial today on this
occasion.
 The National War Memorial was dedicated to the nation by
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25, 2019.
 The national war memorial was built in remembrance of the
valour and sacrifice of all soldiers, who laid down their lives
for the country, since 1947.
