Viktor Yanukovych, former Ukrainian President, is
rumoured to be Russia’s top choice to replace Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Pro-Russian Ukrainian leader had fled to Russia in
2014 after being deposed from his position.
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to reinstate
Yanukovych as president of Ukraine, as per The Kyiv
Independent.
The Ukrainian media outlet reported that Viktor
Yanukovych is allegedly in Minsk and the Kremlin is
preparing an operation to replace Zelensky with the ex-
president.

3. Abey Kuruvilla, former India pacer, appointed
as BCCI’s new General Manager
Abey Kuruvilla, the former pacer will be taking charge
as the new General Manager of the Board of Control
for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The news was reported by ANI mentioning the source,
“Yes, Abey Kuruvilla will be taking the reins as the new
General Manager of BCCI.”
Earlier in 2022, Abey Kuruvilla’s tenure as the national
selection committee member got over and now he will
be taking up the role of new General Manager of
BCCI.
The position of BCCI’s General Manager fell vacant
after Dhiraj Malhotra had stepped down.
Kuruvilla’s appointment was ratified during BCCI’s Apex
Council meeting on March 2, 2022.

4. PM Narendra Modi to participate in QUAD
leaders virtual meet today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in a Quad Leaders'
virtual meeting today along with US President Joe Biden,
Australian PM Scott Morrison, and Japanese PM Fumio Kishida.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the leaders will
exchange views and assessments about important developments
in the Indo-Pacific.
The Quad Leaders will also review ongoing efforts to implement
the Leaders’ initiatives announced as part of the Quad's
contemporary and positive agenda.
The QUAD leaders will have an opportunity to continue their
dialogue after the September 2021 Summit in Washington DC.
The meeting was not previously scheduled, as Japan is scheduled
to host the next in-person summit of the Quad in the first half of
2022.

5. Sanctions for India by US over purchase of
defense system from Russia?
Amid Russia and US conflict over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,
the United States has been looking whether to apply or waive
sanctions on India for its purchase of S-400 Triumf missile
defence system from Russia, under the Countering America’s
Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
The news was shared by US Diplomat Donald Lu on March 2,
2022.
The latest remarks from the United States came as India drew
criticism from the US lawmakers, both Democrats and
Republicans, at a hearing on the US relationship with India for
being among the 35 countries that abstained on March 2 from
a UN vote to rebuke Russia’s invasion.

6. UNGA resolution on Ukraine: UNGA adopts resolution
demanding Russia to withdraw from Ukraine, India abstains from
voting
The 193-member UN General Assembly adopted
resolution demanding that the Russian Federation
immediately cease its use of force against Ukraine and
withdraw its military forces in historic "Uniting for
Peace" session on March 2, 2022.
The resolution was passed with 141 countries voting in
favour including the United States, United Kingdom,
France and Germany, 5 against including Russia and
Belarus and 35 abstentions.
India abstained from voting against Russia at the UN,
its third abstention in less than a week.
