Gunatilleka appointed CFO of Jet Airways
Former CEO of SriLankan Airlines, Vipula Gunatilleka has been
appointed as the chief financial officer (CFO) of the grounded Jet
Airways. The decision was taken by the promoters of the airlines,
Jalan Kalrock consortium.
Vipula Gunatilleka was serving as the CEO of Sri Lankan airways till
last month. He has now been tasked with reviving the grounded
carrier.
Gunatilleka will join Jet Airways officially from March 1, 2022. He is
considered as a turnaround specialist and an aviation expert.
He had overseen the SriLankan airlines during the most difficult time
of the COVID-19 pandemic. He had been tasked with restruction the
airlines in 2018.
Jet Airways said in a statement that in less than two years of his
assuming the role of CEO of SriLankan airlines, the airline recorded a
positive EBITDA and cash flow for 2019-20, surviving the after effects
of the Sri Lankan terror attacks in April 2019 and the global pandemic
in early 2020.

3. NASA to retire International Space Station in
January 2031, to fall in the Pacific Ocean
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has announced that the
International Space Station (ISS) will cease its functioning by 2031.
The Director of ISS, Robyn Gatens said in a press release that the International
Space Station is entering its third and the most productive decade as a
groundbreaking scientific platform in microgravity.
At the end of the year 2030, the low-Earth orbit will see the last of the
International Space Station as the floating laboratory will cease the operations
and swoop down the Earth.

of 8 km per second.

4. Russian President recognizes two Ukraine
separatist regions as independent
Russian President Vladimir Putin announces the recognition of two
separatist republics in eastern Ukraine - Donetsk and Lugansk - as
independent through a televised address on February 21, 2022.
The Russian President also called Ukraine a US colony with 'a puppet
regime'.
The Russian President also ordered the sending of Russian Armed
Forces to the two breakaway regions of Ukraine after recognizing
their independence.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that Russia's decision to
recognize Ukraine regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent
is a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine
and inconsistent with the principles of the Charter of the United
Nations.

Praggnanandhaa, a 16-year old Indian Grandmaster, on
February 21, 2022, defeated the World Champion
Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the eighth round of the
Airthings Masters online rapid Chess tournament.
Both the chess players had a rough start in the event.

6. Queen Elizabeth II to become first British
monarch to rule for 70 years
Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to rule for
70 years on February 6, 2022. This marks the start of her
Platinum Jubilee year.
The Queen brought in her platinum jubilee in private, same as
all previous years, as the anniversary of her accession marks the
date her father George VI died.

7. Australia reopens borders to foreign tourists
after almost 2 years
Australia reopened its borders for fully vaccinated international
tourists from February 21, 2022 after almost two years, ending
one of the world's strictest and longest travel restrictions
imposed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on
February 7 after a meeting of the national security cabinet that
the borders will reopen to all visa holders on the 21st of
February of this year.
He said, "It's almost two years since we took the decision to
close the borders to Australia," adding, "if you're double
vaccinated, we look forward to welcoming you back to
Australia."

8. Biological E's Corbevax vaccine approved for
12-18 year olds
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has granted
emergency use authorisation to COVID-19 vaccine, CORBEVAX
for 12-18 year age group.
The vaccine is India's 1st indigenously developed Receptor
Binding Domain Protein sub-unit vaccine against COVID-19.
The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Drugs Controller
General of India's had earlier recommended granting restricted
emergency use approval to Biological E's COVID-19 vaccine,
Corbevax, for use among adolescents aged between 12 to 18
years subject to certain conditions.
