Mise en scene is a French term meaning ‘what is put
into a scene or frame’
In media it entails all visual information in front
of the camera
It gives the audience information using five key
elements.
3. 1-Settings and props
-Props are anything the actor’s hold/use
-sets can be built from scratch or already exist
-settings can manipulate the audience
4. 2-Costume, hair and makeup
-all these things indicate status/job
-also tells audience about the society/culture and
time of the movie
5. 3-Facial expressions and body
language
-shows the audience the characters feelings
-indicates relationships between characters
6. 4-Lighting and colour
-highlights main characters
-reflects the mental states of the characters (e.g.
Dark lighting=depressed, overbearing
lighting=intense)
-can change the atmosphere
7. 5-Positioning of characters
-draws attention to specific characters and objects
-indicates personality type of characters (e.g.
cluttered room=scatterbrain)
