Motor Neuron Disease
and the Ice Bucket Challenge

The Nervous System
In the body the nervous
system is made up of
The brain
The spinal cord
The nerves that
control muscles in
our face, arms,
legs and the
organs inside you
Motor Neurone Disease
• Motor Neurone disease affects a special group
of nerve cells called anterior horn cells that sit
in the spinal cord and control movement
Motor Neurone Disease
• That is why it is also called “Anterior Horn cell
Disease”
• Another name for it is “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”
• He was a famous baseballer in the United States
who developed weakness in his hands first
• When they looked at his batting average after he
died they realised exactly when he started to
show signs of the disease because his batting
average went down suddenly
ALS
MOTOR NEURON DISORDERS
Flail PLS
There are three types of motor neurone disease
Motor Neurone Disease
• Motor Neurone Disease can cause weakness
in arms, legs, speech, swallowing and
breathing
• People with motor neurone disease are very
brave
• We don’t know what causes Motor Neurone
Disease
• PEOPLE WITH MOTOR NEURON DISEASE
– NEED LOTS OF HELP TO ENJOY THEIR LIFE
– THEY ARE LOOKED AFTER BY
• NEUROLOGISTS
• NURSES
• COMMUNITY WORKERS
