Motor Neuron Disease (MND) affects nerve cells in the spinal cord that control muscle movement. It causes weakness in the limbs, speech, swallowing and breathing. MND includes Lou Gehrig's Disease and there are three types. The Ice Bucket Challenge raised money and awareness for MND research by challenging people to dump a bucket of ice water on their heads. People with MND need help from medical professionals and community workers to live with the disease as its causes are still unknown and more research is needed to find treatments.

of nerve cells called anterior horn cells that sit
in the spinal cord and control movement

• He was a famous baseballer in the United States
who developed weakness in his hands first
• When they looked at his batting average after he
died they realised exactly when he started to
show signs of the disease because his batting
average went down suddenly
