Motor neuron disease is a serious neurological disorder that causes the motor neurons controlling muscles of movement, speech, swallowing and breathing to deteriorate over time. The main types are ALS, progressive bulbar palsy and progressive muscular atrophy. There is no cure and treatment focuses on managing symptoms to maintain quality of life. The drug riluzole can extend life by a few months but does not relieve symptoms. As motor neurons die, patients gradually lose physical function until they become paralyzed. Outcomes depend on the type and age of onset, with some forms being less deadly and progressing slowly.
