What  kind  of  media  institution  might  distribute  your  media  product  and   why?       What  corporations/conglomerates  would  you  like  to  distribute  your   products?     Conglomerate  Bauer  Media  group.  Already  publish  lots  of  magazines  (portfolio  of   over  600)  so  are  experienced  in  magazine  publishing  and  distribution.  HQ  is  in   Hamburg  Germany  but  they  publish  magazines  and  have  other  offices  all  over   the  world  including  UK  (a  big  audience  for  them)  and  USA,  therefore  using  Bauer   means  my  magazine  could  have  international  appeal.     Why  would  a  corporation/conglomerate  be  the  best  choice  for  your   magazine?     A  conglomerate  has  lots  of  contacts  and  a  wide  range  of  ways  to  publish  the   magazine.  Owns  lots  of  corporations  so  can  spread  workload  round  and  can  have   corporations  that  specify  in  certain  areas  take  on  certain  projects  they  are  best   at.  Own  brands  such  as  Kerrang!.  Bauer  radio,  has  many  radio  channels  such  as   Cool  FM,  Downtown  Radio,  Bauer  City  1,  2  and  3.  Bauer  national  radio  has  a   portfolio  of  7  radio  brands:  Absolute  Radio  (80s,  90s),  Kiss  (Kiss  100,  Kisstory),   Magic  (Magic  105.4,  to  launch  this  year  in  March:  mellow  magic,  magic  chilled),   planet  Rock,  Heat  Radio,  The  Hits,  Kerrang  Radio.  50%  stake  in  box  television,  so   partially  owns  channels  such  as:  4Music,  The  Box,  Heat,  Kerrang,  Kiss,  Magic  and   Smash  Hits.     What  other  similar  magazines  do  they  already  distribute?  Why  might  this   be  an  advantage?  (Make  comparisons)     They  own  Q,  MOJO  and  Kerrang!  All  are  music  magazines  so  this  shows  they  are   successful  at  producing  popular  music  magazines.  Q  is  a  general  music  magazine   that  mainly  focuses  on  top  charts  and  pop  music.  Kerrang!  is  a  rock  music   magazine,  so  in  that  respect  it’s  similar  to  my  magazine,  but  whilst  Kerrang!  is   for  the  whole  of  the  rock  genre  (though  often  features  many  alternative  rock   artists)  my  magazine  is  specifically  for  the  sub-­‐genre  of  alternative  rock  so  fans   of  Kerrang!  will  likely  enjoy  my  magazine.  Also  Kerrang!  and  Q  both  tend  to  focus   on  big  artists  or  artists  that  are  starting  to  climb  the  charts,  whilst  my  magazine   would  feature  up  and  coming  artists  who  are  seen  to  have  lots  of  potential  to   break  it  big  so  could  also  appeal  to  some  of  the  indie  market.  Bauer  doesn’t  have   a  music  magazine  that  seems  to  focus  on  this  so  whilst  also  bringing  something   to  the  table  that  it  already  has  and  already  has  experience  in,  my  magazine  also   could  help  bring  in  a  new  audience.     Where  could  they  distribute  your  magazine?     In  mainstream  retailers/supermarkets  such  as  TESCO,  ASDA,  Sainsbury’s  etc.   Music  stores,  corner  shops,  music  festivals  (reading,  V  Festival),  online  as  a  
  • 2. digital  version  of  the  magazine  (official  website,  maybe  link  to  it  on  Bauer’s   website,  Kerrang’s  website  etc?)     What  kind  of  marketing  campaign  could  the  corporation/conglomerate  do   for  the  release  of  your  magazine?     Advertise  it  in  other  music  magazines  such  as  Kerrang!  as  people  who  like   Kerrang!  will  likely  enjoy  my  magazine  due  to  being  very  similar  in  genre.   Advertise  it  at  a  music  festival  by  giving  out  free  issues  for  first  issue.  Sponsor  a   festival  with  the  magazine.  Advertisements  on  bus  stops.  Internet  adverts:  video,   banners,  website  to  promote  etc.  Mention  in  other  magazine’s  mailing  lists.   Product  placement.  Radio  ads,  (Kerrang!  Radio)     What  other  products  (synergy)  could  the  institution  create  for  your   magazine?     YouTube  channel:  Extra  interview  content  with  featured  artists,  backstage  tour   videos,  vlogs  created  by  bands,  contests,  fan  made  music  videos  to  promoted   album/songs.  Kerrang!  Radio  Youtube  has  interviews  that  were  on  radio  but  live   on  film,  interviews  at  awards  ceremonies  etc  and  so  we’d  do  similar  and  have   filmed  radio  segments  on  their  as  well  as  awards  footage.  Fun  behind  the  scenes   footage.       Radio  Station:  Play  albums  of  artists  featured  in  that  month’s  magazine,   announce  contest  winners  and  hold  exclusive  radio  contests,  advertise  magazine   and  other  magazines  owned  by  Bauer  (eg  Kerrang!),  exclusive  interviews.     Gigs  and  Festival:  Hold  gigs  and  festivals  in  areas  around  the  country  with  some   bands  mentioned  in  magazine  as  well  as  local  talent  to  promote  them  as   alternative  rock  artists.  Could  also  sell  magazines  or  give  them  for  free  to  people   who  attend.  Bands  could  be  alternative  rock  groups  like  Mother  Mother,  Panic!   At  the  Disco,  Green  Day  and  ColdPlay.     Social  media:  Facebook,  twitter  and  tumblr  pages  to  keep  in  close  contact  with   fans.  Can  find  out  what  fans  want,  answer  their  questions,  have  celebrities   answer  Q&As  on  account  for  certain  period  of  time,  exclusive  contests.     Official  website:  exclusive  articles  and  magazine  blog,  ability  to  subscribe  to   magazine  and  digital  version  of  magazine.     App:  Can  listen  to  radio  station,  access  official  website  stuff  and  read  digital   magazine,  subscribe  to  magazine,  notifications  come  up  when  new  mag  is   released  or  new  blog  post  or  interview  is  coming  up.  Can  tell  you  about  nearby   gigs  and  band  tours.  Contests.
